It’s alive! The electrifying stage adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches.
From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation, The Producers, comes this monster new musical comedy. The comedy genius, Mel Brooks, adapts his legendarily funny film into a brilliant stage creation – Young Frankenstein!
Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original as it will be to newcomers, Young Frankenstein has all the of panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair added. It will surely be the perfect opportunity for a production company to showcase an array of talents. With such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” Young Frankenstein is scientifically proven, monstrously good entertainment.
I am delighted to welcome you to one of the great HSC traditions: the Staff, Alumni, Parent Musical (SAP) Young Frankenstein. Since its humble beginnings more than 35 years ago, the SAP has become a unifying celebration of the passions, talents and creativity found across our College community. There is a unique energy and camaraderie that comes to life when alumni, family members, faculty and staff both past and present work together in the name of the arts.
Over my years here, I have had the pleasure to hear from many alumni, parents and staff about their fond memories working on the SAP. For many, it is an amazing opportunity to re-connect, to reminisce, and to build new friendships and memories. From the incredible costume team, to the technical crews and chorus performances, we are truly lucky to have such a dedicated team of volunteers. The commitment and pure joy associated with this production reminds me how special HSC is to so many people and also the power of theatre in bringing people together.
I have no doubt that you will enjoy the show and I hope that you will join me in thanking and congratulating the team of volunteers that put this amazing production together.
It is both a pleasure and a privilege to warmly welcome you to HSC’s 2022-2023 performing arts season in the Virtue-Fitzgerald Centre. Such wonderful moments await, and students and faculty alike cannot wait to share them with you!
The power with which the performing arts have come roaring back to life after being shuttered for so long is an undeniable testament to their intrinsic and vital role in our community and in our lives. As ever, the arts bring us together, and the passion and dedication that our HSC students bring to their involvement in productions and musical ensembles is truly inspiring to us all.
Whether you are here to see a theatrical or musical performance, we have no doubt that you will be delighted by the collaborative creative spirit that is thriving at HSC, and we are confident that you will be back for more!
Our productions of Clue! and The Wizard of Oz showcase the marvelous breadth of dramatic, comedic and vocal talent in the Senior School. Our Middle School performance of Oliver! Jr. is sure to be a tour-de-force display of the incredible energy and courage of our Middle School students, as well as the dedication and brilliance of the cross-College faculty team behind the scenes. This year, for the first time since 2019, a phenomenally talented crew of staff, alumni and parents will have you in stitches (or should I say staples?) with our truly zany and hilarious Staff, Alumni, Parent production of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein
If you are here to see a musical performance, our student ensembles from the youngest to the oldest grades will wow onstage, and you will be blown away (pun intended) by our Hot Jazz on a Cold Night concert. This year’s concert features our amazing HSC Junior and Senior Jazz ensembles, paired with a performance by Juno award-winning Toronto saxophonist Allison Au and her quartet, featuring special guest, our very own HSC alumni and internationally acclaimed trumpet player Darren Johnston ’91!
As you can see (and hear), the arts are alive and well at HSC. We are so thrilled that you are here with us to celebrate the beating heart of our HSC community through song, dance, drama and collective music-making. Enjoy the show!
When enthusiasm began to build for mounting another Staff, Alumni, Parent production, and the idea was proposed that I would direct it, I knew that it would be crucial to pick just the right show. Beyond the usual considerations of timeliness, cast size, suitability, and a smattering of good jokes, any show selected as a production needed to have something extra. It needed to be a show that would provide an experience as dynamic for the cast and crew as it did for the audience. Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein was the beast we felt we could bring to life!
For nearly fifty years, Young Frankenstein has been delighting and entertaining audiences as either a film or a stage production. Putting aside the campy costumes, merry melodies, and pithy puns, it is show about the importance of forging one’s own path in the world…with a little help from your friends. This made it a perfect vehicle for a community-building endeavour such as the SAP Musical.
Over the past five months, the cast and crew have met each week to learn lines, sing songs, and dare to dance…sometimes even in five inch lifts! It has been a delightful experience for all involved and I have enjoyed getting to know new members of the College community and reconnecting with former staff and students. I am incredibly grateful to have worked with this talented and enthusiastic group and I am very proud of all we have accomplished.
So, please light your torches, pick up your pitchforks, and get ready to howl along with our monstrously fun production of Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein
“Anybody can direct, but there are only eleven good writers.”
