eautiful Wimberley has long been known as a patron of the arts, and now the Wimberley Valley Arts and Cultural Alliance sponsors a special public sculpture project specifically to celebrate this reputation. The Bootiful Wimberley project showcases a diverse range of art in the form of 30 giant fiberglass boots, manufactured by Fountain People in San Marcos and individually painted by area artists. The boots will be placed around the city — in the Square and along roadsides — come October in the hopes of inspiring artsbased tourism similar to initiatives in Dallas and Houston. Previous projects have featured everything from painted cows to goats, but

Tiffany Huff paints a boot which will grace Wimberley’s Wild West Store. Photo courtesy Wimberley Fine Arts Center. the decision to use boots as the subject matter this time around was mostly practical. “We initially wanted to paint deer, but decided against that because they would be too fragile,” Shelley explains. “Because they are displayed in a public setting, there’s a greater risk of damage from people sitting on them or touching the antlers and so on.” Aside from the fact that boots aren’t quite as appealing as giant painted cows for small children to climb on, they provide an excellent canvas for painting — and as an added bonus, they symbolize Wimberley’s western heritage and the rugged nature of the Texas Hill Country. Boot artist Shelley Esser is also a member of the steering committee in charge of merchandising and events. The native Texan dabbles in many different forms of art, from drawing to reworking vintage jewelry into new, one-of-a-kind pieces. imberley Players was born in an elementary school cafeteria and spent its formative years in a converted greenhouse, surviving rising floodwaters and midnight invasions by mysterious critters. Celebrating its 35th birthday at an ice cream social this summer, founders and original participants of the community theater reminisced about those early days, when quilts were hung from ceilings to improve poor acoustics and new actors were lured to auditions with the promise of a home-baked pie. Since 1996, when the current 110seat Wimberley Playhouse became the organization’s new home, shows have demonstrated a production level typical of much larger communities, says Board member and long-time volunteer, Julie Ray. But through all the years and hundreds of productions, she says, the Players have remained focused on their original goal: bringing the magic of live theater to the Wimberley community. That community is now growing beyond Wimberley into the larger Central Texas area. “What was our little community theater is rapidly becoming a destination stage, attracting widespread audiences,” Julie reports. At the end of performances, those audiences are so often overheard utter-

ing the same phrase that The Players have adopted it as their tagline: “Amazing Theater!” With a growing population of new talent and new audiences, the Players regularly stage five productions a year— a mix of dramas, comedies, thrillers and musicals. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings and a Sunday matinee over a four-weekend period. The 2014 season has seen productions of “Charley’s Aunt,” a popular farce from the 19th century; the comedic and moving “Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean;” Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winner, “The Skin of Our Teeth;” and Mel Brooks’ musical, “Young Frankenstein,” with the largest cast ever assembled on the Players’ stage. The season concludes with Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple” on stage November 14 through December 7, 2014. Professionally staffed with just one full-time executive producer, Adam Witko, the Players rely on a large contingent of volunteers to accomplish a myriad of tasks, both on stage and off. Weeks before each show opens, the Playhouse parking lot swarms with cars, as volunteer construction crews and painters, seamstresses and prop managers begin marshaling forces. Rehearsals and many late nights follow for directors, actors, lighting techs, and choreogSee PLAYERS, page 7

Wimberley Players would not exist without the many dedicated volunteers of all ages and skill levels who contribute their time and talent—from working in the Box Office to distributing posters, assembling the playbill or writing emails to patrons, says Julie. Opportunities also exist to be a part of the Wimberley Players as a member and supporter, she adds. Tax-deductible memberships are available at a variety of levels. Hospitality volunteers are needed to plan menus and decorations for social functions that help the organization. Volunteering work hours at the local Village Store also translates into dollars to support the theater. “Even if you’ve never been behind

the scenes of a theater, don’t know where ‘upstage is’ or how a spotlight works…if you have a desire to learn we will teach you,” promises the volunteer page on the Players’ web site. An annual event each fall raises important funds and public awareness for the Wimberley Players. This year’s theme is “Strawberry Fields Forever: A Groovy ’60s Party.” The fundraiser is slated for October 12 at Rancho Mirando, located at 6600 Farm Market 32. Make reservations by phone at 512-295-1954. FYI • The Wimberley Playhouse is located at 450 Old Kyle Road, just off the Wimberley Square. All in the family at San Angel Mexican Bar & Grill

ucked away on River Road—one of Wimberley’s essential meandering scenic drives—San Angel’s Mexican Bar and Grill is an unexpected oasis for many thirsty, hungry tourists and a five-star favorite for a growing number of regulars who can’t get enough of the restaurant’s delectable green sauce, charro beans, chimichangas, Mexican martinis and homemade natural margaritas.

