E-week 2024 - Gr. 6,

7, 8

The Grades 6-8s and student leaders from Grades 11 and 12 had an amazing EWeek. The Grade 6 focus was getting a deeper connection in the HSC community. The Grade 7s worked on personal growth and stepping out of their comfort zones. The Grade 8 focus was on the question, “Who am I?” This helped us grow and work toward being better people, changing our mindset and viewing things differently.

BROMLEY ARMSTRONG

1926-2018

Bromley Armstrong was a community organizer and activist who emigrated from Jamaica to Canada in 1947 in search of more education and work opportunities. He planned to remain here just to complete his studies, but he chose to stay in Canada and made Toronto his home. He worked at a factory and started to notice that less than one percent of the work force was Black, maybe even half of that! It also wasn’t just what he saw - it was what people were saying to him That is why he joined and led more than two dozen others to “March on Ottawa” eventually helping Canada to introduce its anti-discrimination laws. Even after the law was set, however, not everyone followed it, but he never gave up his commitment to fighting for equality.

Chess Bots

What is a Chess Bot?

Chess bots have been better than humans at playing a game of chess since May 1997, when Kasparov, the greatest chess player of his age, was beaten 3 ½ - 2 ½ by Deep Blue. In this article you’ll learn what chess bots are, how they work, and some examples of chess bots today.

How Do They Work?

Chess bots work by looking at every move possible in the position, then looking at every move possible for their opponent from there, then looking at every move possible for them from there, and so on. How far down they are able to do this is their depth. If a chess bot only sees the current position and all of its possible moves, that’s a depth of one.

Question:

Do you have a pet? MAINE

I have a pet betta fish named Bluey. Bluey is the best. He has a very cool fish tank and loves hiding in the plants. Each month, Bluey has a special ornament that we keep in the middle of the tank to celebrate an upcoming holiday/season. For example, in October, he will have 3 scary pumpkins in his tank!

DIY Stickers S

Bukayo Tiamiyu 603

Have you ever wanted to get stickers for free? Have you always wanted to make your own sticker? Have you ever wanted to put thousands of stickers on your laptop just to look cool? Well look no further! This article is about all (or at least most) of the above!

Step 1: Draw (or print) your sticker design. Once you are done, colour it in (or just leave it how it is if you really want to).

Step 2: Get baking sheet paper and put tape more than the size of your design on it (sticky side on the baking sheet).

Step 3: Put your design on the area of the baking paper with tape on it and place your design in the middle.

Step 4: Put tape (sticky side on your design) all over your design and cut it out (make sure there is a small plastic rim around the sides of your design).

Easy(Gr.5)

A pirate hides his treasure on an island. He starts at a point that is 12 metres east and 8 metres north from a palm tree. He walks 10 metres west, then 6 metres south. How far is he from the palm tree now, and in which direction?

I will post the answers in next month’s @theHelm. Have fun!

Challenge: solve this without using a calculator!

Hard(Gr.7-8)

I am thinking of a number. First, square the number. Then, subtract 6, and multiply the result by 4. After that, add 2^5, and divide the result by 4. You will get 1523. What is the number?

le coin français

Gender-NeutralPronounsinFrench

Inclusive language is crucial in today's world, yet in languages like French, where gender is very important, being inclusive can be challenging.

As of November 2021, one of the most widely used French dictionaries, Le Robert, introduced the non-binary pronoun "iel" to its online edition. But I’ve realized many, including myself don’t know how to use it.

To incorporate "iel," one can employ the "point médian," for example:

- iel est souriant·e (They are smiley)

- iel est élégant·e (They are elegant)

- iel est intelligent·e (They are clever)

Or, one can write in a grammatically neutral manner using epicene adjectives:

- iel est agréable (They are pleasant)

- iel est chic (They are chic)

- iel est perspicace (They are perspicacious)

Traditionally, French grammar often defaults to the masculine form, potentially excluding women and non-binary individuals. Inclusive writing addresses this with the "median point":

- Les français·e·s mangent du fromage.

- Les ouvrier·ère·s ont fait grève.

Here are some other gender-neutral pronouns in French: Catey Chan 801 Lingoda

I hope these writing prompts inspire you.

1. A strange artifact has been unearthed deep within the jungle. You, along with five other explorers, race to track down the strange land that this artifact hints at.

2. Your favourite video game started glitching badly one day. The glitches get worse until the glitched inhabitants, objects, and locations from the game burst out of your console and scatter worldwide. What do you do?

3. You have found a strange pen that makes anything you write a reality. What will you write?

4. Imagine every belief ever that has been proven to be false is true. Earth is flat. The moon is made of cheese. Australia doesn’t exist! How would this change the world we live in?

5. Imagine that one day, you strangely forget everything you know. You don’t know how to walk, talk, or who your relatives and friends are. What happens next? And how did this happen in the first place?

6. Imagine jelly-like humans are corrupting humanity. There is one way to save everyone, however. What is the way to save everyone? And what happens?

I feed the squirrels in my backyard. I taught them to stand up on the windowsill and wait for a nut. There once was a squirrel named Patch who came there. I named her Patch because she had ringworm. Ringworm is a skin disease, which made her lose nearly all of her fur. Her tail began to look worse too, and the fur on it stopped growing. I was really worried about her, and then I discovered that a great thing to help cure ringworm is coconut oil. I began to feed her coconut-oil-covered nuts, and she got better. Her tail didn’t grow back, but the fur on it regrew a little bit. Now she has moved out of my backyard and lives at the walnut tree just down my street!

