Welcome to our latest edition of HarbouRnews Summer 2020. We trust this finds you safe and well. This is the window on our world, illustrating our expanding activities, our growing team of passionate and extraordinary people, delivering great client service. Although we understand that everyone has been impacted by the repercussions that coronavirus has created, we are all trying our best to adapt and evolve our way of life, leisure and work.
The partners have really appreciated the incredible efforts of all of our staff around the world, who have done an amazing job during challenging times. The positive attitude and extraordinary efforts to go the extra mile have been widely applauded across our fleet.
The Hill Robinson team working alongside the fleet captains and crew have stayed in excellent contact, with successful voyages supported by the shore team coordinating crew travel, port clearances and solving many problems on a daily basis. We have all adapted to the new normal, with routine daily and weekly video calls, making working from home highly efficient and creating a fresh camaraderie that will carry over into normal office working. At Hill Robinson we have new systems to support a consistent strategy of client focus alongside our safety and security systems. Our customers will appreciate how a yacht management company like ourselves, experienced in risk assessments, coping with government regulations and finding positive solutions, could not be better equipped to take on the coronavirus challenge. At the same time our business development strategy has resulted in two new directors joining the team and a number of new staff in different offices around the world. Moravia Yachting has expanded with extra experienced team members, we have increased our levels in crew training and anticipate a lot more for 2020. So despite the negative consequence of the coronavirus plight, there has never been a better time to enjoy your yachting, at its safest and probably with the least impact of mass tourism. Cruising secluded and beautiful places will be especially rewarding in 2020. We trust you stay safe, but still enjoy and treasure those precious yachting moments. Our very best wishes for a healthy and safe summer. Nick Hill, Partner

Following the highly successful Hill Robinson seminar and team building event in 2018, the 2019 event was another opportunity for industry leader Luxury Hospitality to dovetail with the Hill Robinson team worldwide to further enhance a raft of communication and management skills to assist in reaching out to all suppliers and industry colleagues with a coherent and confident voice.
Having so many staff together at one event enabled some ten offices to showcase dynamic presentations on the development of services and operations in their global locations, all kicked off by a vibrant opening presentation from the Partners on the first morning. A series of intense break-away sessions also was a perfect educational opportunity for teams to discover how skills and services in the group can be intertwined and benefit the overall operational efficiency, enhancing our customer service. The event was also a perfect time to showcase the Moravia Yachting business model which will become an important client sales and charter operation in 2020 and beyond. The exceptional growth in staff over the last year created a much bigger gathering supported by excellent AV systems and video links and set the pace for the next event.

Sales and Marketing Addition After a high profile career spanning several luxury markets, Kurt has spent the last five years as marketing and commercial director with some of the yachting sector’s key charter and sales brokerage businesses – and now joins us as the Sales and Marketing Director. Kurt brings a wide range of experience to the role including the hands-on operations of dealing with elite clients, orchestrating major brand improvements, and creating compelling yacht marketing campaigns.

KURT FRASER SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR
Kurt will use his refined expertise to accelerate the charter and sales brokerage operations within the Hill Robinson Group, including the strategic positioning of Moravia Yachting as an emerging boutique brokerage business. Kurt explains: “With the solid foundations built by the partners and directors of Hill Robinson, across practically all key areas in the superyacht client support arena, Hill Robinson and Moravia Yachting offer an exciting launch pad to reach out to our clients in new and refreshing ways. We want to focus on how we can really make a difference and how we can support our clients, especially in these changing and challenging times.”
Elite opportunities Hill Robinson has built a successful business from the simple premise of listening carefully to what their customers want. As the crew service and quality developed to the highest levels on customers' yachts, it became obvious that this exemplary service level was not always duplicated at clients' homes and residences. With HRCrew already a major player in the superyacht market it was a natural development to roll-out this service for land based operations from luxury villas to family estates and private islands. The Panorama training and function facility again proved its worth in 2019 hosting various events through the year for captains and crew, industry professionals and customers during the industry and social events in Monaco. While at our Quai Antoine 1er offices, the staff complement seems to almost have doubled in the last year.
Hill Robinson has created a new division, HREliteRecruit to deliver an innovative tailored service to support clients and stakeholders requiring a perfect operational process for their unique properties around the world. Understanding how vital employee selection underscores the staffing success, HREliteRecruit and their multilingual team of specialists, delivers highly professional project scoping through to the staff selection process and implementation.
HRElite Recruit is already providing a wide range of services with many key contracts in full operation and is highly confident to be able support many more clients with this important quality-driven approach. A fresh focus on Chartering USA As the Hill Robinson footprint expands to new areas worldwide, the process of joining up the 'dots' to bring the offices together to support customers around the globe is pushing ahead in 2020. A natural development for the USA office is to supercharge the charter activities using the systems already in place for the Caribbean and the Bahamas charter market. Kaisa Pace, Hill Robinson’s newest charter manager says, ”I have watched as Hill Robinson has established its USA presence and become a powerful player in the superyacht market in this region. Our paths crossed when I joined them in January 2020 to head up charter activities in the USA. This is a dream job that will enable me to fully utilise over 20 years of hands-on experience in charter, working with clients destined for cruising the Bahamas and down-island to the Caribbean. My task is to build a team with some young talent and create a vibrant expansion in the big yacht charter market from our fast growing Florida office”. Kaisa brings with her some exceptional 'local' charter experience that will add another level of support to the Hill Robinson charter fleet. “Before becoming a charter manager in 2004, which utilised both my charter and retail sales experience, I was fortunate to have spent time sailing for two years on the family boat, cruising through Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This substantially broadened my interest and outlook.
Regulation (EU) 2018/886 As we expected there were some USA built yacht owners who skipped their Mediterranean cruise last year in view of the regulation, however those that sail under the Marshall Islands and Cayman Islands Yacht Engaged in Trade (YET) programs enjoyed a pretty trouble-free time, also into Italian waters which was, until tested, an unknown quantity. Yachts built in the USA that are registered under the Yacht Engaged in Trade programs (dual use) and are operated under TA for Commercial Activity (TACA YET) are exempt from this regulation.

2010 Avenue B, West Palm Beach, FL 33404 USA
With this first-hand knowledge and experience 'in the bank’ I earned an athletic scholarship to Michigan State University and after graduation, the warm Florida weather soon beckoned me back to Fort Lauderdale to build a career. I became a licenced Captain and sailing instructor and then managed a bareboat charter fleet in the Abacos. I came shoreside to work with some of the top charter managers and companies. Then came the important move to Hill Robinson where my charter experience and detailed knowledge of the cruising areas of the Caribbean and especially the Bahamas will be very beneficial.
On a personal note, my family has had homes in the Bahamas from the 1940s, so this area has a special place in my heart. Following the severe damage to the Abacos by hurricane Dorian, I have been actively involved as Chairperson of Hope for Hopetown, supporting the out islands of Abaco with vital supplies, school materials, veterinary care, and removal of plastic waste in coordination with 4Ocean”.
KAISA PACE CHARTER MANAGER
As well as YET, there is still the possibility for yachts to charter under the temporary admission regime or the returned goods regime allowing exemption of the 25% tariff that the regulation applies, which is still effective in 2020. Certain regulations obviously apply, centred around non-EU ownership or flag, but under this regime, any yacht including USA built can be imported into the EU without payment of duty. So if the Mediterranean beckons, it is certainly still worth looking into.

