Wild Life gallery

Anew art gallery in Wimberley, WILD LIFE, showcases the work of prize-winning adventure photographer Rodney Bursiel. The grand opening on March 24 gave visitors a close-up view of magnificent large animals in Africa, sadly some that have been hunted to near extinction, and the great white shark, an apex predator that Rodney says is one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet, beautiful wild horses running in the ocean, and portraits of living legends like Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett. There was also an opportunity to support efforts to save the white rhinoceros from extinction, with James Mwenda, from Kenya, giving an inspirational talk about this important conservation cause.

The art gallery has four rooms each with a different theme: Equine, Africa, Music and Water. “I focus on the subjects that I enjoy the most,” Rodney says. His began his career by taking photographs of musicians he admires because of his lifelong love for music, and it was a musician named Donavon Frankenreiter who rekindled his interest in underwater photography, which in turn led to a spectacular underwater shot of a surfer in Fiji that won third prize in a National Geographic Travel Photograph of the Year (2017) competition.

Rodney’s dad, who owned a scuba shop and gave lessons for 30 years, was an underwater photography hobbyist. “My dad taught me diving and photography,” Rodney says, “but after he sold the shop, I didn’t do any underwater photography for many years.” He later met Donavon, a musician and surfer from California, when he played at

Austin City Limits. Donavon was doing surf camps with Billabong and Rodney wanted to go along and take some photographs. “I’d never been surfing and I hadn’t been diving in 20 years, but I was ready to go even though I had to pay my own way, it took 48 hours to get there and at 6 am they’re all surfing, so I jumped in the water and started taking photos.” He gave these to Donavon who gave them to his sponsors who bought them. “We became good friends and I still travel with him sometimes,” Rodney says.

“I wanted a more adventurous life, more action” is how he explains the wanderlust that drives him to swim with sharks, killer whales and crocodiles, and to travel to Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia to photograph elephants and lions. Getting those amazing shots sometimes takes a lot of patience, as Rodney recalls watching two lions sleep for three hours before the female stood up and dawn broke amid dramatic cloud formations (“Majestic” photograph)

“When I first went to Africa, I didn’t see a single rhino the whole time we were there. We drove the entire Serengeti, a planned two-week trip turned into five weeks, then 10 days in Kenya, and Ethiopia but still no rhinos.” It was around this time that he got a clearer picture of how terribly threatened these animals are and how protective the rangers have to be to guard the rhino’s location because of the staggering rates of illegal hunting for its horn.

Meeting James Mwenda of Kenya Ol Pejeta Conservancy had a profound effect on Rodney and inspired him to do what he could with his photographs to call attention to this tragedy, as he’d already done as an advocate for protecting the great sharks and other endangered animals. “I’ve been encouraged by reactions from people who tell me how much the photographs and the stories have affected them,” Rodney says. He sees that his work can make a difference. “A big part of this gallery is rhino conservation,” he says.

James told those at the WILD LIFE gallery opening about growing up in a small village and how from a young age he’d wanted to protect the animals. He could never have imagined when he was 10 years old that he would someday, in Sudan, be one of the men who would take care of the last male Northern White Rhinoceros. He says although it’s true that man is responsible for driving this extinction, he is also working to revive the species. “We still have a lot of beauty on our planet, no matter what is going on in the world,” James says, “whenever you can do something that is a greater cause than your everyday regular activities, that is a blessing.”

At WILD LIFE, we see the beauty on our planet in the photographs of these amazing creatures that are such an important part of our world. The message from WILD LIFE is this: we all have a part to play as custodians of this planet. It boils down to asking “what can I do?” and then doing something.

FYI • WILD LIFE is located at 13620 Ranch Road 12. Hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm and Monday through Wednesday by appointment. WILD LIFE donates 50 percent of profits from sales of “Wimberley the Rhino” merchandise to conservation efforts at Ol Pejeta Conservancy. The shop features many items acquired on Rodney’s travels to complement the themes of the galleries. For example in the Africa room there are baskets from Rwanda and beaded necklaces from Kenya; and miniature guitar replicas and books about musicians Rodney photographed (including Willie Nelson) in the Music Room. Texas Rock Art

After retiring from their careers as a master mechanic and school principal, Daniel and Vicki Jacobs turned their talents toward rock painting, a totally new and artistic endeavor. This new hobby soon turned into a business. Thirteen years later, they’re still selling colorful porch and garden art, usually featuring a Texas, religious, or nature theme, from their open-air shop on Wimberley Square.

