Hillcrest Christian College Newsletter 12 February 2016

Page 1

ISSUE 1, FRIDAY, 12 FEBRUARY 2016

PRINCIPAL, JEFF DAVIS At the start of each year I introduce a “Word for the Year” with the intention of giving staff something to focus on as they prepare for the year ahead. I had been mulling over the options when the word “Excellence” was made very much a clear vision. “Excellence in Christ” is of course one of Hillcrest Christian College’s four cornerstone values and the synergy of this made perfect sense to the direction that we are moving as a school. Excellence can be defined in many ways, however from my perspective; Excellence is a quality that people really appreciate, because it's so hard to find. Excellence is the quality of excelling, of being truly the best at something. We can find this in Ecclesiastes 9:10; "Whatever your hand finds to do, verily, do it with all your might." Without the pursuit of excellence, life has the propensity to become bland, and that of course leads us to attitudes of “Near enough is good enough” etc. I do not accept this as the path we at Hillcrest should accept and as such, I firmly believe we should be excellent in all that we do honouring God through our pursuit. Whatever we do must be the very best it can be. We wouldn’t give an offering to Christ that was half hearted and so our every action must be the best we can possibly make it. If we extrapolate this ideal we may find that long term success could be based on the abilities of people to

rise to the challenge of excellence in all that they do. People who fail to master this challenge may find that their success in life is also compromised.

WANT TO LEARN TO SPEAK CHINESE? THANK YOU FROM THE COMMUNITY

So what does “Excellence” look like at Hillcrest? My prayer is that everything we do to serve, communicate and educate our community is of the highest level. We need to ensure that we, as representatives of Christ the Head of this school, do everything we do at the highest level possible. We as the staff will do all in our powers to provide our community with the best possible experience. This aligns with our faith, the cornerstone of Hillcrest and also the reason we choose to work at this school. I hope all of you see this attitude in our hearts and actions and walk with us as we journey towards building a school that builds our children into incredible young men and women in all ways.

We received a phone call from Mel, a parent of a student at Gold Coast Christian College, who wanted to say a huge Thank You to the Hillcrest families. When they are trying to get out of the driveway in the heavy traffic periods the Hillcrest drivers always let her in. She said it was a common feeling amongst all the parents at how gracious Hillcrest families are and how they have always been. She requested we do a Thank You to the parents in the Newsletter. Thank you Hillcrest parents for being so considerate and awesome.

JUNIOR LEARNING COMMUNITY PREP Welcome to all our beautiful 2016 Prep families! We have are so excited to get to know you and your little ones this year. We have had a wonderful start to our year already learning to recognise, say and write some letters and numbers. Our Preppies have loved visiting Mrs Tobler and Mrs Rienecker for SMILE and Music and especially walking up to the library to borrow their very own book form the library. In French lessons, our preppies have been practising bonjour and au revoir and in Digital Technologies children have been learning the technical terms for parts of an iPad. Our Humpty Dumpty Day, in Week 2, was so much fun with each class doing a variety of artistic Humpty creations and activities. We welcome our new members of our 2016 Prep team, Miss Rachel Arnold (Prep A, teacher), Mrs Nicky Chau (Prep D, teacher aide) and Mrs Deb McConnell (Prep A teacher aide for Mondays). See you soon in Prepland! Kindest regards from the Prep Team.

year 1 What a busy and exciting last couple of weeks we have had in Year 1! We have made new friends and had time to catch up with old ones. The students have been looking at numbers from 1-20 and practising writing and expanding them. They have zoomed through the Solar system looking at the different planets and some of their features, students have also looked at the weather in our city and how we can be informed about changes to the weather. In writing, we have been practising forming letters on the red and blue lines and learning how to write proper sentences. We have had a blast so far and cannot wait to see what the weeks ahead hold!