AND A TRULY COLOURFUL TOWN WHEN IT COMES TO VOILES D’ANTIBES TIME.
Managing crew should be about the people, not the paperwork. That’s why we created HRclick. Our goal is to stop the endless grind of spreadsheets and make time for the work you were meant to do. This intuitive app requires minimal set up or training and enables yacht’s officers and crew to enter and monitor the log, simply and quickly from any device, covered by recognised digital signatures. For example, the entire crew rest status can be monitored from a single page. If a non-compliance occurs, the crew member is required to add a comment. Officers and crew are notified of the noncompliance immediately. Once crew members have signed off their hours, it is a simple matter for the officer to review all comments and countersign each record. All records are stored securely in our enterprise level content management system. We take extra precautions to keep your data safe while making it easier for you to stay compliant. The app has been built to comply with MLC 2006 and all IMO Guidelines and is constantly reviewed and updated to remain so.

Normal office working was briefly interrupted in Antibes and Monaco last year in the shape of the Owen video camera team in action. The objective was to capture both video and sound of the general activities and the various team players in different departments, including some nine language variations for 'at Hill Robinson, we love the sea!'. The video shoot, some 160 minutes of 4K high resolution shot in total, is the basic raw material that is used for the complex post production editing. A visual story of activities and office locations to illustrate all the various facets of the Hill Robinson client offering. In all a lot of information compressed into a finished product destined to be a series of educational sales support tools. A short and basic edit of the video material available at the time was shown to an enthusiastic audience at the opening of the December Hill Robinson staff seminar. Just a taster of something more dynamic and colourful to come, with sunny lifestyle images and office locations to be added in.

A CLEAN WATER SUPPLY THANKS TO MARIANNE’S EFFORTS
You’ve been part of the Hill Robinson team for a number of years, any milestone moments? Where do you originate, and how did you first get into (or end up) working with yachts in the South of France?
It’s been amazing but for me it’s mostly about the people. I’ve met some great people and even though I’m not a yachtie I now have some wonderful friends from Basically, I’m a city girl but I came to the South of France over 20 years ago due to the crew I have worked with. I can’t not single out the amazing crew of the personal circumstances and I “fell” into fabulous S.Y. Felicita West – yachting when I joined Hill Robinson in from our time in the 2002 (they were just one year old and had Caribbean right back at the 6 employees then). My background is beginning, through the varied, but always in the retail sector – Perini Cup in Sardinia to a from selling to buying to admin to crew member’s wedding in systems manager and then onto fashion a beautiful Italian hill top design work and business consultancy! It village. It’s really special to was a world of high standards and top customer service, but needing processes have become part of the as streamlined and efficient as possible to on-board team in that way. ensure financial viability in a tough Since you started in the market. Yacht management was a new industry, yachts have profession back in 2002 – everyone was grown and their needs learning. Most in the industry have a have grown. How have passion for yachting; I have a passion for things changed from your developing the best people and Operations perspective? providing the best service to our clients.
It’s funny to look back now at how fast the yacht world has evolved. Hill Robinson was one of the first companies offering comprehensive yacht management and was at the forefront of ISM, holding I’m not sure there is such a thing as a “normal day” and that is part of the joy of one of the first Documents of Compliance issued. the job! I’ve been with Hill Robinson almost 18 years and the world of yachting Everything was in paper form – we had files with has changed dramatically during that photocopies of all yacht and time and I’ve learnt a lot. From MLC to French Commercial Exemption, it’s a mine crew certificates! We didn’t even scan then. Now it’s all field now! My brain is constantly picked electronic. There was no by the team, crew and clients alike! There VSAT or 4g – are no two days the same! communications on transit was Sat phone only. Not all crew had STCWs and many didn’t bother about contracts (although all crew on Hill Robinson managed yachts have always had contracts), but now they won’t join a yacht until they’ve seen the small print! There were stories of crew not paid for months, abandoned in far off places and so on but now in all honesty most crew are extremely well employed (most through a regulated employment company) and protected. The world of EVER PRESENT, REPRESENTING 2020 is a very long way from that of 2002. HILL ROBINSON AT EVENTS DURING MAJOR SHOWS AROUND THE WORLD As Operations Manager based in the Antibes office, I know when we met, you were rushing from one telephone call to another, in between a planning meeting, but what constitutes a normal day in the office, is there one?
13
On a more personal note, you established the fundraising charity Water of Hope, to help Cambodians get clean water. Are you still involved with that? Have things improved? I’ve been involved with Water of Hope, a well project in Cambodia, for a number of years now and I have to confess that my work commitments have got somewhat in the way of my fundraising efforts recently. However, the need remains as far too many just don’t have access to clean water. Not only is this a very dangerous health issue with the current COVID-19 situation, but it’s also a real dilemma in today’s environment as they are forced to buy bottled water (if they can afford it) with all those single use plastic bottles! There is recycling and, somewhat sadly, sifting through the rubbish pulling out these bottles to sell to the recyclers is how many very poor families live.
THE BEAUTIFUL PERINI NAVI, FELICITA WEST, NOW SAILING AS SPIRIT OF THE C’S
I’ve not been without my tough times, but I’m a huge believer that we have a responsibility to make the world a better place and we have to give back. This is my real passion and I strive daily to achieve that, in every aspect of my life from working to the highest standard so our clients enjoy their yachts to making life just a little better for the poor of Cambodia. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said “ To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to leave the world a better place, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived, this is to have succeeded”. I’d like to think that as a Yacht/Operations Manager and as a human being, I have succeeded.

PECIAL
Powering up for the roaring 2020s Since the last issue of HarbouR news we’ve been looking at the continuing growth of the Isle of Man operation and how all team members work with the Hill Robinson global enterprise to raise the bar across all client services. Partner, Karl Hartmann talks us through some of the new developments. “As the whole Hill Robinson enterprise grows in all locations and broadens the mix of client offerings, our management has evolved, refining and restructuring all departments by recruiting more talented specialists from outside as well as through internal promotion. With larger refits and new-builds, plus managing big-ticket procurement items such as helicopters, amphibious aircraft and jets, we have necessarily added another important layer to our team of specialists. This global growth required a bigger resource in our financial and legal team here in the Isle of Man office. We have introduced an additional four specialists to work in close coordination with Peter van Toor, within his growing procurement department and with Head of Aviation, Robert Zimmermann and senior project manager, Kevin Laverty.
BACK TO THE EIGHTIES, ie 1780s PEGGY: THE WORLD’S OLDEST SURVIVING SCHOONER The Isle of Man is also home to the World’s oldest surviving schooner, Peggy. Or as the National Historic Fleet know her, No.1125.
Second Floor, 14 Athol Street, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 1JA British Isles +44 1624 622 523
Peggy is unique – a rare surviving example of a small well built wooden vessel from an era when plans were seldom, if ever, drawn of such vessels. This makes her existence even more valuable in a maritime technology context. She was built in 1789 in the form of a small working boat with six oar holes and was schooner rigged with a bowsprit for George Quayle of Castletown, who during the wars with France from 1793 was an officer in successive Manx forces raised for Island defence.
I think it important to emphasise how Hill Robinson is integrating the various teams across the world so constantly refining the group structure, responsibility, disciplines and products. Our office here is literally a skill and support resource for all our customer teams worldwide. That way, the client benefit is where all our offices are working together as one networked team, allowing reporting back to clients in one consolidated manner. As an example, HRaviation reaches out to all our client base, smoothing-out jet and helicopter charter, providing maintenance schedules and managing and supplying pilots. Procurement supporting them in specifying and providing custom built aircraft”. The size and complexity of new build and refit projects grow at speed, so there was a need to build and refine the project management structure and develop a bestin-class operation manual for all project managers. Karl explains “We made the decision to invest a lot of time and effort to create almost the 'Hill Robinson Bible for Project Management'. We believe this is our preferred protocol in the project management sector”.
UNDER COVID-19 RULES, THE WHOLE TEAM HAVE BEEN KEEPING PROJECTS MOVING AND PRODUCING DELIVERIES TO CLIENTS FROM THEIR HOME OFFICES. BRETT, KEVIN AND CALLUM TAKING TIME OUT FOR A PICTURE.