Daniel and Vicki are both from the Rio Grande Valley. “We grew up together,” Vicki says, “our families knew each other, we all attended a tiny Baptist church in Sebastian,” a rural community very close in proximity to the largest ranch in the United States, King Ranch.

Vicki moved to Wimberley in 2003 when she took a job as school principal in San Marcos. Two years later, she reconnected with Daniel when he and his mom drove her dad to Wimberley for a visit “because Dad wanted to see where I was living,” and a year later she and Daniel were married in a backyard wedding.

Vicki credits her mother, Ruth Long, for any artistic talents she has. “What little I do comes straight from her,” she says, “she was a true artist who painted landscapes, seascapes, animals and portraits in oils in her home studio… there was always art in our home.”

Despite their mother’s example and efforts to inspire her children to create their own art, they weren’t responsive at that time to her encouragement. “None of us took an interest,” Vicki says, “but now we all have Mom’s art in our houses and we cherish her artwork.”

After Vicki retired, she had no hobbies. “I was always a mother and a schoolteacher and a principal, there wasn’t much time for hobbies,” she says. Vicky and Daniel live out in the country and they enjoy going

for walks on their property. As everyone who lives in this area knows and visitors soon discover, the Wimberley terrain is a rocky one, and it was during one of these walks that Vicki found a particularly nice looking rock and decided to paint their street number on it along with a big colorful star. This was the beginning of their rock art.

Friends saw the rock with the street number and star and liked it. This sparked the idea to do more. “Although art was new to Daniel, he does a great job,” Vicky says. “He’s a gifted master mechanic and spent years restoring classic cars,” she says, recalling one time when he brought home a box full of parts and worked out on the back porch building a motorcycle from all of the parts.

Even though they initially used a rock from their own property, most of those rocks are too dark in color, too rough and bumpy for the paintings, which require a smooth surface. So they get materials from landscaping companies that have pallets of flagstone. Vicki especially enjoys painting Texas wildflowers, like poppies and bluebonnets, and incorporating Christian themes in some of the paintings, but says that what means the most to her about making the art is the great connection she feels to her mother. “This shop has been such a blessing,” she says.

They started going to Market Days in Kyle and Blanco “to test the waters where no one knew us,” Vicky says. As her confidence grew, she approached a lady who had a small shop on the Wimberley Square and asked about putting some of the rock art in her shop.

Les Crane, who owned several of the buildings let them rent the patio next to In Style Accessories. “That was 2010 and we’ve been in the same location all this time.”

“We can do business even when we aren’t right there at the shop,”

she says, “our rock art is there and our sign with phone number and name. People call me all the time. They like that we’re a small mom and pop local business, they like that Daniel and I are there and that we’re the ones who make the art. People love that.”

You’ll find Daniel and Vicki on the Square most weekends, depending on the weather, although there are occasional getaways that recall earlier times and avocations. Daniel sold his last classic car, a 1957 Chevy several years ago and bought a new 2019 Corvette. Last October, they drove to Mississippi to “Cruisin’ the Coast,” a festival that began in 1996 to celebrate antique, classic and hot rod vehicles, where they met other car buffs. “Daniel still enjoys the drives, still loves the car tours,” Vicki says. Hildee’s Texas dine-inn

Ryan Hildebrand grew up in Houston and experienced big city success there as an acclaimed chef at Triniti and FM Kitchen & Bar, a restaurant he co-founded. Many expressed surprise when he decided to take his talents elsewhere and build a new restaurant from the ground up in Wimberley. Ryan and his family had actually been looking for about seven years before buying property on Winters Mill Parkway. Ryan says, “my wife’s grandfather’s house is on the Blanco River so we were familiar with this area and had been visiting regularly for about 15 years.”

With hindsight now, knowing that Ryan’s early 2020 plans for construction were about to crash right into the fear and uncertainty associated with the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s heartening to know he and his family navigated successfully through that strange difficult time of working remotely with architects and engineers while homeschooling their two daughters during lockdown. Hildee’s Texas Dine-Inn opened its doors to the public in March 2022.

“We wanted Hildee’s to be part of the landscape,” Ryan says, “and to be representative of the region.” The restaurant accomplishes this goal beautifully, with an exterior that balances the warmth of wood

with steel, stone masonry and a tin roof. The outside and breezeway is large and airy. “We especially like that the property backs up to the Blue Hole Trail and is only a mile or so from the town square.”

Ryan’s close attention to the architecture and interior design of Hildee’s is reminiscent of his early interest in drawing and illustrating. “I always loved art,” he says. He attended Baylor University, earning a degree in graphic design just as the field shifted toward computer aided design, which didn’t appeal to him at all, so he decided to go in another direction.

