EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens
Enriching community and lives of children
T
By Colleen Brooks
he EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens was created in 1998 to “celebrate the life of Emily Ann Rolling.” The daughter of Ann and Norm Rolling, Emily was an actress and a costume designer who loved her work and the importance of theater at Wimberley High School. In 1996, just a few days before Christmas, she was killed in an automobile accident. Her parents, feeling blessed with the outpouring of love from the community following her sudden death, wanted to give something back, and they established the EmilyAnn Theatre to create a permanent home for the Shakespeare Under the Stars program their daughter was so passionate about. Ann and Norm’s mission soon became “to reinvest in the dignity of the human spirit,” a goal which continues to be at the core of everything that happens at EmilyAnn. Over the years, the EmilyAnn has evolved into a place that offers nature, growth and learning for all ages. Children as young as 5 (and up to 11) years of age who are interested in acting can participate in “Shakesperience” two-week day camps, each with a different theme and concluding with a performance. Every fall, the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens hosts drama classes for children ages 5 years through high school. These classes begin each September and run for 10 weeks, broken out by age groups. Beginning classes are offered for kids ages 5-7, intermediate for ages 7-9, advanced for children ages 10-12, and High School Drama for teens ages 13-18 years. These classes meet weekly, culminating with a final performance. Private acting classes for anyone wanting to receive one-on-one instruction are also available. Perhaps the EmilyAnn Theatre’s most popular offer-
ing, Shakespeare Under the Stars is open to children ages 12 years to high school. Shakespeare Under the Stars is a six-week program that gives young drama students an opportunity to study and perform one of Shakespeare’s plays and to participate in the production aspects of their choosing. Offered are acting, costume creation, set construction and design, and lighting. Attendees are participate in workshops taught by working professionals. The series ends with nine full-length play performances. The EmilyAnn also produces children’s shows, and welcomes school field trips to the grounds. In addition, the PLAYwrights Program for students in the second to fifth grades brings Artistic Director, Bridget Farias Gates, into the school classrooms to teach a brief workshop about play writing. Laura Tanner, Development Director explains, “Students write plays independently or in groups and submit them back to the EmilyAnn. A panel of actors selects 10 plays to be performed at the EmilyAnn. We have a performance night when the winning playwrights and their families are invited to see the plays performed by professional actors.” She smiles, “It’s a ton of fun and the program is offered to schools at no cost.” Bridget describes how fulfilling it is to work with these young aspiring drama students, “To see these students open themselves, becoming so much more aware of the world around them, how it affects them, and just becoming so much more self aware, as well...it’s my very favorite thing about teaching children and young adults.” She smiles and adds, “They are so eager and hungry for new knowledge. It’s really so beautiful, and I feel so blessed to get to be there to assist in this knowledge See EMILYANN, page 6

of the Annanette Harper Children’s Memorial Plaza at the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens. The flagpole memorial area has been improved with a larger plaza area and new gardens and benches. “The flagpole originally honored Emily’s class, the Class of 1998. Tiles with the name of each member of the class make up the star points at the base of the flagpole. In time, it became clear that the top of the hill was the perfect place to remember lives lost,” Ann, Executive Director, explains. “A tile with Emily’s name was added to the circle above her classmates along with the names of others whose lives had been lost. Since that time, many names have been added and the flagpole has become a gathering area for families.” During the opening ceremony of the Butterfly Festival each year, a butterfly is released for each name represented. The 2015 production series continues with the fall musical of “Godspell” September 4 - October 4 in the indoor Bur-
dine Johnson Studio Theatre. “To Kill a Mockingbird” will follow from October 30 - November 22. The children’s theater season continues with “Snow White & Rose Red” September 12 - October 4, and “A Christmas Carol” November 28 - December 20, also in the indoor theater. Enjoy the 18th Annual Trail of Lights at the EmilyAnn November 28 - December 29, and 2016 productions will begin with “Narnia: The Musical” January 29 February 21, and “Aladdin” February 27 - March 20. The public is welcome daily to EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens’ 12 acres. Bring the children out to walk their whimsical grounds, see the life-sized chess board and castle, and play in the musical garden. or almost 25 years, Susanna’s Kitchen Coffeehouse Concert Series has been bringing top notch musical entertainment to Wimberley. “This concert series was born when organizers were looking for a way to raise funds for worthwhile community projects, plus bring top quality live music to Wimberley,” explains Sharon Reece, director. One of these organizers was local and music agent, Gigi Benno. “So this concert series was a natural. Gigi still drops in to see her work in full bloom,” Sharon smiles. Throughout the years well known musicians — including Ruthie Foster and Trout Fishing in America — have graced the stage and even become regulars. Susanna’s Kitchen continues to bring in popular musical artists like Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hal Ketchum, Kevin Welch, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis. Sharon says, “We have people call us all the time about performing, but we pretty much book people with national standing or Austin A-listers.” Susanna’s Kitchen may pack a crowd, but there is always room for everyone. The intimate venue makes for a special listening experience.“Singers love coming to perform. This is a smoke and alcohol free venue, and everyone is totally focused on the music. Performers always get standing ovations. That is a rare audi-