New Construction and Refit Project Management Naval architects, engineers and surveyors, interior experts, procurement team, legal and accounting support, all working together taking care of issues such as liaising with class and flag, sourcing spares, procurement and arranging surveys, to ensure the timely and cost effective completion of your build or refit project, to commissioning and sea trials.
There is evidence that at one stage Peggy was armed with eight cannon - six 1 foot long, mounted three a side and two slightly longer as stern chasers. Kept in a boathouse next to his property, further archaeological excavations later also revealed a hidden dock for Peggy, under his main house, a cellar entrance through which Peggy used to pass from the harbour, possibly carrying French brandy. Peggy was discovered in 1935 in this walled up cellar in Bridge House, Castletown where she had lain for more than 150 years. In 1941, when the house was sold, Peggy was presented to the Manx Museum together with the boathouse. It is likely that Peggy was one of the first vessels to be fitted with ‘sliding keels’, the forerunners of the centreboard. Three were fitted through her keel. The now common centreboards used in most small and medium sailboats are testament to the original idea and its linkage to Peggy. pic ©Manx National Heritage

Australia introduces bill for superyacht chartering The Government of Australia has passed the Special Recreational Vessel Bill, allowing foreign charter superyachts to enter Australia under a temporary Coastal Trading Licence, opening up Australian waters with all its charms to the world’s superyacht charter fleet. Previously, Australian law did not allow foreignowned superyachts to operate commercially unless the vessel was fully imported. This historically has deterred foreign owned yachts from entering Australian waters, however, under the new Bill, vessels will be protected from importation and be required to pay 10 per cent Goods and Services Tax on the value of the charter. This legislation comes into effect almost immediately, whilst work to amend the Coastal Trading Act to cater for superyachts in the long term continues to be progressed.

FIONA ARNOTT RECRUITMENT left
“We have been working tirelessly for many years to achieve this for the industry. The ability to charter in Australia now supplements charter in New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Papua New Guinea where superyacht charter is already permitted and reinforces the South Pacific as a destination of choice for superyachts,” comments David Good, CEO of Superyacht Australia. “The Great Barrier Reef, The Kimberley’s and Ningaloo Reef, the wilderness of Tasmania and the hustle of Sydney Harbour are all best enjoyed from the water. Superyacht chartering is really one of the best ways to experience what Australia has to offer”. Changes to the Act had been proposed a few times in recent years and finally supporters were able to convince the Australian Government that with a number of high-profile sporting events taking part in the Pacific region, including the America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021, the passing of the regulation will unlock an estimated 11,800 jobs and $1.64 billion to the economy. Australia would be in a position to take advantage of around 160 superyachts that are expected to visit the region during this period, for as well as the charter spend, the legislation could well benefit local traders and small businesses engaged in maintenance, servicing and repairing of any vessels. Potentially, industry activity could more than double overnight, with many more yachts now visiting for charter rather than privately owned cruising. As well as boasting one of the ‘seven wonders of the world’, The Great Barrier Reef, and its unique natural beauty, more than 25% of the world’s Captains and crew members originate from Australia. So while it is looking to become a destination of choice for many, it will also be a homecoming treat for many others.
LISA, STILL HARD AT IT UNDER COVID-19 RULES,
Legislation is opening up Australian waters, so If you are on a search for adventure or stunning sights, then bringing your yacht or chartering a super yacht in Australia is definitely for you. From the iconic sights in Sydney Harbour, the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef or the turquoise and white landscapes created by the Whitsunday beaches, anywhere you go you will be treated by unforgettable sights.
One of the most popular yachting destinations in the Southern Hemisphere, The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of 74 islands off the central coast of Queensland, part of the Great Barrier Reef National Park and around 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Brisbane, although the closest of them, Long Island is only 1 kilometre from the mainland of Australia. Discovered by Captain Cook, naming it Whitsunday’s Passage, believing it to be Whit Sunday, 7 weeks after Easter. However as the International Date Line had not yet been established, the day of discovery was actually Whit Monday. For a cruise or charter the Whitsundays have just about everything, bright blue skies, blue water and soft breezes. You can take a tender to the world-famous Whitehaven Beach, discover Aboriginal art in Nara Inlet, shop on vibrant Hamilton Island or enjoy the solitude of Butterfly Bay. The Whitsunday Islands will not disappoint. Andy Smith

Established in our office on the ‘Paseo Maritimo’, Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, 37B, Palma for a year now, we’re here to offer support to our expanding fleet when they’re in town, or from here we help to provide a specialised management service to any new and existing clients. “We take our time to get to know each and every client,” says Sarah Kemp, running office coordination, “so that we can give the best bespoke service possible for that individual client, and being located here makes this a much simpler task”. A key addition to our office is the HRcrew department, looked after by Rosa. They are here to help clients select and recruit the best possible candidates. Interviews without appointment are available from Monday – Friday from 9.30am to 12 noon.
All about Tax Seminar, sponsored by LGS Asesores and Astilleros de Mallorca, November 2019
Avinguda de Gabriel Roca, 37B Palma de Mallorca, Spain +34 971 675 888
The topic was ‘All you need to know about Spanish Tax’, a very popular topic within the yachting industry, often spoken about, but not always understood. One of our principal aims has always been to look after our captains and crew, not just professionally but personally too, so the purpose of this event was to inform them, along with any external captains and crew, on how to be a ‘legitimate’ part of the Spanish system, the right way, the wrong way and any pitfalls. Following an introduction by Rosa and an overview on Hill Robinson and HRcrew, Luis from LGS Asesores was invited to collaborate with us to present a seminar to our fleet and external clients. Attendees were given tips and advice on how to know if they were a ‘fiscal’ resident or not, and some options on how they have to declare and fill out tax returns, be that as a resident or non-resident

As John says, “The experience of going to sea under sail can be a real eye opener and a way to learn. Not necessarily how to be a sailor but how to work together in a small space. How to accept the responsibility for each task, however simple that task may seem, it is still an important part of the overall picture of the management of a vessel at sea”.

LOCKDOWN DIARIES LIMASSOL Stelios Kazamia, our Director in Cyprus, adds his post from the Limassol office just as restrictions are being lifted and the office is in operation again: “In Cyprus the lockdown started on March 13, but for Despina and I, having flown in from London on the 8th, we had to go straight into fourteen day self isolation period!, certainly a wake-up call for us all. During our confinement period we still had a considerable workload. We also had some of the Hill Robinson fleet anchored in Limassol....now departed... the problem here was that disembarking or embarkation was not permitted... so rather hands-off for once! Like a lot of people during the confinement period my wife was also working from home so between this, becoming a teacher to our 7 year old plus our very active 3 year old on top, we have been kept very busy. When the children are safely in bed it should be relaxation time but instead it’s an opportunity to catch up on some work!” Despina Costa, Limassol’s Charter accountant adds: “It is an interesting observation that with all the ailments and health issues we are used to in our world today, we now have a common threat with the Covid-19 virus. We can all take on board what we need to do to protect ourselves but a real concern is the welfare of our remote families and also sincerely worry about all those brave people in healthcare who have to work in close proximity to the sick. This is a time to stay positive, support every one, work colleagues and family, reflect on good memories and plan to create some new ones soon”.

