SAORI

he threads of creativity run joyously throughout and about Wimberley. Just consider its many practicing artisans, craftsmen and women and others who’ve embraced this nurturing community where dreams can come to fruition via multiple media. And, while rendered examples abound throughout the town and countryside representing myriad art forms, perhaps the most unique can be experienced at Wimberley Valley SAORI – a functioning studio, gallery, retail shop and classroom dedicated solely to advancing a Japanese weaving discipline based on unfettered freedom and imagination. Before a further introduction to Wimberley Valley SAORI, a better understanding of just what SAORI is, is in order. It was developed in Japan around 1970 by the always curious Misao Jo who, at age 57, decided she would like to learn how to weave. SAORI is actually a contraction of her name meaning “Misao’s Weaving” but, SAORI also translates as “SAI: everything having individuality and dignity” and “Ori: weaving.” And, the latter certainly applies in regards to the output of Misao Jo’s breakaway art because, each finished creation truly was one-ofa kind. But, that’s just what the pioneering artist had in mind – complete freedom of expression through textiles. Subsequently, throughout her country, and later the world, the popularity of her craft took root and has found a very large following. SAORI works were, and still are produced on exquisite looms initially developed by two of Misao’s sons but, beyond the equipment employed, the diverse materials and techniques used today are as varied as the practitioners and their creations. Whatever, to truly understand, one must first experience samples of completed work which might include amazing wearables, wall hangings, table throws and a thousand other fabric uses. What the works do share is, they are all esthetically surprising and stunning and, that’s what makes it all so neat. And, because of this alluring “no rules” method of creation and overt individualism, arty folks have been drawn to Saori since its inception. Wimberley’s talented Kathy Utts was one. a long background artistically working with fabrics (sewing, knitting, weaving, etc.), discovered the Japanese style and quickly became enamored too. So much so, that, after training in Atlanta, Georgia, Worchester, Massachusetts and even Osaka, Japan, she not only became adept at the Eastern art form (currently, her work has been featured in several galleries and high-end retail shops in the Southwest) but was also approved to open her own teaching studio in 2017. Hence, the birth of her Wimberley Valley SAORI, located on beautiful acreage a few minutes from the town’s square. And, it’s become a popular oasis of creativity attracting locals and out-oftowers alike all seeking new and challenging outlets for visual expression. As proof, enrollment at the center for the various classes offered provide ample testimony as new participants continually join the excitement. A visit to the center is a joy unto itself with inspirational views of the surrounding countryside. But, it’s within the studio where creativity finds fulfillment. In the spacious, naturallyilluminated interior, six authentic SAORI looms await both first time weavers and/or experienced fiber artists alike. Kathy, always on hand, not only functions as the studio’s teacher and encourager but also as its “guide” making gentle suggestions to help students “think outside of the box” as each approaches their individual projects. The entire atmosphere is conducive to energizing and stimulating the creative act and, that’s quite a thrill. To further inspiration, part of the weaving studio also houses a well-stocked “retail area” replete with imported and domestic fabrics, natural yarns, decorative materials and other supplies useful for the SAORI process along with an adjacent gallery displaying works by Kathy and others. E
very community should have some dedicated place where memories are honored, values shared, pleasure generated and all are welcomed, individually and, as a member of something larger. For Wimberley, such exists quite stirringly upon the beautiful grounds of the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens. Not only does the acreage function as a reflection of what so many within the community hold to be dear but more importantly, it further acts a touchstone where one (or many) can go to reconnect with nature, themselves and others. Wimberley’s everevolving EmilyAnn, a continual endearing communal work-inprogress, remains so much, to so many and quite frankly, that’s it’s role. Founded in 1998, the theatre and gardens were named for the late Emily Rolling, an aspiring actress, costume designer and much-loved resident of Wimberley. It was her parents’ wish, after losing their youngest daughter in a tragic auto accident, that they find a way to celebrate Emily’s life which had included regular participation in the Wimberley High School’s popular “Shakespeare Under the Stars” performance program. To that end, the high school graciously provided six unspoiled acres with the intent that a privately-funded theater would be built for the program’s future use. After the theater’s completion, the surrounding grounds (which would later double in size to 12 acres) were christened The EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens resulting in a proud and exciting moment, not only for the Rolling family and the school but, for the entire community as well. Like many good things, however, after the theater’s initial construction it didn’t stop there.

