Wimberley Village Thrift Store BY BONNIE EISSLER

T

he Wimberley Village Thrift Store, incorporated in 2002, is a nonprofit thrift store staffed entirely by a team of dedicated volunteers. Everything sold in the store has been donated by a generous and caring community. And through the sales of this new and gently used donated merchandise, the Village Thrift Store provides support for five local nonprofit organizations, including the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens, Keep Wimberley Beautiful, PAWS Shelter of Central Texas, Wimberley Valley Habitat for Humanity, and The Wimberley Players. “The financial support earned for these organizations through volunteer hours (20,814 hours last year), working for the store, has been substantial,” says Cookie Hagemeier, who serves as president of the 10-person Village Store board. In 2019, the donations exceeded those from any previous year. The Village Store was also voted “Best of Wimberley” in its category for the last three years. With its relocation to 450 River Road in 2016, the store expanded operations. Now, in addition to the main thrift shop, which is a department style store, there’s a Builder’s Barn for home improvement materials, and a boutique with higher end merchandise that includes vintage, collectibles and antiques, such as a recently donated antique Singer sewing machine. The boutique is located in the historic century-old Miss Lillie Dobie House, which was built in 1920 and designated a Texas Historic Landmark in 2016. The main store offers linens and a large clothing department, all nicely organized, with infant, children and adult departments. Higher end or designer clothes, handbags and shoes can be found in the boutique in the Dobie house, which has a kitchen, dining room and two bedrooms. Donated kitchen items are in the kitchen, while china, crystal, flatware and other items typically associated with a dining room are showcased there, linens in the bedrooms, and collectibles find a temporary home in a vintage etagere. The Village Thrift Store would not exist without its dedicated group of about 76 volunteers, who work hard and are committed to the mission of the store. The organization receives donations every day that are placed in a tent outside for a day before processing begins. Volunteers presort, price and inventory donations, organize and display all of the items, and greet and assist store customers as needed. While volunteers are essential, the store also would not exist without the many donations from the people of Wimberley. Cookie says, “During the time at home (during the quarantine), all of Wimberley must have cleaned house because our donations have been quite incredible.” See WIMBERLEY VILLAGE STORE, Page 8

This year has been extraordinary as the thrift store copes with the changes in the community due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Village Store Board made the responsible decision to close the store in March. Before reopening at the beginning of July, the staff researched and planned for necessary safety protocols, to include the installation of Plexiglass, requirements for wearing protective face covering and sanitizing of surfaces. One of the most significant safety upgrades was the air purification with UV light units added to their four HVAC systems. Cookie says, “We are delighted to be open and serving Wimberley again. Our volunteers are once again finding the Village Store to be their ‘happy place’ and customers are enjoying shopping for their special treasures.” With very affordable prices, the thrift store serves the community with the opportunity to purchase items that would be much more costly in a retail store, and helps the environment by recycling and repurposing clothing, furniture, practical and decorative items, and so much more that might otherwise be discarded.

Jobell Cáfe & Bistro BY ERNIE ALTGELT

T

David & Jessenia Bober visit with their guests at Jobell Cafe & Bistro.

he year 2020 has certainly been a doozy. Social distancing, closed businesses, stuck at home – boo! But, as things continue to improve (hallelujah), more and more of what we’ve missed from our pre-Corona existence are starting to return and, for most of us, it’s about time! Really, we’re all ready for a little normalcy. How about a night out? Well, one of the most enjoyable things for those of us blessed with being in Wimberley has always been visiting one of our most unique and popular local restaurants – the Jobell Café and Bistro. Since opening six years ago (for lunch and dinner), this somewhat eclectic eatery, where big city flavors happily combine with small town tastes, has been wowing natives and tourists alike with its gourmet sophistication that’s never, ever, served up with any of the unwanted pretense – just great food. And, now that it’s okay to dine-in again, area folks can’t seem to get enough of the place. Um, um, good! Launched in 2014 by an intrepid, married couple seeking solace from urban congestion (namely New York), Jobell represents a long, jointly-held dream brought finally to fruition. Founders Jessenia and David Bober first met in Manhattan where he worked as a remodeling contractor and she (originally from Dallas), as an aspiring actress. Neither had any direct restaurant management and/ or development experience but both had been raised in households where “food was never taken for granted.” David’s mother was a respected writer of culinary history. Jess’s family represents a bi-cultural collaboration – Chinese and Cuban – where experimentation and blending promoted some very interesting, melded flavors. Together, these admitted “foodies” thought that with hard work coupled with their individually-acquired/refined palates, establishing a successful, world-class restaurant in nurturing, downhome Wimberley was definitely doable. And, in hindsight, boy were they right. Jobell (named for their two children, Josh and Isabella) is housed in totally revamped digs situated just outside of the town proper on a park-like acre of land filled with enchanting trees and a bubbling water feature that seem to beckon to visitors to just “come on in and have a seat.” See JOBELL CÁFE & BISTRO, Page 12