That’s when the idea for a culinary career began to take shape,. “Cooking can also be artistic and creative,” he says. Although Ryan says he didn’t cook when he was younger, his mother, aunt and grandma are all good cooks and were his early culinary inspirations.

Ryan first cooked for a paycheck in 1996. “My first job as a prep cook was at San Luis in Galveston,” he says. This upscale restaurant is famous for its impeccable service, award-winning cuisine, and an elegant setting featuring mahogany woodwork and leather furnishings, in other words, an introduction to the behind-thescenes demands of the more formal world of fine dining. He later attended the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, NY for two years where he honed his skills and had the opportunity to work with great chefs.

In Houston, Ryan was a chef at two renowned restaurants. First at Triniti, from 2011-2017, which was very high end, with seasonal and tasting menus; even their famously terrific burgers were creatively prepared, nothing ordinary.

Both the restaurant and Chef Ryan were praised by fans as bright stars in the culinary cosmos. The second restaurant, FM Kitchen and Bar, which he co-owned, was a casual patio style concept. It was almost the antithesis of Triniti featuring simple fare: burgers and chicken sandwiches, fries and tater tots. Hildee’s combines elements from Triniti and FM Kitchen and Bar, with an extra helping of inspiration from the Texas Hill Country.

“My background is in fine dining, with its artfulness and attention to detail and presentation,” he says, “but I want to combine that level of execution with more casual southern barbecue elements, a core menu of signature items with seasonal changes, like strawberries in summer.”

The menus at Hildee’s reflect the creativity of the chefs. Casual southern dishes (cornbread, collard greens, meatloaf and catfish) are enhanced with unexpected and delicious additions like candied jalapeno in the cornbread and mushroom duxelles in the meatloaf. The Texas Sheet Cake has a layer of chocolate mousse and is topped with candied pecans.

“That’s the process for creating a new dish,” Ryan says, “subtle changes in technique or ingredients, where you can tell there’s something different, but you don’t know exactly what it is and once you manipulate it, it becomes yours.”

Whenever possible, the chefs at Hildee’s use locally grown ingredients from Farm to Table, a company in Austin. “They source all through Central Texas so it’s one stop shopping, we check the website and see what’s available,” Ryan explains. Farm to Table works with more than 100 mostly family-owned farms and ranches that produce organically grown fruits and vegetables, meat, milk and cheese products.

Chad Stanley had his eye on a certain shoe store on the Wimberley Square for quite a while before he and Wisconsinbased partner, Rob Garrett, at long last achieved this dream and bought In Style Accessories a year and a half ago.

Chad met previous owners, Larry and Kristi Broadway, in 1993 when he was a sales representative for footwear living in Grapevine Texas, and they became good friends. In a time when there aren’t many independent shoe stores, In Style Accessories stood out as destination shopping for visitors from all across Texas who wanted high quality shoes you likely wouldn’t find in big box, chain or department stores. “Larry and I would run into each other at trade shows,” Chad recalls, “and we joked about it for 15 years, I’d tell him I wanted the store someday.”

In time, Larry was ready to sell the store and Chad still wanted it. He especially liked the idea of bringing his friend Rob, who also works in the footwear business, along with him as a partner. One bonding similarity that Chad and Rob shared was a profound lack of interest in the world of apparel, except for shoes. “My

dad was an apparel rep,” Chad said, “so I grew up around that, but I was always drawn to footwear instead, and so was Rob.”

The history of shoes is a fascinating one that can lead down many different rabbit trails, but it is generally understood that shoes tell the stories of people and their times. Everyone has at least one or two shoe stories, if not at the level of lost glass slippers or magical red shoes, there are memories of the indispensable fringed suede boots you once wore everywhere or “lucky” sneakers, as well as opinions about the best shoes for comfort and style. Those who work in the footwear business likely have more.

Chad and Rob have differing perspectives and ideas, about what kinds of shoes to add to In Style’s inventory for example, but theirs are complementary rather than divisive perspectives, often yielding good results. Recalling that Larry developed for target customers successfully and stayed true to that, Chad’s approach has been building on success from other designer aesthetics and always asking, “What is it that excites customers?” He describes himself as “closer to home but at the same time looking to see if there is a desire to modify a design.” For example, the action sports footwear adapted into collegiate styles that utilize university colors, making them desirable to sororities and fraternities and anyone really who wants to show school spirit.