Delicious food is a must, of course, but for owners and proprietors Daysi Flores and Daniel Quintanar, the friendly family atmosphere that they foster is just as important. Their family wants customers to feel as if they are part of a big happy family, eating and drinking and laughing together. Teenage daughter Yureimy helps out as hostess, greeting and directing guests to their tables and assisting with other tasks, and her younger sister, Aylin, is also well-known to regular patrons. Perhaps one reason Daysi prioritizes this cozy ambience stems from the many years she spent working in family-owned restaurants. Born in Mexico City, she moved to Texas when she was in the second grade, first to Houston and then to Round Rock. “My uncle owned a restaurant in Houston,” Daysi says, and “my mother owns two restaurants including one in Round Rock—Taqueria Arandinas, which opened about 20 years ago— and El Rey in Dripping Springs, west of town on Highway 290.” Daysi worked as a bookkeeper for a chiropractor but continued working for her mother’s restaurant three days a week when she wasn’t at her bookkeeping job. “When I was talking to my mother about opening a restaurant,

became available a couple of years ago, Daysi had second thoughts. “We fell in love with Wimberley and with this place,” she says, “I thought, I’m going to make it like a Mexican See SAN ANGEL, page 9

They considered a name with the word “house” or “home” in it to evoke a comfortable familial feeling. “We thought of so many different names for this restaurant but none of them seemed right, so we decided there must be an angel behind all of this (finding the place, the good location, the town) – and we had our name.” San Angel’s offers a wide selection of appetizers and traditional Mexican fare that—according to many customers—are less Tex-Mex and more authentically Mexican dishes. In addition to queso, enchiladas, tacos and fajitas, they offer a greater variety of breakfast items than one usually finds: scrambled eggs with dried beef, tomatoes, jalapenos, and onions; egg with mole sauce; and the delightfully named “huevos divorciados,” two eggs

topped with fried tortillas, cheese, ranchero and green sauces. Diners can also enjoy daily lunch specials at San Angel. These include carnitas en chile verde or chalupas plate on Mondays; enchiladas al gusto Tuesdays; tortilla soup or chicken flautas on Wednesdays; Thursday’s crispy taco plate; and carne guisada on Fridays. Daysi points out that San Angel’s frequently complimented green sauce is not overly hot, because it’s made with avocado (unlike the considerably hotter green sauce her mother serves at El Rey). Try some for yourself, along with good food and a truly friendly family atmosphere, when you visit San Angel Mexican Bar and Grill. FYI • San Angel Mexican Bar and Grill is at 500 River Road. Sanda’s Salsa expands to a larger market

S

By Bonnie Eissler

andra Schaub began making salsa (Spanish for “sauce”) when she was just eight years old, living in Round Rock, Texas, with her parents and three brothers. “I didn’t really like sweets as child,” she says, “I would eat chips and salsa instead of dessert.” Her early efforts yielded good results and over the years her stellar salsa-making skills were in great demand for her signature dish that was always a hit at pot-lucks and holiday parties.

But she probably never imagined— while stirring up spicy salsas in her mother’s kitchen—that she would one day have her very own wholesale food business, Sandra’s Salsa. But encouragement from a boss who thought she should try to market her salsa, combined with her desire for flexible hours so she could spend more time with her children —“and not compromise my primary goal of being an accessible Mom” —prompted Sandra to take a leap of faith and strike out on her own.

