Fun Facts by Arav Kulkarni (601) Alan Turing, the creator of the enigma machine, also imagined a mechanism that would take in a strip of paper with filled-in squares and blank squares (or 1s and 0s) that would have completely different operations; this was one of the first ideas for computer code!

The Turing Test (also known as the “imitation game”) is when humans are given an experiment in which they are chatting (via text) with someone who they think is human, but in some of the cases, the chat person is actually a computer. The computer passes the test if it can fool the humans into thinking that it is human 1/3 of the time.

Kindness Candy Sale In honour of LGBTQ+ history month, the Inclusivity+ club will be selling small bags of candy during lunch recess on Tuesday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 27 in the Kemper Lounge during lunch recess. Minimum $1 donation per bag of candy. Share a little kindness by buying candy for a friend! Each bag contains a secret motivational message. Proceeds will go to “Speqtrum” to help disadvantaged LGBT youth in local communities. @theHelm - page 5

Davis Schneider by Katie Stubbs (705)

Debut

Key Info

Davis Schneider made his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays on August 4th in Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. At his first major league at bat he hit a home-run. He is the fourth Blue Jays player ever to hit a home-run at their first MLB at bat. He contributed a lot to the series after this.

Height - 5’9” Birthday - January 26, 1999 Age - 24 years old Birthplace - Berlin, NJ Debut - August 4th 2023 Position - second base

Performance Since then, his batting average has dropped significantly down to 270. This is still an amazing average but it may drop further. He has done well, though, and gave the Jays a spot in the wildcard playoffs. He also was a part of the Jays’ 26-man roster when they entered the wildcard series against the Twins.

Grade 7 Orange Shirt Day creations French class

~~Grade 6 E-Week~~ YMCA Camp Ki-Wa-Y Camp Ki-Wa-Y was a great experience for most Grade 6s, so that’s why I am going to try my best to tell everyone about it. Maybe this will bring back memories for the older students or give younger students the chance to look forward to this experience. I can’t predict the future and know what will happen, but you can lie back, relax and enjoy reading about the experience I had at Camp Ki-Wa-Y.

On the day of the trip, I woke up in the morning, brushed, ate, changed and got driven to my bus stop. Then I boarded my bus and sat, filled with excitement. I arrived at HSC and saw everyone gathered at Foxcroft Circle, so I walked to my friends, laid my duffel bag on the floor beside my backpack and waited for the buses to come. Once they arrived, I handed my things to one of the helpers who put my stuff on the luggage bus. I then sat on the bus for the second time that day and waited. 75 minutes later, I saw the counsellors waving, and knew we had arrived. by Rohit Radhakrisnan (605)

Activities: Once we were all set up, with our stuff in the cabins, we were ready for our activities. We found out who was in our groups and set off. We did the following through our 2 days: archery, kayaking/ canoeing, high ropes (climbing), low ropes (obstacle course), shelter building, initiatives (working as a team), and fire starting. Meals: Camp Ki-Wa-Y provided us with very nutritious meals. We had access to a salad bar for lunch and vegetables to eat with our main course. The food we ate included the following: macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, burgers, French toast, and breakfast sausages.

The Climate Corner by the Green Team (Ainsley Douglas, 605)

Wildfires in Canada Hello, and welcome to the Climate Corner. In the Climate Corner this year, I will be releasing information on climate change, the effects of it around the world, and what we can do to help. In this issue I will be talking about the wildfires that happened over the summer. In the summer of 2023, there was a record number of wildfires in Canada. The wildfires were in Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia. Do you remember when we went out for recess and it smelled like burnt marshmallows? There where no marshmallows in Lawson Hall --- the smoke was drifting over from the wildfires all of the way in Quebec! Climate change is creating a longer wildfire season, which is intensifying the risk of fires. Climate change also creates more droughts, leading to dry conditions and making the wildfires more harmful. We can't simply go and put out the fires ourselves, but we can keep improving our ability to be friendly toward the environment and try to decrease climate change.

ENGLISH

Corner

TESSA TIERNEY (604) Hello MS and welcome to the first English Corner of the year! This week, in the spirit of Halloween, we’ll be looking at three ways to make your piece nice and spookified. Let’s go!

Adjectives Adjectives are a great and simple way to add depth to your story and get your reader immersed. Similes This is one of the easiest ways to describe something. Comparing two things can really help the reader paint a picture in their mind. Metaphors Metaphors are extremely useful, especially when you want to exaggerate something.

