Education

Don’t look now! YOUR Behavior is Showing!

Points to Ponder When Responding to Challenging Behavior Demonstrations

W

Jo Mascorro, M.Ed. Independent Consultant for Education, San Antonio, Texas

hether you’re a parent, guardian, teacher, or day care provider, chances are you’ve either seen or had first hand experience with children who demonstrate challenging behaviors when responding to an adult directive. If so, then you also know that participating in the de-escalation process can often be mentally and/or physically exhausting. With the best of intentions, what we do in the moment can actually make it go from not so good to really bad! We can be so emotionally charged that we lose sight of the fact that the behaviors we demonstrate and the words we say can actually affect what happens during the conversation. If our intent is to slow down the situation and prevent it from getting worse, in reality, adult behavior determines what happens next, not the

behavior of the child! We can attempt to teach, model, request, demand, bribe, and even try to manipulate, but at the end of the day, the only things we truly have control over are ourselves, our actions, and our reactions. It is very important to think about what we CAN do when teaching children the benefits of completing a task or following directions in a timely manner. Consider these techniques when assisting children in learning to respond to adult directives. • Sometimes a child’s brain needs more detail in order to better understand the specifics of adult expectations. Use the simple two-letter word “by” to clarify and provide directives in “clusters of three”. - We might say something like; “Get in

Education here and clean up your room!” - Try instead; “Clean up your room by hanging your jacket in the closet, making your bed, and putting your dirty clothes in the basket.” • Being specific can help the brain focus when emotion gets in the way of thinking clearly. When a child is upset, it’s very difficult to engage in productive conversation. You might be amazed at the details of their response when you change the words you use to gather information. Rather than asking lots of questions to find out what happened, try using the words “tell me” or “show me”. - We might say; “Why did you do that?” or “What’s wrong?” - Try instead; “Tell me why you hit your sister,” or “Show me what made you mad enough to kick the chair.” • When consequences are the outcome of a behavior demonstration we leave children with the impression we “did” to them rather than they “did” to themselves. To emphasize ownership and accountability of behavior, consider removing the “I” word from the directive. - We might say; “If you don’t clean up your room right now, I’m not going to let you use your iPad.” or “If you clean your room in the next ten minutes, I’ll let you use your iPad.” - Try instead; “Not cleaning up your room tells me you don’t want to use your iPad.” or “Cleaning your room, tells me you want to use your iPad.” Taking the time to emphasize the detail of your expectations at the beginning of your conversation may keep you from getting caught up in the “repeat, articulate, get louder” technique typically used at the back end of a conversation. An all to familiar adult to child dialogue sounds something like, “WHAT…DID…. I….TELL…YOU...TO… DO?....” complete with various body and facial gestures (i.e.: hands on the

hips, and often a loud tone of voice!) With adult brains, we have the clear advantage of a developed frontal lobe that teaches us to understand the effects of long-term consequences regarding behavior demonstrations. Our challenge is our ability to maintain the memory that reminds us to use it! Our responses should be driven by the ultimate responsibility to pay close attention to our words and our behaviors as we TEACH children how to take ownership and be accountable for theirs. Children must learn that in any given situation, their choices will typically result in “opportunities”. For example, if they choose to comply with a request, that choice may be saying that they would like an “opportunity” to go about their business or even do something fun like play video games or hang out with their friends. If they choose not to comply, the behaviors they demonstrate may be saying that they prefer an “opportunity” to perhaps lose privileges or go to their room. They must be taught that at that moment, the choice is theirs, and the resulting “opportunities” are based on what their behavior demonstrations “say” they would like to have happen next. As adults, our reaction to their choices and/ or behavior demonstrations is to “honor their request” in a consistent and timely manner. Communication can be stressful on the brain no matter what the age of the participants. We can not afford to forget is that children are only children one time. Once that time passes, they are adults forever. We certainly owe it to our children AND to ourselves to at least give it a try: Remember to be PATIENT! Remember to MODEL! Remember to TEACH! Who knew that at the end of the day, it was really all about YOU!

Keeping Kids Active Once the School Year Ends

I

n many ways, today’s kids have busier schedules than any previous generations. Many extracurricular activities, including sports, require a nearly yearround commitment, and the dual-income household has landed many kids in afterschool programs where kids tend to their schoolwork or engage in various activities that keep them from resting on their laurels. But those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once school is out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on their hands. Though it’s good for kids to

squeeze in some rest and relaxation during their summer break, it’s also important for kids to stay active so they don’t develop poor habits as the summer goes on. In addition, the American Psychological Association notes that kids who are physically active are more capable of coping with stress and tend to have higher self-esteem than kids who do not include physical activity as part of their regular routines. The following are a few suggestions for parents looking for ways to keep their kids active throughout the summer while still allowing them to recharge their batteries after a long school year.

