Community unites to save iconic landmark

O

By Colleen Brooks

ld Baldy has been a breathtaking and iconic Wimberley landmark for generations. Also referred to as Mount Baldy, or Prayer Mountain, this beloved high point has been the site of many marriage proposals, boy scout camping trips, family traditions, and is popular among those seeking to achieve fitness. Most just climb it for the magnificent view of Wimberley. Last June, Old Baldy became inaccessible to the public overnight. Locals who attempted to climb up its 218 steps were greeted with a “No Trespassing” sign and a chain preventing entry. At the time, Old Baldy was owned by City Gate Church, a small Wimberley church, and was put up for sale. Wimberley residents Lin and Andrew Weber were disheartened when they saw this beloved landmark no longer accessible to the public, and took it upon themselves to organize a team with the goal of securing the Wimberley treasure for future generations. The Webers named the non-profit group the “Save Old Baldy Foundation” and organized with members Andrew and Lin Weber, Jean McMeans, Linda Allen, Linda Land, Linda Lang, Jane Little, Susan Nenney and Brent Pulley. Lin recalls, “We also had three special friends who donated a lot of time and effort to make it work.” Their goal: to purchase the land, raise funds to repay the loan and secure Old Baldy as a public place for all future generations. The City of Wimberley agreed to purchase Mount Baldy from the foundation for a modest price if the foundation could raise the remaining $95,000 needed to cover the purchase price and asso-

ciated costs within six months. The Save Old Baldy Foundation was able to purchase the mountain with a loan from a generous resident for $160,000. They closed on the property in July 2014, leased it to the city with a purchase option, and began raising money to repay the loan plus additional expenses, amounting to a total of $170,000. Calling it a “leap of faith,” they believed the residents of this town would unite to help them pay back the loan. Lin says, “It is one of Wimberley’s treasures, right up there with Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole. It’s a natural wonder that has to be preserved.” Foundation members approached merchants and clubs, connected with friends, designed a website and a Facebook page, and put flyers up all over town. Word spread quickly, the community was receptive and supportive. A major fundraising event — “Baldyfest” —was held at Cypress Creek Cafe. November 8, 2014, the all day event featured live music, vendors, a silent auction, raffle items from local merchants, a bouncy house, and temporary tattoos. Everything was generously donated, including the venue. Jim Drew, a local musician, helped organize all the music for this event in addition to arranging the venue which Cypress Creek Cafe owners Randy and Trish Uselton generously donated. As a result, the foundation was able to take in $22,700 from the one event. This assistance was instrumental to the foundation. Lin says appreciatively, “We’re very grateful to those folks for their help. We couldn’t have done it without them.” Additional donations came in from many different places. SAVE OLD BALDY, from page 5 Linda’s Fine Foods donated a percentage of her proceeds from Tuesday lunches in October, and Silo Glass created commemorative Old Baldy plates of which half the proceeds in December and January went directly to the foundation. Guests at The Leaning Pear tossed their change in the coin funnel to benefit Save Old Baldy, and some of the foundation members even stood outside of Brookshire Brothers grocery on two occasions soliciting funds. Online donations added up, as well, ranging from amounts as small as $1 to $5,000 and more. As the deadline approached in December, the foundation received a $5,000 donation from an anonymous Wimberley resident. Simultaneously, the Burdine Johnson Foundation generously gave them the remaining amount they needed to arrive at their goal. The foundation closed on the sale of the property and was able to pay off their loan and all other expenses in full. After that, donations still continued to trickle in that put them above their goal. The foundation has turned the extra money over to the city, which has established a separate maintenance fund for Old Baldy. Lin and her husband Andrew have childhood memories of Old Baldy, and say they felt it was critical for locals and out-of-towners to be able to continue to have access. She describes Old Baldy as, “A Wimberley treasure with an incredible

view from the top, especially in the fall when you can see the colors of the cypress trees along Cypress Creek.” Lin smiles nostalgically and adds, “It’s magical.” Jean McMeans, secretary of the Save Old Baldy foundation, explains, “It truly was bald, after the 1930s,” after a US government cedar mitigation program cleared it of all its cedar trees. Others remember the days when Old Baldy was owned by Eagle Mountain Resort and had a jukebox and a dance floor on top. There even used to be live music. Musicians used to carry their instruments all the way to the top. Ask any longtime resident of Wimberley, and they’re bound to have a favorite memory of the mountain, which is why the fundraising was such a success. Lin explains, “It was really a group effort.” Jean quickly clarifies Lin and Andrew’s critical role by adding, “But they were the leaders, and it wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t have led it.” FYI • To visit Old Baldy, head north on Farm Market 2325 from the Wimberley Square. Go 1.7 miles and turn right on Woodcreek Drive, then take the first right onto El Camino Real. Go 0.2 mi to the dead end and turn right on La Toya Trail. After about a half mile, you will see the parking area and the Old Baldy steps. Visit the Old Baldy website at www.saveoldbaldy.org to see old photos, read more of its history and stories, or to submit your own. Visit Silo Glass at 7990 Ranch Road 12 (on the way to San Marcos) to purchase a commemorative Old Baldy plate. The handmade plates are available in varying sizes with prices ranging from $15-$30.

