Hill Country Collectables By Bonnie Eissler
A
collaboration between art director Terry Grisham and Dylan Chasen of Wimberley Jewelers brings together top artists in multiple media and stunning Native American jewelry under one roof in Hill Country Collectables. The handcrafted art, sculpture, furniture, and jewelry represent some of the best artists working in the southwestern United States and Texas. Terry, longtime manager of The Art Gallery on Wimberley Square, brings expertise and experience to this new endeavor. He can answer any questions visitors have about the artists, from biographical details to their different styles, techniques, and subject matter. Some of the gallery’s featured artists include George Kovach, Manuel Garza, Jill Robinson, Jimmy Longacre, Jeff Gant and Calvin Begay. George Kovach is a landscape artist who lives near Abilene, Texas. A featured artist for many years, first at The Art Gallery and now at Hill Country Collectables, Kovach’s award-winning works have an powerful emotional quality. His paintings are widely known and collected and some of this images have been commissioned for calendars and greeting cards. He paints a lot of bluebonnets, but there is nothing boring about his landscapes. Manuel Garza, another top-selling artist, paints with such meticulous detail that even the tiniest details stand out, from the individual flower petals to bird feathers and barbed wire. Look for the tiny trademark redbird that he includes somewhere in every picture. Kovach and Garza are both close to 80 years old now and each artist has perfected his craft. Their new creations are eagerly anticipated and greatly admired. Like Kovach and Garza, Jill Robinson is an awardwinning artist. When she first visited the shop, just to look around, Dylan had no idea that she also created beautiful works of art until she brought around some of her amazing gourds. Jill has been crafting fine gourd art for 10 years and taught basket weaving for thirty years. Starting with the natural gourd, she uses many different techniques

that include carving, inlay, wood-burning, painting and/or weaving as the inspiration guides her for each unique piece. Jimmy Longacre is a landscape artist who often paints plein air, which means he paints outdoors, drawing his inspiration from nature. His interpretations, design and color combine to present a poetic experience for the viewer. Jimmy was born in Puerto Rico, moved to San Antonio at an early age, and makes his home today near Dripping Springs. Calvin Begay uses the Navajo inlay techniques in his handcrafted jewelry that is prized by collectors throughout the United States. His work has been featured in Southwest Art Magazines and Arizona Highway. Calvin designed his first piece of jewelry at age 10, using precious metals and stone. Dylan has worked for many years in the fine jewelry business, and was based in Fredericksburg before coming to See HILL COUNTRY COLLECTABLES, page 9

Wimberley 10 years ago. His specialty and greatest passion is for Native American artists and designs. He says, “Over the years I’ve met some phenomenal artists, mostly in New Mexico.” What is so special about their jewelry? According to Dylan, “There’s nothing quite like it, how they cut the stones and work with the metals – no one in the world can do the detail the way they do, the stone inlaid into stone.” The work is even more impressive, he says, because they don’t have costly machinery, instead they do everything with only a few simple tools and the results are beautiful, elegant and contemporary. As for turquoise, the stone that many people associate with Native American jewelry, Dylan says he has to be very selective with the turquoise mines. “Most have closed, there may be three in the whole country and they’re not producing the best.” Still, there are some beautiful squash blossom necklaces with turquoise. A silver butterfly necklace in the shop was handcrafted utilizing the Navajo method of sand casting instead of wax casting, so that it’s truly one of a kind. The Navajo “pearls” in the chain are made of silver and are hollow, making them surprisingly lightweight, so that even a highly ornate squash blossom necklace isn’t uncomfortably heavy for the wearer. The only way to fully appreciate the quality of the fine art, wearable art, and artistic home furnishings at Hill Country Collectables is to personally visit the store to learn about the

