erated 12,245 square foot center opened for business – and, it’s been going gang busters ever since. Today (or any day for that matter), a visit to the center pays ample testament to its community value. One entire section caters to area seniors where the click of dominoes and other diversions compete with garrulous conversation on a daily basis. Attractive art works adorn the entry foyer provided by the local art league. In either of the two smaller meeting rooms it’s not uncommon to see business presentations and conferences underway utilizing the latest in communication technologies. Other areas might be hosting yoga classes, dance lessons or children’s educational camps. In the impressive 4,000-squarefoot Johnson Hall, elegantly decorated tables and chairs can quickly transform this spacious room into a formal wedding or quinceanera venue second to none. A complete on-site commercial kitchen stands ready as well. The main takeaway when “discovering” all this incredible community asset has to offer is, according to the center’s able director Tracy Calamari, “Its versatility.” As she further explains, “This building was intended to be used by everyone and, for almost anything. In that regard, I know it’s been a huge success.” A list of the groups and organiza-

Wimberley Arts

Stop in, find your favorite at The Art Gallery

he Art Gallery on the Wimberley Square showcases original art from renowned American and European painters, whose works are exhibited throughout the United States and collected by fine art connoisseurs around the world. Still, one doesn’t have to be a fine art connoisseur to appreciate this collection, and fine art is always a good investment, regardless of the economic climate. Most of the paintings are categorized as landscapes, but within this genre there is tremendous variety: the photo-realistic style of German-born, classically trained

Heinz Stoecker; Italian artist Simonetti’s marine paintings of coastal villages and scenes of the canals in Venice; A. Kelly Pruitt’s oil paintings of traditional Western scenes like “Deer at Waterhole.” Director Terry Grisham manages the gallery. Terry excels at educating tourists and locals alike about the artists, from biographical details to their different styles, techniques, and subject matter, as well as the importance of properly framing and lighting the paintings. Owner Wanda King began collecting fine art nearly two decades ago with paintings she purchased during her

overseas travels. She expanded on that to include some of the best artists working in the Southwest and the Texas Hill Country today. Some of these painters reveal influences from both Europe and the United States, which explains why native Austrian painter Tibor Tasnadi features scenes like “Paris in Winter” and “Moulin Rouge” in his repertoire that also includes “Bluebonnet “Serenity” by Ben Carter. Valley,” “Texas Landscape,” and “California Coast.” Manuel Garza, one of the top-selling artists, paints with such meticulous detail that even the tiniest details stand out, from the individual flower petals in “Wildflowers/Egret,” to the bird feathers and barbed wire in “Bobwhites.” Look for the tiny trademark redbird that Manuel puts in every picture. San Antonio resident Ben Carter paints in oils, watercolor, pastels and even though his work often incorporates iconic western images such as Native Americans, horses, longhorn cattle, and cowboys, he will upset stereotypes by painting a gorgeous waterfowl or a Hill Country farm scene. Ben’s exhibit “Thundering Hooves, the History of the Horse in North America” traveled for five years throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, and Australia. George Kovach has been featured at the gallery since it opened more than 15 “Bluebonnets” by George Kovach. See ART GALLERY, page 9 Photo courtesy The Art Gallery.

years ago. George’s works have an emotional appeal that affects almost everyone and some of his images have been commissioned for calendars and greeting cards. He paints a lot of bluebonnets, but there is nothing boring about the large number of bluebonnet landscapes. Admirers often comment that, “it feels like you could just walk right into a George Kovach painting,” and so it does – in “Homeward Trails,” the winding dirt path beckons and the yucca plants amidst the field of blue bend in the wind just out of reach. Several paintings from the late A.D. Greer are still available to purchase from the Art Gallery. Widely praised for the “luminous quality” of his paintings, as well as his “skillful handling of light, color, and composition,”A.D. played the accordion

to keep his fingers limber. His painting, “Cattle Country,” was purchased by Lyndon B. Johnson and exhibited at the White House during his presidency. Visit the gallery soon to learn more about these and other artists whose works are available to experience and to purchase. The Art Gallery is an ideal place to relax and soak up some classicallyinspired European-style culture, tempered with the flying dust of the rugged Wild West and the familiar flora and fauna found in our home state. Honest food in cool, new space at Leaning Pear