Everything inside is planned to enhance the dining experience throughout its intimate, inviting, art-filled spaces. And, for those wishing a little fresh air, the equally comfy outdoor deck is the place to be. In or out, diners won’t feel crowded (social distancing is still the rule) and the atmosphere is always calm and relaxing allowing for an undistracted focus on the food and beverages, which is how it should be. And, how about that food? Well for starters, many opt for Jobell’s exceptional Littleneck Clams and Mussels Provencal? Or maybe, some crispy Thai Chili Brussels sprouts. Does that give you an idea? Follow the openers with generous entrees that include a buttery Chilean Sea Bass in a lemon and cream sauce, a seriously seared smoked duck breast in an orange reduction, a very vegetarian option of a half acorn squash stuffed with ancient grains and topped with melted ricotta cheese and lastly for traditionalists, a perfectly-grilled 12 ounce Niman Ranch prime ribeye. Yum! Delicious soups, salads and desserts abound as well. And, since this is a bistro, great wines and beer are offered in plenty too. Freshness is paramount and, the majority of the edibles are locally sourced. Everything is made on site “from scratch” and is affordably priced. When considered, it really is the perfect recipe of melding hearty Hill Country appetites with a little New York internationalism and, based on the repeat business enjoyed, it’s a hit. Are Jess and David a little proud of what they’ve accomplished over the past six years? You betcha. As David states, “Even when the pandemic caused us to temporarily close our dining rooms, we kept things going and our spirits (and skills) up by offering take-out and even providing delivery. While difficult at times, we never stopped being true to ourselves or our vision for ‘Jobell,’ thanks to the unflagging loyalty of our employees and especially, our patrons.” So hungry reader, if you’re already in Wimberley or, planning a visit soon, make sure Jobell Cafe & Bistro is on your “must-experience” list. It may surprise but definitely won’t disappoint! Photos courtesy Jobell Cáfe & Bistro. Jobell Cáfe & Bistro is located at 16920 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. For more information, visit the website at www.jobellcafe.com or call 512847-5700. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 am to 2 pm and dinner from 5 pm to 10 pm (closed Mondays). Brunch is served on Sundays. CDC recommendations are followed.

ean Miller, owner of one of the oldest shops in Wimberley, bought Rancho Deluxe in June 2012 after spending many years wholesaling Mexican art from the back of his pickup truck. Rancho Deluxe has an Old West south-of-the-border ambiance that makes it a wonderful shop to browse around in search of unusual gifts and decorative items for your home. Dean grew up in Lufkin, a small town in the Piney Woods region of East Texas. There’s a pinata store in Lufkin, and you can find some pretty good tamales in one of the Mexican restaurants, but this isn’t an area with stores that sell art from Mexico and other exotic locales around the world. Even in high school, Dean was fascinated with Mexican culture. He had Hispanic friends and once he was out of high school, he traveled to Laredo, boarded a bus and traveled further into Mexico, soaking up the culture and learning as much as he could. At that time, he wasn’t thinking so much about buying and selling, although he does recall buying ten switchblade knives for $10 and later selling them to friends back home for $5 each. He traveled a lot in the early days. “I flew, drove, bicycled, walked, rode in the back of a chicken bus,” Dean says, remembering how he got around during those vagabond years. As he traveled all around Mexico, he bought the items directly from the artisans who made them and sold them wholesale to shops in Texas, in towns like Fredericksburg, Boerne and Wimberley. He was especially attracted to Wimberley. One of the people he sold his merchandise to was Sally Curtis, who at the time owned Rancho Deluxe. “She wanted to sell and I wanted to buy so we worked together that way for a while,” Dean says. Today, as the owner of the store, Dean says, “It was a risk to switch from selling stuff from the bed of my pickup to owning a high-end shop in a top tourist town, but I like this better. You can go home at night.” Although the store’s original art and metal sculptures, lamps, rustic furniture and accessories come from many different artists and places, the common thread connecting much of the merchandise is that it’s handmade. Dean likes to know about the individual artists and be able to share their stories. Much of the art he offers comes from Mexico, but that’s not the only source. The shop showcases several area artists and merchants along with many items from countries around the world. “I sell photographs by (Wimberley resident) Robert Anschutz and some of Alan Kimball’s books,” Dean says, “and BBQ See RANCHO DELUXE, Page 15