– Mel Brooks

Adam is delighted to be back on the HSC stage. Playing the lead role of Frederick in Young Frankenstein had been right at the top of his theatrical bucket list for about a decade, and he is very appreciative of the opportunity. He would also like to one day play the role of “Flustered Stock Broker” in Madoff the Musical. Maybe next time?
Mark is thrilled to be back onstage with HSC! As a parent of two HSC alumni, he has been involved in all of the SAP musicals dating back to Anything Goes in 2011. He is also active in local community theater, including productions of The Odd Couple (Oscar), Proof (Robert) and Mending Fences (Harry).
Amber Mills spent over a decade working as a performer across Canada before returning to her hometown of Hamilton to teach music in the Montessori School at HSC. Some of her recent local work has included The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady (Brott Festival), John & Jen and Ordinary Days (Hamilton Theatre Project) and God of Carnage (Firehall Theatre). She can be seen as Ms. Doney on TVO’s, Hi, Opie!
After a 33-year hiatus from acting, Nick is pleased to have been poked, prodded, and cajoled into auditioning for the role of Monster! First gracing the Devins Drive Public School stage as Bill in Glitches (1986) and again on the St. Andrew’s College stage as Servant in Romeo and Juliet (1990), Nick couldn’t quite kick the acting bug. Inspired by a decade of HSC students who have performed without fear, he feels honoured to be able to share their stage. Nick thanks his partner Miguel for his endless (and much-needed) patience and his family for putting up with the evolution of the Monster groan from the basement lair. Rrrrrrowr!
Allison Sekuler (alum parent, past HSC Board member) is thrilled to be back for another HSC SAP production, especially because Young Frankenstein is her all-time favourite movie. Her past roles at HSC include Grandmama in The Addams Family, and Duchess Estonia Dulworth in Nice Work if You Can Get It. She’s grateful for her husband and kids (both HSC lifer grads, 2016 and 2020) for their support, and for the amazing HSC cast and crew.
Czerny is excited to be a part of Young Frankenstein since her last debut on stage 17 years ago! When she’s not on stage, she is a parent/cheerleader to her 3 year old son, who is a bundle of joy and energy. You may have seen her at your local news channels when she wasn’t too busy shooting commercials or planning fashion shows. Nowadays, life is a little quieter as she focuses on her family and her day job as a digital marketer. She wants to thank her wonderful husband for supporting her dreams of having one more 15 seconds of fame in the limelight. Even if it means playing the village idiot.
Nina is thrilled to be performing in Young Frankenstein! Nina is a parent of two children in the Montessori school. She has an eclectic background in classical vocal performance, aviation, and psychology. In her spare time, you can find her reading, playing piano, and running along the waterfront.
Caitlin is a third generation HSC alumni, class of ’09. As HSC alumni, she played Jeannie Muldoon in Nice Work if You Can Get It and a choral member in The Addams Family. As a student, she was part of several productions including The Wizard of Oz, Bugsy Malone, Really Rosie, Rockasocka, The Sound of Music, Hello Dolly, and A Christmas Carol. She appears next to her father, John (class of ’75), and mother Toni from the costume crew.
Michael is excited to be joining friends old and new in this year’s production. As a parent, Michael’s first foray into the Staff, Alumni and Parent productions began with The Addams Family followed by Nice Work If You Can Get It. Most recently, Michael brought further uncertainty to the question of paternity as “Bill” in Theatre Ancaster’s production of Mamma Mia! He extends his sincere gratitude to all those involved in this year’s terrific production as well as to his (endlessly accommodating) family.
49-ish, 6’4” male with GSOH, this HSC teacher is more versed in tech than syncopated rhythm: seeks leading man. Must be into crochet, cats and misplacing things. This is Alex’s second performance in an HSC production, having been super fabulous as Lucas in The Addams Family. He’s best known for his role in CBC’s Street Cents where he was responsible for dropping things into a pit. For a guaranteed good time, please speak with Inspector Kemp.
Jen is a current teacher and School Life Coordinator in the Junior School. She is the mom of one former and one present HSC student and enjoys carving out time for herself to embrace her creativity. Jen delights in laughing alongside her cast mates on stage as they stumble through rehearsals! Jen debuted on stage at HSC as a passenger in Anything Goes and later as an elevator attendant in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. She also worked behind the scenes as the assistant stage manager for The Addams Family.
