t the Wimberley EMS annual Duck Race May 17, more than just a good time will be at stake. All those little rubber duckies bobbing their way down the Blanco River are on a mission — to save lives. Lots of good things begin when residents contribute “just $5 bucks a duck!” for their chance in the race. For 22 years now, rain or shine on a Saturday in May, hundreds of rubber ducks bearing contributors’ names have been released into the river for the race downstream. “We dump ‘em from tubs, stir ‘em up good and let ‘em go!” describes Wimberley EMS director Ken Strange of the grand start to the Duck Race. The owners of the four fastest ducks and one randomly-chosen “Lame Duck” are awarded large cash prizes. Contestants need not be present to win. Free events that day include live music showcasing local talent, complimentary food, a bounce house for the kids, and multiple raffles. New this year, nurses with the American Heart Association will be on hand to provide education and information on cardiac and stroke awareness. Proceeds from the fun-filled, familyoriented event help provide the regional emergency medical service with lifesaving extras, such as defibrillators, powerassist stretchers, GPS mapping equipment and specialized radios. Along with duck sales, sponsorships for the event help bring in the approximately $20,000 the event raises each year. In addition to the opportunity to helping the nonprofit save lives, sponsors are thanked by having their name included in a full-page ad in a local newspaper.

Wimberley EMS Duck Race. Don’t miss this year’s annual event —good fun for a good cause— May 17 at Rio Bonito Resort. Photo courtesy Wimberley EMS. The day will be a heroic scene filled with Star Flight and Airevac helicopters, fire trucks, ambulances, SWAT team vehicles, Jaws of Life and boom trucks all demonstrating their awesome life-saving powers. The fire department will be on hand to familiarize people with the use of home fire extinguishers (by spraying a live fire in a pit). A new AM Bus, which can handle up to 20 patients during a Mass Casualty Incident, (“It’s like an ambulance on steroids,” explains Ken.) will also be on display at the Disaster Preparedness Fair. Service dogs and search-and-rescue horses will provide a warm touch. A dunking booth, bounce house, face painting and barbecue add to the fun. For the past several years, Wimberley EMS has served as an overnight stopping place for bicyclists pedaling across the country with Adventure Cycling, a nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers people to travel cross-country by bicycle. Wimberley EMS has provided a number of cyclists from the US and the UK with a quiet and safe night’s respite,

camping in the station’s backyard. Wimberley EMS is a 911 emergency service that provides 16,000 people in 220 square miles of the Wimberley Valley with emergency ambulance service to hospitals in San Marcos, Kyle and Austin. Established in 1976, the local organization now employs 13 full-time paramedics and staffs two ambulances 24 hours a day. The 501(c)3 non-profit organization is funded by fees for services, taxes, and donations and is part of the Central Texas Health Collaborative. The annual Duck Race raises money for additional equipment to enhance the EMS’ services to the public. FYI • The Wimberley EMS Duck Race is May 17 from 10 am to 1 pm at Rio Bonito Resort, 13401 Ranch Road 12. Ducks entries for the race can be purchased at Brookshire Brothers Grocery in the weeks before the race, or at Rio Bonito Resort the day of the race. Admission to the race is free. Wimberley EMS is located at 220 Twilight Trail. In emergencies, they can be reached by calling 911. For more information about their services, the Duck Race or Disaster Preparedness Fair, visit their website at wimberleyems.com, or call 512-847-2526 or 512-847-1459.

Wimberley Dining

Dine like a local at popular Wimberley Cafe

W

By Bonnie Eissler

imberley Cafe is situated conveniently near a variety of shops, art galleries, historical sites and the famed Blue Hole, one of the most beautiful natural swimming areas in Texas. Robin McCullough, owner and manager of the popular cafe, says “It’s a gathering place, somewhat centered in the heart of the town, where people can drop by for coffee and breakfast and conversation.” There’s no doubt about it – Wimberley Cafe is where the locals go. A group of local women meets there every Thursday to play mahjong. It’s the kind of place where some regular patrons drop in a couple of times a day and can order “the usual” and the server will know what to bring. The cafe seats more than 100 people, including the additional outside covered dining area, which also happens to be petfriendly, so it’s not unusual to observe a