I

By Allie Eissler

t’s been six-and-a-half years since Matthew and Rachel Buchanan first welcomed Wimberley foodies, families, and food-loving folks into the rustic, renovated Lowery House on River Road — and my, what a difference just a few years have made! At the end of August 2013, the Leaning Pear officially opened the doors to its beautiful, brand new building, located just a stone’s throw away from the old one, and on the same piece of property that has been in Rachel’s family for 40 years. Rachel and her husband, Matthew, are both native Texans — she hails from San Marcos, and he from Rockwall — and Texas A&M University graduates. The couple taught English in Perugia, Italy, for a year before relocating to New York for Matthew to attend classes at the Culi-

nary Institute of America. Upon returning to the Hill Country, Matthew and Rachel served as Executive Chef and Assistant Innkeeper, respectively, at the Inn Above Onion Creek for several years before they decided to open their own restaurant. “When we first opened, we were living at my grandparents’ ranch house, and we spent many nights out there, brainstorming. There’s an old pear tree that sits just beyond the back porch,” says Rachel of the inspiration behind the restaurant’s memorable name. “A pear, to me, is whimsical but also has a certain sophistication to it, and we thought of it as the tree itself is old and leans, but also the pair of us lean on one another.” “It was always our intention to eventually have the opportunity to build something from the ground up, where we could transfer that initial restaurant,”

explains Rachel. The new building is sleek, modern, and considerably larger, now serving approximately twice the number of patrons, with a seating capacity of a little more than 130. It also offers several potential private dining venues that can seat around 30. And longtime fans of the Pear will be pleased to learn that with this expanded location also comes longer hours, including a brand new Sunday brunch, plus a larger menu. The Leaning Pear crew surround owners Matthew “We’re big believers in and Rachel Buchanan, who are seated in front. small menus,” says Rachel. Photo courtesy The Leaning Pear. “A small menu is an honest menu, and we want to continue with that philosophy. We’ve carried mozzarella, and basil pesto on grilled over a lot of items that we had at the for- focaccia. Chicken and green chile-bacon mer location — you kind of want to dance grits, meatloaf, pecan-crusted drum, and with the one that brought you — but now a beef fillet with boulangère potatoes, we have enough space to offer more sub- roasted tomato, and blue cheese butter, stantial dinners and specials. I feel like round out the menu for meat-eaters. “The thing that’s most important people would have our heads on a plate if we were to take their favorites away, so if to us is that we’re offering honest food, there’s a huge uprising about a particular something that you and your loved ones want to eat. There are so many wondersandwich being gone, we’ll listen.” The cafe has always focused on ful moments that are shared over a taoffering fresh, seasonal soups, salads, ble,” says Rachel. “Wimberley has such and sandwiches, with one or two special an eclectic, bohemian mix of people with entrees featured, but new to the menu wonderful minds and wonderful palare a selection of 11-inch wood-fired ates. We initially moved back to Austin, pizzas — two of which are named for the and we loved it, but we love Austin even couple’s young sons. (The Oliver features more being a little removed from it. The spanish chorizo and okra, and the Quintin people here are like family.” FYI • The Leaning Pear is located at 111 River Road, offers up savory salami and basil.) And of course, there are plenty of options for #110. Hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to vegetarians, from tasty salads and pizzas 8 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm, and Sunday to baked gemelli pasta with seasonal from 11 am to 3 pm. The restaurant is closed on Monday. Relaxing space where creativity truly thrives

N

By Allie Eissler

estled in the rolling hills of Wimberley amid fluffy alpacas and peaceful gardens, Old Oaks Ranch offers a relaxing space for creativity to thrive. A jack of all trades, owner Sue Ellen Stavrand’s past endeavors have included everything from realtor to restaurant owner, but it wasn’t until she and her husband moved out of Austin 15 years ago that she was finally able to transform her personal passions into her very first business. “Old Oaks started out as a place to raise our children,” Sue Ellen explains. “There was lots of room to roam and handle critters.” As her children grew older, the long-time animal lover and fiber arts aficionado introduced a herd of alpacas to the ranch, whose soft fleece makes a beautiful merino yarn. “My mom and grandparents were always teaching me the how-to’s of sewing and knitting, and I learned how to weave when I came to Texas,” says Sue Ellen. “I began to appreciate the fiber arts not only for the resulting product, but also for the passing down of knowledge, and the conversations shared while learning and working.” She launched the Fiber Arts Center in early 2007, where felters, weavers, knitters, and spinners can get their fix of fine fabrics, yarns, looms, needles, and ready made, hand-crafted pieces in a cozy, welcoming