Creating community at Pitzer’s Fine Arts

Y

By Colleen Brooks

ou might say Rob Pitzer, owner of Pitzer’s Fine Arts in Wimberley, got into the art business a bit by accident. In 1978, Rob’s focus was on his newly purchased retail store in Corpus Christi, which had no ties to art other than a small room where shows had been hosted on occasion. Rob decided to continue that tradition by having his own art show. It was a success, in fact, every piece sold. And that was the beginning of Rob’s career change. One day, sculptor Kent Ullberg walked into his shop. Rob asked Kent

if he would allow him to sell one of his sculptures, and Kent reluctantly agreed. The piece sold, and Rob requested another, which also sold. The two continued this process a few more times. “Finally, one day, Kent brought me some new sculpture and said, ‘Bloody hell, Rob, when are you gonna turn this place into a legitimate art gallery?’” he recalls. And Rob did just that. He sold the retail store and opened up a “legitimate” art gallery right next door. “And the rest is history, as they say,” he smiles. Rob and Kent became good friends. He explains the sculptor’s role in his ca-

Wimberley Fine Arts Center offering National Artists’ Works You’ll Love to Live With

reer, “It was because of him that other artists came to me. I didn’t go out really chasing a lot of artists, I was very fortunate in that he gained popularity and notoriety very quickly nationwide.” Rob eventually moved to Carmel, CA, where the market was saturated with art. “We were one of a hundred galleries in one square mile,” he explains. After opening Pitzer’s Fine Arts in Carmel, he placed the town’s first piece of public sculpture, created by sculptor George Lundeen entitled “The Valentine.” It featured a life-sized elderly couple sitting on a bench, heads together affectionately. The piece created a stir in the community, and quickly became one of the area’s most photographed items. Rob also created the first annual Carmel Art Festival. After 13 successful years in Carmel, Rob decided it was time to move back to Texas. But instead of returning to Corpus Christi, he decided on Wimberley, opening Pitzer’s Fine Arts just off the Square in 2006. In typical Rob style, he purchased the building that would become the gallery over a cup of coffee. Pitzer’s Fine Arts typically features 30 to 40 exceptional artists on display daily, specializing primarily in paintings and indoor and outdoor bronze sculpture. See PITZER’S FINE ARTS, page 9

Sculptures range from coffee table pieces to very large pieces and includes works by renowned artists such as Kent Ullberg, Angela De la Vega and Bill Nebeker, along with many others. A beautiful outdoor sculpture garden is located just in front of the gallery. The gallery’s painting collection features work from artists including Luke Frazier, Robert Peters, Rusty Jones, Phil Beck and Nelson Boren, to name a few. Works of realism, impressionism, landscapes, wildlife, Native American, Western and still life are on display at Pitzer’s Fine Arts. Rob has worked with some of these artists throughout his entire career. “It’s a good business obviously, and I’m still very enthusiastic about what I do,” he says. “I have a lot of friends from the artist side of the desk and the buyer’s side of the desk. Some of these clients have been with me for 37 years.” “I will have people today all of a sudden just pop in that maybe I haven’t seen in 15 or 20 years. There are a lot of rewards,” he nods with a smile. There is also plenty of art at Pitzer’s Fine Arts going on behind the scenes. A large portion of Rob’s business involves life-size sculptures sold for commercial projects like schools, libraries, malls, shopping centers and municipalities. Rob currently works with about 400 sculptors. Pitzer’s Fine Arts also offer resales of estate art, in addition to handmade jewelry and mosaics from local artists. In 2013, Rob created an artists’ collaborative in Wimberley, made up of about 16 area artists working in various mediums. At one of the group’s meetings, he shared with artist Lynn Myers his idea of a public art project. The concept incubated some time before the two decided to do something about it. He explains, “Part of our sincere reasoning was to do something that would bring more of a focus on Wimberley as an art community.” The result was the successful “Boo-

tiful Wimberley! public art project. The endeavor began with a committee of five, and in September of 2014, 31 giant painted boots were unveiled at the big gala, received with great enthusiasm by the Wimberley public. “It was the most people they’d ever had in the Community Center at one time,” smiles Rob. Soon, more boots will be added to the trail. “Thank God it has developed and kind of come to fruition in that re-