well-behaved dog enjoying the day out with his family. Wimberley Cafe stands on the historically significant site of one of the earliest buildings in the town, the Ranch House Cafe, an architectural delight that was constructed in the 1930s using more than 40 loads of colored rocks carried in from all over the state, thick polished cypress and cedar, and hand-whittled mesquite. The first Market Days were held right there on the square, in what is now the parking lot for the cafe and surrounding shops, where people sold everything from pickles and jellies to fresh vegetables, pottery, and quilts from their pickup trucks. The original Ranch House Cafe burned down in the 1960s. Rebuilt in 1967, although without the massive amounts of wood and rock, it was once more the hub of the action in town, serving as a grocery store through the 1970s, then an ice cream parlor and real estate office, and again as a cafe.

Mac and Robin McCullough moved to Wimberley in 2003, with no particular plans to open a business much less a restaurant, but the little cafe on the square was for sale and Robin soon found herself immersed in the restaurant business. “I remember thinking at the time that this is a lot like that little small-town cafe where my Dad liked to go for breakfast and coffee,” Robin says. The food at Wimberley Cafe isn’t gourmet – no arugula or smoked salmon and nary a truffle in sight – but that’s just fine with those who eat there. The food is traditional southern comfort food along with a few Tex-Mex favorites like quesadillas, migas and taco salad. Their version of tortilla soup is delicious, slightly creamier than many recipes, basically a chicken soup spiced up with jalapeno pepper and topped with strips of crispy tortilla. Customers consistently praise the chicken fried steak that’s served Texas style with peppered milk gravy. “We use the best ingredients, some family recipes,

But it’s the tried and true down-home cooking that provides the standards – burgers and fries, soups and sandwiches – that keep the patrons happy and coming back for more. Plain or toasted pimento cheese sandwiches and Frito pie are pleasSee WIMBERLEY CAFE, page 10

There’s more to the menu than gravy and biscuits and chili cheeseburgers. Healthy, low fat choices include Rio Chicken either as a sandwich or a salad with grilled marinated chicken, black beans and corn relish; a hot veggie sandwich; and a “Reubenesque” sandwich that substitutes a garden burger patty for the traditional corned beef, but keeps the delicious distinctive taste of the original with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and thou-

sand island dressing on grilled rye bread. “Our food is good,” says Robin, “ but it’s the people – the customers and the staff – that make the cafe special. My sister-in-law and son are out there greeting people. It’s a good vibe.” FYI • Wimberley Cafe is located at 101 Wimberley Square. Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 7 am to 5 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 7 am to 8:30 pm. UPSTAIRS, a lovely

ecember 2013 marked the one-year anniversary of local Wimberley home décor hotspot, Shop the Tree House, a store specializing in new, rustic, and reclaimed designs — everything from candles and copper furniture to antique mirrors, Indian headboards, and one-of-akind works of art. Housed in an adorable cottage that is equal parts old-timey and modern, a visit to the Tree House evokes exotic locales and whirlwind world travels — fitting, considering that owner and curator Melynda Einhaus is a Trinity University graduate whose college years and subsequent career with National Instruments took her all over the globe. “My love of travel and design are very much intertwined,” Melynda explains. “I’ve always had a knack for design, and even while working in finance, I was also doing interior design work for family and friends on the side.” After completing a massive design project for a Hill Country ranch house in 2007, including all the buying and decorating, she was hooked. “I’d wanted a home store since I was 15,” Melynda recalls, “and 2012 was the year I finally had the window of opportunity to open the store I’d always dreamed of having. Now, every hour that I’m awake and not taking care of my son, Ryder, I’m working on something for the store. Our goal is to keep bringing something new to Wimberley, and to create a place where our customers feel happy, relaxed, and creatively inspired.” An eclectic mix of products ensures something for every taste and budget, from fun, inexpensive gifts to higher-end upholstery. Some of the well-known brands the store carries are Voluspa, Illume, and Capri Blue candles; Old Hickory Tannery and IDS furniture; John Robshaw bedding; and Dash and Albert rugs. What really makes the store special, however, are the thousands of unique products from mom-