Education • Plan an active vacation. Summer is when many families go on vacation, so why not choose a vacation that involves more than napping poolside? Though it’s still good to leave some time for relaxation, find a locale where you can embrace activities like snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, or other adventures that get you and your youngsters off the poolside chaise and out exploring. Such a trip might inspire kids to embrace an activity more fully, getting them off the couch not only while they’re on vacation but also when they return home for the rest of summer. • Teach kids to garden. Gardening might be seen as a peaceful and relaxing hobby, but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and hard work that pays physical dividends. A garden must be planted, hoed, weeded, and watered, and gardening gets kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. When growing a vegetable garden, kids might embrace the chance to be directly involved in the foods that will eventually end up on their dinner tables. • Go swimming. Few adults who work in offices haven’t looked out their windows on a sunny summer day and thought how nice it would be to be spending that afternoon making a few laps in a lake, at the beach or in a pool. Kids have the same daydreams

during the summer, so take a day off every so often and take the kids for an afternoon of swimming. Swimming is a great activity that exercises the entire body, including the shoulders, back, legs, hips, and abdominals. In addition, swimming helps kids and adults alike maintain a healthy weight while also improving their cardiovascular health. • Limit how much time kids spend watching television, playing video games or surfing the Internet. Many of today’s kids are as tech savvy as they are busy. It’s important that kids don’t spend too much time online, on the couch watching television or playing video games. Such activities are largely sedentary, and they can set a bad precedent for the months ahead, even when the school year begins once again. Parents should limit how much time their youngsters spend in front of the television or the computer during summer vacation, keeping track and turning the TV or computer off if they suspect kids are spending too much time staring at the screen instead of being active. Kids might not love it when you turn their video games off or minimize their access to social media, but explain the limitations at the onset of summer and let kids know you expect them to be physically active even if it is summer vacation.

Family Healthcare Fostering healthy eating habits in children If kids had their way, pizza, chicken fingers and french fries would make up a significant portion of their diets. But parents know they must make kids’ culinary choices for them so youngsters get all of the vitamins and nutrients they need to grow up strong and healthy. Parents also tend to know how difficult it can be to convince kids to embrace healthy eating. Healthy eating habits can help kids live healthier lives and perform better in the classroom while setting them up for a lifetime of making the right choices at mealtime. Though encouraging kids to eat healthy may not always be easy, the following are a few tips for parents hoping to foster healthy eating habits in their children. * Stick to a schedule. Parents should establish a regular eating schedule, for both meals and snacks, so kids learn the importance of not skipping meals. Kids who learn to eat at regular intervals are more likely to continue doing so as they grow older. When kids stick to a meal schedule, they are less likely to overeat and they’re likely to have more energy throughout the day, which should help them stay attentive at school and be more engaged in their extracurricular activities. * Involve kids when choosing the menu. Kids might be more excited about eating healthy when you involve them in choosing the menu. Invite them along on trips to the grocery store and allow them to choose one of their favorite foods for the meal in exchange for eating the healthy fare you have chosen. Parents may end up eating a lot of side dishes of macaroni and cheese, but their youngsters will also end up eating their vegetables. * Plan healthy desserts. Dessert is often considered an unhealthy indulgence, but there’s plenty of

nutritious desserts that are so delicious kids likely will not realize they’re eating healthy. A dessert of fresh fruit and a small serving of yogurt can provide the same post-meal refreshment as ice cream or cake, but it does so with much fewer calories and a lot more nutrients and vitamins. What’s more, kids will come to look at dessert as a chance to eat fresh fruits instead of an opportunity to load up on ice cream or other, less healthy alternatives. * Serve healthy portions. Sometimes it’s not just what is on the plate but how much is on the plate that can be healthy or unhealthy. When doling out portions for the family, create healthy portions so kids are not encouraged to overeat. Kids who grow up eating healthy portions are more likely to continue doing so into adulthood. Overeating is one of the culprits behind being overweight and obese, so kids who learn to control their portions are much less likely to overeat and gain excess weight. * Don’t reward kids with food. Some parents try to reward youngsters with food, allowing kids to indulge in unhealthy fare in acknowledgement of a good report card or something else kids should be proud of. But using food as a reward is an unhealthy eating habit that can lead to problems down the road as kids become adults responsible for their own eating habits. * Set a positive example. Kids are more likely to eat healthy when mom and dad are healthy eaters. If your first choice at snack time is to reach for a bag of potato chips, then don’t be surprised when your kids opt for chips over healthier fare like a piece of fruit. “Do as I say, not as I do” is a tough sell to youngsters when it comes to their eating habits, so parents should set a positive example for their kids by ensuring their own diets are healthy.