E
ddie and Kimberly Dwyer opened their “traditional American cuisine with a twist” dining establishment in August 2018. The serendipity of Kimberly rhyming with the name of the town made naming the restaurant a foregone conclusion. Items on the menu, such as Kimberly’s Giant Pretzel and Dr. Miller’s BLT, are named for “family and friends who are dear to our hearts,” as an extra touch of warmth and whimsy for this family-oriented restaurant. Eddie has a lifetime of experience working in the restaurant industry. His dad was in the business of revitalizing restaurants which gave Eddie a valuable perspective about the qualities that make a business successful. “In South Padre, we had a full commercial bakery, a prime steakhouse restaurant and a catering service,” Eddie says, “we made everything from scratch.” Besides working in the family business, Eddie spent five years with Darden Restaurant Inc., an American multi-brand restaurant operation headquartered in Orlando, Florida. With more than 2,000 restaurant locations (including Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Olive Garden, Chili’s, Longhorn Steakhouse among many others), Darden is the world’s largest full-service restaurant company, and an ideal place to learn everything there is to know about the business. “My job was menu creation,” Eddie says, “every quarter there were new menu items and changes to the menus at the different restaurants.” His experience shows: the menu for Kimberly’s in Wimberley includes familiar favorites as well as plenty of intriguing new taste temptations. Eddie and Kim visited Wimberley one weekend, explored the area around the square, went home and discussed possibilities for opening a restaurant there. Although they live in San Antonio, they decided Wimberley would be a good location, with lots of activity in the downtown area, locals as well as tourists. Eddie says he buys local Texas products whenever possible. “My brother-in-law, Mike, has a farm and ranch in the Valley, and is a good connection for this,” he says. Mike is also one of the family members who has a menu item (Chopped Steak) named after him. Traditional American foods like hamburgers, pasta salads, waffles and shakes always have a little extra something – barbecue chicken and avocado in the pasta salad, an egg (if you want it) on the burger, homemade sauces and salad dressings – that makes them extra special. Fresh seasonal produce and meat, consistency and quality control are all top priorities. The burgers and fries served at Kimberly’s are exceptionally good and highly rated by customers. “We use only the best quality beef,” Eddie says, “fresh, never frozen, and the fries are hand-cut.” See KIMBERLY’S IN WIMBERLEY, page 11

And if you don’t eat beef, don’t despair. At Kimberly’s, for burgers and for a variation on the taco salad, there’s the “Impossible Burger,” a tasty option for vegans and vegetarians. Dr. Miller’s BLT sounds too good not to try, and it’s definitely a twist on a traditional favorite. The bread is actually jalepeno cornbread cooked in a waffle maker, spread with chipotle butter and piled high with spring mix, tomato, bacon, and avocado. Kim and Eddie have a commercial kitchen in their home and have always enjoyed entertaining and cooking for their friends and family who often asked, “When are you going to open your own restaurant?” Eddie says, “Many of the recipes are our own personal recipes that we tweaked to fit what we’re doing here.” From starters like the giant pretzel or avocado caprese toast to a really crazy shake of a dessert, Kimberly’s in Wimberley is a great new place to eat downtown. The current menu selection has a lot to choose from and additional items are yet to come. Eddie says with a smile, “A lady gave me some good ideas for breakfast items – if we follow through with the idea, we’ll name it after her.” Kimberly’s in Wimberley is located at 303 Wimberley Square, Wimberley, TX 78676. T
he Wimberley Valley Art League (WVAL) continues to grow and to support Hill Country artists, generating an ongoing interest in art within the community. This nonprofit organization was created by a handful of local artists in 1990 and now boasts more than 200 talented members. League members are active in Wimberley, volunteering at Lions Club Market Days and are also responsible for the Art in Public Places program. “Our goal when we started the program was to share the wonderful artwork of our members and give them the opportunity to sell their work, but also to expose people of every age and every walk of life to original works of art by local artists,” explains Jan Fitzhugh, league president. You can see these art installations around town at Wimberley Community Center, the Village Library, Wimberley Medical Center, Wimberley Visitor Center, at the office of Dr. Eric Price and Ozona Bank. The league also hosts monthly demonstrations and ongoing workshops, in addition to six juried shows a year, an annual studio tour, and a annual fall show and sale. The spring event has evolved into their biggest yearly, Arts Fest.
In just 11 years, Arts Fest has grown from a dozen local artists sharing their works on the Wimberley Square to a large weekend event with more than 100 juried artists in attendance from across the country. This year’s Arts Fest will be April 27-28 at The Waters Point, located on Ranch Road 12 between the Wimberley Square and the Blanco River bridge. Expect an abundance of art, continuous live music, food, drinks, and a classic car show sponsored by the Wimberley Classic Car Club. The Water’s Point is a beautiful outdoor venue that provides ample shade under its outdoor structures and pecan grove – a truly enchanting setting for this rain or shine event. Attendees can expect to see art in a variety of mediums — sculpture, paintings, jewelry, furniture and pottery. “We’re excited to be host to a number of world class artists from all over the country,” Jan explains. “Many of them have joined us in the past and are coming back again this year.” Admission to Arts Fest is free, and dogs (on a leash) welcome. Wimberley Adoption Group (WAG), the local animal rescue group, will be on-site with dogs available for adoption. The league’s annual studio tour is held the last weekend