The product mix and design change frequently from month to month — for example, right now we work with two artists who make items out of more than 100-year-old ceiling tins reclaimed from old, demolished buildings. We love repurposing and recycling items for the home, and appreciate the art that only time can create in the aging process.” Shop the Tree House carries items for children and pets in addition to furniture and gifts; in fact, a stray cat named Cypress has already adopted the store, as well as a puppy named Pico, courtesy of WAG Rescue. The Tree House also hosts a number of fun, free events open to the public, from “sip and shop” and art days to a special See TREE HOUSE, page 15

Delightful shopping at Dovetails W By Melissa Maxwell Ball

hile the bright and cheery shop is rich with the ample colors and textures of the beautiful clothing it holds, the atmosphere is brightened even more by Dovetails’ owner Sheri Fowlie’s welcoming presence. Growing up the daughter of a five and dime owner in Camden, ME, she worked in the family store (with her two sisters and brother) and learned firsthand the importance of customer service. Sheri glows as she recounts the story of her father and the shopkeeping life he so loved. “He would always say, ‘People work 50 weeks of the year so they can come to Camden and have a good time, and we are going to give them a good time,’” she recalls. “It was all about customer service, and people loved him,” she smiles. Today, Sheri recreates that satisfying shopping experience at her own Dovetails of Wimberley, where she and her staff truly enjoy catering to the customer. When she and Stephen Dipasquale drove by chance into Wimberley in the fall of 2005, it must have been fate. The couple, tired of the long and cold winters in their native Maine, had decided to relocate, and were checking out the Austin area and a potential business opportunity in Wimberley. They noticed a “for rent” sign in the window of a charming shop

Now in its ninth year, Dovetails of Wimberley serves a devoted clientele made up of locals and those who travel some distance to find a unique assortment of fine women’s apparel, lingerie, jewelry, accessories and fragrances. We try to have a little bit of a lot of things,” says Sheri. “We have everything from $24 capris you can wear to work in your yard to $600 serape long coats that are really pieces of wearable art. And I try to have things here that you really can wear over and over.” You’ll find silks, travel wear, pajamas, things you can wear to a wedding, nightwear, lingerie and everyday great casual clothes you can mix and match. There are also plenty of hats, and lots of scarves. “I spend an entire day at market in Boston just picking out scarves,” Sheri explains. Out of the ordinary offerings include handmade embroidered cotton tops from Mexico and unique jackets and vests created from vintage handmade serapes and African mudcloth by Karen Wilkinson. A variety of jewelry—most made by local artisans—and Crabtree and Evelyn products (including powder, body lotion, bath and shower gel, and more) are also available. Three brands of jeans — French Dressing, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans and JAG — provide lots of options. “If you give me a little time, I can fit you with the perfect jean,” Sheri says. The wide array of styles and colors of clothing at Dovetails offers something for everyone although Sheri says the store caters primarily to “women ages 35-plus.” “There are several shops in town with See DOVETAILS, page 17

Two little dogs Daria, age 16, and Bailey, 12, accompany animal lovers Sheri and Stephen (who owned and operated a dog grooming business in Maine) to work each day, much to the delight of regular customers. Stephen now runs his business, Made in the Shade (offering custom shades, blinds, plantation blinds, draperies and more) from his office in the same building. Sheri makes a trip back to Maine every eight weeks or so to visit her 4-year-old grandson, Sam, her daughter and family, but says she is always happy to return to her Hill Country home in Wimberley, which she finds small, quaint and focused with a lot of diversity. “People have been just great here, very welcoming,” she says. And after eight years in business, Sheri says she still looks forward to the time she spends at Dovetails.