As a visit today will attest, not only is the original outdoor amphitheatre still in place and regularly used for the Shakespeare program, concerts and additional productions but, other incredible (and easily accessible) venues, activities, constructions and native and landscaped sites have been added and/or enhanced that further contribute to the tract’s varied utilization. Truly, it’s become like the town’s unofficial park and gathering center where young and old can relax, reflect, recreate, meet, learn and just, enjoy amid myriad, year ‘round man-made and natural wonderment. And yes, informational help will be immediately available at the plaza office. For starters, a short walk to the west is the theater complex where the impressive, 400-seat amphitheatre looms. It is here where large theatrical productions are undertaken. But almost adjoining is a smaller, indoor studio theater which can accommodate up to 75 people for musical performances, group meetings, instructional classes and other events. And attached is the newly constructed “Great Hall” which further expands the useable interior space. A smaller, outdoor “Art” stage is also on hand for more intimate entertainment. intriguing, locally-produced works of art), guests can experience myriad visuallypleasing sites. Picnic areas abound brightened by a variety of expertly (and voluntarily) tended gardens – some native, some herbal, some sensory. Signage has been installed throughout to facilitate the educational aspects of each garden. For many, the acres of flora alone are the primary reason for a visit. Others however require a more physical connection and, to that end, the EmilyAnn does not disappoint. Frisbee golf, a giant chess board, roping corral and even a washer toss court beckon the competitive. And for the kiddos, there’s the large creative play area full of enjoyable wonderment that even has a maze too. Can you find your way out? Add to all this the accommodating concessions stands, benches, restrooms, an EmilyAnn store and, even a library and you begin to get the idea that this truly is one cool, all-in-one recreational place. But, the EmilyAnn also has a more serious side and, that’s not to be missed as well. On the complex’s northern, more elevated end is the Memorial Hilltop. Not only are stunning, panoramic views offered but, it is here where the memorials are found. As the complex honors EmilyAnn, more targeted sites honor area veterans, 2015 flood victims and even local children who were taken too soon. These beautiful and reflective areas give pause while generating appreciation among those who come to pay tribute and remember. It’s all quite moving. Lastly, on a seasonal basis, the EmilyAnn hosts a number of very special events including a fun-filled, child-friendly butterfly festival each April and December’s famous “Trail of Lights” where more than 70 illuminated exhibits thrill attendees as they stroll the grounds. CHILL’S on the Creek By BONNIE EISSLER
C
hill’s on the Creek (formerly Ino’z) has the best waterfront dining in Wimberley, with picnic tables extending all the way down from the restaurant to the water for a beautiful view of Cypress Creek. This is a family-friendly venue where kids can run around and play by the creek, there’s an unhurried hometown vibe with twinkling lights adding to the festive atmosphere. Chase and Courtney Philmon were valued members of the Ino’z team for more than ten years and as the new owners, they’re putting their personal stamp on this iconic gathering place, with a new name, a revamped menu, a custom-made bar, expanded outdoor seating and renovated interior. “Courtney and I met for the first time when we were working together at Ino’z,” Chase says. The couple, who have a young son and daughter now and recently celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary, were managers at different times. Chase was working as General Manager when he and Courtney became equity partners in the business two years ago. A ribbon cutting ceremony in July officially inaugurated the newly named restaurant and the new owners. Courtney lived most of her life in Wimberley, graduating from Wimberley High School, while Chase took a more circuitous route to get there. He lived in cities in southeast Texas – Beaumont, Galveston, Friendswood, and in Durango, Colorado – before moving to Wimberley in 2008 after Hurricane Ike rolled through the coastal regions of Texas. Courtney and Chase Philemon. “I lived with my grandparents whose house was right across the creek from Ino’z,” Chase says. He’d worked as a waiter at Chili’s in Friendswood and his original plan was to work at the Chili’s in San Marcos, but