LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Hillfield Strathallan College is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabek, and other Indigenous nations to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes.
As members of the learning community at HSC, we are committed to honouring this covenant by working alongside our Indigenous neighbours and building a sustainable relationship with the land that we all cherish.

NAIYA AMIN ’24 FLUTE
Naiya has been a student at HSC for over 13 years, where she first began playing the flute in her Grade 6 music class. Through hard work and dedication, she has improved her playing tremendously.
Naiya was also a member of the Senior School Wind Symphony, where she practiced weekly to prepare different pieces and arrangements. You may have heard this group perform at other HSC events such as Remembrance Day, Carol Service, as well as Music Night.
All in all, Naiya is a student who has always found a great amount of passion in her learning. Throughout the course of this year, she has focused on her ear training through transcription as well as her sight reading abilities, allowing her to become a more wellrounded musician. Most importantly, she has made so many memories as a part of the Music Graduating Class of 2024, and hopes to be able to continue her musical journey even as she ventures off into a different career path.

“In memory, everything happens to music”
- Tennessee Williams, The Glass Menagerie
This quote is especially true for Mila, who took her first music class at just eight weeks old. Since then, she has learned six instruments.
Mila began piano lessons at three and later discovered musical theatre. Since Grade 4, she has participated in 12 productions with Innovative Arts and Firefly Theatre Academy. Highlights include roles as Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical. Her love for singing led her to join school choirs, the Hamilton Children’s Choir, and later the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth. With this choir, she performed at festivals across Ontario and with the Oakville Symphony Orchestra.
Inspired by the orchestra, Mila dedicated more time to instrumental music, learning drums, piccolo, and both acoustic and electric
guitar. She joined a songwriting and composing program, which fueled her passion for creating music.
With her primary instrument, the flute, Mila was selected to play at the Canadian Independent Schools Music Festival (CISMF) in 2023 and 2024, where she performed a solo at Roy Thompson Hall.
Looking ahead, Mila plans to explore music in university, continue composing and songwriting, and join a new community of musicians.
Mila thanks her family and music teachers Mike Byj, Heather Kilborn, Allan Gaumond, Ian Tulloch, and Scott McInnes for their inspiration.
AMI LI ’24
PERCUSSION, PIANO, VIOLIN
Amy Li’s passion for music began during her time at the Montessori School of HSC where she was first introduced to various types of instruments. She is studying RCM piano and also plays violin. Before entering Senior School, she played the trombone and baritone, which she thoroughly enjoyed. In Grade 9, she decided to learn a new instrument — mallet percussion, and continued onward with the Wind Symphony.
Through participation in festivals and galas, Amy has honed her performance skills. She played violin with the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra from 2018 to 2020, which strengthened her orchestral abilities through rigorous rehearsals. At Carol Service, she performed with friends and faculty from HSC. Despite having only one day of practice, she appreciated the opportunity to play for the Lunar New Year chapel. Amy also auditioned and performed at Roy Thomson Hall for the Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival String Orchestra in 2023 and 2024.
Amy considers music one of her most important well-being courses at HSC, as it helped her concentrate on math and science while nurturing her musical spirit. Furthermore, it allowed her to make music with peers and think creatively. Amy’s music career here has equipped her with valuable skills in transcribing songs and collaborating with likeminded musicians in the future.
Beginning this Fall, Amy hopes to continue playing music for fun at university.