Stop by Taste Buds for truly Texan eats, drinks

L

By Ernie Altgelt

ocated just off Wimberley’s welcoming square is a popular downtown stop that those-in-the-know passionately patronize when appetites flair with a fired-up hungering for nothing less than authentic tastes (or sips) of Texas. That stop, aptly named Taste Buds, has made its mark by amassing and offering an incredible inventory of delicious (often spicy) packaged and bottled “gourmet” consumables, not only as diverse as the Lone Star State but remarkably, all produced within its generous borders as well. So, if it’s (the flavors of) Texas your craving Taste Buds is your saving. Originally opened in 2009 as a small retail outlet stocked with various foodrelated gifts, including neat kitchen accessories, supplemented with a modest selection of wines, Taste Buds enjoyed an enviable level of success. When the owners decided to sell in 2013, however, the business couldn’t have gone into better hands. Enter veteran grocery executive (and native Texan) Mark Beaty. With his extensive background in the victuals biz, the eager entrepreneur quickly revamped the enterprise by adding additional Texasproduced wines, beers, sodas, foods and gifts, most from smaller “mom and pop” operations that, as Mark admits, (a pop himself) are the kind of quality businesses that “I like to support.” Today, his Taste Buds overflows with offerings from all over the state ranging from peppery pickles to mellow Merlots, savory salsas to Hill Country Cabernets and, tons in between including jarred cobblers, mustards, butters, cheeses, sauces, veggies, meats, candies and more. Oh, and, did we say wine? Yep, lots of Texas wine! And, sampling, including sipping, is encouraged, as well. Taste Buds also stocks many fun related accessories such as glasses, open-

ers, holders, measuring cups, spoons and other useful “Texas-themed” must-haves. Especially notable are the beautiful, oneof-a-kind Cristi Clyburn sculptural pieces including exquisite bowls, plates, pitchers and other unique creations. Although produced “right up the road,” Cristi’s work has received acclamation from across the country and Mark feels fortunate to be able to showcase (and sell) her incredible, original works. Aside from Taste Buds’ primary “grocery” business, visitors are also encouraged to take a break from shopping and sit and enjoy a chilled glass of wine or a cold beer. To facilitate the same, the store features an accommodating bar with comfy stools and several smaller tables and chairs. On Friday afternoons, Taste Buds even has an extended “Happy Hour” running from 3 pm until closing time with reduced-priced drinks. Live music is often provided as well. Regarding Mark’s product line, many of the shop’s food items are sold under his exclusive “house brand” and available only at, or through, Taste Buds. These tasty treats were created especially for the store, often from proprietary recipes provided by family and friends. The vendors/manufacturers for the same are, as Mark emphasizes, “all in Texas” and, as his loyal clientele will attest, these special products are very, very good! Regardless of the brand, however, everything is exceptional at Taste Buds. So much so in fact, and with so much variety, custom gift baskets (each reflecting the customer’s wishes), abundantly overflowing with myriad wine and food products, have become very popular. Businesses, individuals or anyone else who needs that “special gift containing many gifts” can have Mark (and team, See TASTE BUDS, page 19

Buyers, and especially the recipients, just love ‘em.” Lastly, when asked what is the best thing about running a business like Taste Buds, Mark quickly volunteers, “Since a lot of our customers are visit-

ing Wimberley and on vacation, they’re almost all in a good mood. And, it’s contagious. As a result, there are few frowns at Taste Buds, mostly only happy smiles. But, maybe that’s the wine!” FYI • Taste Buds is open seven days a week from 10 am until 6 pm Monday through Saturday and noon until 6 pm on Sundays. ocated a few easy miles northeast of downtown Wimberley, nestling unpretentiously across 52 verdant acres of green-space, all comfortably cooled under thick canopies of mature oak, exists an exceptional academic institution renowned for nurturing, not just the young minds in its capable charge, but their bodies and hearts as well. St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, with its laudable focus on the “whole child,” continues a remarkable 25-year legacy of educational achievement by linking the core values and spirituality of yesteryear with the incredible technologies and teaching strategies of today. The commendable result of this combination is a wonderfully prepared cadre of students instilled, not only with a lifelong love of learning melded with a deep respect for others, but, of equal importance, the independence, confidence and abilities to face and conquer the many challenges that await. Founded in 1989 as an adjunct to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church (which shares the property), the nationally accredited school, offering pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade, operates as a separate 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with its own governing board of trustees comprised of clergy, congregation members, parents and Marsha Acock (Ex-Officio), the Head of School. And remarkably, its mission statement, penned a quarter-century ago, has remained the same throughout the school’s accomplished history, namely: To develop each student to his or her full potential academically, spiritually, morally, and physically.