Sandra Schaub, owner of Sandra’s Salsa, proudly displays her popular salsas at Wimberley’s Brookshire Brothers. Photo by Bonnie Eissler. “I worked for a mortgage company in Austin,” she says, “and I would take my homemade salsa to office parties, birthdays, lunches.” Everyone loved it and wanted more, so Sandra started making batches of salsa to sell to her co-workers. With these sales and encouragement from her boss, she launched her new career while on maternity leave with her youngest child (who is now 16 years old). Sandra first opened the business in 1998 in Dripping Springs, leasing commercial kitchen space after regular hours. Three years later, after moving to Wimberley, she leased her own dedicated commercial kitchen to meet a growing demand for her product. Sandra’s Salsa is available in both “mild” and “hot” versions. Made with whole tomatoes and other fresh ingredients, including onions and serrano peppers, the salsa has no preservatives or MSG and has a 32-day shelf life “from conception to consumption,” Sandra says. Brookshire Brothers— with 180 stores across Texas, including a location in Wimberley—was an early supporter and among the first to carry Sandra’s Salsa. “There were very few other refrigerated salsas in the stores in 1998,” explains Sandra, although in recent years more companies have entered that market, along with the general increase in the consumption of salsa in the United States. With the expansion of HEB superstores into smaller towns like Dripping Springs and Wimberley, Sandra needed to get her products into these big stores or risk losing the ability to supply many of her previous customers. In January 2013, she entered “HEB’s Primo Pick—Quest for Texas Best,” a contest designed to identify locally made

Delicious, fresh, refrigerated Sandra’s Salsa—available in mild or hot. Find it in Wimberley at Brookshire Brothers and Hill Country Natural Foods. Photo courtesy Sandra’s Salsa. products to sell in HEB stores. The top three finishers were guaranteed shelf space. Sandra’s Salsa made it into the top 25—out of more 700 entries—the only salsa to reach that level. An impressive achievement, but there was no guarantee of a spot in the store without proof of sufficient customer demand for the product. Sandra’s subsequent social media campaign brought in so many customer requests for Sandra’s Salsa that HEB stores in Dripping Springs, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Kyle, Buda, Bulverde (as well as the location planned in Wimberley) will not only carry the salsa, but also promote it as a Primo Pick – designated Texas products customers want. FYI • Salsa is the most popular condiment in the United States, now outselling that long-time favorite for fries and hot dogs, ketchup. Email Sandra at sandras.salsa@ gmail.com for more information, and pick up a container of Sandra’s Salsa in Wimberley at Brookshire Brothers on Ranch Road 12 or at Hill Country Natural Foods on Farm Market 2325. You can also find Sandra’s Salsa on Facebook.

he Sugar Shack Bakery in Wimberley is a dessert lovers’ paradise. From wedding cakes and pies to breakfast quiches and cookies, they’ve got you covered. Dietary restrictions?

A tough decision: so many delectable choices await at the Sugar Shack Bakery. Photo courtesy Monica Coggin.

Sugar Shack also offers gluten-free, sugar-free, paleo and vegan options. The Sugar Shack has been in Wimberley for more than 10 years. Owners Peggy and Terry Honaker and their daughter Monica Coggin took over the four years ago when the previous owner decided to retire, and the family recently moved the business to a new location on River Road (next to the Leaning Pear) to be closer to their customer base. Truly, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the choices awaiting in the cases when you walk into the Sugar Shack. With so many tasty treats to choose, the hardest part about visiting is deciding what to get. If you visit for breakfast, kolaches, cinnamon rolls, sticky buns and filled croissants are just a few of the things you can choose from. There is also fresh brewed coffee. For lunch, choose from croissant sandwiches such as chicken salad with cranberries, egg salad with capers, or black forest ham and swiss. Some of the sweeter treats include triple chocolate sour cream espresso cake, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, coconut macaroons, and lemon bars. Their cupcakes and cake balls are always a big hit with the kids. Those with dietary restrictions can

still enjoy the gluten-free french macaroons or almond horns, flourless chocolate cake, paleo cookies, gluten-free bread pudding, and freshly baked bread. Many other options are not listed here, and special orders are encouraged.