community of fellow artists. Looms and warping boards can be rented for daily or weekly rates, and a variety of private classes and workshops are available for all skill levels — from how to darn socks and crochet bags to more advanced surface design techniques. The center will also be participating in the seventh annual Hill Country Yarn Crawl, a 10-day event Friday, October 11, through Sunday, October 20, that leads fiber fans through 11 different yarn shops in central Texas. From alpacas to weaving to strolls in a lovely sculpture garden, Old Oaks Ranch and Fiber Arts Center offers a peaceful retreat to young and old alike. Tours are available every Saturday at 11 am and 1 pm. Photos courtesy Old Oaks Ranch. Visitors can also enjoy a collection of unique, hand-chosen sculptures on site, made by locally and nationally renowned artists. “While the studio was growing, so was our sculpture collection, so we built a sculpture garden specifically for the public to share and enjoy with us,” Sue Ellen adds. “They range from whimsical to inspiring, and it’s always fun to ask customers which one is their favorite and why. In all this mixed bag of animals, art, and fiber,

the real pleasure has been in meeting the people who come to enjoy the ranch.” Old Oaks has recently expanded its programs to include young artists as mentors. Current artists in residence include recent Texas State graduate Emily Lewis, who will be showcasing her latest handembroidered works at the studio October 11-20, and published poet and native Nigerian Timothy Ogene, who is working on his novel in addition to new poetry works. Four guests can enjoy a inspiring getaway at the lodge, a private guest home

with vaulted ceilings, modern appliances, and a gated entrance. Amenities include a fully stocked kitchen, dining table, grill, flat-screen TV, and wireless Internet, and guests are greeted upon arrival with a basket of farm-fresh eggs and seasonal greens from the owner’s garden. FYI • The Old Oaks Ranch and Fiber Arts Center is located at 601 Old Oaks Ranch Road. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 4 pm. Magical shopping experience at Enchantment

stroll through Enchantment is a little like traveling back to a time of carriages, rosettes, and ruffled petticoats, but with just a hint of fairy dust. Tucked away in a charming little cottage on the Square, the store offers an eclectic blend of vintage and new clothing, jewelry, home and garden décor, antiques, cards, candles, and gifts — from scented oils and intricate rings set with colorful Peruvian stones to structured vintage handbags adorned with flowers, glass butterfly wall hangings, and gilded mirrors. The inventory is ever-changing, but the style is always magical.

Diana originally hails from Alabama, but has lived in Texas most of her life, and in Wimberley for nine years. “We used to come vacationing here, and I just fell in love with it,” she says. After many years working in high-tech sales, she decided a change of pace was in order. “I got really burned out, and just wanted to do something I totally enjoyed,” says Diana. She adds with a smile, “I always wanted to figure out how I could make a living at shopping.” The first intimations of Enchantment came in the form of a booth in the Dripping Springs collective Lone Star Gifts, and after moving to Wimberley, she tried several small shop locations on the Square. She moved into her current, two-story building almost

six years ago, and she hasn’t looked back once. “I’m happier than I’ve ever been,” she says. Get back to nature at Mountain View Lodge

N

By Ernie Altgelt

estled on a secluded overlook boasting stunning valley views replete with exceptional sunrises and sunsets, sits a rare nature-immersed getaway that’s been cozily accommodating area guests since the early 1980s. Known appropriately enough as the Mountain View Lodge, this intimate inn in the hills uniquely offers a plentitude of comfort, convenience and quiet combined with ample exciting opportunities to experience (up close and unaltered) the inspirational beauty and diversity that comprise the native flora and fauna. Situated ideally on Wimberley’s welcoming doorstep, the lodge serves admi-

rably as a relaxing, rejuvenating “home base” ready for just “hanging” or as a respite after a rigorous day of exploration and adventure within and around the surrounding countryside. Owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Paul and Jan Prasek, the Mountain View Lodge is comprised of 16 well-appointed (but unpretentious) rooms, the majority of which are blessed with windows and/or porches overlooking unencumbered vistas of the vast and beautiful neighboring valley. All are pleasantly appointed and come equipped with televisions and free Internet connectivity. A complimenting (and refreshing)

swimming pool calls to those desiring a quick dip before a trip into town for lunch, dinner or a little shopping – or maybe just those needing a little wake-up help after a lazy but oh so enjoyable nap. Beckoning chairs and tables also await any seeking shade and a cool breeze in the adjoining picnic area. When considering the entire “package” as Jan volunteers, “Our Mountain View Lodge is not some ‘huge’ impersonal property where hundreds are housed but rather, since

there are so few rooms, more like small informal enclave where the guests (often families) are encouraged to mix and become acquainted. Everyone seems to like it that way.” As proof, many “regulars” consider the lodge as their second home spending annual vacations there – most even requesting the same rooms year after the year, something the Praseks are happy to accommodate. Beyond the actual stone and mortar See MOUNTAIN VIEW LODGE, page 21