in September. Artists throughout the Wimberley Valley open their studios to the public, share their inner sanctum and talk about their creative process with tour participants. The last week in October, WVAL hosts the annual show and sale at the Wimberley Community Center. This popular event begins with an elaborate reception complete with wine and hors d’oeuvres Friday evening at 5 pm, and continues until 8

The Wimberley Valley Art League always welcomes new members. Membership is made up of art supporters and artists, and no one needs to be juried in. Jan smiles, “We’re a very friendly, inclusive group and we’re always happy to welcome new members to our midst. You’ll never feel like a stranger with this welcoming group.” Annual league membership fees are $35 for individuals or $50 for a family/couple. Members meet at the Wimberley Community Center at 14068 Ranch Road 12 the second Monday of every month (excluding June, July and August). Meetings begin at 6:30 pm, are open to the public and typically include a guest speaker and art demonstration. Many arrive early for snacks and conversation. “The Wimberley Valley Art League provides opportunities for our members to socialize with, and learn from one another throughout the year,” Jan adds. “You’ll hear regularly from those who are members that they love the camaraderie that the league fosters through their events.” You can learn more about the Wimberley Valley Art League by visiting www.wimberleyartleague.org. Jean’s Antique Mall discover

P
etra Drumwright, owner and proprietor of Jean’s Antique Mall, sits on her latest acquisition, a beautiful rosewood chair upholstered in pink velvet. She points to the couch nearby that’s been reupholstered in a 1980s era printed fabric and was brought to the store along with the chair. “It’s better to upholster furniture like this in a solid color and classic fabric like velvet,” she says, “the resale value is higher.” Petra grew up in Galveston, a city steeped in history and with a lot of history and a good selection of antiques. She collects things, as might be expected, and has a particular fondness for antique and vintage dishes. Many years ago, her husband threw out a barrel of treasured dishes when they moved because they didn’t have the space for them. Petra laughs and says, “I’ve been filling up that barrel ever since – lots and lots of barrels.” Petra has been at the helm of the store for five years. Jean’s Antiques is named for Melba Jean Williams, who still lives nearby. “She and her husband were both teachers,” Petra says, “they opened the antique store in the 1980s.” Today, the store features 20 vendors selling a wide variety of items, including furniture, jewelry, antiques, vintage clothing, pocket knives, dolls, collectibles, lots of knickknacks and unusual one-of-a-kind finds. An antique should be at least 100 years old while vintage is less than that, often between 25 and 50 years old. To make things even more complicated, there’s a retro category that includes outdated styles that are fashionable once again. Antiques run in cycles. What’s in fashion one year is out the next. items that a lot of young people consider to be antiques. “Midcentury kitchen items are popular,” she says. Collecting dishes, whether blue and white china, brown pottery, or depression glass can be a real passion. A particular pattern or dish is like a portal to another time – a special wedding gift, a treasured platter or sugar bowl that’s been passed down through the generations, a cookie jar that’s just like the one your grandmother had. Collectors of antique and vintage plates and dishware will find much to appreciate at Jean’s. Of the many different Chinese inspired landscape patterns, there is none dearer to the hearts of blue-and-white collectors than the Blue Willow, a transfer print created and mass produced in England in 1780. There are hundreds of documented makers in Great Britain and around the world, but to be a true Blue Willow pattern, there must be willow trees, a fence, a boat, a teahouse or pagoda, a bridge with three men on it, and two birds in flight. The elaborate design has inspired romantic fables and various stories including a comic opera in 1901, a silent film in 1914, and a beloved children’s novel in 1940. Jean’s Antiques has many different types and colors of dishes, including a variety of blue-and-white patterns. Petra sometimes takes items on consignment, but she