This is Pam’s first play at HSC over a 50-year relationship with the College. Her husband, Peter, spent his career there; Pam taught at HSC twice; her daughter Carrie is a current staff member and her granddaughter is a Montessori student. She thanks the hard-working staff and volunteers who have made Young Frankenstein possible!
Best known in HSC drama circles as “Rachel’s mom” (a.k.a Donkey/Genie’s mom), this parent of alumni and current student was inspired by the amazing talent and direction of the HSC production team. In the late 1900s, Yael played main roles in Fame, Bye Bye Birdie and Don’t Drink the Water. She is thrilled to be back on stage in the ensemble, with this incredible cast and crew!
Heather is a recovering criminal lawyer who is starting semiretirement with a return to her first love, the theatre, and her new love of tap dancing. She is the proud mom of a 2020 HSC grad. She hopes he won’t be too embarrassed by his mother. Again.
Alice is a parent of two little kids in M4 and M6, in the Montessori School. She received a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and she used to live in Holland, Germany, Austria and Italy before coming to Canada. She works at the Hamilton Conservatory For the Arts as Executive Assistant and she is greatly passionate about the Arts.
When not working as a mom to an HSC lifer, or at her paying gig in a library, Karin enjoys jigsaw puzzles and requesting to speak to the manager at restaurants. She took dance lessons once but the teacher suggested she “find someone else to bother” so she took up studying physics and the rest is history. She has previously performed in HSC’s production of Nice Work If You Can Get It, and is amazed they let her back.
When not teaching science in Senior School, Lara is spending time with her family and enjoying outdoor runs by the Grand River. Her love for music definitely has to do with her Brazilian roots. She is super excited to be part of this musical and to have fun with her new friends!
Mom to four amazing HSC alumni and devoted member of the musical chorus since 2011, Anything Goes. It’s a joy to be back sharing laughs with old friends and making new ones. Thank you to the incredible costume ladies, and everyone who coached, directed, choreographed and kept us organized! Many thanks to the talented cast, chorus and crew of Young Frankenstein - you’re all brilliant and made it so much fun to be involved!
Wendy is excited to be making her theatre debut. She is the proud parent of Jasmine, Grade 9, and Isabella, M9. She hopes to inspire her girls to step out of their comfort zone and have the courage to try new things. Hey kids, if Mom can sing and dance in front of a live audience, anything is possible!
Past credits include two grads (Chloe Castell ‘18, Mia Castell ‘20) and Nice Work if You Can Get It (Chorus, Speakeasy Thug, important prop mover). Moonlights in engineering when not chasing monsters with her villager pals. Thanks to the staff and magical costume team for their hard work and shaping us into a community!
Lisa is a current teacher and Vice Principal in the Junior School at HSC. She is the mom of two alumni lifers and has been involved in several of the SAP musicals. She debuted as a reporter in Anything Goes, a tap-dancing pirate in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, a zombie in The Addams Family, and a flapper with her hubby in Nice Work If You Can Get It. She enjoys strapping on her tap shoes and singing, although is definitely not gifted in either; however, working alongside the beautiful SAP community is what keeps her coming back for more. Enjoy the show.
Daniela is thrilled to join the mania of YF, her second HSC production. She’s always ‘putting on the ritz’ by volunteering, training at the karate dojo, and travelling. Deep love to husband Jason and daughter Clara ‘24. YF cast, crew, costumes: the moon will always shine, love to everyone – ‘til the next time
I am a former staff and parent at HSC, teaching here for 27 years in the Primary School. I have been part of the cast in all of the staff productions, and in the more recent productions that have included parents and alumni…. and I am still having fun! My gratitude to all of those who have taken on the organization and direction of all of these productions. You’re the best!
Emilia said “Si!” to a new life in Canada and taught Spanish at HSC for five years. Wanting to do something outside of her comfort zone, she debated whether to swim with sharks or perform in a musical. In order to inflict the maximum embarrassment on her sons, she chose the latter. Watch out for her wielding a pitchfork as she channels her inner Don Quixote in this, her debut performance.
John is a stalwart supporter of all things HSC. He has served on the Board of Governors, The Board of Trustees, and The Alumni Association. John has been part of every SAP musical since SAP’s inaugural production of Guys and Dolls! Young Frankenstein is a truly family affair for John as he is joined by his daughter Caitlin on stage for their third SAP production and his wife Toni assists with costumes, makeup and quick changes. John also assisted the production team in the financial planning of the production. John is a proud HSC Lifer along with his Father (Ben) and daughter Caitlin.