RabbitinaTopHat

Once upon a banana

“Hey, it’s ‘time’ not ‘banana’”

Oh, okay… Once upon a time… Good?

“Yeah”

There lived a rabbit in a top hat, named Jones. He lived in a sharpie 500 metres tall and ten feet wide His fur colour was a sort of purple-grey-brown-yellow-ptthhbbpp, and his best friend’s name was Gilbert. Gilbert was a mosquito-walrus bear whose house was a ten-foot-tall dead chicken

One time, Donkey the cat went missing So, Jones stole Gilbert’s car. Gilbert came, too. The Lamborghini broke down, so they rode a hand all the way to a wedding They ate the cake there and accidentally ate the bride, who was a slice of bread Then, they continued their quest for Donkey They charged into Wal-mart. They didn’t see him there, so they looked everywhere except Dung Place, the smelliest place in all of Lop-sided Mushroom (their world). Suddenly, while they were blowing up cars to summon a portal, 5000 octillion children, all named George, started singing “Let It Go” from Frozen Everyone-ever’s ears exploded from sheer pain Then, they grew back. They rode the hand to Dung Place, where they set up damp

“It’s ‘camp’!”

Sorry, camp

“Better.”

Early the next morning, blue and green dolphins woke everyone up by poking chihuahuas Then Jones and Gilbert saw a 20-foot-tall spoon with a door They went inside and saw “Toenail”, the evil Um thing Then they saw Donkey tied up So Gilbert and Jones did a triple-flipdouble-twirl-single-spin-kick-punch combo at Toenail’s face. Then he blew up! They cut the ropes with a thingamabobber and rode the hand home.

THE AND.

“Psst, ‘The End’”

Oh, yes

THE END.

For the backstories of the Georges and Toenail, you must wait for now ⏳⌛ but don't worry, “The Story of the Georges and Toenail” will be out in the next issue of @theHelm.

GAME REVIEW

William D’Hondt 805

If you have ever played a Zelda game released after A Link to the Past, you will know that Zelda games are packed with secrets, a beautiful world to explore, and thrilling combat.

This was the game that established all that.

Along with that, this game is packed full of content, with 26 unique items to use, 12 dungeons, and two worlds. This game was massive, especially for its time. This game also introduced staple items and events in the Zelda series, so it’s tough to wonder what the series would be like without this game. It is truly a masterpiece.

MOVIE REVIEW

HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE

Running time: 1 hr 59 mins

My opinion on the characters:

I find it quite interesting how each character has their own unique personality and differences For example, Markl is an energetic and bubbly child compared to the Witch of the Waste who is mysterious and evil.

Plot

The plot is well-written, organized, and has a unique and gorgeous art style. As we watch, we discover that Sophie has gained a curse. How will she get rid of it?.

Jurassic Park

Movie Review

We all know the famous movie Jurassic Park and there are already a lot of movie reviews for it... so that is a reason why I will also do a movie review for Jurassic Park!

Overall, i would say this is a really good movie

For its CGI effects, I’d give it a 9/10 Because they mostly used animatronics and only a bit of CGI in chase scenes, it’s -1 point, but it still realistic, so that is why I give it a 9/10.

Next up we have dinosaur design at 10/10. The dinosaur design, especially the T-rex, looks amazing They all look unique and still look like how they were found and relate to how they are known in skeleton form

Lastly, I’d rate the cars a 10/10. The detail on the cars is amazing, from the wranglers to the explorers... it puts the cherry on top!

Overall, Jurassic Park is an amazing movie

Kingdom of Ash and Briars Summary

Review

This book had an amazing plot that really blew me away. It was a tiny bit boring for the first chapter but after I read more, I was enraptured and could not stop reading. This book is a pageturner and spins the tales of Cinderella, Hua Mulan, and Sleeping Beauty in a beautiful and wonderful way. I would recommend this book for fans of fantasy, mystery, and fairytale retellings. I would definitely re-read, and I rate it a 8.5/10.

This is my book review for A Kingdom of Ash and Briars. A Kingdom of Ash and Briars is the first book in The Nissera Chronicles by Hannah WestIt is a mixture of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. It is a fantasy book that also has magic, retellings, fairy tales as some of the genres. It is about a 16-year-old orphan named Bristal, who finds out that she has magic and is now something called an Elicromancer. Being an Elicromancer is incredibly rare - so rare that in the entire world there were only two (now three) who exist. Suddenly, after learning about her powers, she is given a choice, one that has the world’s fate hanging in balance: she can choose good and serve the kingdoms to keep the balance or she can choose evil and learn bone-chilling things about her powers. Bristal has a terrifying choice and an incredibly important mission.

BOOK REVIEW

Review:

Fish In A Tree is amazing. The writing is descriptive, the plot is realistic, and so much more! This book is a musthave, and I highly recommend reading it!

In my opinion, Fish in a Tree is a great book for teaching kids what it's like to be neurodivergent. This book can help spread awareness of neurodiversity. Even though it’s old (2015), it can still impact even some people today.

In conclusion, I rate Fish In A Tree 4.7 stars out of 5. Resource

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/3 cup Nutella

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Grease two small ramekins, then dust with cocoa powder, shaking out any excess. Set aside.

Divide batter among the prepared ramekins. Place ramekins on a baking sheet, and bake in preheated oven for 12 minutes. You want to keep a close eye on these; all ovens run differently so remove them from the oven when the edges are set but the center still jiggles slightly.