'This verse shows me that God is wonderful and powerful' - LIAM 'I think He (God) is big and strong because He finished (creation) in one week'- YUSUKE 'This verse tells me that God is really special and He can do anything and He loves us a lot!'- GRACE 'This verse tells me that God was so amazing that He made this amazing world and everything on it'- POPPI 'God created the world and it makes me say to myself, wow!'ALEX

YEAR 4P (ECHO) Term one started off with a bang … lots of banging of nails, sanding wood, gluing, painting, sewing and using equipment to make toys of yesteryear. We are exploring what entertainment was like for children of the 1850s in early Australian life. What forces are at work in moving toys form the basis for Science investigations. During week one and two the children were given a group Marshmallow challenge. How do we design and make a free standing tower as tall as possible using 20 pieces of spaghetti, tape, string and with one marshmallow on top?

YEAR 4Y 4Y has had a wonderful start to the year. We are in the process of learning about some of the amazing natural features of Africa, including Victoria Falls, Mount Kilimamnjaro, Nile River and the Sahrara. It is very interesting to compare characteristics of Africa to Australia. God really was imaginative when he created the world.

YEAR 4SL

YEAR 5S

The students have enjoyed learning about the 7 days of Creation in Genesis 1-2:3. As a class, we studied the verse, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands". The students thought carefully about the impact this scripture has on them and how it can shape their view of the world we live in.

The wonderful and amazing 5S have been busy these last two weeks. In this time, all if not most children have set up their devices and are ripping and ready to go for the weeks ahead. In class, students have begun their journey into the world of Roald Dahl when reading Matilda. This thoroughly entertaining book is helping students to examine and utilise various literary devices such

as similes and metaphors. Please know that this is just a snippet of the great work that 5S have taken part in these last two weeks.

YEAR 5m Can you believe it is already Week 3 of Term 1?! It's been such a busy yet exciting start to the term. We've been getting to know each other over the last few weeks as we work as a class, in groups and individually in our lessons. We've done quite a lot of group work as we've explored our theme of 'Survivor' in Geography and Science. One activity we particularly found interesting last week was looking at the locations where major bushfires and floods occurred around the world in 2015 and then mapping these onto a world map according to the different seasons. It's been a great start to the term and we are excited to continue.

YEAR 5P In 5P we have been exploring how to use colour and line symbolically in art. From this we are creating an artwork which will represent our personalities. We have been discussing natural disasters such as bushfires and floods and how to prepare for them. A big focus has been developing an instant recall of times tables. We have used a variety of fun ways to learn and recall them such as shooting down the answers on plastic cups with Nerf guns. There have been plenty of smiles as we have been reading the novel ‘Matilda’ as a class and exploring the characters of ‘Gilligan’s Island’.

YEAR 5PJ & 6M (ECHO) Year 6M ECHO and Year 5PJ ECHO students have had some great opportunities to get to know one another and work together in a collaborative environment. The classroom is ‘buzzing’ with ideas, excitement and enthusiasm!

LEADERS INDUCTION SERVICE: FRIDAY, 27 JANUARY 2016 At the beginning of this Term, SLC held a Leadership Induction Service for our 2016 Student Leaders. The service was focused on our student leaders being servants to the community in their role as a leader. Serving others God's way imposes no conditions and expects no reward: “But love [even] your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.” LUKE 6:35 This powerful scripture tells us much about God's character—that His approach is one of unbiased service to mankind. SPORT WELCOME TO 2016 Sport and Cocurricular is off to a flying start in 2016 with the refinement of old programs and the inception of new ones. Within sport, the Basketball and Futsal programs have seen incredible growth with the inception of new teams and extended training opportunities, while the establishment of the new Hillcrest Netball Club for the younger students in the Junior Learning Community has laid a fantastic foundation for the Netball Excellence Program. Furthermore, the early commencement of the Running and Sprints programs will give students the greatest potential for success at the upcoming Cross Country and Athletics carnivals. Within cocurricular the Chess, Duke of Edinburgh, Debating and Computer Programming (SLC) have drawn substantial interest for a healthy year of belonging for a diverse range of students. This will be the year of growth, refinement and excellence for Hillcrest Sport and Cocurricular.