sauce from Wimberley’s own Creekside Cookers.” Robert Anschutz documents the beauty of the Texas Hill Country through his photography and is an exhibiting member of both the Wimberley Valley and New Braunfels Art Leagues. Other treasures crafted in Texas that are available at Rancho Deluxe are mesquite crosses from Bandera and exquisite Lazy Susans by Wimberley woodworker Tom Gordon. Vintage style cowboy pictures and rodeo posters in barnwood frames are customer favorites, as are the “architectural pieces” that resemble old gothic church windows. Collectors might seek out the alebrijes, the brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures or Gerardo Trejo’s Amate bark paper wall art with Otomi designs. The Otomi are indigeneous people of the central Mexican Plateau and the bark is from fig and mulberry trees. You’re sure to find a special out-of-the-ordinary touch for your own home at Rancho Deluxe! Photos by Julie Harrington.

Nature’s Choice CBD & Sups BY ERNIE ALTGELT

W

imberley, Texas, has always been recognized as one of the healthiest places to live on Earth. With its pristine, Hill Country environs where smog and other pollutants are virtually unknown, folks suffering from a variety of ailments have come seeking its comforting embrace and ultimately, relief. Ahh, Wimberley! However, for all of the benefits associated with life in this welcoming burg, illness and the lingering effect of injury are still present but now, thankfully for those afflicted, finding a source for allnatural help beyond the emergency room just got a whole lot easier. Can you say “cannabidiol?” Well, that’s what Nature’s Choice CBDs and Sups is all about! And, just what is cannabidiol? Known as CBD for short, it’s a trending ingredient derived from cannabis (hemp) that has shown to be effective in treating a wide range of physical and emotional complaints. Extensively studied and now legally available in most states, CBD’s therapeutic powers have proven to be, as many will attest, “incredible.” Opening in 2019, Nature’s Choice CBDs & Sups (short for supplements) represents the area’s first (and only) comprehensive outlet for “all things cannabidiol.” The store got its start after the company’s co-owner, Joe Valdez, suffered a medical mishap that caused paralysis. When traditional treatments didn’t alleviate Joe’s severe pain and left him unable to move his legs, he and his wife Chris (the other owner) headed to Colorado where CBDs and other phytocannabinoids were then available. As he attests, “Being introduced to this product for the first time, bringing some home then administering it had a remarkable effect. I improved almost immediately. Today, my pain is almost entirely gone and now, I can even walk again!” With such a personal testimonial, the determined pair became intent on sharing what they had experienced and, with Texas now recognizing the value of CBDs and other phytocannabinoids decided to open up their shop in Wimberley, knowing others could benefit as Joe has. See NATURE’S CHOICE CBDs & SUPS, Page 17

16   Welcome to Wimberley Fall/Winter 2020-21

NATURE’S CHOICE CBDs & SUPS, from Page 16

Nature’s Choice CBDs & Sups, located conveniently on the town square (where the Quarter Shops are along the Cypress Creek), is overflowing with a range of quality CBD products targeting almost any discomfort or health concern. These include cardiac, immunity, anxiety, recovery, aging, skin, mobility, pain relief, stress and other issues that can negatively affect one’s wellbeing. Everything is sold with instructions on the product’s use to enable a positive outcome. And, the methods of ingestion/application are easy, pleasant and varied. Teas, aromatics, oils, lotions, edibles and other forms are available that all allow for the body’s proper absorption of the cannabidiol. As Joe explains, “We stock hundreds of different CBD products all scientifically developed to ensure the most efficacious treatment. We can, and do, help young and old – really, almost anyone who is suffering. Even pets!” And, based on the community’s acceptance of the new enterprise, as evidenced by its ever-growing customer list, Nature’s Choice CBD & Sups is truly filling a need. Regarding product, the company only offers CBD items that are GMP (good manufacturing practice) certified. This international accreditation assures that everything sold is consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. Further, as Chris states, “All of our merchandise is organically grown, pharmaceutical grade, non-GMO, made in the USA, 3rd party tested, Gluten Free, all natural, industrial hemp registered, farm bill compliant, pesticides free with no metals and no harsh chemicals.” Shoppers at Nature’s Choice CBDs & Sups can

rest assured that purity, along with product integrity, is always guaranteed. So, are you feeling a little low or anxious? Or, maybe that arthritic knee or bad back is acting up and not letting you sleep at night. How about those deepening crows’ feet around the eyes? Well, if something just isn’t right (large or small), maybe a visit to Nature’s Choice CBDs & Sups is called for. It sure couldn’t hurt! Photos courtesy Nature’s Choice CBD & Sups.