Valerie Scheibling one of our administrative assistants, like others in Hill Robinson, has been juggling home working with two children and as a single mum: “Creating the Hill Robinson WellBeing website with Katrina and Annika has been a great experience. It has proven to be a well-used information and helpline platform for all HR staff in these difficult times. It has been so successful it will be used as the basis for a HR team information tool after we return to the 'new-normal, further strengthening our dedicated global team approach to our customers”.
SOME OFFICE OUTLOOKS HAVE CHANGED, THIS IS INGRID’S
Lisa Christensen, Charter Retail, has been working with her team doing plenty of new business while on lockdown. Lisa comments “We have secured two large yachts, along with support vessels, for long charters in the Middle East, terrific news for Moravia Yachting and the whole Hill Robinson team, with more in the pipeline as well”.

Senior project manager, Kevin Laverty reports from his home near Newcastle on Tyne, “Although I am part of the IoM team, I’m often working remotely at shipyards so I have a dedicated home office anyway... a fancy name for my man-cave! Currently my main project is in Holland which is still able to progress well even with all the restrictions”. Callum Carine of Client Services sums up his lockdown experiences, “On the plus side there is the novelty of wearing shorts to work and some quiet thinking time. On the downside, probably like many, I feel it’s unlimited access to the fridge!”

Starting with a comment from Jojanneke Struik Hartmann: “The Isle of Man is operating at full speed ahead through the crisis, remotely of course! Working from home feels a bit like deja vu for me after a four year period of home working a while back. We all have projects running from refits to all the aviation logistics, procurement and the many client support services we run. The Isle of Man is proving to be very self sufficient through the lockdown, with schools producing 3D printed surgical masks and having our own oxygen ventilators, plus a substantial testing capacity”.

“Zooming through confinement”. Valentina D'Ischia, PA to Niall Robinson, opens our short diary round-up for Monaco: “One thing that has happened to me is that I have accidentally become the Zoom expert. A perfect solution at precisely the right moment in history! Refining how we best use and utilise this communication tool during lockdown will definitely roll-over into a very useful everyday tool for everyone here after we resume some degree of normality”.
With the largest number of staff in the group, the Antibes office has naturally posted the most stories about juggling work and looking after children, being teachers, transporting their office hardware to home and making an office, sometimes having to barter with partners for space when both are working from home together. Yacht Accountant Eve Tary is one. “I managed to nab the proper desk at home so my husband needed to employ his woodwork skills with old champagne boxes (of course!) and some spare chairs.. .he got the room without a window! Although it has been fun as well”.
Mihaela Megret from the operations department comments: “Now we have got used to the disruption of working from home, we have got into a new rhythm, I really miss the office buzz and working as a team sharing snippets of information. With this confinement you start to be a lot more observant, the sky is clear and blue, you can hear the birds and I sincerely believe that this experience will make everyone kinder and more considerate to one another”. On a lighter note, we had this post from Niall Robinson “Lockdown for my small family at our French home in Mouans-Sartoux has seen some creative thinking. We are lucky to have great neighbours and organised a communal, but socially spaced BBQ and seating area either side of our hedge. We decided to run a sweepstake for the final end-date for the lockdown and added coins to a communal pot. This enabled us all to become Hedge Fund Managers, in my case, one sporting my new homegrown 'guinea pig' haircut... it might catch on!”
Finally a word from Peter van Toor from the procurement team. “The pandemic has made the normal job of shipping express spares Heading up New Business more difficult, but even Development, Ingrid Gantard reports: with grounded fleets of “First I have to mention our Well-being aircraft and routes shut website for its nutrition advice... banana we are meeting that bread muffins to be precise! The challenge with creative lockdown period has actually helped solutions”. Peter finishes new-business prospecting, again using with a poignant video calls, because contacts, such as message: “I would like to family offices, are locked down as well thank the Hill Robinson and easier to reach! During this period we partners for looking after our health and have been able to secure several key wellbeing so well. We are all very lucky to opportunities to present proposals such work for a great as project management for a 90m newcompany that build, two new yacht management cares for their targets and alongside, developing other employees in product areas such as crew training. such a Parallel to these tasks we have considerate successfully built and launched a new way”. Since opening our office in Jeddah we have seen a steady rise in interest in the Red Sea cruising area and why not? The area allows yacht owners and their guests the opportunity to witness some of the most untouched coral reefs on the planet and an outstanding selection of marine life. There is plenty to discover in the sea and without doubt the most popular option is to scuba dive from your yacht into the Red Sea’s hidden depths, but you will also find plenty of amazing sights by snorkelling in the shallower reefs, or even explore in a transparent kayak on the surface itself. And when you need a break from the water there are always excursions available for adventures inland to visit some of the Kingdom’s wilderness and cultural historic sites amongst spectacular scenery. Throughout the year, the water temperature of the Red Sea rarely drops below 19°C, even in December and January and rises to 29°C average in the summer months, making the shallows as warm as bath water. These warm waters combined with over 1200 species of fish make the Red Sea a major attraction for recreational divers. The thriving marine biodiversity is largely due to the sea’s coral reef ecosystem, which stretches along well over a 1500 km of coastline, some reefs being up to 7,000 years old in parts.
In a few years’ time, The Red Sea Project, an initiative by the Saudi Arabian government, will be opening up new levels of luxury tourism. This development of more than 200km of untouched coastline and an archipelago of more than 90 unspoiled islands will embrace nature, culture and adventure, setting new standards in sustainable development and positioning Saudi Arabia on the global tourism map. Preservation of these habitats is central to the project's development, as 75% of the islands will be left untouched with nine designated as special conservation zones. The destination is rich in culture and tradition. Few have such diversity and multitude of natural treasures located close to each other. Visitors will have a wealth of opportunities to explore the history of the region and experience firsthand the fabled hospitality and fascinating culture of Saudi Arabia and its ancient archaeological sites. The island of Ummahat Al Shaykh will host a hyper-luxury and a luxury island hotel. The planning of which has been carefully coordinated to avoid, but give ready access to, all areas of coral. A special emphasis on environmental sustainability will ensure that the natural beauty of the destination will engage and excite visitors for generations to come. With its own dedicated airport, the Red Sea Project will be easily accessible to visitors from around the world. We have several yachts available for charter in the Red Sea, please contact us for details: charter@hillrobinson.com Andy Smith

Why is it called the Red Sea? Several theories surround the origin. A popular suggestion credits the seasonal blooms of a type of algae, which make the normally crystal-clear water appear a deep orangered. Another source sites the nearby red-tinged mountain range called Harei Edom.

After leaving the Service, Andy completed his MBA at Imperial College, London.
His thesis was a ‘Strategic Assessment of the Luxury Yacht Management Business’, which is when he was introduced to a young company called Hill Robinson! A 9-year sales role at Barclays Investment Bank followed, where still enthused by the superyacht market, Andy identified the corporate jet and superyacht lending book as an untapped sector, and quickly executed trades with owners.
In the latter years Andy provided subject matter expertise on banking disputes and litigation, which often required mediation to settle. Andy leads the Sales team and is based in London. ANDY HOLMES HEAD OF SALES

IN ITALY
The birthplace of modern design, Italy has crafted more masterpieces than any other country on earth. While globally synonymous with cars, architecture, furniture and fashion, we are watching it translate through to the yacht industry.
www.hillrobinson.com | www.hrcrew.com
A year or two ago, we were asked by one of our owners to find a shipyard to build their project, a 76m motor yacht, from a preliminary design provided by Clifford Denn. In conjunction with the Hill Robinson new build team and the naval architect, the design was further defined in order for prospective shipyards to fully understand the requirement and obtain a clear profile, exterior styling and general arrangement with sufficient information for a bid package.