usually purchases them. “I used to shop around the markets,” she says, “but I don’t need to do that much now because so many people are regulars and they bring things to me,” – like the rosewood chair covered with pink velvet. J
ust a peek into In Style Accessories and you’ll realize, this isn’t your ordinary shoe store. Owners Larry and Kristi Broadway have created a unique experience where women (and men) can shop for stylish comfort shoes, without having to sacrifice fashion. Larry has been in the shoe business for 55 years and has owned several shoe stores during that time. He opened his first shoe store in Harlingen in 1979, followed by McAllen in 1984. From there, he left Texas and headed to Asheville, NC where he opened several stores - including his claim to fame, the first Brighton concept store in the U.S., in 1997. Larry laughs, “When I opened it, most people didn’t know what Brighton was. It was a bit ahead of its time.” Over time, Larry felt a draw back to Texas. “North Carolina was so different from what I was used to, he explains. “I felt like a fish out of water.” So, after careful consideration, he decided
on Austin. There, he took some time to consider where to hang his hat. “He kept coming to Wimberley,” Kristi explains. “Something about Wimberley kept calling him back.” Larry settled into Wimberley and started In Style Accessories with only one brand of shoe. He laughs, “It was Portania, which ironically, is no longer in business.” From there, his business has grown to over 35-40 different brands of comfort European shoes. Larry explains, “We’re a specialty store, not your cookie cutter shoe store. We carry unique brands, and we pride ourselves in carrying things you won’t find in department stores.” See IN STYLE ACCESSORIES, page 22

Kristi laughs, “Every type of shoe we select has been tried on. You could have the cutest shoe in the world and if it doesn’t fit right, you won’t sell it.” Larry adds, “We’re buying shoes for all women. We’re buying what we think the customer wants.” Kristi originally came from a health and fitness background when she decided to put that aside to join her husband in the business. “He was working so hard,” Kristi explains. “We decided I was going to come on board to help him out.” She laughs, “Both of us are now working six days a week. Each year we’ve had growth, for 18 years.” In a time where there are very few independent shoe stores, Kristi and Larry have regulars that come from all over Texas just to shop at their store. Larry explains, “We’re a destination now. We get women who come once or twice a year from all over Texas, even Houston. They say there’s not anything like that there. We hear this repeatedly.” In Style is an open stock store, so shoppers can try everything on at their own pace. Kristi smiles, “It gives them a chance to have fun, try on things, and play. It’s like having your own closet to play in. When customers walk in, I say, ‘Welcome to Paradise!’ It’s not uncommon to have women in here for a couple of hours.” Larry explains, “I think that concept of openstock really works for us. We’ll give you as much service as you want, but if you don’t want it, we’ll leave you on your own. Everyone who works here has product knowledge. There’s no pressure, no one is on commission.”