Nature’s Choice CBD & Sups is located in downtown Wimberley at 14015 Ranch Road 12, Suite 8, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm and Sundays from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. Wimberley Marketplace BY BONNIE EISSLER

M

imi Taylor, owner of Wimberley Marketplace, moved here in 2008 when she accepted a job as a junior high school history teacher and coach, and it didn’t take her long to appreciate the charms and embrace the lifestyle of her new home. “This is a special place and I am so thankful to have landed here,” she says. “the people here are one of a kind, they support their own in good times and in bad.” Wimberley is also home to many creative people, artists, musicians and writers, and has a knack for inspiring, motivating and drawing out the talents of those who live there. While she was teaching, Mimi noticed a need for fun, casual but stylish, shirts that could be worn to school. Mimi says, “We made our first Wimberley graphic tee and the business over the years grew and evolved into a wholesale t-shirt brand.” Mimi taught for 10 years and only recently stopped teaching to work at her growing business full time. A second store, Wildflower, recently opened on the square. “This sister store, at 103 Henson Road, won Best New Business in 2020 in the Wimberley View Best of Wimberley Contest,” Mimi says. “We’re best known for our trademark brand, Texaholic™, which you can find in over 200 stores throughout Texas,” Mimi says. Other stores in this corner of the Texas Hill Country that carry Texaholic tees are: Two P’s in Callies in San Marcos, Petticoat Junction in Spring Branch, Gruene Haus in Gruene, and Western Edge in Fredericksburg. The idea behind Texaholic™ is that it’s understandable and absolutely proper to proclaim your addiction to Texas, your home state forever even if you’ve moved away. and music, the Lone Star State, and by extension bluebonnets, sweet tea, BBQ, and Willie Nelson, are all worthy of obsession. (A reasonably priced large 100% cotton tea towel lists all of these and more of the things we love about our state, and is a great gift for yourself and others.) The popular shirts are made of soft cotton with set-in sleeves and are available in as many colors as a field of Texas wildflowers. Wimberley Marketplace offers everything from face masks and candles to tees and hats in their boutiques. Since the advent of COVID19, face masks have become the latest fashion accessory and the ones available from Wimberley Merchandise are quite stylish, with two layers of black cotton and an outer layer of polyester for printing “Texaholic” diagonally in multiples across the mask. Customers love their cute comfortable clothing because it’s fun and affordable. “Our customers range from babies to grandmas,” Mimi says, “we serve a huge age range and pride ourselves on having something for everyone!” In addition to their own brands, Texaholic and Southern Fringe (SF) Originals, they offer boutique items, other top-quality brands like Charlie 1 Horse and Sweet Texas Treasures, and many accessories, from whimsical velvet rabbit ear scrunchies to vintage distressed trucker caps. Charlie 1 Horse hats have a western cowboy and outlaw, although not exclusively western, vibe that has made them the headwear choice for celebrities like musicians Kid Rock and Hank Williams, Jr. and king of the racetrack Richard Petty. These stylish,

handmade hats with their wide often embellished bands, will look just as good worn by the fashionable folks in Wimberley. “They say ‘it takes a village’ (to work and live together in harmony) and I am forever grateful for my Wimberley Village,” Mimi says. “Owning a store was always a childhood dream and getting to do it in this beautiful place is just icing on the cake!” Photos courtesy Wimberley Marketplace. KING FEED & Hardware Doc, the King Feed parrot, greets guests as they enter the store.