Through educational experiences in a Christian community, each student will grow in grace and become a responsible and ethical leader. As Marsha emphatically states, “I daily see the results of our targeted goals reflected in the many and diverse smiling faces of our youngsters. We provide the tools and direction, they do the rest. And, when they leave us, they go on to do wonderful things.” A lot of St. Stephen’s success can be attributed to simple metrics: A limited enrollment, a 10:1 student/teacher ratio, a well-rounded curriculum with a special emphasis on science, math, technology and engineering but, not omitting essentials such as the arts, languages and physical development, Christian values and lastly, a highly qualified staff and faculty (supported by many treasured parents, and other appreciated, volunteers). Put all of that on a sprawling camplike campus with an excellent infrastructure including classrooms and labs, a full gymnasium, multiple, well-equipped play areas, a productive student garden (used as a classroom as well) and the adjoining church and it becomes obvious that St. Stephen’s Episcopal School isn’t your ordinary educational institution. And, while St. Stephen’s embraces many of the traditional aspects of the church school – daily devotionals, weekly religious services, etc. – when tackling the secular demands required by modern education, the school has eagerly adopted the latest in state-of-the-art learning technologies. A primary example of this is the “across-the-board” issuance of I-Pads® See ST. STEPHEN’S, page 21

This incredible research and learning tool is utilized (effectively) for all subject matter. The students and their teachers love the capability and range these powerful accessories offer and, the results have been impressive. But, excellence in academics isn’t all St. Stephen’s provides. Per its mission statement’s commitment to physical development, daily exercise is (happily) mandatory. Whether outside or in the spacious gymnasium, supervised (and well coached) students cultivate the corporal aspects of growth through participation on organized teams or with just good old “free time” play. As Marsha emphasizes, “We’re committed to a ‘balanced’ approach target-

ing the entire child, body, mind and spirit.” To this end, lacrosse was recently introduced as a new team sport but, where St. Stephen’s has really “scored” is with its outstanding archery program. In early March 2014, the school headed to Belton to participate in the Texas-wide tournament sponsored by the prestigious National Archery in the Schools organization. In the past, as a result of the competition, St. Stephen’s students have even advanced to the national finals held in Kentucky and finished extremely well. As a proud Marsha extols, “Bows and brains, imagine that? Yea, St. Stephen’s!” FYI • St. Stephen’s Episcopal School is located at 6000 Farm Market 3237 in Wimberley. ny Saturday or Sunday, you can take a day trip to a classic Italian family farm “without the $3,000 ticket and 21-hour flight,” jokes Jack Dougherty (aka “the olive guy”), owner of First Texas Olive Oil Company at Bella Vista Ranch. An avid student of ancient history, Jack patterned 27 acres of his Hill Country ranch to reflect an agricultural model developed in Rome for the captured Carthaginian soldiers after Hannibal’s defeat. Interspersed among rows of olive trees are grape vines, berry bushes, fig trees and seasonal produce beds. A frantoio (olive pressing facility), winery, tasting room and gift shop round out the full tour. First Texas Olive Oil Company was conceived in 1995 when Jack, who grew up in the orchards of California’s Santa Clara Valley and was newly transplanted to the Hill Country, realized the soil and weather here are similar to the climate of the Mediterranean. He became determined to start the Hill Country’s first successful olive orchard. The fact that no one else had ever accomplished that didn’t deter him a bit. Jack began his grand experiment in 1998, planting four varieties of olive trees on his newly acquired ranch near Wimberley. HCSun

The intense heat, scarce rainfall and thin soil on the dilapidated land he bought to restore to a working ranch were perfect for olive trees, he reasoned. “The worse the soil, the better they like it,” he contends. That December, one of Texas’ infamous “blue northers” killed most of his newly planted trees. Though the temperature range in the Hill Country is similar to olive-producing regions in California, southern Jack Dougherty, owner of First Texas Olive Oil Europe and north Africa, the Company at Bella Vista Ranch, conducts a tour. sudden drops in temperature Photo by Lake Robertson. and humidity that accompany cold fronts here create “onset freezing” that is hard for the semitropical trees to withstand, Jack explains. Fifteen years later, after extensive pruning, replanting and experimentation, Bella Vista Ranch has 1,200 flourishing olive trees that have produced 11 consecutive harvests. “Yes, you can grow olive trees in Texas,” Jack asserts, “although 15 years later, we’re still not sure of the long-term outcome. For anyone who wants to get-richquick raising olives here,” he warns, “remember one word: emu!” First Texas Olive Oil Company grows a variety of olives, including the California Mission Olive, which came to Texas in the 1600s with Spanish explorers, according to Jack. In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Swimming at Blue Hole