spect. People come to Wimberley to see the boots,” he says. The newest (15-plus) boots will be on display at the Wimberley Valley Art League’s Arts Fest at the Blue Hole April 18-19. A special unveiling, “Baring our Boots,” is planned Sunday, April 19 from 3 pm to 5 pm. Perhaps one of Rob’s greatest contributions is his desire to share his love of art while creating camaraderie within the community. He attributes his time in Carmel to teaching him how the existence of many galleries within one locale can draw people to the area. “Galleries don’t have to be in competition with each other, or try to best each other, but rather working together for the common good can and does produce more for everyone,” he says. “So as Wimberley grows, and the focus on all types of art forms increases, I would hope we see even more art galleries opening in Wimberley. Certainly it is good for the art community, but it is also good for the entire local community —the restaurants, lodging, and other retail shops in the community,” he says with a smile. FYI • Pitzer’s Fine Art is located on 13909 Ranch Road 12, just off the Wimberley Square. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from noon to 4 pm and by appointment. Fresh new dining experience at Jobell

A

By Melissa Maxwell Ball

fresh new addition to the Wimberley restaurant scene, Jobell Cafe & Bistro is an affair of the heart for owners David and Jessenia Bober. The couple is pursuing their dream at this charming eatery on Ranch Road 12 serving “simple, freshly made dishes, created with care and served in an intimate, romantic environment.” David and Jessenia relocated from downtown New York City in the spring of 2013 with “the dream of a quieter life for us and the kids and the idea of opening a restaurant,” David says.

“We ended up in Wimberley a bit by chance, having fallen in love with the area on a number of visits. Since then we have only grown more enchanted by the town and its friendly, accepting, eclectic and creative people,” he smiles. Named after their children Joshua, 8, and Isabella, 4, Jobell Cafe & Bistro is truly a family endeavor. David, a craftsman and construction manager, spent close to a year completely renovating and decorating the original building, doing most of the work himself. Guests of former businesses located in the space will find it completely transformed;

the result of hard work and good taste indisputable. Jobell Cafe & Bistro is at once warm and inviting— a beautiful medley of modern and rustic—with delightful lighting and décor, the perfect setting in which to enjoy a special dining experience. Details contributed by local artisans add to the ambience. Masterful touches include a scrolling steel railing on the front deck and a magnificent carved walnut door leading there, fabricated by local artist and craftsman Michael Wilson. Joe Waldschmidt designed and built a lovely rock water feature at the entry bridge which arches over an existing wet weather stream. Its sounds provide a relaxing backdrop for guests seated on the outdoor deck. Jessenia worked with David and the couple’s dear friend and chef, Apollo Andrade of Brazil (who came to Wimberley for six months to help open the restaurant) to develop the menu. Although largely self taught about food, “Jessenia grew up with the Cuban side of her family in Dallas, and her father is Chinese so she was exposed to many cuisines in her childhood,” explains David. “She became a voracious reader on all things food and began experimenting in the kitchen, over the years really amassing a great knowledge base and a built in knack for getting amazing flavor from everything she touched.” Both Jessenia and David were also

Jessenia creates all of Jobell’s desserts from scratch—chocolate soufflé cake, salted caramel, creme brûlée and ice creams. She also makes the paté, many of the sauces, and cures the wild-caught Atlantic salmon that is the basis for the Gravlax, in addition to managing the kitchen. The menu at Jobell consists of eclectic “French inspired” dishes, with local sourcing of fresh ingredients offering choices truly unique in Wimberley. “Our concept was drawn from the kind of food See JOBELL, page 11

We put care and craft into every aspect of the food we serve — in both the selection and preparation.” This thoughtful approach is evident in the menu choices, which are varied and pleasing. The Gravlax is served with pumpernickel, hard-boiled egg, red onion, dill mustard and crème fraiche. The satisfying Charcuterie and Cheese Slate features delicious artisanal cheeses and meats served with pagnotta (round country bread), fruit, olives, apple chutney and whole grain mustard. Apple and Sage Chicken Liver Pate and the soup of the day (made from scratch and rotated daily) round out the appetizers. The delicious Jobell Salad is a heavenly medley of local lettuce, apples, shallots, caramelized walnuts and blue cheese, served with an apple cider vinaigrette. The Iceberg Boat Salad marries tomatoes, lardons, brioche croutons, parsley and blue cheese crumbles with a delicious buttermilk blue cheese dressing. Hungry yet? Entrees are varied and distinctive. The flat iron steak, topped with herb butter and served with house made frittes (fries) is robust and satisfying, as is the Pork Chop, served with an apple reduction sauce, cider braised red cabbage and scalloped potato gratin. Other favorites include a rich, creamy Shrimp Risotto, delicate Butternut Squash Ravioli and savory Sauteéd Chicken Breast with Mushroom Pan Sauce, served atop a parsnip and pear puree with a side of fresh green beans. The Spaghetti and Marinara features house made meatballs and fresh parmesan, while the House Burger is delicious, large and truly out of the ordinary, with garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato,

