Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance
By Bonnie EisslerTexas is a great state with a lot to offer, otherwise we probably wouldn’t have more people moving here than to any other state, but “it’s also one of the worst in supporting the arts,” says Dede Taylor, Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance (WVACA) Board Communications Director.
It’s unfortunately true that Texas typically ranks near the bottom of the heap in funding the arts, 47th last year, but the good news is that the WVACA has enthusiastically supported arts and culture in Wimberley since the Texas Commission of the Arts designated the town a Texas Cultural District in 2015, with Texas Film Friendly and Texas Music Friendly designations added in 2019 and 2022.
“Applying for and getting those designations was a concerted effort to bring more attention to the wonderful artists community we have here,” Dede says. There’s been an explosion of interest in visiting Wimberley as an arts destination . . . the combination of the arts (community events, festivals, performances) and the natural beauty of the area draw thousands of people to town each year. The cultural district includes galleries, live music venues and restaurants in and around Wimberley Square.
An umbrella non-profit organization that promotes a vibrant cultural arts community, they encourage visual artists, performance and literary artists through appreciation, collaboration and education. In 2021, they expanded this appreciation to include fine restaurants, bakeries, wineries, breweries and coffee roasters. Their membership includes non-profit groups, businesses, individual

It was designed by artist Chuck Cordes with painting help from Alexis Pointe residents and friends. Photo by Katy Starr. See WVACA, Page 8Wimberley has always attracted visual artists -- oil painters, sculptors, glass artists, photographers, fiber artists. The Art on 12 gallery, a member of WVACA, showcases high quality talent in the local community, as well as nationally known artists like watercolorist Gordon Fowler and wildlife photographer Rodney Bursiel. They also offer art classes and sponsor art shows/competitions. The Wimberley Valley Art League (WVAL) Gallery is located in the Wimberley Community Center (WCC) and provides a venue for visitors to view and purchase the works of league members.
WVACA also hosts a number of special activities throughout the year, often in partnership with other organizations. “We like to collaborate whenever possible for events and performances,” Dede says. Three of these events are: the ongoing public art project Bootiful Wimberley, Storyfest, returning for the third year in October, and the Stars Over Wimberley Benefit Concert Series.
The “Bootiful” boots, six-foot tall fiberglass cowboy boots painted in distinctive styles by local artists, were presented to the public at a festive reception at WCC in September 2014 and then

installed at sponsor locations around town. Initially the number of boots was limited to 50, but the continuing high interest in the project from sponsors and artists persuaded the board to approve ten more boots, which brings the total to 60. Visiting the sites to see these boots is an enjoyable and educational way to spend an afternoon.
Last October, WVACA gifted a bronze boot sculpture to the city. “Hill Country Soul” was created by Driftwood resident Michael Hall, an internationally renowned sculptor, assisted by another Driftwood artist, Paul Malachi. This beautiful and unique boot features extensive detailing with stitches and patina highlights and is installed at the new Oak Park Welcome Center near the town square.
Wimberley StoryFest returns for a three day festival in October at historic Pioneer Town and will feature the stories, songs, culture, history, cuisine and art of Wimberley Valley. Texas and Americana music, stories about cowboys, ranchers, cedar choppers and outlaws will be centered on the Hill Country heritage. Partnering with Wimberley Institute of Cultures for this event, all of WVACA’s four pillars (visual, performing, literary, and culinary arts) converge in an extraordinary way.
The Stars Over Wimberley Benefit Concert series is another collaboration, this time with Wimberley Players, that showcases Texas musical artists and supports the Robert Moreman Memorial Scholarships for creative Wimberley graduating high school seniors. “Our goal is to make a meaningful difference,” Dede says. WVACA continues to make a meaningful difference, not only for those students who receive scholarships, but to the people of Wimberley whose lives have been enormously enriched by this dedicated group that nurtures creativity of all kinds.

Blanco Brew
By Colleen BrooksIf you’re looking for a cozy spot to enjoy a cup of coffee with a homemade pastry or locally-sourced bite, look no further than Blanco Brew. Owner, Rachel Emry, opened the coffee shop in March 2019. She and her dad, Tim Walkup, wanted to open a coffee shop together, and when the space became available, they decided to bring that dream to life.
Tim is a coffee roaster, so all the coffee in the shop is locally roasted, fair trade, 100% organic coffee from Texas Artisan Roasters in New Braunfels. Rachel loves to bake, and they renovated a former office space already in the building to create a small bakery.