he applied for a job at Ino’z instead. “It was a lot closer than driving to San Marcos,” he says. He also attended Austin Community College, earning a degree in Business. It was as a high school senior in Durango that Chase had his first real job in the food service business, at his grandpa’s barbecue restaurant, slicing and serving up smoked meats straight from the pit, including the delicious smoked turkey breast that he learned to make from his grandpa. “The most popular sandwich we serve right now at Chill’s is the smoked turkey club,” Chase says. Chase expanded his culinary repertoire to include fried shrimp, catfish and other fish dishes while working in the kitchen at a steak and seafood restaurant in Galveston, and Chill’s menu options such as shrimp, catfish and mahi po’ boys and gumbo reflect the influence of this experience. The “Mahi a la Beau” (for Beaumont) entree, unique to this restaurant, is a fusion of barbecue, seafood and Creole culinary traditions, featuring blackened mahi topped with gumbo. “The fish absorbs the flavor of the roux,” Chase says, “and it’s been a popular choice for diners.” Comfort foods like chicken fried steak, burgers, fries, chili and queso along with a good selection of meals for kids round out the menu, so there’s likely to be something to please everyone. Guests can also enjoy live music, with a mix of genres, on
weekends. Some of the bands that have performed are Foster and Quinn (Texas Country), Adam Johnson Band, and Will Reyna, who plays a wide variety of music, from Michael Jackson to the Beatles. Chase and Courtney have slowly but surely been working to create a new setting inside and out for their customers, by tearing down the drywall behind the bar that was hiding the 100 year old brick wall, and framing it with rustic barn wood. “Once the pandemic hit and we couldn’t serve guests inside, we started painting the interior to brighten it up,” Chase says, “my cousin in Jacksonville, Texas built us an amazing bar top out of cypress, then poured a colored resin “creek” down the middle to match the color of Cypress Creek.” They installed new flooring inside and exposed more brick in the bathroom hallway and are currently painting the stage and entire exterior, with one exception which is the large mural on the exterior wall facing Ranch Road 12 proclaiming “Wimberley, A little bit of heaven” that was recently restored by local artist Cynthia Neun. imberley residents Bridgette and Jim Hennessee opened The Wooden Spoon in 2013 with a partner, Peggy Sherrill. The frozen yogurt shop and deli is located right on the town’s square and is a favorite hangout for kids and adults. “It was Peggy who came up with the idea of a frozen yogurt shop,” says Bridgette, “and it began more as an investment for us.” A year later, Peggy got out of the business and Bridgette, who also works as a personal trainer and group fitness leader, took over as manager/ operator of one of the sweetest stores in town. The yogurt is consistently delicious and the ambience is always relaxing at The Wooden Spoon. The spacious interior provides comfortable seating with an eclectic collection of vintage tables and chairs, benches, stools, big rocking chairs with oilcloth covered cushions in colorful prints, and even a couple of old-fashioned wooden school chairs with attached desks. Bridgette says, “the atmosphere is cheerful and the outdoor deck, built around a large tree that soars above the tables, overlooks Cypress Creek and is awesome.” Customers are always excited about the variety of flavors of frozen yogurt and the large selection of 50 or so different toppings to choose from: fresh fruits (strawberries, kiwi and blueberries), nuts (pecans and almonds), strawberry bobas, chocolate rocks, and sour gummy worms. “Kids can’t leave without a few rainbow sprinkles or Oreos on their vanilla froyo,” says Bridgette. Most of the yogurt is YoCream, produced by Dannon, with a few additional flavors from a great company called the Frozen Bean. Vanilla and chocolate are perennial favorites, providing the perfect base for the crazily good topping combinations. Outside of that comfort zone, however, horchata is currently one