Visitors are introduced to the numerous plants and trees that thrive (naturally) in the rocky soils. Many are numbered and referenced in a complementary comprehensive guide book expertly prepared by former guest Bill Carr, a noted Texas Parks and Wildlife botanist. Some of the species encountered include jujube, sumac, madrone, red bud and yaupon. Many others are identified as well. Add to that a fossilized dinosaur tract (left by the huge and thankfully extinct) allosaurus and dozens of seasonally-appearing birds, including the dramatic painted bunting and myriad hummers,

And a holiday season in Wimberley is simply not complete without a visit to the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens’ Holiday Trail of Lights.  More than 100 seasonal exhibits along the trail (including Santa’s house) created by local families, individuals, businesses, schools, churches, and organizations combine to make this one of the best family-oriented holiday sites in the Hill Country. This year, the theatre received a small grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts to support the Trail of Lights, which last year hosted more than 21,000 visitors. Feeling festive? A few display spots are still up for grabs. “If you have a need to decorate, contact us here at the EmilyAnn,” says Ann with a smile. Exhibitors can begin setting up and decorating November 1; displays must be completed by November 24. Guests at the Trail of Lights can enjoy a train ride on the Jingle Bell Express (for children weighing 60 lbs or less). Enjoy complimentary  hot cocoa at the Yule Log. Donations are needed (and appreciated) to help defray expenses. Don’t miss the grand holiday Trail of Lights Opening Ceremonies November 30 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Highlights include Santa’s arrival by fire truck at 5 pm and the lighting of displays and the hilltop tree at dusk (about 5:40 pm). As the tree and displays come to life with thousands of sparkling lights, Tim Altenhoff will sing “O Holy Night.” After the official tree lighting, the Trail will be open from 6 pm to 10 pm. WAG Rescue, truly a dog’s best friend

ogs and dog lovers alike have found a trusty best friend in Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue (WAG), a volunteer-supported nonprofit and network of foster families that prides itself on finding loving homes for local canines. Since June 2009, WAG has placed and provided medical treatment to over 348 stray, abandoned, unclaimed, or surrendered animals, and promoted responsible pet ownership through a variety of community outreach programs — and all without even having a physical shelter. They offer low or no-cost spay and neuter vouchers via Austin-based advocates Emancipet, and also serve as a comprehensive lost and found resource. “We never dreamed that this would be another community service that we

We’ll try for a long time to find the owners, and we’ve returned a lot of dogs.” Pat and fellow co-founder and board member Debbie Nordyke originally volunteered for the Animal Referral Friends (ARF) of Wimberley, but quickly realized that rescue dogs needed even more funding and resources than they had at their disposal, particularly proactive treatment of heartworm disease. As a result, Pat and Debbie decided to break off and form an organization especially for dogs. “I was shocked at the number of aniSee WAG RESCUE, page 25

They’d be picked up by Hays County Animal Control, taken to the San Marcos shelter, and euthanized within three to five days.” All prospective foster pet parents are pre-screened to ensure a good fit — namely, that they can provide patience, companionship, compassion, and a canine-friendly living space. But as one might suspect, fostering can often be a gateway to adopting as well. “We tease about foster failure, because so many people eventually find a dog they just have to have,” says Pat. “We had one foster mom who had taken care of 13 dogs for us, but number 13 ended up being the one she and her son fell in love with.” Pat herself now has two dogs and two cats. “We always had a lot of different animals growing up. Horses and cows, but always dogs, too,” she recalls. “Cia is my 10-year-old blonde Shepherd mix from a rescue group in Dallas, and wild as the wind. I lost my other Shepherd mix, Rio, this year to bone cancer. But WAG Rescue recently helped a man who had 10 puppies, and I saw one in particular and decided to adopt her. She’s just a delight — very sweet and smart.” The rescue will be hosting their second annual fundraiser (or “friendraiser,” as they prefer to call it), the WAGala, at the Leaning Pear on Sunday, October 13,