Vanessa is both an HSC parent and a teacher at the school. While she studied music in high school (way back when), this is the first time she has performed in a full length musical - so it’s a little terrifying! In her spare time, Vanessa enjoys mountain biking and gardening.
Through my 44 year association with HSC, beginning as the spouse of staff (Rick) and in due course, as a parent of two HSC graduates; a retired staff member; and now, the ‘Grannie’ of a current student, this will be my eighth SAP musical. I am thrilled to once again be amongst wonderful people, as we come together to share in the joy of this production.
Cathy is a long-time HSC parent and community volunteer, who is always ready to lend a helping hand. While it’s been many years since she performed in high school (in Italian no less!), she’s enjoyed HSC’s performances over the years and decided to give her passion another go. Could this be the start of something new? This is Cathy’s first performance in an HSC production and we’d bet it won’t be her last!
I first fell in love with theatre as a child in Wales, wide-eyed and beaming from the orchestra pit.I have been involved in all aspects of theatre from backstage to front of house and everything in between.I am a proud HSC parent of two children who have also enjoyed and enjoy performing on stage in the school musicals. I am so thankful to the SAP musical cast and crew, Brandon, Ona, Nora, and Brittany. It never ceases to amaze me how the stage brings people together in such a wonderful sense of community. Enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR I BRANDON VEDELEAGO ’98
In addition to being an HSC Lifer, Brandon Vedelago ‘98 teaches in the Senior School and has directed 23 shows during his career at HSC. Some of his favourite past productions include: Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar, Rumors, and Chicago. As a student at the College, his love of theatre was originally fostered under the mentorship of HSC’s Bryan Wylie and John Beaver. Brandon is thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented cast and crew on this raucous romp of a show and is grateful for the support of his family, including both of his parents who worked on the production.
Nora (Nolan ‘98) ticks all the boxes - Staff, Alumni and Parent! As Director of Arts, she is grateful to collaborate with this fabulous creative team in the place where her love of the performing arts was first sparked! As well as being mom to twin HSC Middle schoolers, Nora teaches instrumental music in the Middle and Senior Schools and has played in and directed many musical productions over the years. Outside of HSC, Nora maintains a busy freelance schedule as a trumpet player and directs the Hamilton Rising Stars Jazz Band. Bravo and good luck to all, it’s been a scream!
Ona has musically-directed, choreographed, and/or performed in sixteen musicals. Her favourite shows include The Addams Family and Little Shop of Horrors, so Young Frankenstein is right up her alley! As a word-nerd and avid speller, Ona felt perfectly typecast playing the lead in The Spelling Bee. She continues to revel in rhetoric by teaching English and running the Middle School student newspaper. You can catch her directing HSC’s next musical, Oliver JR.
Gordon Vanderwoude ’09 is an alumni of HSC as well as a faculty member, teaching math and science in Senior School. On the side, he is the Music Director of Faith United Church in Hamilton and a frequent rehearsal pianist for musical theatre groups throughout the GTA. Gordon is thrilled to be participating in HSC’s production of Young Frankenstein.
Brittany ‘11 is excited to be a part of her third SAP musical with her dad, Mark! She started attending HSC in the third grade and met her husband, Jacob, in the fifth grade. Brittany is now a dancing dentist in Burlington.
Brandon is a faculty member in the Senior School Technology department, as well as the resident theatre technical coordinator. His expertise in sound, lighting, and craftsmanship continue to support HSC productions and events from all four schools. You can catch his technical skills in many upcoming HSC student productions.
Andrew enjoys being “back in the headset” as puppetmaster - er - stage manager - at HSC; 25 years after he organized the purchase of the lighting console that got pitched last week. Prior to his brief hiatus, Andrew stage managed over 15 HSC productions in the 1990s. A banker by trade, he studied technical theatre in his undergraduate days and is delighted to be a part of this team which includes many friends both old and new. Andrew is chair of the HSC board of trustees, and dad of two Middle schoolers who can’t wait to see this show that has caused their parents to neglect them for months.