SUSANNA’S KITCHEN, from page 8 audience. Attendance usually averages around 100 guests a show. “We have the biggest audiences these days for Ray Wylie Hubbard. He draws about 220 people,” Sharon explains. “We set up speakers in the lobby and in a side room with glass walls. The energy in the room for Ray and for Hal Ketchum is great, as it is for most shows.” In the early days of Susanna’s Kitchen Coffeehouse Concert Series, performances were held nine months of the year during the non-summer months. Without social media, there was less publicity, so they had smaller crowds. Nowadays, a team of organizers work on the monthly event. Sharon explains, “Today, a group of 12-15 dedicated volunteers manage Susanna’s Kitchen like a well oiled machine. Positions include a kitchen manager and crew, logistics folks, publicity volunteers, sound mixer, greeters and door crew, etc.” The name “Susanna’s Kitchen comes from Methodist Church Founder, John Wesley’s wife, Susanna, who loved to cook and provide meals for all the church happenings. “So in the Methodist tradition, a lot of food related activities have Susanna’s name attached,” Sharon smiles. You’ll find coffee, soft drinks, pizza, tamales, and pie from the Wimberley Pie Company available for purchase at every Susanna’s Kitchen performance. Upcoming shows include Butch Hancock, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis, and the Welch Family. The 2016 lineup includes Slaid Cleaves, Shinyribs and the Austin Lounge Lizards. Performances the third Thursday of each month at the Wimberley United Methodist Church. Tickets are available at the door and range from $15 to $25, depending on the musician. Students under 18 get in for just $5. Performances begin at 7:30 pm, but doors open at 7 pm so guests can enjoy dinner and fellowship before the show. ilagro’s Hill Country Tex Mex is a perfect place to host your next reunion, gathering, laid back evening with friends, or just enjoy a simple date night. Located at “the junction” where Farm Market 32 meets Ranch Road 12, the restaurant offers a beautiful front deck where you can enjoy the Hill Country view, in addition to indoor dining to accommodate groups large or small. Owners Scott and Mary Sprague opened Milagro’s in 2009 after moving
to Wimberley from Dallas. Both grew up in a small town and wanted to replicate that environment for their children. With family in the area, they decided to make Wimberley their home. The couple took a leap of faith and decided to utilize their combined experience of more than 35 years in the restaurant business and open up their very own restaurant. Scott explains, “With the experience we had, we felt confident we could make it work and most of all, we understood the commitment that would be involved.”

Tex Mex food with a Hill Country Twist!!!
Milagro’s Hill Country Tex Mex offers traditional Tex-Mex cuisine with a Hill Country twist, found in dishes like Blue Cheese Nachos topped with caramelized onions and fajita beef, and Maria’s Especial fried grit cakes topped with queso, andouille sausage and fresh pico de gallo. The menu is diverse and also offers American dishes, including the well-loved burgers made with 100 percent certified Angus beef and served on a sweet sourdough bun. The burgers have become so popular plans are to expand that section of the menu. Milagro’s also offers an array of salads and soups. You can order traditional dishes like a tortilla-broth based soup with shredded chicken and Mexican spices topped with avocado and crispy tortilla strips, in addition to a taco salad or a chicken fajita salad. Or, you can try signature items such as the popular Mexican Summer Soup— a cheese based soup served with smoked poblano peppers, roasted corn, onions, and marinated chicken. Seafood lovers delight in Milagro’s Seafood Gumbo which includes shrimp, crab, tilapia and andouille sausage served over rice. And Maria’s arugula salad— with toasted pecans, red onions, feta cheese and topped with a homemade blackberryhabanero vinaigrette—is certainly not to be overlooked. This Milagro’s original can also be topped with chicken for even more