Help Kids Learn the Game of Golf

A

dults who play golf know how fun and frustrating the game can be. Whether you’re a veteran golfer or someone just learning the links, golf can be challenging. But as exacting as the game can be, it also can be just as rewarding, even for kids. Children who embrace the game of golf will learn a host of lessons they can apply in all facets of life. A humbling game even for professional golfers, golf can teach kids lessons in humility and the value of persistence even when things aren’t going your way. Golf is also a great way for parents to get kids off the couch and outdoors for some fun in the sun. Instead of spending summer afternoons in front of the television, kids who play golf are out patrolling pristine golf courses while getting some cardiovascular exercise along the way. Golf can also strengthen a child’s hand-eye coordination, which can help them in other activities, including many different sports. Though many people do not begin playing golf until they’ve reached adulthood, it’s never too early for boys and girls to start learning the game of golf. Parents of preschoolers can start their kids off with a toddler play set. Though it’s just a toy, a play set can help lay a solid foundation for future golfers. Kids who have watched Mom and Dad play golf or practice their swing can develop their own swings on their play set. As kids approach school age, don’t overlook the nearby putt-putt or miniature golf range as a valuable teaching tool. Miniature golf clubs are small enough for many children to use comfortably, and kids can use miniature golf courses as a place to put any lessons or advice on putting to good use. What’s more, a miniature golf course is more

than just golf, with creative courses and other fun activities, so kids won’t feel overwhelmed with golf. When kids move on from preschool to elementary school, some might want to tag along with Mom or Dad to the driving range. You should try to avoid overwhelming kids with too much instruction or information. Instead, keep things as simple as possible, teaching them the basic swing and encouraging them no matter how quickly they adapt. As kids enter middle school and approach high school, those who are enjoying the game of golf can take advantage of the driving range if they haven’t already begun to. A driving range typically has markers that indicate the distance of a regular hole, regardless of which tee you will play from on an actual golf course. Kids can aim for holes at shorter distances to learn how far their drives are going. You can then adjust the lessons you teach your children based on how far youngsters can drive the ball. As a child gets closer to high school, you might want to buy the child his or her own set of clubs. Look for inexpensive clubs (oftentimes, thrift stores or other secondhand retailers have clubs for sale) because growing children will eventually grow out of their first set of clubs. When your child finds a set of clubs that suits him or her, teach the proper way to swing and consider signing up your son or daughter for lessons. Those first few lessons can prove invaluable, turning a pastime into a passion kids will carry with them throughout their lives.

CINNAMON FRENCH TOAST STICKS

8 slices thick-cut Texas toast 4 large eggs 1 cup heavy cream 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 Tablespoon sugar 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract Unsalted butter, for cooking Maple syrup, for serving 1. Cut each slice of Texas toast into four sticks. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, cinnamon, sugar and vanilla. 3. Dip each piece of bread in the egg mixture, turning to coat it on all sides so that it’s well-saturated with the custard. 4. Shake off any excess and place the coated bread on a large plate or baking dish. 5. Heat a large pan over medium heat and add 2 to 3 tablespoons of butter. Once the butter has melted, place several of the coated sticks in a single layer in the pan. (Do not overcrowd the pan.) 6. Cook until golden brown on one side then flip and continue cooking until the sticks are golden brown and slightly crisped on all edges.

EGG-IN-A-HOLE

1 slice Your Favorite Kind Of Bread 1 Tablespoon Butter 1 whole Egg Salt To Taste Pepper To Taste 1. With a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass, press a hole in the center of the slice of bread. 2. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat, melt a Tablespoon of butter in it. When the butter is all spread out, place the piece of bread in the skillet and crack the egg straight into the center of hole. 3. Cook for at least 30 seconds or so before attempting to move the bread or things could get messy. Sprinkle the egg with seasoning. After about a minute, flip it over with a spatula and season the other side. 4. Now move the whole piece of toast around the skillet, soaking up all of the glorious butter. Let it cook until the yolk feels, to the touch, still soft without feeling over-jiggly. Here’s the key: golden brown toast, white (not brown/burned) whites, soft unbroken yolk.