ANDIAMO 48M BAGLIETTO The Baglietto history goes way back to the early 20th century, creating the first motor boats – then known locally as canotti automobile. The shipyard was also behind one of the largest motor yachts of the time: the “Giuseppina” at 22.6 meters in 1906. Much of the next 50 years was then spent producing vessels for the Navy, their fast patrol and other boats subsequently contributed to the building of the brand’s name and reputation. By 1970, Baglietto had moved into aluminium building, launching the 147 foot, 44.8m, Al Fahedi, generally considered to be its first superyacht.
ASPIRE 51M BENETTI
In 2012, Baglietto was acquired by the Gavio Group. With expansion into new state-of-the-art facilities capacity grew into its now 35,000 square metre facility in La Spezia and with it the ability to house 120m vessels in a covered basin. Today, Baglietto Yachts in La Spezia produces yachts mostly between 45 to 60m, up to approximately 75 metres and are renowned for their seamless blend of artisanal craftsmanship and technological excellence, sleek and modern exterior design and unmistakable Italian style. "But it’s not just luxury that owners demand today, as they aspire to make as little impact on the environment as possible. An ecologically friendly approach is one of Baglietto’s top priorities. We’re very focussed on harnessing new and sustainable technologies, and that includes a drive towards eco-friendly propulsion systems and recyclable materials,” says Michele Gavino, Baglietto’s CEO. Hill Robinson has been involved with the stylish Andiamo, a 48m T-Line Baglietto design and the 53m Burkut from this yard.

Our objective was to find the right shipyard with adequate facilities, structure, experience and a team in place with a willingness to cooperate and work together with the client’s strict requirements to bring this project to a successful conclusion. Our new build team set out and researched yards in Germany and the Netherlands in Northern Europe to Turkey in Southern Europe, but interestingly the area around Liguria provided a few names all eminently capable of completing the project, comfortably within projected timescales and most cost effectively. Perhaps no real surprise, as at 30 metres and above, Italy has more than onethird of the entire new yacht market with more than 170 yachts under construction, nearly three times as many as their closest competitor. While you could argue that there is a definite Italian style, Italy does give potential owners more choice than any other yacht-building nation.

Codecasa
Fincantieri
Codecasa Shipyard, established in Viareggio in 1825 by the shipwright Giovanni Battista Codecasa, is known all over the world as a builder of steel and light alloy motoryachts, ranging from 30 to 75 metres LOA. Still run by the founder’s heirs, the Group offers a range of yachts promoting quality, technology, innovation, reliability, design and comfort. More recently a new range of fast yachts totally built in aluminium alloy, ranging from 35 to 50 metres LOA, was added to the traditional displacement yachts in steel and aluminium alloy. Hill Robinson has had a recent involvement in the refit of the 65m Eternity at the Rybovich facility in Palm Beach.

OCEAN VICTORY FINCANTIERI
For 2020, Codecasa has made an unexpected innovative jump, aiming to set a new trend in the industry. The JET 2020 is, as Codecasa says, "where the sea and sky meet on the horizon. At 70 metres, a yacht with stylistic features borrowed from aviation. The lines are clean and minimal, the exterior and interior spaces are huge".
JET 2020 CODECASA
ETERNITY CODECASA 65M
After 40 years at the helm of the company, Fulvio Codecasa recognises himself as the most demanding of clients and the most difficult to please. He is supported in the management team by his daughters and their husbands and still closely follows all the construction stages of his yachts. This direct relationship between the customer and the family ensures complete satisfaction is the ethos of the yard, borne out by the great care that is devoted to every single detail of the project.
"First, there was MY Serene; then came MY Ocean Victory. These two full-custom mega yachts are among the 15 largest yachts ever built anywhere in the world", said Mauro Parodi, Vice President Sales, Fincantieri Yachts.
This is essentially the reason to be for Fincantieri, building the largest hulls beyond the reach of most other yards. Fincantieri Yachts has a particular specialism in high-quality superyachts over 70 metres long, and beyond that there is no limit to the size or volume of yachts that can be built. The cornerstone of its ability to produce high-quality superyachts is its background in ship design and construction. Fincantieri is able to transfer its advanced technologies to yachting and add the extraordinary elements that characterise a superyacht. Two dedicated yards, one located at La Spezia and the other Trieste, supplemented by the resources within the company, provide services which together make a pretty comprehensive team for a vessel’s design and construction. Fincantieri is attentive to the needs of its clients, and flexible. Collaborating with the most notable yacht designers, they have created wholly custom yachts with the ability to build in unique features, such as a submarine hangar. The shipyard has built some of the most advanced ships, delivering the 67m Destriero, which still holds the ‘blue riband’ with a 65 knots peak speed and the transatlantic crossing at an average of 53 knots.

Sanlorenzo Sanlorenzo will see a brand new Ameglia headquarters facility in 2020 designed by Lissoni Casal Ribeiro and has sites in Viareggio and La Spezia, focusing on the design and production of yachts up to 70 metres. Originally established in 1958 as Cantieri Navali San Lorenzo Spa, Massimo Perotti, former General Director of AzimutBenetti, acquired the majority stake and renamed the company Sanlorenzo. Part of its output was moved to Viareggio in 2007, where a new division for the production of larger superyachts was established that year.
Amico & Co
In 2016, Sanlorenzo established a new division Sanlorenzo Superyacht, moving the production of the shipyard’s entire metal superyacht line, hulls from 38 to 64 metres, from Viareggio to a new production site in La Spezia. Perotti takes a resolute view on their yachts, "A Sanlorenzo boat is tailored to the owner's needs to produce something unique, much like a bespoke suit".
However unique the yachts are, their new High-end Services division is even more so. Reflecting its ethos of excellence, it has created a package of services solely for Sanlorenzo clients. Offering a peace-of-mind proposal of: tailor made leasing/finance packages, a Sanlorenzo charter fleet, crew training at the Sanlorenzo Academy and Sanlorenzo Timeless, a maintenance/refitting package – offering lifetime care. For the crew requirement, Sanlorenzo chose Hill Robinson to provide and train crew and specifically run an intensive programme on their new Sanlorenzo yacht. According to Sanlorenzo, “Hill Robinson will provide a higher level of training for all crew joining their new yacht and will ensure they are fully familiar with their particular vessel. After all, to a new owner, the quality of the crew is just as important as the quality of the yacht”. Meanwhile, the yacht division has recently launched their largest fibreglass yacht, Kia Ora at 38m, the 20th hull of the semi displacement SD126 range.
35
A world leader in its field, Amico & Co operates exclusively in the large yacht refit and repair sector, with a 90% international client base and more than120 projects every year, from 30 to 140m LOA. The shipyard recently inaugurated a new 4000T ShipLift, an innovative system for hauling, launching and manoeuvring megayachts up to 95m LOA. The submersible platform is housed inside a dedicated structure that elevates vessels to shipyard ground level with a series of synchronised hoists, allowing the shipyard to consolidate its international leadership. Situated in the Port of Genoa stretching over 60,000 m2, Amico & Co can receive large yachts without length restrictions and can dry-dock, in covered sheds, vessels of up to 100m. The shipyard is known for its in-house departments, high quality standards and the speed with which it can perform, factors that have generated a consistent growth in the company’s reputation and a growing percentage of return business.