Coffee aficionados can choose from a variety of hot and cold drinks, including espresso, drip coffee, and cold brew with any added flavor they choose, in addition to teas and fruit smoothies. And it’s best to bring your appetite... you don’t want to miss the meat-stuffed croissants, cinnamon rolls and Danishes, all made from scratch. Rachel smiles, “Everything is made in-house, with the exception of our sugar cookies.”
Rachel graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy in 2004 and became a personal trainer in 2011. “When I was in culinary school, there was a sign with a quote that said, ‘Why are you here’? It inspired me to revolutionize the way people eat,” Rachel explains. “I wanted to bring us back to real food, the way our grandparents ate, and help people get healthy to help them reach their goals in a holistic way. So, I decided to combine the two.”
She’s been a personal chef in Wimberley since 2012 and focuses on helping her clients choose the right meal plan for their body type. Rachel also caters local events through My Chef DuJour. “Our catering services include a menu that can be customized to meet the specific dietary needs and preferences of up to 50 guests,” Rachel explains. “Our options range from casual to upscale, and our catering team can provide a range of services, including event planning and decor.”

The kitchen at Blanco Brew is always hopping, as the shop serves lunch weekdays 11 am to 2 pm. Diners can choose from the popular chicken salad, fresh-made deli sandwiches, garden and Caesar salads, paninis and flatbread pizzas.
“Most of our vegetables are from local farmers, and we carry nitrate-free meats and high-quality cheeses, in addition to our house-made chipotle mayo and tapenade,” Rachel explains. “Everything is customizable, and we also have a wide selection of grab-and-go salads and sandwiches for people on the go.”
Blanco Brew also hosts a variety of events, including Coffee and Cars (popular with car enthusiasts),
The Market (with locally made art, crafts, and produce from local artisans), and Coffee & Pups (where you can meet dogs that are available for adoption through the Wimberley Adoption Group).
The inviting shop is an ideal location for a study date or a casual meeting. Be sure to inquire about their signature drink, the Bourbon Barrel cold brew. It’s made from Guatemalan green coffee beans that are aged in a bourbon barrel for two weeks.
“The bean absorbs all the bourbon that’s left in the barrel, and the beans double in size. There’s no alcohol content, but you get the taste, smell, and velvety mouth feel of a high-quality barrel. You might even get a placebo effect,” Rachel laughs.
The Bourbon Barrel cold brew is popular in the fall and can be made into a macchiato or Frappuccino. The barrels are sourced locally from Garrison Brothers Distillery in Hye.
You’ll see lots of locals enjoying Rachel’s homemade bites, catching up with friends, or working on their laptops at Blanco Brew. There’s plenty of room to spread out inside or on the deck. Rachel invites you to “come for the coffee, stay for the community.”

Sweet Water COOKIES
By Bonnie EisslerEight years after launching Sweet Water Cookies, where “creating cookies is a passion and an art form,” Cindy Hunter is as enthusiastic and motivated as ever about bringing freshly baked, custom decorated cookies to her customers in Wimberley and surrounding towns in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.
While Cindy’s heart is still centered around home and family, and the classic sugar cookie with royal icing still reigns supreme, her portfolio has expanded to include other sweet treats like chocolate chip cookies and brownies. For some of the decorating, she now uses a direct-to-food printer to print edible patterns onto the surface of the cookies. This allows for more intricate and photorealistic designs that she often combines with hand lettering and flourishes for a layered professional finish.
The designs are creative, whimsical, cute, sweet or nostalgic, as the occasion requires, and always beautiful. Just as important, the

SWEET WATER COOKIES
cookies taste delicious. They aren’t mass produced but are a labor of love, from making and baking to icing and decorating. Cindy’s husband, a retired firefighter, makes the dough and bakes the cookies and she makes the icings and decorates them. Several different theme-related designs tell a story that is unique to each event whether it’s a milestone birthday, high school graduation, first day of school, retirement party, wedding or baby shower. Cindy says that while they still do customs, “the business is shifting to focus more on holiday pre-sales and markets, as well as large custom corporate and event orders.”
The tradition of decorating sugar cookies has a long history and is a wonderful way to bring families and friends together. The decorating classes are great opportunities to get everyone, from kids to grandmothers, involved in a creative activity. Autumn means football, Halloween, Thanksgiving ... and Sweet Water Cookies is here for all of these events and more. In September, as part of a Fall Fun Day, Cindy will teach her class how to decorate cookies, using the rich colors and iconic shapes of the season. These and other classes offered during the year meet at Bella Vida Bed and Breakfast Retreat Center, an idyllic setting in a farmhouse style home.