red onion and house pickles on a brioche sesame bun, with a side of delicious house made fries. Dinner specials vary, based on the fresh seafood available (mussels, for See JOBELL, page 12

ore than just a store, Ply! is a welcoming and creative community of knitters, crocheters and weavers. Owner Kathy Utts opened the charming fiber arts shop in late 2013, and up until two months prior, had no idea what she was about to become inspired to accomplish. A knitter, weaver and spinner for years, Kathy says she always had a love for the fiber arts. She took a trip with her “fiber art friends” to the Santa Fe Folk Art Festival. It was a defining moment as Kathy stumbled into a small, quaint shop off the beaten path and found the shopkeeper weaving, with her beautiful woven garments showcased throughout the store. Kathy was both captivated and inspired by the display the shopkeeper had created. She recalls, “She graciously talked to me about how she did it all, and that was it. I wanted to have a hand-wovens shop.” Two months later, Ply! opened its doors just off the Wimberley Square — at the same Ply! A charming sitting area outside Ply! overlooks Cypress Creek. Photo courtesy Ply!. couches provide a comfy spot for knitters and crocheters to sit and work on projects. Outside, you’ll find a charming sitting area under a shady live oak, a perfect location to work with yarn (almost) year-round. Shoppers will also find beautiful and unique hand crafted wraps, scarves, and accessories, including felted bird houses, ornaments and bags, many of the works created by Kathy and her team. For the discerning fiber artist, Ply! focuses on natural fibers such as mohair, angora (wool and locks from long haired sheep), alpaca, silk and bamboo, and more. The alpaca is from Kathy’s own alpaca ranch down the road. She and her family—husband, Steve, and children Tom and Lilly— all take part in the shearing of the 18 alpacas every April. Talk about a personal story! Each bundle of soft alpaca yarn sold at Ply! comes with a photo of the

alpaca who donated it. Ply! also offers cotton and linen yarn. “A lot of people prefer the lightness because you can wear cotton all year round — and linen too — and they’re natural plants, but they’re not as expensive as the luxury fibers,” explains Kathy. Kathy says she tries to source locally with small businesses and artisans. She works with several great dyers locally, and attends a lot of fiber shows. For those interested in learning the fiber arts, Ply! is the place to be. Several basic knitting classes are offered each week, and a crochet class meets each Thursday. Admission is $30 for two hours, or $15 an hour. A monthly weaving class is offered, as well. Registration is $65 for the four-hour workshop (plus the cost of materials), with the option to rent or buy a portable loom. A July 2015 retreat with guest fiber artists Debra Lambert and Angela Territo— both knitters, spinners and weavers — is in the works. Debra owns “Picasso’s Moon” in Sarasota, FL, and it was she who taught Kathy how to spin. Angela is a fellow alpaca owner. She is also the owner of The Barn Yarn in Clermont, FL. Sign-ups for the workshop are now underway at Ply!. Kathy is also learning the art of Japanese weaving, Saori. Her training will take a year to complete. Saori is quickly gaining popularity, and Kathy hopes to be the first Saori instructor and dealer in Texas. “It’s a really beautiful method of weav-

I want to have that handwovens shop featuring work from local artisans. That’s my ultimate,” she explains. She is pleased with the sense of community and friendship the little shop has created. “One thing I can say I’m most proud of: we have groups now most

days, and I don’t charge for the groups, so they’re free. If someone wants to learn to knit, or crochet, or weave a specific project, they can come and pay the lesson fee of $30 and learn how,” Kathy explains. “Then they can come Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursday nights, and Sundays. Four days a week, they can come and just be with other people that love to do fiber work. And it’s growing,” she smiles. No experience is required — groups are open to anyone who wants to work with yarn. These gatherings often feature food, drink, and sometimes even musiSee PLY!, page 15