“We’re a trendy store,” Larry says. “We have our own unique personality here, and there’s really not another store that I know of that has the selection of merchandise we carry. We’ve been told by so many customers that they think this is the best shoe store in Texas. We’ve found our niche.” Kristi reflects at In Style’s beginning 18 years ago and smiles, “I’m very, very proud of my husband and what he’s accomplished.” In Style Accessories is located at 107 Old Kyle Road in Wimberley, just a few doors down from I’noz. T
he Wimberley Square welcomed a new boutique last spring with mother and daughter team Julie and Ashley “Stella” Knoblauch. Libelula — which translates to dragonfly in Spanish — is a tribute to their beloved Dustin, who passed away suddenly in 2009. “My brother was always so full of life,” Ashley recalls. “He walked in a room and everyone knew he was there. He had tons of friends and was very goofy and funny. He wanted to make everyone laugh and if he didn’t, he’d just try harder until he did.” Dustin passed away just eight days before his 27th birthday after an automobile accident. The healing process brought his mother, Julie, to Wimberley. “It was a peaceful place to move to,” she recalls. “We searched the hill country, and something brought us here. There are so many beautiful oak trees. It’s full of animals with a variety of deer. Dustin’s patron saint is St. Francis, the saint of animals. I feel my son here.” The inspiration for her candle line, “Dust in the Wind,” came from a series of events that occurred after Dustin’s passing. The first was a red dragonfly who started visiting her pond. Julie smiles, “Red was Dustin’s favorite color. This dragonfly visited us every day and would let us get close to it, take photos and videos.” Ashley affirms, “We felt Dustin. This dragonfly wasn’t scared of us, no matter how close we tried to get.” After a few months, the dragonfly suddenly disappeared. Julie pleaded to see it one last time. The dragonfly reappeared, circled around her, and then was gone. Ashley recalls, “It reappeared in times of significance — like when Dad had his surgery, and it landed on his truck antenna. That was Dustin’s sign to us that he was always going to be with us. So, then it became our symbol.” As Julie was walking down gallery row in Santa Fe, NM, one evening, she saw a boutique named Dragonfly and, as she turned to the opposite side, a sign that read “Dust in the Wind.” Julie affirms, “Dragonflies symbolize change and are often believed to be visitors.” Her desire to keep her son’s memory alive through the light of a candle and the memories of those who knew him inspired her to create her Dust in the Wind candle line. Dust in the Wind Candles clothing when her current storefront became available. She told her husband, “I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but it just feels right.” She called Ashley in San Antonio, and her daughter was ready to take the leap. “Since the dragonfly represents new beginnings, change and free spirit, we decided to name the store Libelula,” Ashley recalls. “The perfect day to open the business was on March 23, the day Dustin was born.” Inside Libelula, you’ll be greeted with warmth, smiles, and a variety of colorful merchandise that sparks positivity – Bohemian-style clothing for men and women, greeting cards, purses and totes, swimsuits, coverups, decorative pillows and prints, fair-trade merchandise, and a collection of beaded and inspirational jewelry. Ashley explains, “After my brother passed, we found a tiny piece of paper on his dresser that he had written on that said, ‘Diminish your fear and your weakness shall follow. Overcome your weakness and you shall not know fear.’” They incorporated the message into a beautiful copper bracelet, and it is the motto by which they live. Their Dust in the Wind candle line offers unique and refreshing scents, different from many of the candles currently on the market. Julie laughs, “Dustin’s candle is our ‘signature’ candle, and it’s got three scents – ‘Jamaica me crazy,’ vanilla, and whiskey.” The boutique is also an ideal place to grab a last-minute gift, and the lad are happy to gift package your purchase. Dragonfly lovers will find cute merchandise in this free spirit boutique. Julie laughs, “We’ve actually had dragonflies fly into the store.” Libelula has served as a healing place for mother, daughter, and visitors alike. As Julie explains, “We often get dragonfly gifts from visitors. We’re very touched! Some of the people who come in have lost a child or a spouse or a loved one, and we can help them or inspire them. It has turned out to be a healing place for many of us.” Julie and Ashley reflect on their experience in Wimberley. “We love what we do here, and Dustin is with us all the time. Wealth isn’t what we have gotten by opening the store. All the money in the world doesn’t mean anything compared to the richness we have received here — connecting with people, being able to open our hearts, and being touched by their stories. That is the greatest gift of all!” Julie puts her arm around her daughter and smiles. “We are here to help others who have lost someone, too. We give a whole lot of hugs in this place,” she says. “It’s comforting, not only to them, but to us. We are doing okay. wners Matt and Jennie Horvath will celebrate the first anniversary of their garden center, Wimberley Gardens, in March 2019. Looking back over the previous year, it seems they were destined to be here at this location. Matt and Jennie were sitting outside the food trailers across the road adjacent to what was then the site of Miss Mae’s BBQ. Matt says, “We were thinking about what a nice garden center it would be.” This was more than just daydreaming over lunch. Just eight months later they got word that the building was coming available, and it wasn’t long before their dream became a reality. At every step of the process, the general consensus was “This is what you two need to do.” Matt is a natural for the business, having worked in a local family-run nursery in Pennsylvania for nearly 20 years and as manager for 10 years. For several years, he has owned and operated a successful landscaping company in Wimberley. “I also worked in corporate America for six or seven years,” Matt says, “and found out that wasn’t for me.” At Wimberley Gardens, he’s where he belongs, doing what he loves and what he does best. As for Jennie, who is a hair stylist by profession, she also helped Matt with the landscaping