LOSANI LAWRIE TENNIS COMPLEX

2022 DONOR REPORT

A special report prepared for: The Lawrie Family

December 2022

THANK YOU LAWRIE FAMILY

The Losani Lawrie Tennis Complex has become a cherished space for many in our community. Thanks to you, these courts became a safe haven where students, staff and friends could come together with space to physically distance while simultaneously forging deep connections over their love for the game of tennis. It is truly a special place and a gift that continues to give to HSC and the wider community.

As you’ll read in this update, The Losani Lawrie Tennis Complex has an even wider circle of influence thanks, in part, to our partnership with ACE Tennis and the Ontario Tennis Association. Being able to share this top-tier facility with passionate players across the region is directly tied to the goals outlined in our updated Strategic Plan, including “community connections” and “a boundless campus”, and brings enormous value to the College as an institution of distinction.

As we set out to transform HSC through our Campus Master Plan campaign, we have positioned the courts as central to our athletic landscape. Aspirations to evolve and expand use of the courts year-round remain a long-term goal and we look forward to seeing the facility grow its capabilities in the years to come.

Thank you again for bringing this incredible dream to life and I hope you enjoy reading about just how much of an impact you’ve had on our community.

Sincerely, Marc

As the head of HSC’s athletics programming, I am eternally grateful for the gift of The Losani Lawrie Tennis Complex. It has become a staple in our physical education curriculum and continues to benefit HSC’s competitive, recreational and classroom tennis teams. During the pandemic, when it became risky to gather indoors, the tennis courts provided a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.

During our first homecoming in years, we were able to bring alumni, students, parents, friends and family together on the courts for a friendly competition that brought out the true Trojan spirit in players. Today, many of our youngest students are finding a love for tennis thanks to your gift and the leadership of senior student players. We received great feedback on our after school program that brought students from the Montessori and Junior Schools out to learn tennis fundamentals and build their teamwork abilities. As you’ll read in this report, our tennis teams continue to improve their game and prove that a passion for sport lends a positive influence on all aspects of their lives.

I anticipate the demand for tennis programming to continue to grow both within our student body and beyond. With the support of our ongoing partnership with ACE Tennis and the beautiful facilities provided by you, HSC is positioned to be a leading provider of tennis instruction in the area. None of this would be possible without you. Thank you again for investing in us and for giving our community such an incredible place to play.

Sincerely,

ACTION AT THE COMPLEX

TENNIS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

Every day, HSC students improve their physical, social and emotional development through HSC’s physical education curriculum at The Losani Lawrie Tennis Complex. Having access to this top-tier facility has helped our educators expand the diversity of their lessons, and provided opportunities for students new

to the game, the chance to explore the thrill of tennis. From unstructured outdoor scrimmages at recess to friendly competition among teams at house intramurals, students learn to apply both physical and mental strategies on these tennis courts.

2022 SPRING FAIR

COMMUNITY TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT HOMECOMING

The HSC community holds a special place for tennis during our annual Homecoming event. One of the few sporting events where members of all ages can participate, the HSC Community Tennis Tournament offers players of all skill levels the opportunity to make new connections and enjoy the beautiful facilities that you’ve provided. This year’s event was one for the books, with more than 30 players competing for bragging rights and their name engraved on the esteemed Losani Lawrie Cup.

WINDSCREEN UPGRADES

With our campus located on top of the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, we have the pleasure of experiencing many a windy day. Over the summer of 2021, we installed new windscreens across all four fence lines of the tennis complex, beautifully designed with the Trojan emblem as a way to minimize weather interference and showcase HSC’s athletic pride. The windscreens are installed from April to October every year.

“Even though it is a very short season, I believe all of the players got the chance to experience the tournament. I have seen a lot of growth from all of my teammates especially in effectively communicating and supporting each other. I can’t wait to see what this team can do in the future.”

- Hanson Liu, Grade 12

“I loved seeing the team grow together throughout our semester and watch each individual gain a love for the sport. I had the ability to spread my love for tennis with my peers and watch them understand why I’ve played for 10 years.”

- Alex Losani ’22

“This is the first time I’ve played tennis competitively and I can say it’s the most fun I’ve ever had. Coming out and playing tennis with your friends was the best, and this season was an amazing experience.”

’22

“I was first recommended to join the tennis team by Alex and Dylan. Haven’t played tennis or been a part of an HSC team in a long time. I was anxious to play. Going out to the first practice I immediately felt comfortable and became friends with all my teammates. Going out to practices after school was always fun to play and chat with my peers. My favourite part of tennis was the away games where we could take the bus, get some snacks, listen to music and have an amazing day. Me and Dylan were undefeated on the road winning two of our games. Cheering our teammates on and just enjoying the warm weather was better than I could have imagined. I made some new friends and had a great time these last weeks of playing tennis. Overall it was just an amazing experience to have some fun and meet some friends.”

THE PLAYERS' PERSPECTIVE
FROM
...

HSC TENNIS TEAMS

HSC’s Competitive Tennis teams have shown great skill, commitment and perseverance in the face of a challenging few years. Emerging from a hiatus due to COVID restrictions, HSC’s Senior Boys, Junior Boys and Junior Girls teams made great strides in 2021. Our Senior Boys team were the rock of our younger teams and the ones to look up to as they supported our Junior players in preparation for their events. The Junior Girls placed fourth at CISAA while two Junior players, Ethan Tiong and Sonalu Parasu, made their OFSAA Tennis Open Mixed Doubles debut. They competed in a semifinal match and a consolation semifinal match, playing in the Open Division with no age categories. As their run and the day came to a close, our Athletic Director, Paul Masotti captured it well, “With two more years of HSC tennis, there’s no telling what these players will achieve.”

OFSAA MIXED DOUBLES DEBUT

“It started in the tryouts and on the first day of rain, we sat in a class and began to get to know each other. This was the start of a great season of competing. While we were not able to win and achieve the desired results it was a lot of fun competing among peers and the experience was well worth the effort. After CISAA I competed in OFSAA mixed doubles with Sonali. It was fun playing doubles as a change of pace, I usually play singles so it was fun getting to play a different style! To end this reflection I would like to end with a quote. ‘The whole secret lies in confusing yourself, so that the enemy cannot fathom our real intent.’

- Sun Tzu, Art of War”

- Ethan Tiong, Grade 9

“I had a great experience last year playing for our school’s tennis team. I made great friends and I’ve been able to further develop match strategies against a variety of different types of players. OFSAA was good fun, and it was great to represent our school in a sport that I love.”

- Sonali Parasu, Grade 10
