Winter is often the season when our bodies rebel and may lead to us feeling under the weather. By following these Top Tips you can be ready when the temperatures plummet. Keep both yourself and your family healthy this winter. Ensure you keep warm. Check the labels on your clothes and try to avoid wearing too much pure cotton (unless it is brushed cotton). Cotton is fine for summer months as it cools but it will not keep you warm in the depths of a cold winter. Mixed fibers are best and if you want to push the boat out for maximum warmth try cashmere/pure wool. When choosing your outfit for the day, you will need to wear more than one garment. If you are wearing a jumper, also wear an undergarment like a camisole or vest, warm top and then the jumper. One of the best suggestions is to buy Thermal underwear. Thermal garments have had a make over so do have a look in your local department store. Buy at least one item (you will be glad you did). Protect heat loss. Heat loss is the main reason why we feel cold; keep your feet, hands, head and neck area warm by wearing non-cotton socks, hat, gloves and scarf. Fashion should always come second and warmth should be a firm first in cold seasons.

When sleeping consider wearing extra clothes in bed including bed socks as the body, losses heat while we sleep. Pop a hot water bottle in your bed about 10 minutes before sleeping (makes a huge difference). If you use a hot water bottle, avoid using an electric blanket, as water and electric are lethal. Choose one or the other but not both ever! Hydrate with warm drinks. In the warmth of summer, our bodies sweat losing liquid, which reminds us to replenish our bodies with liquid. In winter, it is rare to sweat unless you are ill or exercising. If you do not fancy a glass of cold water or cold milk, drink plenty of lovely hot chocolate, hot tea or a fancy coffee. Soups are also a great way to hydrate. A lovely refreshing drink is simply a mug of hot water, splash of lemon juice and a piece of ginger. You can spice it up with adding in some apple cordial. Reduce the effects of dry skin. Hydration will help you skin and organs keep working. Too much artificial heating can have a drying effect on your skin so fluid is essential. Keep bowls of water around the air to help hydrate the air to keep your nose clear of mucus etc. If you feel a cold coming on add in a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water.
Vitamins are essential. Long gone are our salad days and with that plenty of fresh fruit. Vitamin C is the crucial vitamin your body needs. Vitamin C is water-soluble and as such does not stay in the body. You cannot overdose on this vitamin. Oranges are the most common source of Vitamin C but you will also find it in peppers, cauliflower, kiwi, papaya, broccoli and lemon to name but a few. Natural Vitamin C is always best for your body. However, if you need to supplement use a Vitamin C tablet of 250g of vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps with the absorption of iron from food. The majority of people will need vitamin C for well-being but if you suffer from health problems, you may want to contact your Doctor for advice. Eat warm foods. Our bodies will need warm, nourishing food. Think hearty food such as casseroles, roast, sausage and mash, vegetarian bake or a simple hot jacket potato with chilli. You can add plenty of fresh vegetables to almost any meal. If you are, having a sandwich do add it, tomato, cucumber, lettuce etc. to benefit from vitamins. Children especially need a good breakfast before school. Porridge is ideal but not to everyone's taste so use warm milk on their favorite cereal. The motto
of five portions of fresh fruit or vegetables a day is imperative in winter months to avoid flu's and colds. Stay mobile. We become much less active in the winter but it is important to keep exercising where you can. If you do not fancy popping to the gym then walk up and down the stairs a few times a day. If you move around you create much body heat than just sitting. For the elderly, this is very important to keep the joints lubricated and maintain muscle strength. Heating. Keep your house warm and do not skimp too much by only having one bar on the fire. You can naturally reduce expensive bills by closing doors to rooms to keep the heat in. Use draught excluders around windows and doors. Don't heat the house too much if you are not in it as it is a waste of resources and money but do ensure you set the regulator to be warm before you get up and be warm when you arrive home. Use heavier curtains if you can in winter it keeps the draughts out considerably. If your home does not have adequate insulation, contact your local council to see if they can offer assistance. Be ready. Keep essential items in your car in case bad weather arrives quickly without notice. The key things you will need for a journey are a couple of blankets, heat pads, thermos of tea, water, snack bars, torch, emergency rescue numbers, items to keep kids amused, shovel for removing snow. Also, any medical/ prescription items you might need. All check your car is road worthy before setting out on a long journey and check the weather reports regularly. Stock up. Weather can be unpredictable even with frequent weather reports. Always keep plenty of milk, bread and essential items in your cupboard just in case you cannot get out to the shops for a few days.