Benetti SEASENSE BENETTI
One of Europe’s oldest pleasure yacht builders, Benetti was founded in 1873 and has delivered almost 350 yachts to date. Although possibly the most celebrated, and not just on film, was the 1980 85m Nabila, the largest superyacht in the world at the time, otherwise known as the Disco Volante in the Bond film, Never Say Never Again. A member of the Azimut group, Benetti is a world leader in terms of its order book volume of megayachts at any given time. Well set up with good facilities throughout its six yards, covering 300,000 square metres, the largest yacht delivered to date is the 90m Lionheart launched in 2016, while it has also recently sold two yachts over 100m.
NABILA LAUNCH 1979
Benetti works as part of this larger corporation, building semi-custom and custom luxury yachts and superyachts constructed in aluminium, steel and FRP, recently launching the first fibreglass flagship, a 44m Diamond 145 to be named Ink. They have their own in-house design and engineering offices building under LRS, MCA and Rina regulations and consistently deliver successful yachts for a good price/quality ratio in comparison to other yards. “Precision and attention to detail are key words in Benetti, a unique ability to listen, to interpret and to fully satisfy owners’ wishes,” says Enrico Barsanti, Head of Operations, Custom. “we meticulously follow and give support to the production process from executive engineering, planning and production, up to sea trials, test and final delivery”.
Hill Robinson has, as project manager, achieved good results with a significant amount of new builds at the Benetti yard including the FB 240 motoryachts Wind, Meamina, Lady Lara and I Dynasty.

The Rossi shipyard was born in 1980, building river and coastal passenger vessel hulls in steel and aluminium for major shipyards. With a determination to shed the subcontractor role and compete with the major shipyards, as Rossinavi, they delivered the 54m motoryacht South. Credibility gained, an important order followed for the construction of a 70 metre launched in 2011 as Numptia, today known as High Power III, placing Rossinavi amongst the more important shipyards in the world.
UTOPIA 63M ROSSINAVI Their two facilities in Viareggio and Pisa have since produced some exceptional yachts, and fast; the 63m Utopia IV clocked at 33 knots and the 49m Flying Dagger at 31. Resolutely Italian, they offer beautiful concepts, by Pininfarina and the Infinity project designed by Fulvio de Simoni, to a prospective owner demanding the utmost in style. Still a family owned and run business, their theory of construction is as they say, “based on three simple words, a very elementary concept, and one that is always looked for but often found wanting: do it well!"
FLYING DAGGER 49M ROSSINAVI
Benetti has developed a diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system that reduces fuel consumption, emissions, noise and vibration, that can cruise around 8 knots using electric power. It has also created BEST – Benetti Exclusive Sea Technology – which integrates all on-board electronics and systems. Similarly, Benetti’s integrated bridge system reduces the number of navigation panels using intuitive graphic interfaces and touch-screen technology, successfully housing navigation, telecommunication, safety and data transmission in the same system.

Ferretti Inspired by machinery wrapping paper, Perini invented a system of remotely controlled winches powered by electric motors, allowing Perini Navi to be the first company to produce large vessels with such automised equipment. To such an extent that the first boat launched in 1983, Felicità, a 40 metre sailing yacht could be manned by just one person. Over sixty distinctively styled sailing superyachts have left Viareggio, varying from 40 to 88 metres, their biggest released in 2006, is the Maltese Falcon: a ship with three masts and a revolutionary furling rig.
With a shipyard in La Spezia, although with their headquarters in Forli, Ferretti Nautica was established in 1968 marketing the American built Chris Craft motor boats. Three years later however the company built its first own 10-metre wooden motor sailer and a further ten years on its first motor yacht. Following institutional investment in the1990s, the company pursued an expansion strategy through targeted acquisitions of builders specialising in quality motor yachts. Initially with Custom Line, Ferretti introduced 28- to 40-metre fibreglass yachts. Then in 1999 with CRN Spa, incorporated larger yachts with steel hulls and aluminium superstructures. In 2000, Riva, one of the world’s most famous and exclusive shipyards was added to the portfolio. Today, production efficiency coupled with great quality, a team of artisans, backed by the group’s own design, manufacturing and engineering departments ensure that each yacht is worthy of the Ferretti name. Their facilities located in Forlì, Cattolica, Ancona, Mondolfo, Sarnico and La Spezia bristle with high-tech equipment and follow the latest production techniques. The nautical hub at Ancona is a multibrand centre, home to the entire CRN fleet and some of the Custom Line models as well as the Riva Superyachts Division. A striking example of one of their most successful models, the grp Custom Line Navetta 42, Sonic was recently sold by Moravia.
The latest Custom Line from the Ancona yard, this time with a Zuccon Design interior, Sangha was recently delivered to her owner.

Although following their acquisition some time ago, motor yachts previously built under the Picchiotti name now sail under the same Perini Navi logo as their sister sailing yachts. The shipyard was founded in 1983 by Lucca-based entrepreneur Fabio Perini, entering the nautical world with an inventive approach: a sailing yacht with ample living space that could be sailed with a reduced crew.

Bespoke Crew Training
Hill Robinson adds a fresh approach, supporting clients by helping crew to achieve the exceptional Hill Robinson has a business strategy that is designed to offer their clients many pillars of support to help achieve the goal of delivering exceptional 'stress free yachting'. The natural development in crew operations was crew training, drawing on an in-depth knowledge of what their clients demand of crew and through extensive immersion in yacht management, crew training was carefully developed to a point where a highly-detailed programme is now firmly in place. A catalyst for this important new service came from a strategic partnership with Sanlorenzo, one of the most prolific builders of superyachts today. With up to five new build yachts being delivered to clients each year, it was an important requirement to provide a fully operational and trained crew, so the Sanlorenzo client could literally 'take the keys and sail away'.

The ten crew training modules in the HRcrew Training package are designed to cover all the key areas to operate a new yacht. Rather than just operations, the modules cover the need for team building and health and wellbeing. Being away from home and working long hours can be hard for some crew. Statistics shows that 1 in 4 people will suffer from mental health problems at some point in their life. This course will give an insight to the problematics as regards to mental health. How to detect it and what you can do to help. Other modules cover safety, interior and chef training. From operational aspects, there are modules for IT and cyber security. Yachts are more connected nowadays than ever before and therefore cyber security awareness has never been more important. Many incidents in companies are often inadvertently caused by its employees. Crew are the most vulnerable link on-board yachts and this training aims to learn how to identify common cyber-attack methods and techniques. The complete programme obviously also covers engineering familiarisation of a particular yacht as well as deck operations where good practice, weather awareness and safety are always a priority and a refresher in medical training ensuring that any crew will be capable of administering first response if required. Hill Robinson is confident that this new crew training initiative will further build on the firm foundations offered to Hill Robinson customers.

