Education How to keep kids safe on the Internet
Parents of yesteryear seldom had to worry about protecting their kids from strangers once their kids were safely inside the home. But since the dawn of the Internet, parents know the safety of their private residence can be easily compromised. Be it through social media, chat rooms or other online outlets, strangers can now gain access to children in a variety of ways, many of which are seemingly innocent. The prevalence of online predators has many parents looking for ways to protect their kids when they go online. Some parents may want to outlaw the Internet altogether, but such a reaction can put kids at a significant disadvantage academically by barring them from what is often a valuable resource. Parents who want their kids to get the most out of the Internet without putting them in danger of online predators can employ the following tips. Warn kids about the potential risks & dangers of the Internet. Many parents would prefer their kids did not know about Internet predators, but that wish should not outweigh the desire to keep kids safe. Teach kids that people on the Internet may not always behave honestly, misrepresenting themselves in an effort to gain access to unsuspecting & often trusting kids. Teach kids to take the same approach with online strangers that they do with strangers they see in public, never sharing any personal information or engaging in conversation with someone they don’t know. Teach kids to tell an adult they trust immediately if an online stranger contacts them. Use the filters at your disposal. Parents can filter certain Web sites so children cannot access them. Filter sites geared toward adults as well as any sites where kids might be at risk of coming into contact with potential predators. Block chat rooms and other sites where adults can pose as kids & make sure kids who are involved with social media have made their online profiles private & only accessible to friends and family members. Monitor kids’ online activity on a daily basis. The Internet is such a commonly used tool that many kids go online at least once per day. Homework assignments & other school functions are commonly posted online, & many kids communicate with friends via the Internet as much as they do in person. Parents should monitor their kids’ online activity on a daily basis, scanning their Web history & examining their social media interactions to be sure kids aren’t putting themselves in harm’s way. Kids may grow more resistant to such monitoring as they grow older, but parents cannot turn a blind eye to kids’ online activity simply to avoid a confrontation. Keep the computer in a common area. The family computer should be kept in a common area where parents can monitor how much time kids are spending online, what they’re doing & who they’re speaking to while surfing the Internet. When kids have their own computers or tablets in their bedrooms, parents can easily lose track of how much time kids are spending online. This makes it easier for online predators to gain access to kids, who have a harder time recognizing potential predators than adults. Remember kids can get online on their smartphones, too. Computers are no longer the only way for kids to get online. More & more kids, especially those in high school, are doing their online surfing via their smartphones. Monitor kids’ mobile phone usage just like you do their computer usage. Peruse their call & texting history, and discuss any suspect usage with them immediately. Kids spend more time online now than ever before, & that usage figures to increase in the coming years as the Internet becomes increasingly accessible. Parents should take steps to ensure their youngsters are safe when going online. 6

Education Music education boosts more than test scores School is much more than a place where students gather to learn. For children, school is their first opportunity for social development and introduction to people outside of their family unit. Lessons learned in school go beyond mathematics and language arts. Students learn to cultivate individual interests and find other people who share their interests. Music is one of the ways like-minded children come together. When many people talk about the benefits of music education, they’re quick to point out all of the quantitative and measurable results of that music education. For instance, numerous studies have shown the positive impact music programs can have on children in other areas of study. Dr. Laurel Trainor, a professor of psychology, neuroscience and behavior at McMaster University, has said that young children who take music lessons show different brain development and improved memory compared to children who do not receive musical training. Stanford University researchers have found that musical training improves how the brain processes the spoken word, a finding that researchers say could lead to improving the reading ability of children who have dyslexia and other reading problems. Furthermore, in an analysis of data on more than 25,000 secondary school students, researchers at the United States Department of Education found that students who report consistent involvement in instrumental music during middle school and high school perform significantly better in mathematics by grade 12 than those who do not participate in music programs. There are many reasons why music education can help to make a child a better student, but there also are other benefits that go beyond the classroom environment. Being involved in music also is a social endeavor, and music education can set the course for lifelong friends and help create social groups that last through school and beyond. Music education breeds familiarity during a school career, when going from class to class or from school to school every year can be nerve-wracking and unfamiliar. Walking inside of a band room, whether in elementary school or high school, can create a sense of belonging. It is also a place where students not involved in sports or other activities can gather. Children who move a lot due to a parent’s work may find that joining the marching band or participation in the choir is the one portion of school that is familiar no matter where they attend school. While neighborhoods may change and teachers differ from school to school, music can be a reliable constant. While not every child will go on to be the next, great musical sensation, thanks to music education at school, he or she will have learned lessons in working as a team and other social benefits that will help in all areas of life.

Family Healthcare Children, the Flu & the Flu Vaccine
According to the CDC, the seasonal flu vaccine is the single best way to prevent getting the flu. Your child needs to get a flu vaccine every year, typically at the start of the flu season in early fall (the season lasts October through May). Why every year? The seasonal flu virus can mutate, so the virus that your child was vaccinated against last year may be slightly different than this year’s strain. For example, the 2010-11 flu shot includes the H1N1 virus (swine flu), which the previous year’s shot did not. This also explains why people who are vaccinated can still get the flu; the strain they catch can be different from the one they were vaccinated against. Protection against the flu usually begins about 2 weeks after getting the vaccine. Should My Child Get the Vaccine? The AAP recommends flu vaccines for: Healthy children aged 6 months through 18 years Children 6 months and older with serious health problems, such as lung disease, heart disease, a weakened immune system, or cancer Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children with high-risk conditions and of all healthy children younger than 5 years Health care professionals Pregnant women Children under 6 months of age should NOT be given the seasonal flu vaccine, nor should children with allergies to chicken eggs. If your child has a chronic health condition, talk to the doctor before getting your child vaccinated How is the Vaccine Given? The seasonal flu vaccine is administered via injection or a nasal spray. The injected vaccine contains an inactive virus for the body to build antibodies against, while the nasal spray is made with a weakened live virus. The nasal spray (also called Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine or LAIV, or FluMist) is approved for healthy people aged 2 through 49, but not pregnant women. The injected vaccine is approved for those 6 months or older, whether healthy or having certain chronic medical conditions. According to the CDC, children aged 2 through 9, will need two doses of the flu vaccine the first time they receive it. The first dose “primes” the immune system, while the second dose administered 28 days or more after the first, provides the protection against the seasonal flu virus. The two doses do not need to match, meaning your child can receive the live or inactivated virus for each dose. What are the Risks of the Vaccine? Purposefully inserting a bit of a virus in your child can seem scary, but side effects of the vaccine are minimal and last for at most 1 to 2 days. For the injected vaccine, side effects can include pain or redness at the injection site, a low-grade fever or aches. For the nasal spray, side effects include a runny nose, wheezing, vomiting, head or muscle aches and a fever. One rare but serious side effect of the flu vaccine is an allergic reaction. If you notice your child having an allergic reaction to the vaccine within a few minutes or few hours of receiving it (signs include difficulty breathing, sudden weakness, hives, paleness and elevated heart rate), call your doctor immediately. Another rare but serious side effect of the flu vaccine is Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease in which the body attacks its own nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and in some cases, paralysis. This can occur in at most, about one person per one million who receive the flu vaccines. Article from parenting.com