Sometimes that something just might be a husband who happens to play the saxophone or guitar. As Kathy says, “We have so much fun, we just laugh and enjoy doing what we love.” Ply is an excellent resource for anyone who loves the fiber arts, or wants to learn. If you’re not sure where to begin, just visit with Kathy or her excellent team, Cassie Orner and Saundra Lale. And remember, everyone starts out as a beginner. Working a loom, knitting or crocheting can be very relaxing, as well as rewarding. Kathy explains, “I think we all have a creative talent and a desire to express it -

and what I’ve seen with people that have come into the shop and taken the classes, is they’ve been able to create things that they never would have thought they could have done.” She adds, “They start playing with the fiber and it’s so forgiving. The worst that can happen is you just take it out and start over.” FYI • Ply! Yarn, Art & Hand-wovens is nestled in the Quarter Shops on Cypress Creek. The shop is open 7 days a week, Monday through Wednesday and Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Ply! is open late for “Thirsty Thursday,” from noon to 8 pm, and open Sunday from noon to 5 pm. agle Mountain Flag Company is a one-stop shop for all your flagrelated items. Owner Mike Young and his staff offer any and everything to cover your flag needs, from smallest of objects, to patriotic patches and desk top flags, to large commercial flags and flag pole supplies. Personalized flags and banners can be designed for a business, event or organization, even “It’s a girl” and “It’s a boy” flags. A large amount of American flags and Texas flags are in stock, and Eagle Mountain Flag Co. offers an extensive online catalog. In fact, the majority of sales are internet based. This is flag business, but so much more. Mike, who originally started his business on the road 20 years ago, has truly created a team of passionate and caring individuals who recognize and care about those serving our country and their families. He explains, “Everyone here treats all the customers on a personal level. It’s like you’re talking to a friend that you haven’t talked to in awhile.” He goes on to say, “We do a lot of business with the military, and make it a special point to let them know we appreciate their service.” The folks at Eagle Mountain Flag Co. are trying to promote the “Honor and Remember” program, whose mission is “to create, establish and promote a nationally

recognized flag that would fly continuously as a visible reminder to all Americans of the lives lost in defense of our national freedoms—military lives lost not only in action but also in service, from our nation’s inception.” Eagle Mountain employee, Andi, explains, “This flag is a visual reminder to the families that have lost people they love, that their loved one did not die in vain. It is a visual reminder of our promise as a nation that no soldier’s sacrifice goes unnoticed.” The Honor and Remember program was created by George Lutz, who lost his son George Anthony Lutz II “Tony,” in 2005. Tony was killed just 17 days into his first deployment by a sniper’s bullet in Fallujah. In the months following his son’s death, George visited many families who had suffered the same type of monumental loss, and in doing so saw a need these families shared — to know that their sacrifice was not in vain, and that their fallen would be remembered. This led George on a search for some universally accepted symbol to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. He was stunned to find out there was none, and began a crusade to change that. “We have flags for every state, we have flags for every city, every branch of See EAGLE MOUNTAIN FLAG, page 19

Creekhaven Inn

Tranquility, charm, art and relaxation

C

By Colleen Brooks

reekhaven Inn is an upscale Bed and Breakfast located on Cypress Creek near the Wimberley Square and within walking distance of the Blue Hole. Nestled on three tranquil acres at the end of Mill Race Lane, it’s a perfect setting for a romantic getaway, girls’ weekend, a reunion or retreat. Owners Pat and Bill Appleman purchased the property in 2003 in an estate sale. It was once Wimberley’s first B&B in its more glamorous days. When the Appleman’s arrived, however, the grounds and original building were in such poor condition that it took 22 craftsman and artisans working six days a week to bring their dream to fruition. After four months or refurbishment, they opened the doors and Creekhaven Inn was born. Final touches were completed the following month. Pat explains, “We knew coming in we had to do a lot of renovation. We just had faith that it was going to work.” Creekhaven Inn offers 14 rooms, two of which are suites and one that is handicap accessible. Each is beautifully appointed with plush, pillow top bedding, 400-count cotton linen, robes, and unique decor sure to suit any style. “Every room is designed to awaken your senses starting with the specially designed faux finishes by decorative artist Denice Calley, hand-made bedspreads

EAGLE MOUNTAIN FLAG, from page 19 The red background on the flag represents the blood spilled by our servicemen and servicewomen who gave all so that we could be free. The white border stands for the purity of their sacrifice. The blue star recognizes active service in military conflicts — this symbol was created in World War I, but here symbolizes service in all wars beginning with the American Revolution. The flame represents an eternal reminder that the spirit has departed this life, but burns on in the memory of all that knew and loved them. The Gold star symbolizes those that do not make it home, recognizing the value of life that was given. The folded flag symbolizes the flag presented to a family after their loss. Mike, who met George Lutz, elaborates on the symbol of the folded flag: “He told us when we met him in person in San Diego last year that people ask him all the time why the stars are not lined up properly on the flag. That’s an image of his son’s folded flag. He said, I left it that way to let everybody know none of us are perfect.” Since he created the program, George Lutz has traveled across the country to present personalized flags to families of