quila lime sauce. Scott affirms, “Everything from Milagro’s is made from scratch, nothing is processed, everything is made in-house.” In addition to the standard bar offerings of margaritas, beer, wine and sangria, they also offer four signature cocktails. Ask about their Tequila Mockingbird Margarita, Strawberry-Basil Margarita, Mexican Martini and a habanero infused Fire and Ice, which is served fro-
zen or on the rocks. Milagro’s private banquet room seats up to 40 comfortably and provides a great view. Another outside deck—decorated with beautiful white lights at night— can accommodate up to 100. Rehearsal dinners, class reunions and family reunions are often hosted this beautiful space. There is also an area for live music, and the Milagro’s staff is happy to create a custom menu to suit any need. On a more quiet evening, this deck provides the perfectly enchanting date night atmosphere with an enchanting view. Milagro’s also offers catering. They frequently work with local ranches and can cater to any location. Mary had more than 15 years of catering experience working in the “big city” before she and Scott created Milagro’s, which makes her perfect for this role!
Remarkably, the original kitchen staff is still intact after six years in the business. Scott says, “Consistency is everything in the food business. We’ve been very fortunate to maintain that consistency through our kitchen staff not turning over.” The menu they began with back in 2009 is the same being served today, and has only gotten better with time. This could be why Milagro’s was recently named fifth in a “Top Ten Tex Mex restaurants” listing by a recent online poll. This standing included the wide area of the Texas Hill Country, in addition to the Austin and San Antonio areas. Scott and Mary feel fulfilled with their choice to move to Wimberley. In addition to working closely with local ranches, Milagro’s also works closely with the Wimberley Independent School District, area churches and local businesses. “We understand that to be successful, you have to first earn the trust of the locals, and we feel like we have done that,” Mary smiles. “People see you at work everyday and want to support small businesses. We are just doing our bit in chasing that American Dream.” FYI • Milagro’s is located at 9595 Ranch Road 12, Suite 12 (at the Junction where Farm Market 32 meets Ranch Road 12.) The restaurant is open seven days a week, Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 9 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm. After the daylight savings time change in the fall, they’ll close an hour earlier until we spring forward again. t The Patio on the Square, owner David Rushford offers delicious bagels (with homemade plain or specialty cream cheese), breakfast and lunch bagel sandwiches, gourmet hot dogs and sausages, plus coffee and desserts like coffee cake, locally made gelato, sorbetto and more. The menu at the walk up eatery, though short, is truly sweet. The turkey, bacon and avocado bagel is the Patio’s number one selling sandwich, followed by the lox sandwich. Other offerings include a breakfast bagel, served with scrambled egg and cheese (bacon or sausage optional), a salami bagel and pastrami bagel. The best selling dog is the Chicago dog—loaded up with relish, tomato, pickle spear, mustard and celery salt on a poppy seed bun. It’s followed closely by the New York dog—garlic sausage, pastrami, sauerkraut and mustard on a hoagie—and the Tex—with chili, cheese, onions and mustard served on a hoagie bun. reekside Vintage is a time capsule for kitschy, mid-century modern furniture, art and decorative accessories, dinnerware, Little Golden children’s books, long-playing records, and numerous collectibles.
Owners Kristi and Mike Abild first zeroed in on pieces from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s when they needed something smaller than the usual contemporary pieces to furnish their 700 square foot, ’50s era cabin in Wimberley. “I like the clean lines and bright