of the most popular flavors. For the uninitiated, horchata originated as a drink in Mexican restaurants, and is typically made from toasted rice or nut milks spiced up with combinations of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and vanilla. “The kids also love Cake Batter and Cookies & Cream,” Bridgette says, “and the pomegranate, raspberry and mango sunrise sorbets are a hit in the summers because they’re so refreshing.” The deli section at The Wooden Spoon began in 2017 when a group of local ladies sublet part of the kitchen and ran a lunch business called “Fare on the Square” for about five months. The ladies left for other ventures, but “I picked up where they left off, serving soups, salads and sandwiches,” says Bridgette Now customers can enjoy lunch as well as dessert. The six varieties of sandwiches served – the homemade chicken salad and veggie options are standouts – are all made to order. Two featured sandwiches, a grilled cheese and an avocado toast with egg, are named after Bridgette and Jim’s daughters, Ava and Audrey, and are a reminder that The Wooden Spoon is very much a business involving the full support and enthusiasm of the entire Hennessee family. Both girls started working at the shop when they turned fourteen. Their older
daughter, Audrey, a sophomore at Texas State University, is now the manager. Ava is a junior at Wimberley ISD and plays volleyball. The two are still working as much as they can with their busy schedules. Bridgette says, “they both have always been super helpful to me and it’s so much fun when we work together. They help with training new employees and will run to the store anytime I need something. Jim does all of our marketing and is around any time I need him.” The family atmosphere, friendly service, mouthwatering frozen yogurt, freshly made salads and sandwiches make this little shop on the square a welcoming respite for locals and tourists alike. andace and Willis Rothelle and business partners Everett and Lauren Robuck purchased Ceremony Botanical Studio from the previous owner, Natalie Dettmer, in June 2020. “We’re all 40 year Wimberley residents, from grade school all the way through high school,” says Willis, “we were close friends with Natalie and we really wanted to see Ceremony stay open, so we bought it while it was closed during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.” Anyone who has visited this lush garden center will understand why the Rothelle and Robuck families wanted to safeguard its status as quite simply one of the most impressive shops on Wimberley Square. The author, Robin Wall Kimmerer, writes that “plants and animals are our oldest teachers ... they offer us gifts and lessons if we remember how to hear their voices.” This awareness that plants offer gifts and lessons is combined with the importance of ceremony or ritual, another theme of Kimmerer’s book, and the realization that a ceremony doesn’t have to be a huge spectacle to be significant. It may be as simple as watering your plants or lighting a candle. It brought out the best and worst in people. While some hoarded, others went out of their way to share. Some suffered extreme loneliness while others discovered that as life slowed down, family and friends grew closer. Some ate too much and binge watched Netflix, others baked bread and planted a garden. “Interest in houseplants soared,” Jessica says, “as the pandemic ushered us inside, more and more folks took to creating an indoor oasis.” A green space in the desert, a place of refuge from the storm seemed appropriate for these difficult times. Ceremony’s owners have traveled across the country in search of rare plant specimens. With each trip, they bring back truckloads of stock, cactus from Arizona or tropical plants from Florida. “We believe that our cactus selection and specialty air plants may be the best in the state,” Willis says. Everyone seems to agree that Ceremony is known for their weird, interesting plants. One of Willis’ favorite plants at the moment is the Staghorn fern, a plant with uniquely shaped fronds that grows on trees and rocks, is often found in tropical gardens, and likely qualifies as one of those “weird” plants. Other current favorites are the range of Palo Santo items, like incense, oils and raw form Palo Santo, and locally made whole body care products from Folk Apothecary, made with ingredients cultivated in Wimberley. Palo Santo (Spanish meaning “Holy Wood”) is a wild tree native from the Yucatan peninsula to Peru and Venezuela. Belonging to the same family as frankincense and myrrh, it’s widely used as a folk medicine remedy for pain and inflammation or to promote relaxation. T