those who have fallen. He would like the flag to be adopted nationally. While Texas has already adopted the flag, there are many states left. One way to show support is to visit the web site, sign and share the online petition and fly the flag. The folks at Eagle Mountain Flag Co. are looking forward to the day when the Honor and Remember flag becomes a universal symbol of respect and gratitude to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. They also value their role in getting American flags where they need to go, sometimes internationally to American soldiers who are on deployment. Desiree at Eagle Mountain Flag explains their philosophy. “We don’t just sell a “product” here. It is a symbol of people’s deepest and most heartfelt beliefs and it feels good helping them display these values.” Mike smiles, nods his head, and adds, “We’re here because we are very proud of our flag, and are very patriotic.” FYI • Eagle Mountain Flag is located at 333 FM 2325 in Wimberley. Feeling adventurous? Enjoy kayaks and floats on the property down by the water. Creekhaven is just downstream from the Blue Hole — you can reach the popular swimming hole on foot by crossing the creek. The centerpiece of the beautiful retreat is an ancient bald cypress tree that is 1,000 to 2,000 years old. Bill explains this towering majestic icon, “an ancient bald cypress tree whose outstretched limbs and hollowed base appear to be welcoming its guests to share in the mysteries and special beauty of this land. Previous owners estimated the age of this tree at 2,000 years old while more recent estimates by the Texas forestry have reduced that estimate closer to just 1,000 years in age. Whatever the true age of this towering tree, we can be certain that it has been witness to many joys and peaceful moments along the crystal clear spring waters of the Cypress Creek.” There is no shortage of romance at Creekhaven Inn, and many packages available as add-ons to your reservation. Additions are priced separately. Choose from in-room couples’ massages, a fruit and cheese tray, chocolate covered strawberries and champagne, assorted truffles, and roses. Inquire about packages when booking your stay and the Creekhaven staff will work with you to ensure your complete satisfaction. Pat and Bill are also the owners of Wimberley Artist Workshops. Bill explains, “Wimberley Artist Workshops is an all-inclusive retreat experience hosted at Creekhaven Inn where a nationally renowned artist is brought in to conduct the four day workshop. Artists of all levels concentrate on improving their skills in an upscale, luxury environment while not having to worry about their meals or lodging.” Upcoming workshops will be held in May, June, November and December. Each is a four-day event and begins with a wine reception. The workshops are both educating and inspiring. Most meals are provided, massages can be scheduled at an additional cost, and plenty of relaxing downtime planned during which participants can connect with other artists. “In this setting we find that long lasting friendships are formed and the learning continues into the evening as artists socialize and share their knowledge and experiences with one another and the instructor,” Bill explains. Pat and Bill make every effort to create the perfect retreat for their guests at Creekhaven. They even offer concierge services upon request to guests. Pat laughs, “we are the concierge, as well as the innkeepers. We’re more than happy to help people figure out what to do.” FYI • Creekhaven Inn is located on Mill Race Lane, just beyond Cypress Creek. Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department

Protecting, educating Wimberley community

T

By Colleen Brooks

he Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department is responsible for covering 135 square miles of the southwestern portion of Hays County and is made up of approximately 31 volunteers, six maintenance staff, three stations, 14 pieces of apparatus and a training facility. These volunteers range from age 28 to retirement age — most have day jobs outside of the area. Firefighters responded to 348 calls last year. (They are strictly a fire department, and do not handle EMS calls). According to Chief Czichos, Wimberley resident of 60 years and the Fire Chief for 35, one-third of the calls received are for vehicle collisions. Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department is well equipped with tools to suit many situations. These include standard engines, tankers, wildland brush trucks (which they built themselves), rescue trucks, and compressed air foam systems (these add air and a wetting agent to water to expand this very limited resource).

The department also provides training to other fire departments at their Johnson training field. This field houses a fourroom burn building with garage, a fivestory ladder tower, liquid propane gas projects, and a transmission tower. Wimberley’s Volunteer Fire Department is also one of the few in the country to teach high line and radio tower rescue to the general public on their 65-foot tower. Firefighters have come from as far as Colorado and Oregon for the training. Swift-water training and vertical rescue, not only on the towers, but also on the side of cliffs are also offered. Occasionally, members of the department are called away for training. Chief Czichos says, “We do a lot of training. We teach a lot of other people.” The department is also always watching over and participating in the community. Years ago they began “Safe Halloween” at the firehouse. Chief Czichos explains, “We wanted a place where the See WIMBERLEY FIRE, page 24