business and has always loved gardening. Wimberley Gardens provides the couple a way to combine their landscaping services with offering top quality plants and gardening supplies to their customers. Once the property was theirs, the work began in earnest. “We worked for two months, seven days a week, 10 hours a day.” They cleaned inside and out, opening up the spaces – the booths were the last to go — to transform the long-time Texas barbecue eatery into a spacious bright and colorful interior full of light and plants and garden accessories. “Friends and family were lifesavers during this time,” Jennie says. Most of the growers Wimberley Gardens work with are nearby in Austin, San Antonio and Marble Falls. Matt sought out the best sources in the area for providing plants of exceptional quality. “I always like to use native plants,” he says, “and native organic vegetables, herbs, organic soils, organic fertilizer and pesticides.” Because native plants are already adapted to a specific climate and region, they have better resistance to local weather and require less maintenance. are best for the challenges of gardening in the hardscrabble landscape of the Texas Hill Country. The gazillion rocks, scorching summer heat, occasional droughts and floods and a large roaming population of deer and other wildlife are not insurmountable obstacles to having a beautiful garden. Matt believes it’s important to educate people about drought tolerant native plants. He says, “Of course, the million dollar question is ‘what will the deer stay away from?’ and there are some plants that are better than others for that particular problem.” Jennie says, “We recently got in a new line of unique garden gift items, pottery and baskets for your plants, and an array of indoor houseplants, hanging baskets, succulents and herbs.” She is especially excited about a new line of Wimberley Garden spring candles she created and blended exclusive to the store. ew owners Don and Helena Hauk have been at Creekhaven Inn for a mere three months, and they’ve already added two new suites downstairs and a romantic petite spa with side by side massage tables on the third floor. They’re freshening things up with paint, new linens and color schemes, modernizing with new high speed wireless network, and adding other subtle personal touches to décor and amenities. Creekhaven Inn, tucked away in a secluded location on Cypress Creek, is still the same magical place it’s been for many years. The ancient bald cypress tree “Monarch” still reigns supreme as the natural centerpiece of the property. Although this idyllic setting seems far removed from the outside world, Blue Hole Regional Park and Corral Theater are only five minutes away, and a 10-minute walk will take you to the shops, restaurants and art galleries on the Wimberley Square. Don and Helena love everything about this property, and their plans, some already underway and others yet to come, will only enhance the enduring appeal of this rural retreat. floor plans, paint and design themes, and luxury features such as fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and private decks or balconies. Helena and Don bought the inn complete with furnishings which included a number of vintage, antique and “statement” pieces, like two massive four panel wardrobes, antique armoire, tables and paintings. One of the new suites is Creek House, which was the original 1930s era fishing cabin on the property. This suite has rustic wood floors with antique nail heads, multiple windows and a private porch for a good view of the creek. Creek House has a full kitchen, making it an excellent choice for longer stays and for those visitors who like to prepare a few meals on their own. The other new suite, the Ranch Room, has a Western theme and was formerly the innkeepers’ living quarters. Although Helena plans to move eventually toward serving a plated breakfast, at this time the inn’s guests can enjoy a buffet style meal that features an egg-based breakfast casserole, fresh fruit, pastries, cereal and toast. “Sometimes we’ll have waffles or a French toast casserole that’s more like a bread pudding,” Helena says. They also serve delicious local organic coffee, fresh-roasted in small batches from D’s Roastery. Helena’s plan is to incorporate items from local and other Texas Hill Country businesses and artists into the inn’s décor and amenities when possible. “We have Hummingbird Farms (near Johnson City) lavender bath products in the suites and throughout the main house,” she says, “and there is a Rancho Deluxe poster, chair and pillows purchased from the Old Mill Store in the Ranch Room.” Her passion for hospitality began when she was 14 years old and working as a volunteer at the Chamber of Commerce in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce in Kyle and today both she and Don work in banking as SBA lending experts helping small business owners gain access to capital through SBA loan programs. Before her parents moved to Texas when she was 15, Helena lived in a small farming town south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Don spent his early years in Idaho and living along the west coast in California and Washington. Although they first met in Buda where Don was one of the salesmen who worked with her dad, it would be 10 more years before the couple reconnected. Today, they’re married, the parents of two young children, and new innkeepers living their dream. Helena says, “ I went to three different high schools in three different states and what I want now is to settle in a home and be a part of a community.” Her experiences with event planning, working in the hotel industry, and as a small business lender reinforced and kindled her enthusiasm for helping people reach goals they didn’t think they could reach. “This is also about our dreams, as well as the desire to give other people an experience that can make great memories,” she says. USEFUL NUMBERS & INFORMATION
In the 1850s, Wimberley had a grist mill, tannery, store, shoe shop, and a school that was also used as a church and meeting hall. By the 1870s, it also had a blacksmith. By 1880, the Post Office was set up. By 1900, nine houses were built around the square. By the 1920s, the county finally started to improve roads in and out of the village (the road to San Marcos was paved in 1921). By 1939, electricity was available. The population tripled from 1880 to 1947, based on estimates by the Post Office, to a little more than 400 people.