We all experience highs and lows, good times and bad in life, not just personally but in our family and community lives. After the 2015 Memorial Day flood, Cindy was shaken by the destruction it caused and the tranquil beauty she associated with the creeks and rivers was temporarily marred; however, she also wanted to do something she felt passionate about, which led her back to her love of creating and to Sweet Water Cookies.
The 2020 pandemic brought its own set of challenges, but the Sweet Water Cookies’ team was encouraged by the amazing level of support received from people asking what they could do to help the small business. They shifted to selling cookie kits (pre-baked cookies, frosting and sprinkles) for the first four months, selling 100 cookie kits in only ten hours during Easter.
“Word of mouth has been our best friend in this business,” Cindy says, “Sweet Water Cookies is an outlet for my creativity that allows me to spread joy all over.” Photos courtesy Sweet Water Cookies.
FYI • Expertly decorated and packaged to perfection, these custom cookies enhance the theme and are the main attraction at any private party or corporate event. For more information, to place an order or register for a class, visit sweetwatercookies.com, send a message on Facebook, or email cindy@sweetwatercookies.com.
CHULITA’S
By Ernie AlgeltDiscerning ladies who trade at Chulita’s on the Wimberley Square are some of the easiest to pick out of the crowd. Invariably, they’re the ones smiling and laughing, making a fun and fashionable impression on others and obviously just loving life! Yep, these multi-hued stand-outs definitely come across as very colorful in a culturally cool sort of way and uber-cute as well but, after a visit to Wimberley’s premier imported (almost entirely handcrafted) clothing and accessory outlet that particular take-away is just unavoidable. Really, it’s always been part of the package and maybe that’s the reason Chulita’s remains so darn popular. Why, what a bright idea!
Chulita’s, which in Spanish translates to “little cutie,” is the natural outgrowth of the boutique’s founder and owner, Donna McKennon, a South Texas native who always loved traveling to the Mexican border dining, sight-seeing and especially shopping. It was in the “tiendas” where, as a keen-eyed youngster, she developed an appreciation for the styles and workmanship she encountered that often led to personal purchases. And, these purchases inevitably generated complements from friends and, even strangers who would often ask, “Where did you get that?” Later, at a point in her life when she was “looking to make a fresh start,” the idea of going into the business of actually selling some of those authentic fashions and styles seemed very appealing.
See CHULITA’S, Page 22
Owner Donna McKennon welcomes you to Chulita’s!Deciding to take the plunge, Donna appropriately dubbed her new enterprise Chulita’s – Now how cute is that?First opening in Dripping Springs in 2009 but struggling a bit, after five years, the savvy proprietress made the decision in 2014 to relocate to Wimberley with its visitor-friendly ambiance.
Starting new can be tough but, after almost two decades of steady growth coupled with having recently relocated to the convenient town square, the store is now poised to reach an even larger consumer base that will only add to the existing repeat-clientele she’s enjoyed serving over the years.
And, after a visit to Chulita’s you’ll understand why her lovingly-nurtured undertaking continues to be such a “destination.” Inside the cozy merchandise-filled establishment, guests are delightfully surprised by the colorful diversity and amount on display and, how it’s all so “very neat!”
The decor and the inventory harken back to those lively Mexican markets she loved so much. And, that “look and feel” is further reinforced by the racks and shelves featuring an array of beautiful Puebla dresses and blouses, San Antonino dresses and blouses (these are the exquisite hand embroidered and crocheted “Mexican wedding dresses” that can take up to two months to complete), Alpaca ponchos (in season) hats, rebozo wraps, table runners, oilcloth grocery totes, purses, pillows,
Taxco jewelry, leather works, even a large inventory of Guayabera shirts (for the guys) and more.
It’s all personally selected by Donna and, almost all imported, not only from Mexico, but also Peru, Guatemala and Ecuador. Again, just about everything is handmade, the craftsmanship is always superb and, depending on the product, sized to fit adults, children and, in some cases, infants too. Whatever, most think “fiesta” when encountering the breathtaking assortment and amazingly, it’s all right here in Wimberley! Viva Chulita’s!The last surprise is the pricing. With such quality, shoppers delight when discovering that most of the merch range between an affordable $35.00 up to a modest $75.00. Gift items start at $10.00. You definitely won’t feel guilty making a purchase so, buy “dos,” one for you and one for a friend – they’ll thank you. Gracias!