imberley’s Blue Hole always makes the winner’s circle of any top ten list. In 2008, it was named the second best swimming hole in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine and, two years later, Travel Leisure included Blue Hole as one of 12 best natural swimming areas in the nation. It’s hard to believe this tranquil spot is just a short walk from all the shops and cafes lining the bustling town square. For many decades, home town folks and savvy summer vacationers have plunged into the clear, cool waters of Blue Hole which today, as the centerpiece of Blue Hole Regional Park, draws in thousands of visitors from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The 126-acre regional park beautifully preserves this picturesque place for public use and is a credit to all of those who contributed their time, money, knowledge and energy to the project. There is a wonderful path along Winters Mill Parkway right to Blue Hole. Hikers can access the park from this walking path or from another path that parallels the park from Ranch Road 3237 to the intersection of Ranch Road 12. FYI • Blue Hole Regional Park is just east of the Wimberley Square on Blue Hole Lane, off Old Kyle Road near the junction of FM 3237. The park is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, then weekends only

The park is open holidays from 10 am to 8 pm. Daily admission is free for kids up to age 3, $3 for youth ages 4 to 12 years, $7 for adults and juniors 13 to 17 years. Seniors (ages 60-plus) get in for $3. Season passes are available for $30 for seniors and youth, $50 for juniors and adults. A 10-punch pass (transferable) is $24 for youth and seniors or $56 for juniors and adults. No pets are allowed. or the past 25 years, Scott Owens has been known as the Sno Cone Dude in Wimberley. Just ask any local kid what their favorite summer treat is, and one of the more than 120 flavors of shave ice at the legendary Wimberley Shave Ice will surely top their list. What makes this ice treat so special? Unlike crunchy snocones, shaved ice is fluffy and soft, and Scott uses natural and organic flavors, some sweetened with agave. And quite a few of Scott’s 120-plus flavors Scott and Nicole Owens. were created at the Photo courtesy Scott and Nicole Owens. whim of Wimberley kids. You’ll find concoctions such as Bubble Nut, Candyloupe, Drunken Monkey, The Governator, Mount Baldy, The Mominator, Blood and Guts, Sweet Tart and Worm Gutz. Of course you’ll also find the normal Cherry, Lime, Root Beer, Strawberry and other favorites. And at the end of each season, kids look forward to “Free Day,” the final day of the sno cone season, when all shave ice cones are free ’til the syrup runs out. Scott also operates his concession at Wimberley’s Lions Club Market Days through December. Photo by Melissa Maxwell Ball. Fortunately for Scott, there’s not much call for shave ice during the winter months. So, it’s the perfect time for him to enjoy his second home, Jamaica. His love for reggae and the “no problem mon,” laid-back lifestyle of the island calls him back every year December through February. In 2012, Scott met his wife, Nicole, in Port Antonio. The two were married December 2013, and now Nicole joins Scott in welcoming customers to Wimberley Shave Ice. imberley is justly renowned for its vibrant community spirit and the Wimberley Village Library is a shining example of what dedicated volunteers can accomplish. A collection of donated books, stored in the Chapel-in-the-Hills, and a common goal shared by a few civicminded individuals led to the construction of this village library in 1978 on land donated by a local benefactor. Carolyn Manning, the Library Director and only full-time library employee, says, “Our volunteers are the reason we’re able to stay open. With only nine staff members, all but one parttime, we couldn’t function without the help of our sixty or so volunteers who do so many essential tasks. They work at the front desk, catalog books, take care of the recycling, repair books, work in the garden.” The library building features a stone and wood exterior and is designed in the style of Texas homes built in the nineteenth century. This building has been