kids could come and they could get candy and they could have some fun, and their parents not have to worry about whether it’s safe or not.” Last Halloween, close to 1,000 people attended. These Trick-or-Treaters enjoyed a haunted house, games, candy, popcorn and hot dogs. It was a fun night for both local families and firefighters. Every October, Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department goes to the elementary schools, daycares, and Montessori School for Fire Prevention Week. Each year’s theme is different, but the goal is always the same—to educate the kids about fire prevention, to familiarize them with what a firefighter looks like in gear, and to teach fire safety tips. The department also participates in National Night Out and visits as many subdivisions as they can. There, they hand out information to residents about how to keep their home and yard firesafe, plus distribute first aid kits and backpack reflectors for the kids. Since they can’t visit every neighborhood in one night, the Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department also hosts their own Community Night Out at the fire station. This is usually held a week after National Night Out, and these visitors receive the same information. Last year, the Sheriff’s Department was on hand, along with Hays County Fire Marshall, Hays County Emergency Management, Wimberley EMS, Public Health, VAV Search and Rescue, SWAT team and CERT. Close to 300 Wimberley residents came out and enjoyed free barbecue sandwiches, along with lots of information. The kids had fun visiting with members of the organizations and seeing their apparatus. Chief Czichos said it was a huge success and adds, “The county liked it so much they’re going to suggest it to other fire departments.” The Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department offers a “Fire Extinguisher Project” in which department members train employees how to properly work a fire extinguisher. They use a simulator that works off of pressurized water so everyone can feel comfortable in this casual, no pressure setting. The department is also willing to do this for the community if there are groups of people who would like to learn. The department also has a program that enables them to give away smoke detectors to those in need. For those

Wimberley firefighters teach fire prevention to a local home school group. Photo courtesy Wimberley VFD. who have smoke detectors but are unable to get up on a ladder to change the batteries, just call the station. A firefighter will come out to change them for you. Many elderly in the Wimberley community are appreciative of this service. The Hays County Emergency Services District No. 4 has been providing all the funding for the structures and equipment for Wimberley Volunteer Fire Department since around 1985. Chief Czichos calls them “the financial heart of the fire department.” Donations to the department are always appreciated, as sometimes things do come up that they’d like to have that are not allotted for in the budget. As far as fire safety, following are a few important tips you can implement to help keep safe: Be sure your address is well displayed. Firefighters recommend the bright blue address numbers; they say they can see them well in the dark or rain. In dry seasons, have your garden hose hooked up to an outside faucet. If you live in an outlying area, consider installing a smoke alarm system that automatically dials in to a monitoring company. That way, the fire department is notified when a situation is small and before it gets out of control. Always have a working fire extinguisher, and keep some baking soda in See WIMBERLEY FIRE, page 25

You can also register your home or cell phone with Hays County non-emergency, for reverse 911 so they can contact you in the event of a nearby emergency or evacuation. A very important tip: always obey the burn ban. If the burn ban is not on and you see smoke, consider doing a quick investigation to make sure it’s not a controlled fire before calling it in. And last but not least, always slow down and pull over to the side of the road for emergency personnel to pass, then pause to ensure a second emergency vehicle isn’t behind them. Every second is critical when someone’s life or

property is on the line. The members that make up the Wimberley Fire Department are a dedicated part of the community. Their “to-do” list is extensive when you consider the calls they respond to, the training they provide, the building of their own wildland trucks in an effort to save taxpayer money, and the community outreach they provide. They do not have much idle time. Chief Czichos laughs, shakes his head and adds, “Other than that, that’s about the sum total of us. We don’t do much.” FYI • The Wimberley Fire Department is located at 111 Green Acres Drive. Hill Country Community Band celebrates 25 years

T

By Colleen Brooks

he Hill Country Community Band has been performing for local residents for 25 years. An all volunteer band, the group originally formed in 1990 as the “Wimberley Community Band,” organized by Neal Mallard, Bob Bingham and Mary Gemple. These members started the band because Mary (now deceased) wanted a group to accompany the Wimberley Community Chorus at the Christmas show later that year. The band’s debut performance was in May 1990 along with the Wimberley High School band, followed by a July 4, 1990, concert with the chorus. The group — which is based out

of Hays County— decided to change the name to “Hill Country Community Band” to be more inclusive to those outside Wimberley. The title more accurately reflects the band’s membership, with players hailing from Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Driftwood, Kyle, Buda, Canyon Lake, Seguin, Austin, San Antonio and surrounding areas. The band performs seven to eight concerts each year, including a spring concert, autumn concert and the extremely popular Fourth of July performance. According to Les Tucker, president of the Hill Country Community Band, “The Fourth of July concert the past two years has featured the Hill Country Community Band and the Wimberley Community Choir with standing room only, resulting