Well senora or senorita, if you want to be noticed like all the other attractive “chulitas” who garner so much attention then, there’s only one place to go (especially when in Wimberley) and, that’s the wonderfully unique Chulita’s on the Wimberley Square! Photos courtesy Chulita’s.
FYI • Chulita’s is at 112 Wimberley Square in Wimberley. Open seven days a week 10 am to 5 pm, except Saturday when it’s open until 6 pm. For more information, call 512940-6514 or find Chulita’s on Facebook.
THE Love Your Space Place
By Bonnie EisslerAfun blockbuster movie in theaters this summer features Barbie, the iconic fashion doll that’s been around for more than 60 years. The movie, like the doll herself, has avid fans and detractors. Setting aside those big and sometimes polarizing themes concerning mortality and female empowerment, let’s consider what may be the most important message from Barbie – home décor matters!
There is a literal total home redecoration midway through the movie where Barbie’s dream house, with fluffy pillows and bedazzled seashell bed, is transformed into Ken’s man cave with hyper-masculine themes including horse paintings and saloon doors.
Apparently, Barbie’s perfectly pink world isn’t exactly Ken’s cup of tea. We all want a space we can love.
Jill Ainsworth is the owner of The Love Your Space Place, an exciting new luxury furniture and home design store in Wimberley. She has a passion for decorating and helping her clients bring their dream homes to life. Jill and her husband Kerry, a custom home builder, moved to the hill country last March to be closer to their son and his family; in just one week they found the store and a place to call home.
“My approach to design is to do what I like and to buy furniture and accessories for the store that especially appeal to me,” Jill says. She
See LOVE YOUR SPACE PLACE, Page 26
Owner Jill Ainsworth welcomes you to The Love Your Space Place.also appreciates that style is very subjective and that her first choice isn’t necessarily what some customers prefer, so with that awareness in mind, offers a wide selection in a variety of styles, from traditional to farmhouse to modern. She makes buying trips to the design districts and furniture markets held every year, sometimes several times a year, in major cities around the country including Dallas, Las Vegas, Atlanta and High Point, North Carolina. These shows are exclusively for retailers and interior designers, and people fly in from all over to see the newest home collections from major companies like Bernhardt, Mayo and Classic Home, mirrors from Uttermost, paintings from Uma. The oversized chaise lounge chairs from John Michael, a new company whose furniture Jill recently added to the showroom, have a special formulated gel cushioning and are the ultimate in comfort and coziness.
The chairs and sofas in the store feature performance fabric upholstery and are custom made. Wood stains, fabrics and trims, like nailheads, can all be selected according to the customer’s preference. Performance fabrics, such as lightweight durable polyester, can stand up to the wear and tear that comes with everyday activities.
Jill’s experience in the furniture and design industry began in 1981 when she worked in a furniture store with her dad in Tyler, Texas. Selling furniture gave her an appreciation for the importance of having a good sofa. She remembers the sofa in her mother’s home as one of her favorite pieces, and part of the reason for this may be the pleasant memories that she has of her mother’s gift for hospitality, and friends and family gathered in the warm and welcoming space.
In 2006, Jill and Kerry moved to Rockwall, near Dallas. “We had a store there and that’s where I got into design,” she says, “clients needed or wanted more … as I worked with them to select furniture and décor, we realized they also needed window treatments, so we looked for fabrics and trim for custom drapes.” They’d have their drapes made, furniture reupholstered and whatever else they needed at one of the workrooms that Jill used in the Dallas area.
Now, Jill brings all these experiences to the design table when she consults with clients at The Love Your Space Place. She begins by looking at what a client already has in their home. “I see the colors they like, the kinds of light fixtures, if they prefer carpet or tile or wood,” she says, “is their style contemporary or farmhouse, eclectic or traditional, and so on.” After that, they look through books of fabric samples, wallpaper, rug samples, take all the necessary measurements, and the work begins to transform that person’s space into one he or she will love. Photos by Bonnie Eissler.
FYI • The Love Your Space Place is at 600 FM 3237. Business hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, call 512-722-3088 or visit the website at theloveyourspaceplace.com.
THE Wimberley Village Library
By Bonnie EisslerWhat began as a humble village library has grown into a beloved gathering place in the Wimberley community. If you’ve driven down FM 2325 recently, you may have noticed the construction of the new Wimberley Village Library adjacent to the original building. Founded in 1976 by a passionate group of locals who wanted to provide access to information and books for our community, the library has grown and evolved over the years. The original building will remain and is scheduled for an update once the new building is complete.