BY BONNIE EISSLER

K

ing Feed is the oldest retailer in Wimberley, dating back more than 65 years, to when the Cowan family had a cedar yard and sawmill on the site and a small store where they sold nuts, bolts, feed and ranch supplies. Over the last six and a half decades, the business has grown along with the town of Wimberley. Today, after several owners, numerous additions and renovations, the hometown hardware store still sells nuts and bolts, but it is no longer just a feed and hardware store. An expansion to the store several years ago brought in Wimberley-based architect Guy Rollins, who specializes in green architecture using natural locally available and recycled materials whenever possible, such as the rafters in the entrance. He recycled a lot of other materials from the old Cowan house on the property to use in the front and back of the new store addition and the feed barn. In January 2019, long-time employees Laurie Ward and Bryan Toifl took over the ownership of King Feed from Chris Nichols. “Bryan has worked here for 14 years, since high school, primarily in the feed and hardware section of the store,” Laurie says, “we’ve both worked here for 14 years.” Laurie’s area of interest has been the extensive garden center. She earned her degree in agriculture from Texas State University, with an emphasis on horticulture. Laurie and Bryan are experienced, well-qualified and passionate about keeping the traditions of King Feed alive while streamlining some of the services and, most recently, adding a pet grooming salon with plans for a pet-related gift boutique. The store is a magnet for the DIY crowd and seems to stock everything anyone could possibly want or need, including plumbing and electrical supplies, lawn and garden products, pet supplies and feed for livestock, tools and paint. The “whimsical modern and old assortment” means customers will find iphone chargers and solar power gate openers as well as horseshoe nails and galvanized milk buckets. Yet despite its large size, diversity and quantity of merchandise, King Feed is reminiscent of an old-fashioned general store, the kind that offers something for everyone and knowledgeable, See KING FEED, Page 25

experienced people on hand who make a special effort to help customers find what they need. The garden center has expanded over the years to include a beautiful greenhouse built out of rock, steel and glass, and a full line of annuals, perennials, native shrubs and trees along with a large selection of organic products for the garden. An unusual feature in the garden center is the rock fireplace that integrates the ruins of the old chimney from the Cowan house into the design and serves as a poignant reminder of the early beginnings of King Feed. “We offer full service with plants, compost, fertilizer and everything you need for garden and landscape,” Laurie says. They also sell a lot of pottery, the always popular solid glazed pottery as well as the colorful Talavera pottery, decorated with floral and animal motifs in a classically Mexican style. The store carries Stihl and Echo power equipment – chain saws, weed trimmers, brush saws, blowers, and pole pruners. There’s a small engine repair shop on the premises that is certified to perform repairs on all Stihl and Echo products. Pet grooming is the newest addition to the already wide range of services provided at King Feed, with Ashley as head pet groomer. Ashley, who is married to Bryan, has worked in the pet industry for 12 years (as a groomer for 11 years) and understands the proper coat care for all coat types. Although she graduated from Texas State University with a degree in accounting in 2014, she decided that grooming was her passion. King Feed Pet Grooming Salon offers hair grooming, bathing, nail clipping and deshedding for dogs, cat, and select services for small animals and birds. Photos by Julie Harrington. King Feed and Hardware is located at 14210 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4:30 pm. Blue Hole Regional Park BY BONNIE EISSLER

W

imberley’s Blue Hole has been ranked among the best swimming holes in the state of Texas and even the nation. The famous swimming hole is the centerpiece of Blue Hole Regional Park, 126 acres that encompass much of the Hill Country’s natural beauty with native grasses, delicate wildflowers, craggy ledges, massive slabs of limestone and towering cypress trees. It’s hard to believe that this tranquil spot is just a short distance from all the shops and cafes lining the bustling town square. Jacob’s Well, the artesian spring that feeds Cypress Creek and Blue Hole is a constant 68 degrees, so the water at Blue Hole is similarly quite cool. This cool blast of water is sometimes described as invigorating (or just a tad too cold), but most of the time it’s a welcome respite from the Texas heat. For many years, locals and vacationers have plunged into the clear, cool waters of Blue Hole, which is two feet at its shallowest and between 16 and 20 feet at its deepest. Blue Hole Regional Park is a wildly popular destination, still a treasure but no longer the hidden treasure it once was, and can be crowded during the summer swim season, when there are thousands of visitors from Memorial Day to Labor Day. To pro-