The band does not perform a formal Christmas concert, instead some of the members join together and play at area nursing homes. Admission to all concerts is free, and donations are appreciated. The Hill Country Community Band is a non-profit organization locally supported through patrons, fundraising and public and band member donations. Approximately 45 musicians make up the Hill Country Community Band. Members range in age from teens to those in their eighties. Les explains, “I really enjoy the diver-

sity of ages within the organization. The blending of the new with the seasoned can be an opportunity for learning from each other — the young can learn from older members while the older members can see what has changed from their earlier band days.” He continues, “It is really exciting when we all benefit from each other and we all share in the results of our mutual efforts.” The Hill Country Community Band is directed by James Malik, who has been with the group since the fall of 2013 and studied music at the University of Oklahoma. Some members of the band have been with the group since its beginning. New members are welcome, and membership open to all amateur and professional players who love band and who have previously played a wind or percussion instrument. Band rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at First Baptist Church on Winters Mill Parkway in Wimberley. The Hill Country Community Band’s concert season runs year round, with rehearsals beginning after Labor Day and running through the July 4. The group takes off each August. Visitors are always welcome to drop in on a rehearsal and listen. The musicians who make up the Hill Country Community Band really seem to enjoy what they do, and they have fun doing it. Les explains the camaraderie, “Playing music together results in a bond of fellowship and pride individually and as a group. We all know we can count on each other to be prepared and to share in the resulting joy of performance.” The Hill Country Community Band’s next concert is Tuesday, March 31, at the First Baptist Church at 7:30 pm. The group will perform at the Community Music Festival on April 25 at 2:45 pm at Central Market on North Lamar in Austin, one of many groups participating in this annual festival. ost every European country has its own version. In France, it’s called a crepe; in Russia, it’s named a blitz; in the Ukraine, everyone knows it as a blini. Most recently, folks in Dripping Springs have started referring to it as that wonderful new food at Crepe Crazy. At their small restaurant on Highway 290, Sergei and Inna Giterman cook up the favorite food of their native Ukraine for the numbers of enthusiastic Texas crepe lovers and a steadily growing crowd of curious converts. Sergei uses his grandmother Babushka’s original recipes to create the luscious flatcakes that only the uninitiated would compare to pancakes. Crepe Crazy offers five breakfast crepes to choose from, ranging from a G’morning Parfait crepe filled with

Dripping Springs

CREPE CRAZY, from page 32 Springs, Sergei and Inna had Crepe Crazy on the road, selling at outdoor festivals from Tennessee to Texas. To get their favorite crepes regularly, Austin customers begged Sergei and Inna to set up a physical restaurant for Crepe Crazy, and the couple decided Dripping Springs was the ideal location. “We have customers who regularly drive from Austin for crepes,” reports Sergei. “They find it’s easier to get to

Dripping than to north Austin,” he says. Crepe Crazy still hits the road occasionally to set up their booth at festivals and to cater private events. Have a crazy craving for crepes? Head to Crepe Crazy in Dripping Springs. FYI • Crepe Crazy is located at 660 B West Highway 290, next to Oak Creek Cafe. Serving hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 8 am to 3 pm. For more information, call 512-524-3198 (VRS interpreter available) or visit www.crepecrazy.com.

Jams, Jellies, Dips, Gourmet Foods, Gifts & Warm Friendly Smiles From breakfast crepes to lunch and dinner crepes—sweet, savory and in between — Crepe Crazy satisfies. Photo by Janice Smith, photojems.isthephotographer.com. include the Scandinavian (smoked salmon, pickled red onions, whipped cream cheese, capers, lemon and dill), the Caprese (sliced buffalo, mozzarella cheese, basil pesto, tomatoes and balsamic reduction glaze), and the Mediterranean Medley (sun-dried tomato pesto, hummus, feta cheese, fire-roasted red bell peppers, red onions, cucumbers, and spinach with optional grilled chicken). There are also gluten-free options. Sweet crepes are classic: Caramelized Apple &White Chocolate Sauce with nuts, Brown Sugar and Cinnamon with caramel sauce, Sweet Cream Delight with strawberries and raspberry sauce, and several other decadent indulgences. November’s seasonal offering will be pumpkin crepes. In addition to crepes, Crepe Crazy’s menu features sandwiches (including a Panini), salads, a daily seasonal soup and a kids menu. There’s Nutella® hot chocolate, spiced chai latte, espresso, cappuccino, mocha and coffee/tea, along with smoothies, Moo-thies (peanut butter or Nutella® milkshakes), juices, and cold fountain drinks. Wine and beer are coming soon, says Sergei. Sergei sources many of Crepe Crazy’s ingredients from the area, shopping at farmers markets in Dripping Springs and Austin. This summer’s popular peach cobbler crepes were made with Fredericksburg peaches, he says. Service in the restaurant is incredibly quiet - in fact, silent. Sergei and Inna, along with many of their employees, are deaf and communicate through sign language and writing on an eraseable pad (along with the ever-handy pointing to items on the menu). Phone-in orders are simplified by the use of Video Relay Service (VRS) that connects customers and restaurant personnel in real time through a sign language interpreter. Seven tables inside the restaurant can seat 22 people; more can be accommodated at tables outside under the shade of an awning. Before setting up shop in Dripping