“We’re doubling our footprint,”
Carolyn Manning, library director, explains.
“With the new build, we’ll have over 16,000 feet total combined with the existing space. We’re very excited because it will be a place where people can come to read, connect, and discover with others.”
The new building will be connected by an enclosed bridge and will accommodate the growing amount of library programs and collection materials. Carolyn elaborates, “The new building will have expanded youth services and a large meeting room that will be able to accommodate up to 100 people. It will also have a crafts lab where the craft librarians will present programs regularly and a room for the teens to gather and participate in their programs.”
The library’s current collection includes more than 40,000 books, magazines, and other materials, in addition to online resources including e-books, audiobooks, and streaming videos through Libby and Kanopy.

Children ages 3-7 can learn at bilingual Spanish story time, and kids ages 5-11 can participate in the Lego® challenges in The Discovery Club. A variety of programs for ’tweens and teens include chess club, board game night, Minecraft, Virtual Reality, Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, Dungeon and Dragons and anime. Spanish classes and Board Game Day are also offered for homeschoolers.
Plenty of learning activities and programs for adults are available: Spanish, Technology classes, CPR, and body movement classes (EASE Chair Exercises, Gentle Yoga, and Qigong with Master Kim); in addition to The Wimberley Apron Society, book clubs, a writer’s group, Adult Craft Lab Saturday Studio, Ladies’ Night Out, Connect with a Wimberley Author, family movie night, and Friends by Mail, a pen pal program that connects members with residents in a local assisted living facility.
“We’ve raised all the funds for the new building, but we are still fundraising for renovation of the original, which we hope will take place as soon as we move into the new building,” explains Carolyn. “We want to create a few more meeting rooms and study rooms so we can transform our current meeting room into a year-round Friend’s Book Sale. We also need to upgrade some of the areas of the original building such as the kitchen and bathrooms, in addition to our A/C and electrical units.”
The library will expand program offerings once both building projects are complete. To reach the goal, they still need donations. If you would like to help make this project a success, you can make a one-time donation to the foundation or become a monthly donor. All donations are tax-deductible and can be made on the library’s website or in person at their original building.
In today’s digital world, it’s rare to have a place where people can still connect with others and escape the seclusion the online world has created. The Wimberley Village Library remains a place where there is still value in human connection. Come read, connect, and discover – the doors are open six days a week! WIMBERLEY HISTORY
The Wimberley Square in the 1930s.
In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the Wimberley Square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

REV. JIM DENHAM CHAPEL IN THE HILLS
Chapel in the Hills is a Christian, Interdenominational Church that has been serving the Lord here in Wimberley since 1949. If you are curious about our worship style, music, and the way we worship, please go on-line to our Facebook page and watch one of our services. This will tell you much about our Church and Sunday worship, but when you visit, you will discover our personal friendship and fellowship for yourself.
Reverend Jim Denham has served as Pastor for this Chapel twice: from 1999 to 2008, then returning in 2014 to again serve as Pastor. He has also served as a Hospice Chaplain, Hospital Chaplain, and pastor in several other congregations here in Texas. Our church’s tag line for decades has been “There are no strangers here, only friends you haven’t met.” Come for a visit on Sundays at 9 am with Guitar music, or at 11 am with a Choir and English handbells. Hope to see you on Sunday.
Sunday Services: 9 am Church Service, 10 am Sunday School, 11 am Church Service. www.WimberleyChapelInTheHills.com (online service)
REV. KEVIN LJ SCHUBERT ST. STEPHENS
Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at St. Stephen’s! We have many wonderful offerings of fellowship, worship, lifelong learning, and outreach that are integral to the community. “We are truly a welcoming community that is committed to being in relationship with God and one another. It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you.”
– The Rev. Kevin LJ Schubert, Rector of St. Stephen’s
On Sundays we offer two worship services: one at 8 am in the Chapel and another at 10:30 am in the Sanctuary. Children’s Sunday School is offered during the 10:30 am service, September through May.
The Nursery, for ages infant through 4 years, is available Sundays during Sunday worship and during seasonal adult Lifelong Learning classes.
We have also an active program for Teens that meets weekly. Adults have several opportunities for lifelong learning on Sundays, as well as Bible study groups, and social and service activities throughout the week. We also offer a mid-week Holy Eucharist service on Wednesdays at 10:30 am in the Chapel, which includes healing prayers for those in need.