he most unusual luxury camping experience in Texas, or possibly in the world, may be a stay at Yurtopia Wimberley. Six hilltop remote and three river bluff yurts are spread out over 26 acres of cedar and oak trees, hills and bluffs with limestone outcroppings, and the Blanco River, otherwise known as the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country. Each of the hilltop yurts has a private deck area and amenities including a fire pit, stove, hot tub/plunge pool. These yurts offer total privacy, a sanctuary, an escape from the cares of the world. The river bluff section can be more of a group experience, with shared amenities like hot tubs and fire pits, and the opportunity to experience “river sitting,” basically just relaxing in the river. “You can’t be unhappy in the middle of a big beautiful river,” says American poet and novelist Jim Harrison, who may have had something like river sitting in mind when he wrote those words. FISCHER H Wimberley Institute of Cultures (WIC) once again hosts the Harvest Moon Dinner & Dance on Sunday, October 10, 2021. Located at Historic Fischer Hall (701 Fischer Store Road), this promises to be an evening of fun! Dinner will be catered by Old 300 BBQ and then immediately following will be music performed by Eric Hokkanen & Friends. The Harvest Moon Dinner/Dance is just one more way that WIC works to bring the community together in celebration. WIC received a State Charter and an IRS number as a nonprofit corporation in 1987. The charter was granted to WIC for the purpose of educating the public in the history and prehistory of the Wimberley area. WIC owns and operates the WintersWimberley House, now the Wimberley Valley Museum, just down from the Community Center and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The museum is open to the public and admission is free. However, donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated. Although Ann-Tyler and Brian are both from Texas (Austin/ Wimberley and Dallas), Brian’s father is originally from Russia and his family emigrated to the United States when he was a child. Brian, an international corporate lawyer, minored in Russian and his family’s history piqued his interest in visiting, especially now that travel was more open after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In fact, Moscow was one of the top destinations for travelers in the 1990s. Ann-Tyler and Brian rode on the Trans-Siberian Railway, which has the distinction of being the longest line in the world (around 5,770 miles) connecting Western Russia to the Russian Far East. Their extended first visit was not the end of the couple’s Russian experience as they later moved to Moscow and lived there from 2005-2013. The youngest of their three daughters was born in Moscow and they all attended school there. “Living in Moscow for so many years, we were exposed to a lot of the culture, art and architecture of Central Asia,” Ann-Tyler says. These years were their inspiration for transporting some of that culture back to the rolling hills of Central Texas, where the yurts seem perfectly at home. Yurts are most often associated with the country of Mongolia, although “ger” (which means home) is their word for “yurt.” They have been a distinctive feature of life in Central Asia for at least 3,000 years and were described by the Greek historian, See YURTOPIA, Page 27

Herodotus, as the homes of the Scythians, nomadic warriors who lived in what is now southern Siberia. These tribes preferred the circular dwellings because they were relatively quick to assemble and light to transport as well as being wind-resistant. “We built our first yurt in March 2019,” says Ann-Tyler, “there are other yurts around the state, but ours are different because they are authentic Mongolian made.” All are handmade using natural materials such as Siberian pine, camel hide and thick sheep’s wool, and using natural techniques like steaming the wood to bend it. The yurts are painted by a family in Mongolia. The rolls of lattice and multiple layers of covering arrive in a pallet ready to set up, shipped from Mongolia to Canada and on to Wimberley, where it takes about a day for two to four people to set up. Although adults of all ages have enjoyed blissful stays at Yurtopia, millennials (ages 25 to 40) have been their main demographic, according to Ann-Tyler. Perhaps the reason for this is that, at least according to some sociologists, in addition to being fluent in the digital language of computers and the internet, millennials are especially drawn to experiences rather than things, and spending a couple of nights in a genuine Mongolian made yurt definitely qualifies as a memorable experience. hat’s the big flap about in Wimberley? Well if it’s early October, there could be only one reason and, quite frankly, it’s driving a lot of folks a bit batty. But, that’s a good thing if you’re into ecology, a lot of culture and even a little craziness because, this month, this bucolic burg celebrates the high season by lauding its amazing, native bat population. Say what? Yep, since 2019, each October (2020 was COVID-canceled, boo!) the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance (a local group dedicated exclusively to promoting the area’s abundant fine arts offerings) enlists the aid of thousands of resident Mexican Free-tailed bats to help introduce locals and visitors alike to the many, practicing artists, craftsmen and women and other visually and/or audibly gifted citizens, all who happily make the greater-Wimberley area home. Appropriately labeled, Wings Over Wimberley, it truly is a high-flying, two-day celebration of environmental and man-made wonders guaranteed to please, not just the earth-bound but, the bats as well. As mentioned, the alliance’s role is to tout Wimberley’s diverse, cultural offerings – art, music, chow! – and the artists, galleries, wineries, eateries and musicians that provide the same. And, because of the growing understanding of the ecological benefits that all bats provide coupled with the area’s burgeoning creative scene, it seemed a “natural” to stage a happening publicizing both. What a great idea! The premier WOW event was a hit. This incarnation is destined to be even better. Batter up! Slated to be held again on the spacious, conveniently-close to the square, shaded property of the (generous) Ozona Bank, that overlooks the Cypress Creek Bridge (underneath is where the town’s bat

colony resides), visitors will again be treated on site to a host of exceptional, vending participants all eager to introduce their creations (many are bat-themed), whether esthetically pleasing to the eye, taste buds and/or ear. Photos courtesy of the artists. with a number of the actual artists who are scheduled to “be on hand,” perhaps while savoring a Middleton Brewing Company “Bat brew” or two while also enjoying other exceptional edibles from some of the event’s many food purveyors. The kiddos will want to head over to the children’s craft area, run by the local Girl Scout troop while mom and dad shop, sip, sup and, soak in the fun atmosphere. Then, on each day before sunset, all will want to turn their attentions to the bridge to watch the colony make its thrilling exit as thousands of bats cork-screw into the air for their nocturnal feeding. Whoosh! But for many, it’s the music. On both days, the must-see performances are seemingly non-stop commencing at 4 pm Friday when the always popular Kit Holmes takes the stage. Following his performance, at 7 pm, local favorite Marvin Boterra and his Broken Glass Band continue the audible entertainment breaking only at “bat flight time,” before resuming and playing on until 9 pm. Saturday (October 2) is a repeat except the musicians will start earlier — at 11 am — when Wimberley-born Lance Lipinski steps up to the mic for a two-hour set. He’s followed by Jennifer Zavaleta, another local gal, who excels as a vocalist and guitarist, playing until 3 pm. The town’s own Roy Cunningham follows, then to close everything out, Texan Hale Baskin and her Jazz Addiction hits the stage at 7 pm. All of these gifted performers are guaranteed to, quite simply, WOW! Added to the daily mix is the addition of a number of scientific “bat” experts ready to explain why these flying mammals are not only extremely interesting as a species but, more importantly, also provide great benefits to the environment as well. Bat appreciation and conservation will be stressed, from the experts but also from the event’s special guest – the real Batman. The Batmobile will be there too – how do you think he got to Wimberley from Gotham City? Come have your picture taken with a genuine superhero! So, this October 1-2, prepare to go a little batty attending the always-a-treat, 2021 Wings Over Wimberley, a one-of-a-kind bat-enthused festival of flapping. Not only will all of your senses be stimulated, but you might take care of a little early Christmas (or Halloween) shopping to boot. Rev. Jim Denham CHAPEL IN THE HILLS Reverend Jim Denham and Molly moved to Wimberley from South Padre Island where Jim served as resident Chaplain for Chapel by the Sea since 2008. From 1999 to 2008, Reverend Denham had previously served as Senior Pastor for the Chapel in the Hills in Wimberley. Jim has also served as Director of Chaplaincy Services for the Seton Hospital System, Pastor of Austin Heights Baptist Church and Hospice Chaplain for Girling Home Hospice. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Texas in Austin, a Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY, and Clinical Pastoral Education from Baptist Hospital, San Antonio. “Let’s jump start the joy and happiness and see what God can do with our efforts to be his followers at our special place to worship, our church, Chapel in the Hills,” says Reverend Denham.