colors,” Kristi says, “nearly everything was made in the United States and made to last.” Many people appreciate the durability and style of vintage items. College students, and anyone living in a smaller house, as well as ecologically aware (“green”) individuals, often prefer to buy vintage. It’s easy to smile at the cheerful chartreuse green, bold turquoise, yellow and orange hues and the whimsical designs of quirky collectibles like ashtrays, salt-andpepper shakers, canisters, and handbags. “People enjoy seeing things they recognize and remember,” Kristi says. For people of a certain age, the rooms at Creekside Vintage are portals to the past. A framed needlepoint owl or starburst wall clock stirs memories of their childhood or teenage years. A bejeweled purse crafted from a kit or a framed print of a waif with huge, sad eyes elicits spontaneous exclamations of “I remember that” and “Oh my – I (or my mom or my grandmother) had that hanging in the hall!” In one of the shop’s three rooms, an LP record of the greatest hits by The Grass Roots is spinning on a wobbly Pioneer turntable, the band sings “Sha La La – Live for Today” and suddenly it’s 1967 again. The store’s inventory is extensive and ever-changing with vases, figurines, glassware, Fiesta cups and plates, and Pyrex nesting bowls and casseroles in many colors and patterns stacked on tables. The store’s large selection of Pyrex is a good starting point for glass collectors, and includes Avocado Green, Green Daisy Print, and turquoise on white Amish Butterprint, featuring a farmer and wife surrounded by roosters and corn plants. In a store like this, every item – TV trays, ashtrays, a cookie jar imported from Japan – tells a story. Even something as seemingly mundane as a dinner plate may reflect some aspect of the dynamic and, for many in the USA, prosperous post-war years. Consumers were ready for something new and even long-established companies did their best to respond to the modern mood. For instance, the complete set of Franciscan Starburst dinnerware that is displayed in the front case at Creekside Vintage represents a major innovation by a company that originally produced roof tiles, sewer pipes and bricks made out of clay. In the 1930s they branched off into tableware with raised, hand-painted patterns and in 1941 the company introduced Desert Rose, one of their all-time best-selling designs. But the creation of the Starburst pattern in the mid-’50s was altogether different for Franciscan Ware, both in the improved technology resulting in more durable crack-resistant pottery and the smooth decal pattern and futuristic starry design likely inspired by the dawn of space exploration. Also, collectors of vintage ashtrays

will find unusual or even rare specimens to tempt them. The award-winning “Mad Men” series told many stories about the ubiquitous cigarette and the decade when many people, in movies and in real life, carried a cigarette in one hand and a cocktail in the other. Couples received crystal ashtrays for wedding gifts and accumulated a stash of souvenir ashtrays from vacations. Few houses were ashtray-free and the concept of second-hand smoke was knowledge yet-to-be-revealed in the future. Today ashtrays are discarded artifacts of that bygone era. Banished from most homes and even some bars, they’re still highly desirable as collectibles. “Most people who purchase them aren’t smokers,” Kristi says. But even if you don’t smoke, a retro glass or novelty ashtray makes an unexpected decoration or a convenient holder for coins or paper clips. Whether you are a collector, a sentimentalist looking for pieces of your past, or a practical shopper who simply strives to be eco-friendly, Creekside Vintage has something for you. This fun shop remains consistently true to its mid-century modern theme and it is unlike any other store in Wimberley. wner Mary Van Ostrand is the Queen Bee at her 2,500 square foot emporium, where swarms of weekend and holiday tourists buzzing around Wimberley Square go to find that special something they can’t find in a big box store. Themed areas – Texas Ranch, Kitchen, Garden, Antique and Vintage – guide shoppers through the collections, where they’ll discover Texas-sized totes and tapestries, specialty teas and scented candles, pot holders and Poo-Pourri, baby clothes
and blankets, salsas and jellies, rooster collectibles, and other gifts for everyone on their list. Mary has operated her business out of this building since 1998, although both the name of the store and the products she carries have changed with the times and realities of the marketplace. When the crafting craze was sweeping the country during the late ’80s and early ’90s, “I started painting and decorating small birdhouses,” Mary says, usually with a Victorian-styled English garden theme. She also sold antiques, having de-

