Voices of the Past

Voices of the Past

Links of a Broken Chain

Wings that bear us back to Times That cannot come again. Yet God forbid that we should lose The echoes that remain.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Benediction

Unto God’s gracious mercy and protection we commit ourselves. The Lord bless us and keep us. The Lord make His face to shine upon us and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up the light of His countenance upon us, and give us Peace, both now and evermore.

The College Prayer

Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward save that of knowing that we do Thy will. Amen.

The College Hymn

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; To his feet thy tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing?

Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same for ever; Slow to chide, and swift to bless.

Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness.

Father-like, he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes.

Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows.

Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him, Dwellers all in time and space.

Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace.

Morning Has Broken

Morning has broken

Like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken Like the first bird.

Praise for the singing!

Praise for the morning!

Praise for them, springing Fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain’s new fall

Sunlit from heaven, Like the first dewfall On the first grass.

Praise for the sweetness Of the wet garden, Sprung in completeness Where his feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning

Born of the one light Eden saw play!

Praise with elation, Praise every morning, God’s re-creation

Of the new day!

Morning has broken

Like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken Like the first bird.

Praise for the singing!

Praise for the morning!

Praise for them, springing Fresh from the Word!

As the Deer

As the deer pants for the water, So my soul longs after you. You alone are my heart’s desire, and I long to worship you. You alone are my strength, my shield; To you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart’s desire, And I long to worship you.

One Planet, One People

We all live in a dream of one world, hoping that one day we will love as we were meant to love.

We all live in a dream of one world, hoping that some day we will live as we were meant to live, as one planet, one people, please God, we may achieve it, One planet, one people, please. One planet, one people, please God, we may achieve it. One planet, one people, please.

O Healing River

O healing river, send down your waters, send down your waters upon this land.

O healing river, send down your waters, and wash the blood from off the sand.

This land is parching, this land is burning, no seed is growing in the barren ground.

O healing river, send down your waters,

O healing river, send your waters down.

Let the seed of freedom awake and flourish, let the deep roots nourish, let the tall stalks rise.

O healing river, send down your waters,

O healing river, from out of the skies.

God of the Sparrow

God of the sparrow, God of the whale, God of the swirling stars, How does the creature say Awe, How does the creature say Praise?

God of the earthquake, God of the storm, God of the trumpet blast, How does the creature cry Woe, How does the creature cry Save?

God of the rainbow, God of the cross, God of the empty grave, How does the creature say Grace, How does the creature say Thanks?

God of the hungry, God of the sick, God of the prodigal, How does the creature say Care, How does the creature say Life?

God of the neighbour, God of the foe, God of the pruning hook, How does the creature say Love, How does the creature say Peace?

God of the ages, God near at hand, God of the loving heart, How do your children say Joy, How do your children say Home?

O God Our Help in Ages Past

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home;

Under the shadow of thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.

A thousand ages in thy sight Are like an evening gone, Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Be thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.

Lord of the Dance

I danced in the morning when the world was begun, And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun; And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Chorus

Dance, dance wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he; I’ll lead you all wherever you may be, I will lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, But they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; They came with me and the dance went on.

Chorus

They cut me down and I leap up high: I am the life that’ll never, never die;

I’ll live in you if you’ll live in meI am the Lord of the Dance, said he.

For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth, For the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies. Lord of all, to thee we raise This our grateful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour

Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon and stars of light, Lord of all, to thee we raise This our grateful hymn of praise.

For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild, Lord of all, to thee we raise This our grateful hymn of praise.

For each perfect gift of thine

To us all so freely given, Graces human and divine, Flowers of earth and buds of heaven, Lord of all, to thee we raise This our grateful hymn of praise.

Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.

Hymn to Freedom

When ev’ry heart joins ev’ry heart and together yearns for liberty, that’s when we’ll be free.

When ev’ry hand joins ev’ry hand and together molds our destiny, that’s when we’ll be free.

Any hour, any day, the time soon will come when we will live in dignity, that’s when we’ll be free.

When ev’ry one joins in our song and together singing harmony, that’s when we’ll be free.

Joyful, Joyful

Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, Opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.

All thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heaven reflect thy rays; Stars and angels sing around thee, Centre of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flowery meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Well-spring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Thou our Father, and our Mother, All who live in love are thine

Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine

Here I am Lord

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry: All who dwell in deepest sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Refrain

Here I am, Lord, is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them. Who shall I send?

Refrain

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them, my hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send?

All Things Bright and Beautiful

Refrain

All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings:

Refrain

The purple-headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset and the morning, That brightens up the sky:

Refrain

The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them every one:

For the Fruit of All Creation

For the fruit of all creation, Thanks be to God.

For the gifts to every nation, Thanks be to God.

For the plowing, sowing, reaping, Silent growth while we are sleeping, Future needs in earth’s safe-keeping, Thanks be to God.

In the just reward of labour, God’s will be done. In the help we give our neighbour, God’s will be done.

In our world-wide task of caring

For the hungry and despairing, In the harvests we are sharing, God’s will be done.

For the harvests of the Spirit, Thanks be to God.

For the good we all inherit, Thanks be to God.

For the wonders that astound us, For the truths that still confound us, Most of all that love has found us, Thanks be to God.

Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Make me a channel of your peace: where there is hatred, let me bring your love; where there is injury, your healing power, and where there’s doubt, true faith in you. Make me a channel of your peace: where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light, and where there’s sadness, ever joy. O Spirit, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood and to understand, to be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace: it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving to all that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

Simple Gifts

‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free, ‘tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, and when we find ourselves in the place just right, ‘twill be in the valley of love and delight.

Chorus

When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed. To turn, turn, will be our delight, ‘Till by turning, turning, we come round right.

‘Tis the gift to be gentle, ‘tis the gift to be fair, ‘tis the gift to wake and breathe the morning air, to walk every day down the path that we choose, ‘tis the gift we pray we may never lose.

Chorus

Tis the gift to be knowing, ‘tis the gift to be kind, ‘tis the gift to wait and hear each other’s mind, and when we speak our feeling it may come out true, ‘tis the gift for me and the gift for you.

Chorus

Tis the gift to be loving, ‘tis the best gift of all, like a warm, spring rain bringing beauty when it falls, and when we use this gift we may come to believe it is better to give than it is to receive,

Once in Royal David’s City

Once in Royal David’s City, Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby, In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on, To the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars, his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

The silent stars go by: Yet in the dark streets shineth

The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee to-night.

For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth!

How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven: No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem

Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

Refrain

Joy to the World

Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns; Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Silent Night

Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight: Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing alleluia, Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born.

Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, No crib for His bed

The little Lord Jesus

Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky

Looked down where He lay

The little Lord Jesus

Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing

The poor Baby wakes

But little Lord Jesus No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus Look down from the sky And stay by my side, ‘Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever

And love me I pray Bless all the dear children

In Thy tender care And take us to heaven

To live with Thee there

Chapel A LIVING TRADITION

Hillfield Strathallan College (HSC) has no formal religious affiliation, but for over a century, students and faculty have participated in regular non-denominational Chapel Assemblies. Recognizing the importance of community building, as well as the promotion of ethical behaviour and a shared sense of purpose, Chapel Assemblies involve students from all four schools and occur every Friday morning.

Led by the Head of College and involving the Prefects, other students and members of the HSC community, Chapel Assemblies are important College traditions that take into account the cultural and religious diversity of our current community. They also provide us with a valuable opportunity to celebrate student accomplishments and to acknowledge important events in the life of the College. Special Chapel Assemblies, including Prefect Installation, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Carol Service and other occasions highlight our school year.
