COURSE DESCRIPTION

Using technology for the purpose of communication, you will explore the skills and practices that are shaping your generation. This course introduces students to communication technology from a media perspective. Students will work in the areas of TV/video and movie production, audio production, print and graphic communication, photography, interactive media and animation. Student projects may include computer-based activities, but will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communication technology, and will explore secondary and postsecondary education and training pathways and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will develop knowledge and skills as they design and produce media projects in the areas of live, recorded, and graphic communications. These areas may include TV, video, and movie production; radio and audio production; print and graphic communications; photography; digital imaging; broadcast journalism; and interactive new media.

Students will also develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will explore college and university programs and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course enables students to further develop media knowledge and skills while designing and producing projects in the areas of live, recorded, and graphic communications. Students may work in the areas of TV, video, and movie production; radio and audio production; print and graphic communications; photography; digital imaging; broadcast journalism; and interactive new media. Students will also expand their awareness of environmental and societal issues related to communications technology and will investigate career opportunities and challenges in a rapidly changing technological environment. Technology is an important aspect of historical and social development. In a society immersed in media, it is important that we have an understanding of how to analyze the content and perspective of the information that we are exposed to and how it is delivered to us.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

An exciting course where students work to capture 10 months of school life across four schools, within 300 pages. Not an easy task! This course enables students to further develop media knowledge and skills while designing and producing projects in graphic communications. Students will focus on digital photography, graphic illustration, and journalism techniques as they develop a theme, organize and manage the production of the school yearbook.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course examines communications systems and design and production processes with emphasis on television, video and film production. Students will create, manage and distribute complex electronic, graphic, recorded or audio-visual projects independently and in project teams. This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, solo and ensemble performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures.

MUSIC - INSTRUMENTAL JAZZ

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Experienced musicians who are looking to expand their understanding of music and performance experience are able to apply for admission to the Senior Jazz course. Upon completion of a successful audition, students will focus their development of performance and understanding of music theory to include the stylistic elements of jazz, jazz harmony, improvisation, and transposition. Analysis of music focuses on the various contributions of jazz pioneers to help gain a better understanding of the authentic performance practices. The class has two ensemble components: a traditional jazz orchestra and the HSC Wind Symphony. These two ensembles perform extensively throughout the year in the HSC and local communities. Upon completion of the course, students will have a better understanding of the various ways in which music could fit into their professional lives.

This course develops students’ artistic knowledge and skills through the performance of vocal music. Students will perform appropriate works from vocal ensemble repertoire and contemporary solo vocal works in popular styles. Students apply the creative process when performing appropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ the critical analysis processes when reflecting on, responding to, and analizing live and recorded performances. Students consider the function of music in society and the impact of music on individuals and communities. They explore how to apply skills developed to their life and careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In Grade 10, students will learn the design process and design programs and apply this knowledge to 2D and 3D designs, renders, and hands-on prototypes. Programs learned and used include SketchUp, Blender, and Illustrator. Students will have the option to complete projects in career paths such as Architecture, Engineering, Character Design, and Interior Design. This course focuses on creativity, procedure and technology.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a specialized course that builds on the general skills learned in Grade 10 and allows students to pursue their own interests. They can specialize in one discipline that follows career paths: Architecture, Engineering, and Character Design. Students will learn SketchUp, AutoCAD, Inventor and Blender depending on their career choice. Students will use the wood shop to complete a hands-on collaborative project that fully explores professional documentation and process.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In Grade 12, students take control of the course by completing customizable projects based on their career interests. The focus shifts from learning new programs and processes to completing professional and nuanced projects. Hands-on construction will be a focal point, as students will use the 3D printer, laser cutter and wood shop to construct and display multiple, functioning models.

To connect their learning together, students will plan, design, construct and present their work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will build on previous explorations in art, and will have more time and freedom as they dive into their projects. They will need to be creative and willing to explore their interests and expand their skills. Grade 10 art has a focus on the element of value. Throughout the course, students will explore value through colour theory, dry-point printmaking, soapstone or plaster sculpture, and tonal drawing and collage.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, students will work to further explore their creativity through some new mediums and techniques. There will be lots of freedom and opportunities for students to express themselves. The grade 11 course begins with an emphasis on place. Students will create maps and paintings from their memories of places they have been and also some they may never visit. Imagination is welcome in these projects! Students will create paintings, drawings, stencil prints, found object sculptures and mixed media compositions.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to help students create a portfolio. Students will decide on a theme for the year and create a website or blog to document their process, as well as their finished work. Their site will act as their digital portfolio. Students will explore figure drawing, abstract paper sculpture, architecture, mixed media photo transfers, and silkscreen printmaking.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will analyze models of effective writing; work with published authors, use a workshop approach to produce a range of written pieces; and identify and use techniques required for specialized forms of writing. This course will give students the tools they need to be better writers. They will also complete a self-directed independent study project and investigate opportunities for publication and for writing careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course challenges students to rethink their worldview as young, truth-seeking activists during an age of “fake news” and misinformation. The topics and content of this course are curated by students, for students. We decide together what to study through a trio of thematic units: sustainability, globalization and social justice. Students will listen to and learn from various experts and each other to position themselves for public presentation and/or social innovation at HSC. Ultimately, the purpose of this course is to inspire personal growth through fact-based research, inclusive conversation and meaningful action. This is also an inquiry course that prepares students for post-secondary studies in social sciences. It will teach them how to learn and share academic knowledge. We focus on the essential skills and work habits to survive and thrive in university, which is useful for other courses and the modern workplace.