She still has a few antiques at Queen Bee, like the matching pair of overstuffed shabby chic armchairs from the 1930’s with the original upholstery, that anchor the collections of newer items. But the wooden country crafts are gone and so is old Country Folks store name. “I had people tell me that they nearly didn’t come into the store because of the name!” “The changes had to be made because tastes changed,” Mary say. “Crafting was big earlier on but beginning in the mid1990s, and even more so by the year 2000, people didn’t want anything like that in their houses.” They wanted more elegant household accessories – large cylindrical candles in glass and wrought iron containers and sumptuous throws and pillows. Mary carefully chooses the store’s merchandise and she carries as many items made in Texas as possible. “I’m always looking for new Texas products,” she says. “More than 75 percent of our business comes from visitors who live outside the area, and they don’t want to take home items that are made overseas or in another state, they want souvenirs made in Texas.” Some of these Texas products are sauces and jellies from Fredericksburg, Tyler Candles, T-shirts from Austin, and handmade wooden magnets from San Antonio. Another best-selling item the store carries that is manufactured in Texas was invented by a home state gal named Suzy Batiz, who must have a wonderful sense of humor, judging from the website for Poo Pourri. ohn Zuberbueler has been doing carpentry work since the late 1970’s. Last year, as he was recovering from surgery, he reacquainted himself with this art, doing small jobs in his workshop creating cutting boards, building lamps, and other not-so-large objects. When he was asked to build a coffee table, he gladly took on the challenge. And as friends started seeing his unique creations on Facebook, John’s carpentry business quickly took on a life of its own. Soon, he had a list of orders to fill and his pieces became larger—desks, benches, bookshelves, even cash register stands. John’s creations are one-of-a-kind pieces you won’t see anywhere else — beautifully rustic, yet functional. A coffee table with gun storage underneath made from birch (raw slaves), cedar, and pine is one example. “I am trying to build more custom pieces, I don’t like to do ‘cookie cutter’ type furniture,” he explains. Most of the furniture John designs is “live edge,” crafted using the bark edge of the wood. Like many in the Wimberley community, he dealt firsthand with damage from the Memorial Day flood. “It is sad, the devastation... I know there was tree loss, my mother-in-law lost over 65 trees,” he says. John plans to use some of this wood sentimental to local residents in upcoming projects. He explains his plans for fallen

Boots, boots, and more boots, too many to count, are the centerpiece of the store. New and vintage brands— Old Gringo, Corral, Liberty Black, Rocketbuster, Manuel and Tres Outlaws— start as low as $140 for a pair of Corral Black Cross kickers and go up to more than $2,000 for a pair of Rocketbuster’s custom hand-tailored Virgin of the Guadalupe boots, truly a religious experience. With a selection this extensive and varied – short boots, tall boots, boots with fringe, silver studs, white stars, or blue roses – there’s no excuse for anyone to leave the store bootless. “I try to carry mostly items made in the United States, especially Texas brands,” Jacque says, pointing out some of the items – hats by Patricia Wolf, boots by Rocketbuster – that are manufactured in San Antonio, Sabinal, Mason, El Paso, Yoakum, Smithville and other towns all around the Lone Star State. Patricia Wolf, the queen of Western chic, is based in Smithville, Texas. Her style has evolved over the last 25 years into an expansive repertoire of Western, Native American, Vaquero, and contemporary looks. El Paso custom boot makers Rocketbuster and Tres Outlaws are among the hundreds of designs at Wall Street Western. Rocketbuster specializes in some of the most outlandish designs in the business, boasting celebrity customers like actors Mel Gibson and Billy Bob Thornton, talk show host Oprah Winfrey and direc-
tor Steven Spielberg. Sales representatives Lauren and Autumn describe the store’s vibe as “country chic with a rocker edge,” and enjoy shopping for special outfits and accessories at the store. Lauren favors the clothes from Free People, a brand Jacque says “not many people realize we have.” “My mom worked here and I began by helping out on weekends,” Autumn says, “to support my habit of shopping here! I like knowing I can always find something not everyone else has. I bought a McFadin purse for a good price, which was really exciting! And I found my outfit for the Super Bowl here.” (The McFadin sisters, Laurie and Stacy, grew up on a Texas ranch and continue to live and work in the Texas Hill Country. Over the years they’ve gained a celebrity following with the likes of Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, and Selena Gomez all sporting McFadin handbags.) “This store has great jewelry,” Autumn says, selecting a couple of necklaces by Linn & Laurel (of Mason, Texas) for a closer look. “I like how she takes ordinary items like leather, deer antlers, and semiprecious stones such as turquoise or jade, and combines them to create something very simple yet quite extraordinary.” FYI • Wall Street Western is located in the oldest commercial building in Wimberley, at 14012 Ranch Road 12. enese Washam was a software developer in New York City going through some changes in her life’s path when she decided to take a long, overdue vacation. As she was riding her bicycle around Key West, her intuition nudged her, “One of these days, you’ll own a 21-room inn.” Ten years later after a series of well-timed events, Denese was able to capture that
dream in the Texas Hill Country with the help of her friend, Taako Parker. Taking a look around her tranquil retreat recalling the path she took to get here she laughs, “Well, Room 21 is upstairs.” Denese and Taako just celebrated their 10th anniversary as owners of the Wimberley Inn. A tremendous amount of renovations and changes have been made since they took ownership 10 years ago. Denese’s husband, Dan, has created a