BASKETBALL AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS (DECEMBER 2015) - NATIONAL U17 BOYS CHAMPIONS. What an amazing way to end 2015— with two Hillcrest basketball teams participating in the Australian School Championships in Canberra. Opening Ceremony at Southern Cross Stadium at Tuggeranong saw 121 teams representing over 70 schools (Public and Private) across 14 divisions showcasing the diversity that makes this event such a success for school sport. Our Open Girls team represented Hillcrest in the Under 20 category division, placing 4th overall after a gruelling competition, under the coaching of Pero Cameron. This team performed brilliantly under pressure, with over half the team being students in Years 8-10. This result is fantastic—and will be a force to be reckoned with in 2016!

the beauty of a well honed team. They won each game they played; they won their way through to the Grand Final bringing home the Gold Medal with an absolute nail biter of a game, defeating Holy Spirit College from Bellambi, NSW, 52-63.

BASKETBALL TRIPLE-HEADER Last Friday, 5 February 2016 saw a Triple Header for Hillcrest Basketball. Custom College Recruiting set the scene in the theatre with over 90 parents and students attending an information session for student athletes wanting to rise to the next level, pursuing their chosen sport in College in the US and Canada. Following this seminar, the Hillcrest vs Christ’s College game provided the curtain raiser on the court. Our boys were outplayed in their first game back by Christ’s College from Christchurch, NZ, who consistently made their three point shots count. Although our boys clawed their way back to within 2 by the end of the third quarter, under pressure they couldn’t stop the outside shooting and went down by ten on the buzzer. Final score 63 – 73. The Grand Finale, with great supporter attendance, was the men’s QBL Rollers up against the NZBL’s Canterbury Rams in a preseason trial. Coached by Pero Cameron, the Rollers went down by 12, with a final score of 71 – 83. Our very own cranked up atmosphere by and calling the the games.

Students then need to fill out an application form that must be signed by the school (if students don't get this signed, they will not be allowed to trial). PERFORMING ARTS HILLCREST DANCE TEAMS 2016  MORE INFO - PARENT LOUNGE

An exciting development in the growth of our Hillcrest Christian College Dance program is happening this year. The College has amongst the student body some very high profile dance students, and many younger students showing much potential in dance. As a result, the College has decided to invest more dedicated time and funding into continuously raising the profile of our Dance Program in the community. Dance teams are commencing in Week 3 of Term 1 on Thursdays, during the Senior Learning Community’s dedicated Sports time, from 12:00pm onwards. We have collaborated with the Currumbin Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA) to create a program for all interested dance students from Years 7 to 12. There will be three dance teams this year SENIOR DANCE SQUAD – Our top Dance Excellence Team. This is an auditioned dance team that works towards various performances and competitions throughout the year. JUNIOR DANCE SQUAD – Our junior Dance Excellence Team. This is an auditioned dance team that works towards various performances and competitions throughout the year. OPEN DANCE TEAM – An opportunity for any student in Years 7-12 to learn a variety of dance routines in mixed styles e.g. HipHop, Contemporary and Jazz STAFF Specialist dance instructors from Hillcrest and CAPA will be taking the teams, coordinated by Hillcrest Dance Coordinator, Ms Jess Hines. The Principal Dance Teacher for CAPA is Miss Kelly Buchanan. Kelly is a former student of Hillcrest, who now runs this very successful business, and we fully endorse CAPA’s programs and philosophy of dance instruction. TRANSPORT Students will be transported by bus to and from CAPA’s Currumbin studios each Thursday during the normal sports times. The Currumbin Academy of Performing Arts is located at 10 Villiers Drive, Currumbin Waters. COSTS The cost to students for these programs is $10 per class for the Senior and Junior Squad. Fees paid are inclusive of the students dance tuition, all entry fees for