Dark Life Review (Book 1) by Charlie Chou and Tessa Tierney (604) Hi Middle School! Our names are Tessa and Charlie, and today we are going to review Dark Life by Kat Falls.

Dark Life starts with the main character’s introduction, Ty. At the start of the book, it’s pretty slow-moving, but if you wait, it starts to get really interesting. There are so many plot twists that we both had trouble figuring out what was happening almost all the time. But if you’re looking for a confusing and exciting book, Dark Life’s for you. Overall the plot is pretty good and kept us hooked.

This book received a lot of mixed reviews. On Google Books, Dark Life is rated 4.6/5. On Goodreads, it’s 3.9/5, and on DOGO Books it’s a 3.8/5. Charlie and I would rate it 3.5/5.

Wonder: Movie Review by Talia El-Fouly (602) Hi, I am Talia and here are my thoughts on the movie, Wonder. Wonder is an amazing movie. One reason for this is because Jack Will is a great character. Jack is my favourite character because I love the way he fights Julian in order to protect Auggie. It is so nice! I also love that during science class, Jack prevents Julian from working with Auggie. Another character I like is Summer. She is filled with joy. She is also Auggie's friend and tells Auggie, “ You can’t keep ignoring Jack, Auggie.” @theHelm - page 20

Idol Music Review by Charlie Chou (604) and Isabella Zeng (602) Hi! We are Isabella and Charlie, and we will review the song, “Idol” by Yoasobi. At some point in time, it blasted off the charts in the Billboard Global 200 and went to the No.1 spot, but now (at the time we’re writing this) it’s at 53 . This song is the opening theme for the popular anime, Oshi no Ko. This song is about Ai’s love for her fans, family, and friends and how she thinks she won’t ever love someone romantically. @theHelm - page 20

Song Reviews

Viann .W. and Sophie .CM. (804)

“Epic Disney Villains Medley” Peter Hollens feat. Whitney Avalon. - “Epic Disney Villains Medley” is a very interesting song. It starts off with Ursula and goes through all of the major villains with unique lyrics that come from their original songs.

“The Addams Family” - Andrew Gold - *Snap* *Snap* This song is used in the animated version of the Addams Family and was made for the Addams Family musicals. It has a very catchy opening tune.

“Beetlejuice: Beautiful Sound” - Alex Brightman - That beautiful sound is about Lydia and Beetlejuice scaring people. There are two versions of the song found out there. The one made for musicals and the online version.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas: This is Halloween” - Danny Elfman - This song is from a Halloween movie and introduces you to the Halloween world that Tim Burton created. @theHelm - page 21

PaintBrawl is a game mode where there are two teams: Blue & Orange. You are given a slingshot on your chest that you attack the Orange/Blue team with. If you destroy an opposing team member three times, they become Dead/Trash Monkey (weird name, I know). How to play the game? You swing your arms as seen in the picture above. It takes practice to get it right, but in a month, you will be faster than ever! Game Review by Bukayo Tiamiyu, 502

Gorilla Tag is a Popular Game available on VR & PC. In Gorilla Tag, you are a Gorilla with two arms and no legs. Right now as you are reading this, there are 6,000-7,000 people online right now! The Game is a bit complicated, but I’ll explain it in a short period. GAMEMODES & GAMEPLAY Gorilla Tag is split into four game modes. First, there is Casual. Casual is a game mode where you can just hang out with people or roleplay (School & FNAF are very popular). Then, there is Infection. It’s more intense than other game modes but less complicated. There is a lava monkey that tags you. If you are tagged, you become a lava monkey with the previous tagger. To win you have to be the last monkey tagged. Next, there is Hunt. Hunt is my favourite game mode because it's unique and very suspenseful. In Hunt, everyone has a different target. You also have a watch on your hand. On that watch, It Displays The color of your Target, Their Cosmetics, Their Name, & Even how Far away They are! If you tag the right target, they become dead (water monkey), and they can’t tag other monkeys. But someone might have you as a target, and Tag You. You have to run from them if they have you. And the best part is that you don’t know who has who! Lastly, there is PaintBrawl.

Cosmetics & Colour Codes There are hundreds of cosmetics to choose from. They are all in city, which is located beside clouds. Once in a while, the game updates and they add limited-time Cosmetics. Currently, there are volcano/lava Cosmetics. The developers usually add in some hats with some shirts/badges to match, but sometimes they add holdables (accessories you can hold) and umbrellas. Each monkey has a colour. To change your colour, go to the old computer and press the arrow button until you find a page that has numbers and colours on it. Press options 1, 2, or 3 to change the Red/Blue/Green of your monkey. You can also change your name. Press the arrow button once to get to the name page, then type in the letters of your desired name.