All rooms have also been upgraded and the building that formerly housed the office has been beautifully restored. Wimberley Inn offers 21 rooms ranging in price from $89 to $149 on weekdays, and $129 to $199 on weekends. The main building hosts an elegant dining room where a mostly organic, continental breakfast is served on weekends and holidays. This space is also available for meetings, small parties or events, and is accompanied by a lovely deck that overlooks the wooded hillside. The beautifully restored building next door also provides additional indoor and outdoor space, and is also a great place to host retreats, intimate parties, or meetings. Denese explains, “We’ve had various events bridging both buildings where food is catered and served in the main building which houses the dining room, and music and dancing take place in the nearby building.” This space comfortably accommodates about 18-40 guests. Guest rooms are spread out among four separate buildings on the woodland retreat. Each offers cable television, ceiling fans, individual climate control, a phone, coffee maker, clock radio, and a front porch, in addition to recently upgraded memory foam mattresses. His work on the grounds has created a beautiful, natural escape. Guests aren’t the only ones who enjoy it... as do the deer, birds and hummingbirds. A fox and her kit frequent the grounds, in addition to the armadillos and their young that can be seen at night. When in bloom, the first thing to greet you at the Wimberley Inn will be the abundant sage trees. Denese smiles, “Our focus for our guests is different from the B&Bs. We are

A dedicated group of law enforcement working for Wimberley citizens, the Hays County Constable Precinct 3 is of made up of Deputy Constables, non-paid reserves, and an invaluable office staff. Together, this team works with utmost efficiency as it watches over the community to ensure residents and visitors are safe. Deputy Constables handle all the standard responsibilities of police officers—including writing tickets, making arrests, handling criminal warrants, and conducting investigations. They also provide traffic control and security for the precinct during community events, accidents and fires. “Since there is not

Constables assist with missing person and 9-1-1 calls, and provide backup to other law enforcement as needed. In addition they also serve as Peace Officers, and have added responsibilities of civil law. More technical than criminal law, civil law requires specialized schooling. These civil duties generate revenues for the county, which helps reduce tax dollars. Deputy Constable Helm explains, “The civil fees that people pay go into the general fund; the arrest warrant fees that we collect also go into the general fund. Unlike other law enforcement offices we are self-supportive. We generate money for the county on these fees, the county supplies us a budget every year, and we pretty much make the money back.” Some civil responsibilities include civil process in Precinct 3 and throughout the county, including Comal and Blanco. Constables also act as bailiffs for the Hays County Justice of the Peace court for Judge Andrew Cable. These deputies also protect our community by lending a hand to citizens. In addition to their duties and patrols, they can usually assist if someone needs an escort or has locked their keys in their car. When residents take cover in inclement weather, deputies are out checking low water crossings to ensure they remain passable. They also perform bike patrols of community parks and trails. Deputy Constable Ray Helm sums it up, “We are just the people’s peace officer” When Wimberley was hit with what many have termed a “100-year flood” over the Memorial Day weekend, deputy constables were instrumental in the first response. The night of May 23, as torrential rains came down, deputies were out monitoring the low water crossings and bridges, watching as the Blanco River threatened and then rapidly took over the Ranch Road 12 bridge. In constant contact with neighboring towns, other law enforcement, and the Wimberley Fire Department, deputies went door-to-door to get nearby residents and tourists to safety. They also assisted the Wimberley Fire Department with boat See DEPUTY CONSTABLES, page 23

