Road Trip Time By Alyssa Walker With so many attractions in San Antonio, your family may not feel the need to experience other states, but exploring new places can be an exciting adventure and allows your child to broaden their knowledge about the world around them. This summer, pack up a few suitcases and gather into the car- it’s road trip time! New Mexico If your family loves nature, New Mexico may be the perfect destination. The Carlsbad Caverns is a national park that has approximately 117 underground caves! Guided, self-guided and specialty tours are all available. The White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico may cause you to rethink your definition of nature. With 275 square miles of white sand dunes and some sand dunes reaching 60 feet in height, you won’t want to leave your camera in the car. While traveling through New Mexico you many pass a familiar town called Roswell, the city where the 1947 UFO crash supposedly happened. Don’t worry, you won’t find aliens walking through the city, but you will find the International UFO Museum that features exhibits relating to the Roswell incident. Arkansas In Eureka Springs, you can see the dinosaurs again. Yes, a Tyrannosaurus and Stegosaurus can be seen walking through the grounds as if you were back in prehistoric times. This is an ideal destination for all dinosaur enthusiasts. If you want to see animals that are still alive and walking, visit the Alligator Farm and Merman Petit Jean State Park has some of the most beautiful views in Arkansas. Stout’s Point, located in the Petit Jean Mountains, has an amazing view of the Arkansas River Valley below. If water is what you’re looking for, don’t miss Cedar Falls, a 95-foot waterfall that cascades into the Cedar Creek Canyon. Camping isn’t the only option in Petit Jean State Park. The park’s historic Mather Lodge overlooks Cedar Creek Canyon and has 24 guest rooms as well as a dining room and swimming pool. Louisiana The Audubon Nature Institute has many attractions for your family to enjoy. The Audubon Zoo has a Louisiana Swamp exhibit, an Asian Domain exhibit, where you can see elephants, sun bears and the beautiful white tiger, and a Dinosaur Adventure exhibit. When you’ve said hi to all the land animals, head over to the Audubon’s Aquarium of the Americas. If you’re feeling homesick, perhaps you should visit the Riverwalk Marketplace in New Orleans. Experience excellent cuisine and shopping, Louisiana style. 6

Video Games & Our Kids

By Alyssa Walker

In a world where everything has gone digital, it’s normal for your child to spend some time with a controller in their hand, but what effects are these video games having on your children? Violence in Video Games Is your child affected negatively by the violence they see in video games? A study conducted by the American Psychological Association says yes. Children who play video games that feature violence can have an increase in aggression and can cause children to internalize their anger and anxiety. Instead of talking about their problems or releasing their emotions in a positive way, such as crying, they keep it inside. By internalizing their emotions, children are more likely to deal with their emotions in negative ways, such as hitting inanimate objects and acting out in other abnormal ways. The American Psychological Association also states that playing violent video games can cause children to be less caring towards their peers. During adolescence, children should be learning how to communicate and interact with their peers in a positive and peaceful manner, but video games cause them to have the opposite reaction. Violent video games also don’t teach children about moral consequences. If they’re playing a game that involves shooting other “people”, they are not sent to jail. Also, if they’re “killed” in the game, they are revived moments later. This may cause young children to be confused about the real world. Make sure your child knows that in real life, there are life changing consequences for the acts that are played out on the screen. What You Can Do to Help Pay attention to the video games your child is playing. Look at the rating on the box and determine whether this is an appropriate game for your child to play. Also, keep video game consoles, as well as computers, in a public area. This allows you to see exactly what’s going on in the video games. Additionally, monitor how long your child is allowed to play video games. Research shows that boys are playing an average of 13 hours per week and five hours per week for girls. This is too much. To keep your children from running straight to their favorite video game, set up alternative games for them to play that include you, their siblings or their friends. Most importantly, talk to your child. Whether or not your child plays violent video games, talk to them about this “digital world” and compare it to the real world. You know your child, and if you sense they’re being negatively impacted by a certain game, discuss why this game is inappropriate and replace it with a more appropriate game. 10 alamoareakids.com Please tell our advertisers you heard about them in Enjoy San Antonio

Arts and Crafts Summer Time Crafts MOTHER’S DAY HAND FLOWER BOUQUET You’ll need: construction or scrapbook paper tissue paper straws or pipe cleaners scotch tape ribbon pen or pencil scissors Instructions: 1. Trace your child’s hand on the construction paper. Repeat multiple times until you have the desired amount of flowers needed for your bouquet. 2. Once done tracing, cut out outlined hands. 3. Wrap hands around straw and tape into place. Make sure that you tape the hand together, to the straw. 4. Using the pen or pencil you used to trace your child’s hand, curl each finger back to make the petals of the flowers. 5. Fold into tissue paper or enjoy in a vase.

SUMMER PINWHEEL You’ll need: Paper (plain) cut into a 7x7 square Crayons Pushpin Seed Bead Wooden Dowel, Skewer, Straw or pencil Instructions: 1. Draw four equal squares on the piece of paper. 2. Color in the squares. 3. Trace four diagonal lines from the edge to just 3 cm away from the center. Repeat this for each of the corners. 4. Cut along each diagonal line. Don’t cut farther than the lines you’ve traced. Don’t cut the four straight lines, either. 5. Working clockwise, pull in, to the center of the square, the same edge on each triangle. 6. Pin edges to the center of the square. Make sure all four corners are overlapping so that none of them can escape, push the pin right through the paper so that each one of these edges sits snugly on top of the other beneath the pin. 7. Slide the seed bead onto the underside of the pin. This bead forms the part that permits the windmill to spin between the paper and the stick. 8. Lay a stick down on a flat surface. 9. Press the pin onto the stick. 10. Drive the pin into the stick securely. If necessary, fold back any part of the pin that sticks through the other side of the stick. 11. Make sure the pin is loose enough to allow the pinwheel to turn. Test it by manually spinning it where it is in front of you. 12. Take your pinwheel outside and watch it catch the wind. 20

The Magik Theatre was created as a voice for young people and families throughout the region. The decision to only produce plays that were based on books children were reading in schools is what sets Magik Theatre apart. Each show is accompanied by study guides, stimulating children to think clearly and creatively. The Magik Theatre is a community center built to educate people of all ages by using the unique philosophy of theatre that has been created in fourteen short years of existence. 420 South Alamo • (210) 227-2751 • www.magiktheatre.org