Making a difference with local youth
Camp Good Sam By Colleen Brooks
T
he Wimberley Community is known for its “Wimberley Strong” spirit and help thy neighbor attitude. Through Good Samaritan Community Services, they’ve also been able come together to improve the lives of lowincome families in Hays County. Camp Good Sam Wimberley was established in 2014 when a few members of the Wimberley ISD School District and St. Stephen’s Church recognized a need within the community for children participating in the free or reduced lunch program. Marby Shaw, Camp Good Sam Manager, explains “We wanted to level the playing field for all youth and make sure our kids aren’t having that summer slide. We wanted to give them opportunities to build on what they learned throughout the year. The community heard what we did in other cities and said, ‘We need to have that here.’”

Good Samaritan Community Services is based out of San Antonio and offers Camp Good Sam in Brownsville, Sonora, Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio. They do this through community involvement, volunteers, and donations. Marby explains, “It’s really the community coming together and putting this together for the youth of Wimberley. The district and the volunteers from the community have been so instrumental in how well the camp has done.” This year’s camp is scheduled June 3 – July 12 at Scudder Primary school in Wimberley. Camp times are Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided. Any child entering the first through fifth grade who is receiving free or reduced lunch is welcome to enroll. “Every year we pick a book theme, and we essentially bring that book to life,” Marby explains. “It’s a big deal for the See CAMP GOOD SAM, page 34

kiddos and the staff. This year we will have a Percy Jackson book theme. Everything in the six-week camp including the field trips, curriculum, and the camp decorations will be centered around this.” Campers begin each day with breakfast followed by a giant pep rally they call “community time,” which builds camaraderie. Marby explains “It starts their day in a positive way. They learn dances, we do fun competitions or cheers, and sometimes the staff even competes. We just celebrate another day.”

Specific learning goals bridge and build upon what the kids learned during the school year. Children attend field trips, specifically a college tour, so they can have the expectation of attending college. They also participate in service projects to understand the significance of giving back to the community. A guest speaker will get them thinking about what they might want to be when they grow up. In addition, the camp engages the family to ensure they are part of the child’s learning. At the end of six-weeks, a culminating event is held, celebrating each child’s participation in the program. Camp Good Sam also provides opportunities for ten kids ages 10 - 15 from each camp to attend Camp Capers in Waring, TX, the week after Camp Good Sam, where campers have a chance to connect with kids from all the other Camp Good Sam groups in Texas. Marby smiles, “Rick Riordan attended Camp Capers as a kid and based Camp Half-Blood on Camp Capers. So, this year, it will be extra exciting for the kids.” This will be the camp’s sixth summer in Wimberley. Traci Maxwell, Camp Good Sam Wimberley Advisory Board Chair, explains, “Every child is not alike, nor do they learn at the same capacity or speed; Camp Good Sam helps to close the gap and prevent the “summer slide” we see in learning for some children.” “The best part is, all the learning that is happening over the summer is disguised as fun for them all, tied to a great story and in an environment that not only feeds their brain but feeds them physically as well,” she says. “A tall order but we have been successfully doing this for the past five years and hope to continue for some time. im Moore is a native Texan who grew up in the oil fields of north Texas near Wichita Falls. After attending school in Lubbock, he and his wife, Brooke, spent 15 years in the western Colorado town of Paonia, where Tim was minister for the Paonia Church of Christ. everend Jim Denham and Molly moved to Wimberley from South Padre Island where Jim served as resident Chaplain for Chapel by the Sea since 2008. From 1999 to 2008, Reverend Denham had previously served as Senior Pastor for the Chapel in the Hills in Wimberley. Jim has also served as Director of Chaplaincy Services for the Seton Hospital System, Pastor of Austin Heights Baptist Church and Hospice Chaplain for Girling Home Hospice. Jim has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Texas in Austin, a Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY, and Clinical Pastoral Education from Baptist Hospital, San Antonio. “Let’s jump start the joy and happiness and see what God can do with our efforts to be his followers at our special place to worship, our church, Chapel in the Hills,” says Reverend Denham.