tect these natural areas and provide a more enjoyable and safer experience for visitors, the park limits the number of people who can swim at one time. The summer of 2020, due to the COVID19 pandemic, presented challenges that required closing the park for a while and later limiting the number of visitors in the swimming area to a maximum of 100, with reservations required. All of the reservations quickly sold out for the remainder of the 2020 season, although the park remained open for walkers and birdwatchers who wanted to enjoy the serenity of the park. Much of the master plan that was originally envisioned by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in 2006 has been completed and includes a community pavilion, a basketball court, wildflower gardens, rock work, and 4-1/2 miles of hiking and biking trails. Restoration of native plant species required planting hundreds of native trees and thousands of pots of switchgrass, big bluestem, and native shrubs. Hays County Master Naturalist chapter members, Keep Wimberley Beautiful and Boy Scout Troop 127 and Pack 127 spent many hours restoring the parkland at Blue Hole. The creek is lined with bald cypress trees creating a shady riparian area with abundant food sources that attract a wide See BLUE HOLE REGIONAL PARK, Page 27

variety of birds. Many songbirds, including the curious little chickadees, the combative cardinals and plump phoebes, live in the large oaks, elms, persimmon and sycamore trees in the lush wooded areas. The different seasons bring with them their own distinctive species, while other birds like the Eastern bluebird and the Carolina wren, mourning dove and Red-shouldered hawk can be observed throughout the year. The peak birding seasons are the spring and fall. Over the years, hundreds of volunteers have devoted thousands of hours to accomplish the mission of the Friends of Blue Hole: “to protect, restore, and develop the park as a recreational, educational and ecological resource for present and future generations.” Photos courtesy Blue Hole Regional Park. Church Leaders Rev. Kevin LJ Schubert ST. STEPHEN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Reverend Kevin Schubert is the new rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He is joined by his wife, Heather, two young sons, and their family dog, Willie Nelson. Fr. Kevin served as rector at St. George’s Episcopal in Austin for a decade prior to coming to St. Stephen’s. He is a graduate of the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin and ordained a priest in 2007. He earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology and history from Texas State in 2000. What you may not know about Fr. Kevin is that he is also a musician. You just never know when he will be joining the Sunday service procession playing his drums. He has learned many things from God through life’s experiences–one of the most valuable being the importance of relationship. In fact, this defines his ministry: to be a friend with God in all avenues of life. His hope and prayer is that you and he become friends through God. Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at St. Stephen’s. Sunday worship service is held at 10:30 am and Morning Prayer is held in the courtyard on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am. Visit the website at ststeve.org for more information.

In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Real Estate Professionals Barbara Latimer, Broker/Branch Manager HILLS OF TEXAS / SKY REALTY Broker/Owner at Hills of Texas Realty, Barbara merged her company with Sky Realty in 2015 to form Hills of Texas/ Sky Realty. Her 24+ years’ experience and knowledge of the market provides the highest level of service for her clients. “It’s work I love. There is nothing else I’d rather do, she says. “There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients.” Well, septic and Oak wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign. A local market expert and a Texas Monthly “Five Star Real Estate Agent” for the last 11 years, it is obvious Barbara loves her career and is eager to help buyers and sellers. Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.” Originally from Houston and a graduate of the University of Texas, Barbara and her family moved to Wimberley in 1997. In her free time, she and her husband, Gaylan, enjoy boating, live music venues and exploring the Hill Country.

Linda Germain, REALTOR, ABR, GRI, SRES, SRS KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY Linda Germain has been a Realtor here in the Texas Hill Country with Keller Williams Realty for the past 16 years, since starting her Real Estate career in 2004. Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Linda attended San Francisco State College, majored in Business, and then spent more than 25 years in retail management for major retailers. Outstanding customer service has always been a high priority in Linda’s retail career and remains her number one priority in working with her Real Estate clients. She is a member of the National and Texas Association of Realtors, as well as the Austin and Four Rivers Board of Realtors. Linda and her husband, Gene, moved to Wimberley 16 years ago and both are active, involved members of the Wimberley community. Linda has served a total of three terms on the Board of Directors for the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce, having served as the Board’s Chairperson for two years. She is past President and current Membership Chair for the Wimberley Community Chorus and served two terms as Secretary of the Wimberley Valley Arts & Cultural Alliance (WVACA). As a long-time volunteer for Alzheimer’s Texas, Linda facilitates the Wimberley Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group, teaches caregiver classes for Alzheimer’s Texas and has been a partner in establishing and operating ‘Circle of Friends,’ a weekly Respite Program established through the Wimberley Senior Center that is in its fifth year of operation. “It is a joy to live here in Wimberley and an honor to serve and ‘give back’ to the Wimberley community.” We miss being able to participate in all of our regular activities. We all look forward to getting back to ‘normal’ again sometime soon...meeting together again, singing together again and looking forward to seeing each other smile again!