competitions throughout the year and their costume hire fee. Once auditions are complete after Week 3 of school, students will be advised of their selection into the two Dance Excellence teams. Fee statements for the term will be issued to students by CAPA and these are payable to CAPA by Week 5 of Term 1, and the commencement of each term thereafter. Inclusion in the Open Dance Team is free of charge. COMMITMENT Upon acceptance to our performance teams, students will be asked to consider the commitment required. A commitment form will be sent home to parents detailing what will be expected of the students. REQUIREMENTS All students in the Performance Teams will be required to own a pair of black jazz shoes and tanned shimmer jazz tights.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Big developments are happening in this area of the College. This Year our Senior Concert Band will have 30 members. Our Year 6 Concert Band will have 45 members, and our Year 5 Concert Band 67 members. This is huge growth for the department which will see Hillcrest Music really be a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. Last Thursday all of our Year 5 students were given their Band or Strings instruments and for the band musicians this was their very first lesson. The amount of positive feedback I have been receiving from students and parents over how enjoyable this experience was has been very rewarding. At Hillcrest we really believe in the value that learning a musical instrument has for your child; and the positive social, emotional and academic results that can result from this. The school invests significantly into this key area of the College and the results are certainly beginning to show.

IN THE CLASSROOM Hillcrest has a large range of Performing Arts options for students from Prep through to Year 12 both inside and outside the classroom. This week I would like to commend the JLC Music program, and in particular the staff who teach it, Nerida Rienecker, Jenny Moon and Renae Battle. EVERY child up to Year 7 has a weekly music lesson with a specialist music teacher, and every time I enter one of these classes,

the joy I witness in the children singing, playing instruments and learning about music is infectious. It is so good sometimes I need to stick around a bit and join in!

SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL Rehearsals are well under way now for our musical in May. Students and staff have been busy preparing songs, dances and acting in what is promising to be a really fun show. There is a big cast for this production of around 70 students, and they are already sounding impressive. Our key staff working with the children are Mrs Nerida Rienecker as Music Director and Mr Athol Henderson as Director. This week the set has been delivered and will be ready for painting. Once again you will gradually see the theatre transformed into a magical space, where you will almost feel transported to another world; only this time that world is inside a cartoon. This is a musical the whole family can enjoy, and in particular the Wednesday afternoon BBQ followed by show performance on 18th May. I have designed this afternoon so families with younger children can enjoy the musical at a reasonable time.

HILLCREST CHOIRS Week 2 saw our choirs commencing rehearsals in both JLC and SLC. With 13 College Choirs there is an opportunity for all students from Yrs 2 -12 to be involved in our large and vibrant program. The following choirs are open to all students and require no audition and no additional cost. This festival is one of the largest choral festivals in the world, and we are participating in the International program. This will see our choirs have the opportunity to workshop with world class choir directors and composers, as well as perform a numbers of concerts including at the monumental St Davids Cathedral as part of the 10:00am choral church service, as well as at the Hobart Town Hall.

TEACHING & LEARNING QUALITY TEACHING & LEARNING AT HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Over the past 12 months we have been working to develop a clear, research-based teaching and learning framework that identify key standards for our teachers. Our Layers of Learning Framework is a set of broad guidelines relating to quality teacher practices and represents the way we teach at Hillcrest Christian College. The framework reflects our College cornerstones and our commitment to a consistent and effective teaching approach so that all students have the best opportunity to learn and reach their full potential. Over the upcoming newsletters we will explore each of the 6 LAYERS OF LEARNING in more detail.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY Our first Layer of Learning is Professional Responsibility. Our teachers’ professionalism and high standard of ethical conduct is an important foundation to quality teaching. Professional Responsibility goes beyond the legal requirements expected by governmental bodies. It also includes the responsibility each teacher has to help fulfil the mission of Hillcrest Christian College, by upholding the College cornerstones of God centred education, academic excellence, integrity and evangelism.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FRAMEWORK Along with our Layers of Learning Framework we have also developed our new Professional Learning Framework. This gives our teachers guided opportunities to develop professionally. It demonstrates our culture of intentional, active learning, based on College directed and individually set goals in order to ensure the learning experiences and opportunities offered to our students live up to our motto of ‘Excellence in Christ’.

CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW “The kingdom of God is like a man on the search for excellent pearls. Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.” MATTHEW 13:45-46
