REOPENING OF TEXAS

County Judge and Boerne Mayor respond to Governor’s order Christina Ryrholm Hill Country Weekly On Tue. March 2 Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued executive order GA-34. The subject was the reopening of Texas following nearly a year of restrictions and mandates from his office. Essentially the order states that Texas will be open for business without any restrictions, (100%), that there is no mandated requirement to wear a face mask and no county judge has the authority to make it (or social distancing or hand washing) mandatory.

Kendall County Judge Darrel Lux said yesterday that he would be guided by the governor’s order but that it lacked clarity and direction. He and Jeff Fincke (Emergency Management Director) will take the time between now and next Wednesday, when the order shall take effect, to determine exactly what it means - such as, will the courts be allowed to have trials in the court room, will temperatures be taken upon entering certain buildings and are large group gatherings permitted. Lux expects to have some of these questions answered by Monday morning’s Commissioners Court meeting that will be offered by zoom or in person attendance.

In the meantime he urges that individuals continue to be cautious and show good conscience as “people will still get COVID and people will still die”. Boerne Mayor Tim Handren stated that the city will comply with the context of the Governor’s order and “do what’s right for the community”. Referencing the entirety of what the governor said “people are encouraged to follow the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) guidelines. As for whether or not Tuesday’s City Council Meeting will have the option of zoom participation he stated, “I haven’t decided yet but I am leaning towards zoom”.