Peggy says, “If you have a favorite recipe, we’ll make it for you. Bring us your grandma’s recipe.” Custom orders for wedding or birthday cakes and cupcakes are welcome. In See SUGAR SHACK, page 18

Fifty-one years ago, he began by trading in women’s high-fashion shoes - mainly high heels. “For me, selling European comfort shoes was like putting an Italian chef in a Chinese kitchen,” Larry recalls. “I had to learn European sizes, new brands and styles—pretty much reinvent my business.” “The biggest part of my clientele now is Baby Boomers who’ve been through the high heel era, and are just tired of their feet hurting,” he smiles in all seriousness. In Style Accessories has been carving its niche for 13 years in a cozy location just east of the Square on the Old Kyle Road. For men, In Style carries an amazing selection of fine resort shirts. Larry left the Rio Grande Valley in the late 1990s and tried opening a Brighton Concept store at an upscale mall in Asheville, NC, but found North Carolinian shoppers a very different breed than the friendly Texans he was accustomed to. “Opening the Brighton store was the best idea I ever had – in the wrong place,” he wryly admits. In 2000, Larry returned to Texas and began searching for the best location for a small shoe store. He fell in love with Wimberley and decided to give it a try. In Style Accessories still had its “Grand Opening” sign hang-

ing in the doorway when the September 11, 2001 tragedy struck and the next few years weren’t easy, he remembers. “But I stuck it out.” Business grew slowly at first, and then “it started taking off by leaps and bounds. I would set a goal for the year, and sales would be double or triple that.” Now with a firm foothold and a loyal following, In Style Accessories continues to be a survival success story in the unique environment of the Wimberley shopping market. olks come to Wimberley for many reasons – the river, the native beauty, the laid-back, small town atmosphere and … gourmet foods? Yep, today’s savvy visitors not only plan on soaking up a little local scenery, unwinding a bit and just letting the Hill Country work its relaxing magic but, while in Wimberley, they also figure on stocking up on a variety of “impossible-to-find” delicacies that even the big city stores haven’t discovered yet. If this sounds a little farfetched, then you’ve never been to Valerie and Jackie Greene’s very unique Cackleberry Mercantile—an emporium of eclectic edibles (and more) that promise to please even the most discriminating palette! Located only one short block off the square right on Ranch Road 12, this delightful culinary curiosity, whose joyful exterior sports an old truck and lots of fun yard art, was the brain child of the Greenes who came to Wimberley in 2007 from West Texas. Both were semi-retired at the time but still desired some economic activity. What to do? With Valerie’s innate talent for cuisine creativity coupled with Jackie’s natural salesmanship, preparing and selling diverse and unique packaged gourmet food items seemed like the way to go and, go they did. Initially offering a limited mix of

Since then, thanks to a healthy and growing demand, its ever-expanding inventory has blossomed to include countless additional comestibles. Some are created exclusively by Valerie and some discovered during one of the Greene’s annual treks to the Dallas Market where the tireless pair is always seeking complimentary offerings to its existing lines. of her time—experimenting, tasting, developing and reworking old and new recipes. Some of their more popular house brand items include their delicious pecan oil, a variety of gourmet balsamic vinegars, multi-use avocado oil, spicy homeroasted nuts and tart mercantile-prepared pickles. But there’s so much more. Savory apple butters, tangy margarita mixes, candied jalapenos, stuffed olives, cream cheese mixes, even a remarkable bacon vinaigrette salad dressing represent some of Cackleberry Mercantile’s additional offerings from other top-shelf specialty (usually Texan) vendors.

Couple all of the wonderful products available with the proprietors’ sharing expertise in their use and function and shopping at the Cackleberry Mercantile truly can be a fulfilling and worthwhile event. As Valerie and Jackie smilingly state, “We like good people and we like good food. Are we in the right business or what?” Their constantly increasing customer list (mostly repeat shoppers) says definitely! FYI • Cackleberry Mercantile is at 13500 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. Valerie Greene holds a whimsical piece of yard art. At her shop, Cackleberry Mercantile on Ranch Road 12, you’ll find gourmet foods, kitchen items, artwork, locally-made jewelry and much more. Photo by Ernie Altgelt. At the Market, the Cackleberry Mercantile has repeatedly been recognized for its products, winning multiple awards. As Valerie relates, “After three years, we know what we’re looking for and that’s best defined as the unusual, not the standard. Beyond that, it could include anything—appetizing, that is.” After experiencing the playful décor found outside, visitors, visually and aromatically, won’t be disappointed with the mercantile’s equally welcoming interior. Once inside, shoppers’ senses are heightened by the beautiful displays of bountiful bottles, jars, tins, cartons and other bright and inviting packaging all beckoning with their victual enticements. A central “tasting” bar is always well provisioned inviting browsers to sample