Rob is a buyer who seeks out brands from younger designers and he has an ability to recognize color and texture that will appeal to customers. “Rob is a really good and super creative visionary who can see trends evolving forward,” Chad says, “Chicago is a more contemporary landscape and I was scared to death that Rob would go too far and bring something in that wouldn’t work, but so far he

has brought in some of our best sellers.” One popular brand now available at In Style is Birkenstock®, an icon in the shoe industry. “This always seemed like a brand that would go over very well here, but it wasn’t available until we bought the business,” Chad says.

Shoes that feel comfortable right away, provide arch support and are wide enough and long enough at the toes are some of the characteristics of a “comfort shoe.” In Style offers a wide selection of shoes, like Pikolinos® from Spain and Remonte® casual zip sneakers, On Running® Swiss-engineered performance shoes, that combine comfort with style.

Rob mentions the new accessory lines that the store now carries. He says, “Bellroy is an Australia based brand, we also carry high quality handmade leather shoes and accessories from Bedstu®. Our eye wear selection has also been updated with sunglasses that are fashionably functional and a high quality value for customers.”

The store carries around 100 different brands of shoes and accessories. The staff are extremely knowledgeable about the merchandise, as well as good ambassadors for the products they offer. Wimberley inn + bar

The Wimberley Inn may have started with modest roots, but it’s quickly becoming one of Wimberley’s premier properties. Developed in the 1950s as a vacation resort, “Sleepy Hollow,” the inn was a small stop on the trail offering a handful of cabins, a restaurant, a small pool, and activities like horseback riding and volleyball. Over the years, improvements have been made as new owners have added to the property and increased its offerings. The inn changed ownership and underwent a dramatic transformation in 2021, reopening as the Wimberley Inn + Bar.

Today’s guests can still get a glimpse of former times. The inn remains the peaceful oasis it once was, surrounded by nature. It’s also a beautiful spot to host weddings, reunions, and perfect for travelers looking for a Zen-like place to call home away from home.

“The Wimberley Inn and Bar’s location is prime, as guests love the proximity to the Square and Blue Hole,” explains Amanda Calaway, Director of Operations. “However, we have quite a few business travelers that enjoy the peaceful energy of the outdoor space and the convenience of the on-site bar and kitchen with craft cocktails and Hill Country-style cuisine.” The inn and bar also offer in-room and poolside dining.

Rooms at the Wimberley Inn + Bar can be best described as modern and simplistic, appealing to couples, families, business executives, and groups of friends. Travelers are greeted with a fun décor and private exterior entry, a walk-in shower with a cool vibe, comfortable linens, a seating area outside the room, and amenities like a mini-fridge and coffee maker. Pets are also welcome.

Guests can often be found relaxing under the live oaks at the pool or on the deck enjoying a cocktail and locally sourced bite, gathered by the fire pit, or enjoying the live music and pop-up art shows the inn often hosts. Locals and non-guests are also welcome to enjoy the bar and lounge and day-use pool passes. A Saturday brunch with music by Guitarrista Këlly is a favorite among locals and tourists.

The Wimberley Inn + Bar can create a custom package to accommodate small groups for business meetings, cocktail socials, private dinners, and weddings and reunions with up to 100 people.

If you didn’t pack the essentials needed to enjoy the river, you can pop into Blanco River Outfitters at 7A, and they’ll hook you up.

While the vibe at the Wimberley Inn + Bar is modern and fun, it remains approachable for older couples and families with children, with all rooms located on the ground level.

Children and those young at heart will enjoy taking a stroll down Arroyo Trail, which winds along the dry creek, catching a glimpse of the wildlife often seen on the property, and of course, splashing in the pool. MISSION DAY SPA

Jesseca Zollars Smith, owner of Mission Day Spa, has found her calling. That’s why she is back once more in the field after retiring three times. As a licensed esthetics educator with 30 years experience and a heart for helping others, Jesseca specializes in oncology and sensitive skin, giving her clients customized facials and spa treatments that leave them feeling and looking refreshed and beautiful. Also, after losing her mom to cancer, she was inspired to further her education with more than 50 hours of oncology training, qualifying her to provide care for skin sensitivities that are often brought on by chemical drug treatments.

The health and well-being of your skin is only one part of the mission that Jesseca and her team provide at this luxurious day spa. “This is above all a call to create community, a place to teach and mentor budding estheticians, and an art mecca.”