Deputies responded to numerous calls for help from citizens who were trapped in their attics and gave out lifesaving advice to many others—some of whom called the deputies’ personal cell phones or asked for help through social media — since other forms of communication were down. They also directed people who came to help alongside first responders, so everyone could do so safely. Like every other emergency responder involved in the flood, they did not stop to rest for days, until things were a more “organized” form of chaotic. Their actions saved the lives of many Wimberley residents, and tourists who had just arrived for the Memorial Day weekend. In addition, these Deputy Constables also had the keys to the Wimberley High School gym and recognized the need to immediately open its doors so all flood victims would have a safe place to take refuge from the storm. This gym became a critical location in the days and weeks, even months, that followed. Now deputies have implemented a program to help keep kids safe with the Hays County School Zone Safety Camera Program. The specially-equipped vehicle arrived in July 2015 with a high definition camera on the front and back to capture images and video of vehicles exceeding the speed limit in school zones. Deputy Constable Ray Helm explains, “There’s always a problem with speeding in school zones. The thing is, we can’t be there 24-7.” Citations will be issued to anyone going over 6 mph in school zones during drop-off and pick-up times, and to drivers traveling 11 miles over the posted speed limit during the school day or during school events. Each violation will carry a fine of $150. Since this is a civil citation, no points will be added to the offender’s driving records. Deputy Constable Travis Brown says, “You can’t put a price on our children’s life or safety. If this program saves one child, it’s done it’s job.” Deputy Constable Helm nods in agreement, “The kids we will protect at all costs.”
The Wimberley Community is fortunate to have this exemplary branch of law enforcement protecting its citizens. You can assist them by abiding laws and speed limits, stopping for pedestrians in our crosswalks, and respecting the flow of traffic during traffic diversions. Also, never move or bypass a low water crossing or construction barrier. Doing so puts many lives at risk and carries hefty fines with the possibility of jail time. You can also keep yourself and others in the community safe by adhering to responsible cell phone use while driving, especially in school zones. FYI • Hays County Constable Precinct 3 is located at 14306 Ranch Road 12, Suite 11. Office hours are 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. For more information, call 512-847-5532. imberley’s flood recovery has come a long way since the Memorial Day rains devastated areas along its Blanco River. The response of residents and volunteers who came together to initiate recovery was nothing short of astounding. Children and adults immediately went to work shoveling out homes, removing debris, managing downed trees and locating salvageable belongings, while others worked off-site to organize massive donations, handle food prep, and circulate changing needs and updates on social media. Wimberley business owners also provided tremendous support by generously providing services and goods completely free of charge. ACE Hardware became the town command center and continued to act in this capacity for several weeks. Wimberley’s restaurants and chefs provided hot meals for victims and volunteers free of charge during this time. Small speciality businesses also assisted by donating materials and services beneficial to recovery. Many friendships were forged as people worked together as a team to support flood survivors. As the entire nation watched the nightly coverage, Wimberley displayed a shining example of the power of community. We’ve come so far, but there is still work to be done. Many families remain
displaced as they continue the work required to make their homes habitable. The summer months— which generously brought volunteers and students on summer break— have ended, and there are now challenges supplying manpower to assist these homeowners in rebuilding their lives. Traci Maxwell, Regional Volunteer Coordinator with the new Blanco River Regional Recovery Team explains, “As the rest of the world has gone back to their normal lives, our survivors are still stuck in limbo because without volunteers, normal is not attainable.” The newly formed Blanco River Regional Recovery Team (BR3T) focuses on the long-term recovery of the Blanco, Hays, Caldwell and Guadalupe Counties which includes the towns of Blanco, Hays, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Martindale, San Marcos, Kyle, and Wimberley. Traci shares, “My biggest challenge is getting the numbers of volunteers up across the region. The initial volunteer numbers were amazing but as the weeks passed, volunteers have disappeared; many days we have none and a big weekend now is only 20-30 people vs 200-300.” You don’t have to have a large amount of time to volunteer, even a few hours can make an impact to a struggling homeowner. Building material donations are also in short supply. Please contact the See FLOOD RELIEF, page 25