before purchasing. Jackie maintains that “This is the most popular area in the store. Well, at least it’s my favorite spot!” Beyond the foods however, innumerable clever and colorful kitchen items, decorative artwork, body soaps, even locallyproduced jewelry all stimulate the urge to purchase as well. With so much offered, it’s impossible to list everything that Cackleberry Mercantile sells. A short list would have to include some of the many items the Greene’s promote under their well-received house label, “Wimberley Valley Gourmet.” Many of these products were conceived and created behind the store itself in the mercantile’s fully functioning commercial kitchen where Valerie spends a lot

verlooking a scenic valley a few short miles south of Wimberley are 14 “blessed” acres reworked, rehabilitated and, most importantly, repurposed by one very amazing, focused and motivated family. who, just like this special property, had also previously undergone substantial, (life-altering) transformations. Christened the Freedom14 Camp, today this lovingly developed “oasis of rebirth” plays host to diverse groups from across the country, all seeking a venue where the peace and tranquility found in the “natural” surroundings

coupled by a supportive and effective ministry can together provide an enriching environment. Here, individuals constructively reorient, not only internally, but spiritually as well. The healing results and positive outcomes can be profound. Owned and developed by former Austin urbanites Michael Hogan, his wife, Tawnya, and their three children, the acquisition of this acreage came to represent their “new beginning” from a demanding secular past that, while rich in financial security, hindered the deep personal relationship with their Lord this devout fivesome not only desired, but emotionally needed. Guided through prayer before quitting his successful corporate job in 2010, Michael (with Tawnya’s unwavering support) embarked on a search for a new home and, a new start. Initially not sure just what he was “looking for” or, where it would be, after eventually visiting the abandoned Wimberley property just once, he immediately “knew that this was it” but not exactly, why – at least not yet! When he brought the family to see it, even though the one structure on it was unlivable and clutter abounded, they wholeheartedly agreed with his decision. A deal was quickly struck with the owners. With the help of many wonderful volunteers and friends, the “house” was quickly refurbished and the eager family moved in but now… what was next? With no discernible income and bills to pay, Michael and family had to find a “purpose.” See FREEDOM14 CAMP, page 21

The Hogan family at their Freedom14 Camp property. LEFT TO RIGHT Reagan, Michael, Lynnsey, Katelyn and Tawnya. Photo by Ernie Altgelt. The answer was provided while Michael attended a “men’s camp” devoted to physical, emotional and spiritual growth. After that session, the Hogan’s 14 acres now “had a calling.” Determined to establish a permanent setting where similar, multi-day events could be held, Michael and family undertook an intense campaign of development seeking support in any and all forms—financial donations, voluntary labor, equipment and furniture, and more. By 2014, Freedom14 Camp (designated a 501(c)(3) non-profit) opened, sporting 10 comfortable cabins (currently capable of housing up to 56, with more room on the way), a large meeting center with audio/visual capabilities, a commercial kitchen, horse stables, a skeet range and many other indoor and outdoor amenities. The first event hosted was a men’s only “Wild at Heart Boot Camp” established by respected author, John Eldridge. At this inaugural retreat, attendees were challenged with a number of activities, all designed to encourage personal reflection, camaraderie and

spirituality. It was a huge success and, as a result, future “Eldridge camps” are scheduled. Since then, many other groups, organizations and churches have utilized the property. Participants have included married couples, teens, even entire families. At some of these bookings the Hogans only provided the room accommodations and meals. At others, Freedom14 Camp prepared and orchestrated the entire itinerary including “ministering sessions,” on-site activities and even scheduled “away trips” to area attractions. Whatever the requirements, Michael and Tawnya have become expert at “meeting the needs” of those visiting Freedom14 Camp. As they relate, “We were searching for a new direction in our lives. Jesus not only provided for us but gave us the tool (Freedom14 Camp) to assist others as well. We are truly blessed.” FYI • Freedom14 Camp is only available for group bookings. The boot design sponsored by Wimberley Cafe is a picnic basket with food that will be installed on the roof. The giant boots were revealed to the public at the Wimberley Community Center Saturday, September 13 — “the only time all the boots will be together in one place,” says Shelley. Guests also enjoyed a display of boots painted by Wimberley school children — real leather boots donated by The Wild West Store — and a documentary about