Every room in the spa is beautifully decorated with antiques and art, providing an ambience that’s equal parts cozy and elegant. The renovation to the space was quite extensive with new floors, built-in shelving, paint and additional esthetically pleasing touches, large and small, including new upholstery, and hand texturing the walls and painting them flat white to better showcase the art. After moving into the building in March 2022, renovations continued at a steady pace until the following September, culminating with the spa’s grand opening last October.

Jesseca’s background in the skin care industry has taken her from the cosmetics counter at JC Penney when she was just 17 years old and still a high school student in Olympia, Washington to working with a cosmetic chemist to co-create products for a natural beauty product/skin care line that sold in more than 3,000 stores, including Anthropologie, Nordstrom and Whole Foods. “My goal at that time was to open a day spa and boutique,” Jesseca says, “which I did, first in the early 2000s with Avocado Tree in Dallas, later in Seattle with Fresh Face Seattle. She had a great client base in Seattle, and met her husband there in 2006, which eventually brought her back to Texas and to Wimberley in 2014.

The couple was in town for the 500-year flood that washed away their rental cabin. “I’ll never forget how this town rose up together and helped each other and helped my husband and me after that

Memorial Day weekend,” Jesseca says. “That weekend impacted me in such a profound way, it changed me.”

It has been quite the roller coaster ride, but Jesseca is happy to bring her years of experience and love for the business to spa clients and as a continuing education provider for the Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation (TDLR) for licensed professionals and high school seniors interning for careers in cosmetology.

“I take new apprentices under my wing from the high school level and introduce them to this world of esthetics and spa, and then teach continuing education courses once they’re fully licensed,” she says.

Jesseca has a great team of estheticians and massage therapists. A former student, from when Jesseca was a student educator at Total Transformations Institute of Cosmetology (TTIOC) in San Marcos, is “proficient in advanced esthetics, sensitive skin facials, and especially skilled at eyelash extensions.” Also working at the spa are a dual licensed Esthetician/Massage Therapist and a Massage Therapist, both licensed more than 15 years and skilled in advanced modalities.

“We have a third generation energy worker, who is a practicing shaman, working on reinstating his massage license.” Jesseca says, “Together, we work as a succinct team bringing love and passion for this industry to the individuals and spa parties we serve.”

The Art Events at Mission Day Spa coincide with second Saturday Art Walks hosted by the Wimberley Valley Art League. Jesseca and her husband, who are both artists, are members of the league and the spa is one of nine Art League galleries. “I thought it would be awesome to host artists at the spa,” Jesseca says, “so I asked if we could be a gallery on the ‘Art Trail’ and now we are!”

The spa hosts artists’ works for four-month periods, and when the art rotation comes up, hosts a party. Jesseca says, “I call it the VIP Art Party, launch a huge social media presence —invitation only—arrange for a band, invite local vendors and host a fun twohour event.” This is a great way to support artists and the community in keeping with the mission of Mission Day Spa.

Church Leaders

Rev. Jim Denham CHAPEL IN THE HILLS

Chapel in the Hills is a Christian, Interdenominational Church that has been serving the Lord here in Wimberley since 1949. If you are curious about our worship style, music, and the way we worship, please go on-line to our Facebook page and watch one of our services. This will tell you much about our Church and Sunday worship, but when you visit, you will discover our personal friendship and fellowship for yourself.

Reverend Jim Denham has served as Pastor for this Chapel twice: from 1999 to 2008, then returning in 2014 to again serve as Pastor. He has also served as a Hospice Chaplain, Hospital Chaplain, and pastor in several other congregations here in Texas.

Our church’s tag line for decades has been “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met.” Come for a visit on Sundays at 9 am with Guitar music, or at 11 am with a Choir and English handbells. Hope to see you on Sunday.

Rev. Kevin LJ Schubert ST. STEPHEN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at St. Stephen’s! We have many wonderful offerings of fellowship, worship, lifelong learning, and outreach that are integral to the community. “We are truly a welcoming community that is committed to being in relationship with God and one another. It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you,”

On Sundays we offer two worship services: one at 8 AM in the Chapel and another at 10:30 am in the Sanctuary. The Nursery, for ages infant through 4 years, is available on Sundays during Sunday worship and during Sunday morning adult bible classes.

Teens meet on Mondays from 6 pm to 8 pm in McArthur Hall. Adults have several opportunities for lifelong learning on Sundays, as well as Bible study, and social and service activities throughout the week. We also offer a mid-week Holy Eucharist service on Wednesdays at 10:30 am in the Chapel, which includes healing prayers for those in need.

For all the details on worship, classes, and fellowship gatherings, visit the church website: ststeve.org