Linda Germain has been a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty for the past 11 years, since starting her Real Estat career in 2004. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Linda attended San Francisco State College and then spent more than 25 years in retail management for major retailers. Outstanding customer service has always been a high priority in Linda’s retail career and remains her number one priority in working with her Real Estate clients. She is a member of the National and Texas Association of Realtors, as well as the Austin and Central Texas Board of Realtors. Linda and her husband, Gene, moved to Wimberley more than 11 years ago and both are active, involved members of the Wimberley Community. Barbara is a Broker Associate and Team Leader for Hills of Texas Sky Realty. Previously Sponsoring Broker and Co-Owner of Hills of Texas Realty, Barbara made the decision in August 2015 to merge her company with Sky Realty, an independent, real estate firm based out of Austin. “The merge has freed up my time to take on new clients and provide a higher level of service. I am proud of the excellent team I’ve built at Hills of Texas. The merge with Sky Realty has given our agents the marketing and branding tools to excel far above what any other Real Estate firm can offer. It’s not about the Broker/Owner of the company. It’s about each individual agent and how their knowledge and experience will benefit their clients and the company as a whole,” she says. Barbara moved to Wimberley in 1997 when she became a full time Realtor® and later received her Broker’s license. She is a local market expert, top producer, and a Texas Monthly Magazine Five Star Real Estate agent. Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas, Barbara lives in Wimberley with her husband, Gaylan, and son, Austin. She is a member of the Austin MLS, Central Texas MLS and serves on the Public Relations Committee for the Four Rivers Association of Realtors®. Barbara supports several non-profit organizations and is Treasurer for the local Hochheim Prairie Insurance Board that provides scholarships to graduating seniors. As she truly believes and gladly shares, “I feel blessed to live in the Texas Hill Country, and to have the opportunity to serve and support my community.”

he bluebonnets were blooming when Rev. Ellen Debenport came to join Unity of Wimberley in 2009. She had spent the previous year writing her first book, “The Five Principles: A Guide to Practical Spirituality,” and before that served as senior minister of the 1,000-member Unity Church of Dallas. Here, she found a joyous and energetic spiritual community on 43 acres of beautiful Hill Country property and has never looked back. Unity of Wimberley welcomes all people. The 11 am Sunday service averages about 100, plus the children – babies to teenagers – in the youth programs. The church has a pool that offers memberships each summer, hiking trails and a labyrinth. But most of all, it has a spirit of inclusivity and camaraderie, supporting each other in spiritual growth. In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

“rides alongside” their original winery and tasting room — and as an historic reference to the ’20s and the drink made famous in that decade. While the original Tasting Room out at Bell Springs Winery still offers leisurely afternoon wine-sipping overlooking pastoral country scenes, Sidecar has a more uptown feel. Its close proximity to Dripping Springs’ growing number of restaurants and entertainment venues makes it convenient for diners to drop in for a glass of wine before dinner or for a nightcap afterwards. Sidecar also offers an expanded drink menu, including wine cocktails and Bell Springs Cider, with Happy Hour specials Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 6 pm. Like the original Bell Springs Tasting Room, Sidecar serves “nibbles” to accompany the wine — a selection of meat and cheese plates, along with some extraordinary sweets. And guests can enjoy live piano music Fridays and Saturdays. Nate says he tried to reuse as much of the original house material as possible during the renovation. “We had new batten boards specially milled to match the originals, and even turned the old wooden siding into into rustic drink tables,” he points out. Angie brought her designer’s eye to the interior, using historically-accurate pressed tin ceiling panels, stained wood wainscoting, antique style wallpaper and a 30’ long bar that runs the length of the main room. The lighting fixtures, wall trim and furniture all reflect the period theme. Outside, covered front and back porches offer a choice of sun or shade at any time of day or year. Washer pits and an outdoor stage are surrounded by bright landscaping.
A new parking lot in the rear supplies ample off-street parking for both Sidecar and its next-door-neighbor, Pink West Salon. Nate is still hatching ideas for what to do with the original smokehouse and outhouse on the property, but it will be something fun, he assures us. “This is the prototypical new busiSee SIDECAR, page 34

ness for Dripping Springs,” Nate says. “We worked closely with the City to comply with historic, architectural, lighting and color ordinances. It was a pleasant mutual partnership.” He says he’s excited about the next five years in Dripping Springs, as more restaurants and shops bring people to town to spend the day. Nate and Angie are firmly planted here, they say, with their two young children planning to attend Dripping Springs schools and call this their hometown. Bell Springs Winery sources grapes from all over the world (including Texas) to produce the current reserve of five red, five white and one rose wines. Their wines can be purchased at both of the tasting rooms, through the Bell Springs Winery web site and as a member of their Wine Club.