Wine, tapas, more at The Mercantile

B

By Laurel Robertson

rought to you by the same people who named a brew pub “The Barbershop,” comes Dripping Springs’ new wine and tapas bar, The Mercantile. What owners John McIntosh and Dave Niemeyer may lack in naming exactitude, they more than make up for in creating atmosphere and cuisine. Their newest venture has a distinct style and menu very different from its sibling business just two doors down on Mercer Street. The focus of The Mercantile is wine

Dripping Springs

and food, with an emphasis on national and global selections, says John. “We wanted to fill in the wine bar gap after Dudleys Wine Bar closed,” he says. The addition of tapas (small snacks or appetizers, well-known in Spanish bars) to the business plan came after that. “There are so few places in Dripping that serve late,” he observes. “And I’m a small plate eater. I like to try small amounts of different things, and not be married to a huge serving of a single $25 entree.” See MERCANTILE, page 31

Dripping Springs MERCANTILE, from page 30 The interior of the limestone building has been totally remodeled to make room for a full commercial kitchen where chef Chris Hoffman (of The Goodnight Diner and, most recently, Blair House in Wimberley) cooks up the price-friendly small wonders. These delights feature ingredients such as shiitake chicken liver pate with fig port marmalade and crostini; dolmas

stuffed with bulgar, apricots and mint w/ tahini aioli; red wine braised beef short ribs with rosemary polenta and arugula pesto; and shallot croustade with house smoked bacon jam, sunny-side-up quail egg and micro greens. The menu changes seasonally, and locally sourced ingredients figure prominently in it, as do Chris’ own customsmoked bacon and sausage (from a

His wife, Jana Muniz, prepares specialty desserts worthy of the main dishes. Patrons of the Barbershop also benefit from the new full kitchen at The Mercantile: delights such as pulled pork sandwiches, Philly cheese steak, and BLTs are prepared in The Mercantile kitchen and wheeled over to the neighboring business in a stainless steel food cart, with steam

compartments to keep the food hot and fresh. While the menu for the two businesses is distinct, chef Chris’ commitment to excellent taste carries over to the cart cuisine. Chris and Jana’s bright jars of pickled quail eggs, green beans, watermelon rinds and other pickled delights line the walls of The Mercantile and can be purchased. A long granite bar runs almost the length of the main room, with long tables and booths on the opposite side of the open floor plan. Multi-colored cedar planks cover the walls and earth-toned tiles pave the floor. Etched glass and eclectic art work add to the calm interior. Most of the decor features reused/refurbished materials, says The Mercantile’s new manager, Jolene Stietz. After years working very late hours managing bars in Austin, Houston and Key West, Jolene says she’s thrilled with the earlier hours The Mercantile offers in fact, she recently moved to Dripping Springs to make her commute even easier. Her staff of four servers are fully trained in wine lore and have the knowledge to pair wines with the tapas, she assures. Regular patrons of the Barbershop Bar may recognize a familiar face in the back of the kitchen. John’s son, Fischer, is serving as chief dishwasher and cook’s helper. The Mercantile is open Wednesday through Sunday. Happy hour begins at 4 pm, with $1 off featured wines. Four craft beers are always on tap and tapas are available until closing, around 11 pm. Back and front patio areas will be opened next year, with occasional live music on the back patio. The Mercantile will also serve as one of the venues for the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, this October 17 and 18. FYI • The Mercantile is located at 211 West Mercer Street in Dripping Springs. Hours are Wednesday - Sunday, 4 pm to 11 pm. For more information, see their Facebook page or call 512-858-0884.