Now that I’ve finished this review, there’s one main thing I want to say: We should take time to appreciate what we have. Some people don't have games or technology, so it is advised you use it wisely. Cyberbullying is harmful. It can even feel worse than someone saying it to your face. It lowers people's spirits and ruins their day, so please, do not be toxic. And lastly, I’ll leave you with this: Monkeys Need To Swing,

School of Doom

Hello! My name is Aurora. Today is my first day of the School of Doom. I don't want to go, but it doesn't look like I have a choice.

School of Doom

Like the School of Doom? Hope you like your locker and the bits of paper and pencil tips in it!

Here I am: The School of Doom

By Isabella Zeng 602 and Ainsley Douglas 605

Hahaha! You’re locked in too!

Why is there a human being in my locker?!! If it's one of those cringy girls shoving you in, I will be mad. Anyways my name is Elias

Help me! Get me out!

We brought a new friend.

WHAT?

I can’t believe I turned Jade in to the teachers... I feel sorry for her

After Class ...

She’s going to the detention room, the basement!

Jade, please come to the office to get ready for detention.

And so we meet again...

That jump was impressive!

Aurora, Elias, please come to the office.

What happened!?

Honestly, I’m kind of creeped out by going down to a rickety old basement.

I heard there’s something cursed down there! It's supposed to make your eyes unfocused and dreamy like Heather’s eyes!

This is my first time in detention

~ er v i h ~S

Heather come to the office to get ready for detention. NOW!

After Detention...

Yes, we do.

Here it is... the entrance to the dreaded basement!

It’s rather fancy for the entrance to a human eating monster filled basement.

A capybara??!

The Life of a Turkey on Thanksgiving by Mahi Nathoo, 503 Hello! My name is Tom the Turkey. I am a standard bronze turkey and I live with my older sister Marie, who takes care of me. Tomorrow, it will be my second birthday. Unfortunately, tomorrow is also the day before Thanksgiving. On the day before Thanksgiving, the turkey farmer comes and chooses who to cook for Thanksgiving dinner. Last year, Mum was eaten, and the year before that my dad was eaten. Marie says that this year, it is her turn to be eaten. When me and my friend Terry from the neighboring farm heard this, we decided to somehow put a stop to it immediately. All right, I know what you all are thinking. “This is hilarious! How can two young turkeys stop a fully grown man?” Initially, Terry thought the same thing. When I brought this up, he said “Tom, you’re crazy! How are the two of us going to stop him?”

“No matter what, I will not give up.” After convincing Terry that we could save my sister, a plan began to form in my mind. The only reason why the turkey farmer would abandon all attempts to catch Marie would be if he couldn’t get to her. “Maybe,” I said, “we could somehow get the wooden beads from the shed, place them on the path to our pen…” “And the farmer will slip on them on the way to your sister!” said Terry. “Exactly!” I said. As Terry and I returned to our farms for lunch, I began to feel that I couldn’t do this. As soon as that thought popped into my head though, I pushed it down and began to strut towards the shed to get the beads. When I was halfway there, I heard footsteps coming towards me. “Well, hello there, turkey,” said the drawling voice of the turkey farmer. “You know what? I think that you are the perfect meal for Thanksgiving.” He grabbed me by the neck and brought me to the kitchen.

“Well, I suppose we’ll just have to do what we can. I am not letting him eat my sister for Thanksgiving dinner,” I said.

@theHelm - page 29

He tethered me to the countertop so I couldn't move and got out a humongous Williams Bird Knife. As soon as he got out the knife, I began hacking at the leather belt that fastened me to the table. I didn’t manage to do anything except turn the belt around so the buckle was on my side. When I realized that I could unfasten the belt by pushing the metal hook upwards, I did so immediately. When the farmer began to prepare the knife, I fled. I flew so fast that I felt that I could have raced a peregrine falcon diving and won. I flew straight into the shed, grabbed the bag of wooden beads with my talons, and landed on the path to the turkey pen. I slit the bag of beads open, poured them onto the pathway, and flew back to the pen. Luckily, I managed to do all this just before the farmer left the house. He ran down the stairs that led to the path, slipped on the beads, and fell onto his back hard. He let out a cry of pain, clutched his back, and vowed never to eat turkey ever again.

by Adam Yousif (501) New Brunswick is one of the many provinces of Canada. Located on the Atlantic coast they make a lot of money in fishing industries by selling them into the United States and Europe and around Canada. They have a lot of nature and some mild forests.