Whilst yachting offers a fantastic career, crew have to be mentally prepared for the stresses and challenges that the job brings – long hours, long periods of time away from family and the comforts of home, sharing your living space with the same people you work with almost 24/7.
4-7-8 breathing. This exercise also uses belly breathing to help you relax. You can do this exercise either sitting or lying down. To start, put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Take a deep, slow breath from your belly, and silently count to 4 as you breathe in. Hold your breath, and silently count from 1 to 7. Breathe out completely as you silently count from 1 to 8. Try to get all the air out of your lungs by the time you count to 8. Repeat 3 to 7 times or until you feel calm. Note how you feel at the end of the exercise.
Emotional Health
Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health and well being, so should not be neglected or overlooked. Prospective crew should take the time to do their research before accepting a job and carefully assess if they are compatible with the lifestyle. For those on-board, a few helpful tips: Respect and help your peers /crew members. Spend your free time doing what makes you smile. Stay connected with family and friends at home as much as possible. Crew should always be looking out for each other - keeping an eye out for warning signs such as being irritable or nervous behaviour; being atypically clumsy or accident prone; losing interest in appearance or change of sleep/eating behaviours. Remember it is “OK not to be OK”… don’t bottle things up, talk to a fellow crew member or reach out to someone at home to help you. There are many other avenues of help such as www.seafarerhelp.org which offers free 24/7, confidential, multi-lingual help. You may not be able to change the direction of the wind but you can always change your own sails…
Relaxation
Exercise. Get the blood pumping and adrenaline running! Exercise is a great way to clear your head and get rid of negative energy. Yoga and Meditation. In this hectic world we sometimes need to calm our minds, doing yoga and meditation will help you to achieve this. There are many meditation/mindfulness and yoga apps available and you can find meditation music on YouTube or Spotify. Keep organised and tidy, a tidy environment is a tidy mind. Music, Art, and all things beautiful. Yachting takes you to some amazing places. When you have some time off, do some research and visit a local historical town, museum or art gallery. Go to a concert or the theatre. Laughter. Laugh a lot – it’s contagious and a good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress. Laughter boosts the immune system and decreases stress hormones.

Career Development Whilst you are busy working hard, you should always keep in mind the development of your career. It isn’t achieved overnight, it is a work in progress, something you keep working on throughout your professional life and these tips may help: Set goals and create a plan to achieve them. Invest yourself 100% in your job, listen and take advice from your supervisors, be open to learn new things even outside of your area of expertise. Develop a timeline, including milestones although be reasonable and don’t skip steps. Find a mentor, maybe your Head of Department or an ex HoD who you trust and can act as such for advice. Utilise resources around you; existing training programmes on board, industry associations or professionals who can give advice. Get to know yourself, this is essential to understand others. Maintain a good work-life balance. Remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side…
We hope you enjoy our tips. We arrange HRcrew Seminars and Training Sessions across our various offices throughout the year so follow us on Facebook and Instagram – “HRCrew” to keep updated.

Built for the RAF, Silverstone was home to RAF 17 OTU, a training squadron of Vickers Wellington Mk X bombers. By 1947, as the roar of the twin Bristol Pegasus radial engines faded away, Silverstone like many of these airfields became a motor racing circuit, a pantheon of racing legends like Farina, Fangio and Jim Clark and the most technologically advanced cars of the day. Seventy years on and Silverstone in 2020 is now much more than just home to the British grand Prix, establishing itself as a centre of engineering excellence with cutting edge industries located in the new Silverstone Technology Park. As a fitting nod to the local automobile provenance, we visited two fascinating new businesses pushing the boundaries in luxury motoring and continuing the legacy of the fine British brands that still evoke the rich motoring history of bygone years.

Classic cars electrified “The Lunaz mission is to define the future of classics,” David Lorenz founder of Lunaz Design presents his mission, “we preserve the past by embracing the future, making the most beautiful cars in history a relevant proposition”. Adding to this, co-founder, MD and technical Lead, Jon Hilton adds: ”'The Lunaz solution takes classic cars that are under threat and gives them a new purpose. Our cars will be true originals in their aesthetics, peerless in their performance and effortless in their day-to-day use, breathing new life into the great classics. The final end to the internal combustion engine could see classic cars become just museum pieces, no way doing justice to these beautiful moving creative masterpieces, we offer discerning customers a workable solution”. The Lunaz solution is to create guilt-free and tax free motoring by rebuilding classic cars, a bit like a nut-and-bolt restoration with a complete new electric power train incorporated into the mix. Turning dreams into reality comes in the form of the initial resto-conversions to date, a 1961 eight seat Rolls Royce Phantom V, a 1953 Jaguar XK120 and a 1956 Rolls Royce Cloud. There is no limit on the car brands or type that can be offered to become a true unique 'daily driver' for the owner.
Each car, as the proposition rolls out, will be unique and bespoke to the customer, direct from the factory. The build process starts with a suitable donor car and for the owner the journey begins by becoming a partner in the build process, colourways and interior fitout are all developed as a partnership. The end result will be a powerful, roadworthy, whisper-quiet classic car that will have a new lease of life, the Jaguar XK120 now has 375hp on tap as opposed to the 180hp delivered by its original 3.4 litre engine. Far from simply removing the engine and dropping in a battery powered drive-train, the thought process goes much deeper. Let's take the big Rolls Royce as an example. From a general engineering overview the 6.2 litre engine was lifted out and replaced by a powerful electric motor giving seamless power from zero to top speed, plus the benefit of regenerative braking. The new power plant gives whisper quiet, vibrationfree motoring... rather like the intended offering by Rolls Royce. Lunaz produce their own specialist Lithium Ion batteries, configured for each classic car type. For the big Rolls, one battery fits into the engine bay and another is tucked away where the fuel tank was located, giving the car plenty of power and range. It will run all day in city traffic... driven by your chauffeur of course! The whole car is updated with delicate and sympathetic replacement instruments and gauges, modern navigation and entertainment systems and reconfigured suspension and power steering. The tactile interior is trimmed to precise customer requirements. The one thing missing? ...the exhaust pipes! The Lunaz is a perfect form of integration, a true case of synergy, protecting our motoring heritage, providing pride of ownership, having a classic that can be used in all areas as a daily driver, adding better performance, enhanced creature comforts and all the communications tech that comes with a new production car.

Almost a stone's throw away from the 11,000sqm Lunaz operation, David Brown Automotive is located in a new 18,000sqm facility. Formed in 2013, this new venture is a truly remarkable undertaking. Like all successful businesses there is a process that drives the venture and we need to look at the founder, David Brown and the history of a very successful engineering company founded by his father (also David Brown) that became global brand leaders in off-highway commercial vehicles, from dump trucks to mining and agricultural vehicles. As his father's very first employee David's own journey shaped his skills and knowledge in engineering design, development and production. The business was sold to Caterpillar and their success story grows and prospers around the world to this day.
Although David Brown had built a considerable portfolio of business ventures after the engineering business was sold, including restaurant chains, department stores, shoe shops, a brewery business and other property and specialist investments, one passion remained to be conquered and was the catalyst for creating the automotive company. David explains, “I really enjoy classic car rallies and on one occasion I was lent a really beautiful example to compete with. The performance was certainly 'classic', it regularly overheated and had primitive creature comforts. It finally broke down and this was the end of the rally with this car. But I wanted to complete the journey and hired a 'sensibly priced family car', as they coined on Top Gear, to continue. What a contrast, after the discomfort of classic car motoring.
A coach builder for the 21st Century
This was my light-bulb moment. Build a 'modern classic' with all the beautiful lines and nuances of the '60s but adding modern day performance, convenience and technology. As soon as I was back in the UK I started the quest to put together an elite team of UK specialists to realise my vision. In March 2014 'Speedback GT' was launched as a prototype, followed by the first deliveries in 2015”.
www.hillrobinson.com | www.hrcrew.com
54 46
Speedback vision First, decide on the key ingredients to reimagine the perfect iconic '60 style car; the lines of an E-type, an Aston Martin, maybe a hint of Maserati, a bit of a Riva motorboat perhaps, lightly seasoned with a sprinkle of Sophia Loren to bring out the Ferrari avour.
47 55
Next, create the car, but now with all the conveniences of modern motoring. Some 8,000 man-hours go into each immaculately engineered car; 3,200 alone just for the handbeating of the aluminium body. Every detail is individually machined, right down to the badge handcrafted by Thomas Fattorini, the badge and medal maker to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This is just a very small taster of what each bespoke Speedback will deliver to the owner. An end result transporting them back to a particular era and the special memories that it conjures up.
It’s all very well having the looks, but performance is just as important and in keeping with the car's British pedigree, a 510hp supercharged powertrain gives Speedback breathtaking performance that will rival most modern supercars. In all this is a modern supercar that truly can be utilised no matter where the journey takes you. If you fancy something just as evocative but a bit smaller, consider the David Brown Automotive remastered-Mini! Roy Roberts