Winter Weekend 6 Great Ideas for Staying Active on Cold Winter Weekends
By: Graeme Knights Winter weekends are usually looked upon as cold, bleak, and as a time frame in which there is little to do. People look forward to the end of the week and then sit at home in front of the television. It's a ho-hum time at best...
Take a weekend break and do things you normally wouldn't do. Activities don't have to be expensive or difficult. As a matter of fact, the simpler things are often inexpensive and a lot of fun.
...However there's a lot more to do on a winter weekend than you think! Whether you're newly married, have children, or are retired with an empty nest, there are winter activities abound.
A quiet stroll through the woods or a park can be exhilarating and can awaken your senses. A hike through the most remote location you have access to can give you a sense of achievement and that wonderful 'fresh air

tired feeling'. Remember to Wrap up for the weather in layers to keep warm and then help each other peel off when you warm up. Nature may seem asleep during the winter but still speaks to those who listen. A backyard cooking fire can brings out the best in easy to cook foods, whatever time of year, and is also great to stand around. Set up your grill with small sticks instead of charcoal, light it, and put your hotdogs on a camping fork or whittled stick over the fire for that more rustic feel! Another good campfire idea is to roast marshmallows and make smores. Dancing flames and the smell of great food lift winter spirits without fail and can give a truly festive feel to the time of year (especially with a little bit of savory wine).
If you'd rather be indoors, how about a trip to the swimming park or a hotel with a pool? Kids especially love the water and what better time to go swimming than when they least expect it? Or have a family game night pick a couple of board games and stock up on popcorn and soft drinks for a great time. Keep the games age appropriate and your kids will have a whale of a time. Get creative, try the age old activities that have entertained for generations - press a few beautiful leaves in a covering of wax paper with a hot clothing iron. Cut them out to make window decoration or book marks - they'll last all winter. Or try making handmade jewelry, you can buy beads and equipment for little cost and dress up your little ones in their own glamour creations! Cooking is another great thing to do with kids - celebrate the holidays by making cookies. Start from scratch and let everyone help. Cookies lend themselves to creativity in both ingredients and shapes so have a good time, do some experimenting, and let everyone decorate what they bake. You can always freeze the extras or give them away. If it's not the kids you're trying to entertain, host a meal for friends. Cook a big pot of chilli and set out the cheese, chopped onions, and all the dressings. Everyone loves a good warm meal in Winter and even more so when it's with friends and family. Winter weekends don't have to lead to the doldrums or produce cabin fever. Be creative, set aside the time, and have fun. Your winter weekend breaks can be the best weekends of the year. www.hillcountryparents.com

NEW YEAR’S
Resolution
5 tips for staying on track this year
Be Realistic.
The easiest way to skip out on a New Year’s Resolution is to make it unrealistic and unattainable. If it is already difficult for you to stick to a goal, try setting a smaller goal. Instead of setting a goal to lose a certain amount of weight, try setting a goal of doing 30 minutes of physical activity every day for a year.
Create a Plan.
Without a plan, your resolution is just an idea. Developing a plan helps your mind focus on the goal, and helps you create a rhythm for your body and mind. Keep your plan somewhere you look at on a daily basis, such as the fridge, the bathroom mirror, or a daily cell phone reminder.
Stick to it.
Every New Year’s Resolution begins with the best of intentions. Then why is it so easy to fall off the wagon? Everyone has their own ways to stay on track, so you’ve got to find yours. Some options include creating an accountable friend, daily affirmations, and charting your successes and failures over time.
Don’t Beat Yourelf Up.
We are all human, and we all fail at times. The key to getting past your failures is not to beat yourself up. Make a conscous effort to stop putting yourself down, and try focusing on the positive. With all new ventures, patience is key. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Treat Yo’self.
With any success, big or small, it is important to remind yourself of why your set your goal in the first place. A great way to remind yourself is to treat yourself with each success. Positive reinforcement can go a long way when you really feel disappointed. 14

Lange Sponsored by: The Magik Theatre You can get a very good, quality education for your special needs child within the school system. Educate yourself before you go into a meeting with the professionals in the school district: •
Learn all you can about your child's specific disability (classification)

•

Always keep a record of any and all meetings (IEP or private) dealing with your child. Document every call you have with the school, teacher or district official, with the date, time, name(s) of those involved & the specifics of the conversation. Do this with all meetings as well (general or IEP specific). Any notes sent home should also be kept in this file for reference at a later date, if necessary. The school &/or district does not usually freely offer the information to all that you feel your child needs. Before attending any meetings with the school personnel, write a list of questions to ask about the things you feel your child needs to achieve his/her maximum potential in his/her school career. When attending an IEP meeting, make sure the goals & objectives to reach those goals, are realistic & achievable within the year they will be worked on & monitored. If you feel there are other needs your child has, bring them up at this meeting so they may be added to the IEP & another meeting won't have to be convened to change the IEP. If it's not on the IEP, chances are, it won't be worked on in class. Be sure you stay on top of what your child & their teacher are doing at least weekly. If you wait until marking periods end, you've lost valuable time that could have been spent working on viable goals for your child's success.