As a self-described HSC dinosaur, Gail has evolved from Parent to Grandparent over 43 years. After stints on the Parents’ Guild, Boards of Governors and Trustees, she landed in the Costume Department. Her involvement includes 90 HSC productions with the talented and dedicated “costume ladies”. She shares the Young Frankenstein fun with son Brandon ’98 (Director) and husband Bruno (Prop Guy).
LIGHTING & SOUND I NATHANIEL BROUGHTON ’22 I ALUMNI
Nathaniel is an alumni of HSC, where he began his theatre journey by acting in Middle School productions, including Annie Jr, Beauty and the Beast Jr, and Shrek Jr. He later transitioned to technical production in hSenior School, honing his skills in lighting and sound design for HSC shows. Nathaniel is thrilled to return to HSC as part of the production team for Young Frankenstein
PROP MASTER I BRUNO VEDELAGO I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Bruno ‘s connection to HSC goes back 43 years when he enrolled his first son, Chris ‘94, as a Montessori 3. His second son, Brandon ‘98 is now directing Young Frankenstein. In the interval, Bruno has taken time from practicing medicine, to enjoy being involved in the SAP musicals both on stage and behind the scenes.
SET CONSTRUCTION I GRAHAM CLEMENTS I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Graham has been involved in acting, set design and construction, and directing with most of the adult musicals since 1977, our first Staff Musical. Including our very talented alumni and parents to create ASP, SPA, or SAP, your choice, was a brilliant move and a great opportunity to work together on such an enjoyable venture. We hope you all enjoy our collaborative production, and next time come out to play.

JAYNE CONSTANTIN I PARENT OF ALUMNI
I am the mother of three alumni, Stefan, Kyle and Devan Constantin all lifers at HSC. I have been a volunteer at Hillfield Strathallan College for many years starting in Junior school classrooms and then as a member of the PA and Parents Guild. I began volunteering with costumes when my boys were involved with musicals in Middle School and Senior school.
EEVA JONES I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Eeva Jones started helping with costumes in 1995. She is the parent of three alumni, Nathan ’07, Sharaya ’10, and Kai ’12. Eeva enjoys working with her fellow costume ladies and the creative challenges of helping bring magic to the HSC productions.
TATE KAMPS ’16 I ALUMNI
Tate Kamps: As a grad of HSC and its stage, Tate had plenty of experience watching the Costume Crew work their magic and she was eager and grateful for the chance to lend a hand for this production!
EARLA KWOK I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Earla has been sewing and sorting costumes for HSC productions since 2008. She is thrilled to be part of such a fun show like Young Frankenstein, and work alongside the wonder women in the costume department.
BONNIE LENDRUM I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Mother of Luc (2007) and Mathew (2010). Past president of the Parents’ Guild; HSC Builder; writer; possibly a milliner in a former life; a proud member of the “Costume Ladies” since 2011.
MARTA NESPOLI I PARENT OF ALUMNI
My theatre experience was limited to a seat in the audience until I naively answered a call for sewing help about 14 years ago; I entered another dimension! As part of the Costume Crew, it is my great fortune to share the company of all the talented people working both in front of, and behind the scenes.
KATHRYN RUMBOLD I PARENT
Kathryn loves to sew. Kathryn needed an outlet. Fortunately the “Costume Ladies” rescued her, and her family, from even more home sewing. Her alumni son, and current student daughter always love the HSC musicals and dramatic presentations and wish all in this production the very best!
TONI SIMPSON I PARENT OF ALUMNI
Toni is delighted as a parent of alumni and costume volunteer to participate within the HSC community and this fun production of Young Frankenstein. Working alongside friends from the parents of alumni in the costume room, Young Frankenstein also allows Toni to share family time with her husband John and daughter Caitlin, who are cast members. Have fun and enjoy the trip to Transylvania
NANCY WANDS I FORMER STAFF
After many years backstage with Middle School musicals, Nancy joined the “Costume Ladies” full time in 2010, upon retirement from teaching. She loves to work with the students (and adults) in the many HSC productions. Nancy has also been a cast member in the SAP shows since 1979.
JOYCE WILTON I PARENT OF ALUMNI
I have been a member of the amazing “costume ladies” since 2008. I am a parent of alumni and two of my sons (Brandon and Joshua ’15) now work for the school and are part of this production team as well. I am looking forward to watching Young Frankenstein come alive!
THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO DONATED TO HELP THIS SHOW COME TO LIFE!