enlarged three times adding around 6,000 square feet overall, with the most recent addition now housing the Louise Johnson (an early benefactor) Fiction Area as well as Spanish and Book Club collections. “Our library is very accessible and very active,” says Kristina Minor, who is the Young Adult Librarian. The staff and volunteers currently maintain the collections of books, DVDs, and other resource materials, and present a wide variety of programs to educate, entertain and inform children, teens and adults. The library offers weekly story times for toddlers and preschoolers. For children ages 5 to 9, there’s the Magic Tree House Club which always includes a craft activity related to the selected book. “We have over 4,000 books, 200 audio books and 200 DVDs available to check out in the children’s collection,” says Kristina. “We also keep very up-todate with the latest fiction, large print, and Young Adult books,” she says, noting that checkouts from the Young Adult section are up 30% this year, a good indicator that these young people are discovering enjoyable reading material. Kristina says one frequent patron “comes here almost every Saturday and says this is one of his favorite places.” The library also offers activities and events that appeal to adults – speakers, crafting or technology classes, even a monthly cooking class courtesy of Carroll Wilson, the resident gourmet librarian. His recent classes have served up “Liz Taylor’s Favorite Chili” (a recipe said to have been a closely guarded secret for years) and “Italian Wedding Soup,” with Carroll demonstrating how to prepare the tasty dishes and present-

VILLAGE LIBRARY, from page 26 YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association) that was established in 2007, with the goal of helping teens learn how to use technologies available at the public library. The week is fun as well as educational. “One of our projects is to break down a lot of old electronics – televisions, computers, VCRs – and use the pieces to make artistic sculptures or jewelry or other decorative objects.” Carolyn explains that the advances in technology have shifted the focus at libraries around the country. “Because of changing technology, librarians are presenting programs and providing services using this new technology to bring people into the library,” she says. Kathleen Goodson, the Programs Manager, says, “There are many great online resources, that some people may not be aware of, to access in the library – for example, digital copies of magazines, continuing education courses, and

Atomic Training.” This is a huge database that allows access to video training tutorials on hundreds of the most popular software, from Access and Acrobat to Windows Moviemaker and Wordpress. “We also have iPads, mini Ipads and Kindles to check out and use at the library,” Kathleen says. Working with these tablet computers and electronic reading devices at the library, where assistance is readily available, offers a good opportunity for some “low tech” folks to learn how to use the handy gadgets they’ve received as gifts from their more plugged-in, tech-savvy younger relatives. Taste of Ireland in Celtic Seafare’s smoked salmon

Y

By Laurel Robertson

ou can’t get any more Irish than the artisan smoked salmon created by Celtic Seafare in Dripping Springs. Smoked salmon is to the Irish what barbecue is to Texans, explains native Dubliner Sebastien Caillabet, owner and executive chef of Celtic Seafare. Though his Irish accent has faded in the years he’s lived in the U.S., his love of Irish seafare motivated him to launch his successful new enterprise. Each week, Sebastien receives more than 120 pounds of fresh salmon flown in from Scotland, British Columbia and Alaska. To create his many varieties of cold- and hot-smoked salmon requires a several-day process of salting, refrigerating, flavoring and smoking in his large state-of-the-art AFOS smoker, im-

ported from England. In an interesting mélange of global/local sourcing, Sebastian flavors his imported salmon with herbs, cheeses, nuts and honey from local producers. Celtic Seafare products all proudly bear the Texas Department of Agriculture’s “Go Texan” label. The finished product is quickly snapped up by eager customers at Celtic Seafare’s booth at Barton Creek Farmers Market and by a rapidly-growing clientele that have discovered his (unadvertised) production kitchen and small tasting room in Tiger Center on Highway 290 in Dripping Springs. Though he initially envisioned the Dripping Springs facility only as his production kitchen with limited retail sales, Sebastien has finally acquiesced to repeatSee CELTIC SEAFARE, page 34

Weekend dinner patrons can expect to find a Prix Fixe menu such as this one from a recent weekend: smoked salmon caprese (featuring a local olive oil); warm chevre salad (using local Pure Luck Organic chevre); beef bourguignon with carrots, baby onions and a side of herbed orzo; Scottish salmon baked in puff pastry with spinach, feta and chive aioli and new potatoes; Texas pecan and praline chocolate cake with a whiskey orange cream. Diners are encouraged to bring their own libations – glasses provided. “I do it mainly for fun,” attests Sebastien about his weekend menu, “and to have a break from smoking and packaging salmon.” His goal of keeping the weekend dinner business small may be an uphill battle – already reservations are outstripping table space. “Take home is available,” he Artisan smoked salmon created at Celtic suggests.