From chartering aircraft for our clients, whether amphibious, fixed wing or helicopters, for group transport or moving cargo, then replacing these with more permanent solutions, HRaviation has steadily and speedily grown. Hill Robinson Partner, Karl Hartmann elaborates, “From then our specialisation in aviation services has multiplied with our involvement in helicopter operations on our yacht fleet, specifying and designing helipads, either adding this facility to yachts or upgrading landing areas to accommodate larger and heavier helicopters. This engineering section grew when clients asked us to continue in the development process with specifying and procurement of helicopters and more. Soon, HRaviation was created by adding pilots, maintenance services, operational management, training... and here we are now just a few years later working on mega-sized undertakings that encompass every facet of procuring and running entire aviation fleets. I now devote more than twenty five percent of my time to the aviation activities, working with our very talented team of aviation experts and owners”.
25 49
Robert Zimmermann, the Senior Aviation Manager for HRaviation continues, “Looking back at my career in all things aeronautical, I have now reached that perfect point where I can use all of my aviation experience to maximum effect on every level of aircraft operation, working with our expanding team of professionals. The team includes, Andreas Kolberg and Brett Dutton, both aviation managers, supported by Jacques Theron and Heinrich Strydom, facilities managers, plus James Meikle and MaryBeth Call managing the contracts/legal side. But as I have said, this a fast-growing team fully backed up and supported by accounting and administration teams, not to forget Andrew Morgan heading our Corporate Services branch”. The knowledge and experience that Robert brings to the HRaviation proposition illustrates the comments he makes about being in his 'perfect job'. From an early pilot's licence up to corporate pilot status, flight training, head of airworthiness, right through to aircraft maintenance, fleet procurement, operations... the list goes on. Robert continues, “I started my time with Hill Robinson in 2016 setting out the groundwork for a major undertaking that created HRaviation and a short time later helped in the development, set up and management of a sea plane fleet, systems and maintenance line stations, supplier selection and staff planning. The brief included budget planning, management of a combined helicopter fleet in a marine environment plus reporting and surveying for strategic fleet development. This operation sets the template for more development opportunities and we can present new clients with a fully tested, detailed operating package”.
New deliveries for 2020 and working with the Covid-19 lockdown As we close this edition of HarbouRnews we asked Robert to comment on the response to working through the Covid19 lockdown and news reports for the start of 2020: “First some exciting news regarding the hand-over of a new helicopter to a VVIP customer, ready to operate this summer season. This important large asset illustrates the major importance of the Hill Robinson Aviation division that is growing in parallel to the fast developing group activities, even as we work through the Covid-19 challenge. The new helicopter delivery brings our managed aircraft fleet to over a dozen aviation assets all over the world and the fleet is continuing to build. This brings me to the Covid-19 challenge and HRaviation's management operations across its large fleet of aircraft assets, pilots, ground staff and managers at all our locations and our response to the various lock-down restrictions. The important news is that, due to our careful operations management and the early placing of aircraft in their best strategic positions, there has not been the need to ground any of our aviation fleet, suspend operations or reduce staffing levels. We are confident we will be able to continue to offer our exceptional services while this epidemic plays-out”.

Working with Airbus With helicopters playing a major role in superyacht ship-to-shore and coastal operation, Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH) and Hill Robinson Aviation work together to get the most up-to-date machines in the sky to support a fast growing client requirement. For HRaviation this is more than a procurement function, such as standard specification helicopters that can be delivered to meet customer requirements. The specialisation comes with specifying, designing and developing custom aircraft to fit highly focussed roles for a range of clients and a range of flexible applications. HRaviation has many partners in the aviation field and ACH is a preferred helicopter supplier with a range of products that closely matches the footprint of the clients’ helicopter operation needs.
We spoke with Frederic Lemos, Head of Airbus Corporate Helicopters, who added his view on this successful relationship: “Here at Airbus Corporate Helicopters we have a constantly evolving product offering with a full range from singles and light-twins up to medium and super-medium helicopters for more demanding operations. Our twin turbine ACH145 has developed great momentum in superyacht ship-to-shore operations. It can be quickly configured for up to eight passengers and light cargo use, so it’s a very versatile tool to have onboard. This year a new version of this model utilising a five blade rotor design will enter service. It retains its compact size but is able to carry another 150kg. And we will also have the new supermedium ACH160 certified for service. We are very pleased to be working with HRaviation on a range of special projects, pushing the envelope in this important field of the superyacht/luxury travel”.
Asked if there are any new developments in electric powered aircraft that could impact the world of yachting, “We regularly see news items about the big names in commercial aviation harnessing “As well as working with Airbus,” Karl electric power for commercial flight. mentions, ”we are also working with When batteries become much lighter and Leonardo, Viking and Bell on specific the power density is available, we will see projects and with clients on new, leadinga future for this, perhaps starting with edge aviation solutions, but for now this small short-haul aircraft and air taxis. CHARTER MANAGEMENT
The Mediterranean charter market has seen ever-growing interest in the Balearic Islands as well as the Italian Riviera and Amalfi Coast. Equally more clients venture east to Croatia, Montenegro and the Greek islands. With strict charter regulations in Greece, (where only vessels holding a Greek licence can start or end charters in Greek waters), clients are encouraged to cruise the Ionian Islands, starting and finishing in Albania as one option.

Our team is always on top of the latest news and legislation that may affect yacht movement and subsequently any charter options, below are a few notable snippets.

MANY OF OUR LARGER YACHTS FOR CHARTER CARRY SMALL SAILING DINGHIES, SUCH AS LASERS, SOME ALSO ARE RYA RECOGNISED, SO CAN TEACH YOU OR GIVE YOU A REFRESHER COURSE
On 7th February 2020, the Greek authorities implemented the new VAT rule in order to apply the local VAT rate on charters which can only be discounted under a certain procedure, very similar to France and Italy.
ITALY End of the VAT lump sum reduction in case of cruising into international waters (6.6%) The Italian Budget Law for 2020 (Law no. 160 of December 27th, 2019) published on the Italian Official Gazette (GAZZETTA UFFICIALE) on December 30th 2019, changes the provision of the application of the Italian VAT due on short term charters with departure from the Italian territory. For all Italian charters (starting in Italy and/or those starting outside the EU territory and then entering in Italy), the ‘lump sum VAT criteria’ will no longer be applicable. When will this be applied: The law will enter into force from April 1st 2020, regardless of the date of signature and payment of the charter contract. All charter agreements for charters starting from 1st April 2020 will be subject to the new law so 22% VAT. How can yachts still benefit from a VAT reduction: Within 60 days from the publishing of the Italian Official Gazette (March 1st 2020), the Italian Inland Revenue (Agenzia delle Entrate) will issue a new method for the calculation of the effective use of the yacht outside the Union territory that will allow the Owning Company not to charge Italian VAT on this portion of use (it is still under discussion if the ‘effective use’ refers to the time or the miles spent in international waters).
It appears that the rules will generally depend on the yacht size: Crewed commercial yachts will be able to meet the requirement and enjoy a 50% discount on the final applicable VAT, whilst smaller bareboats will struggle to meet such requirements and will have to apply the full VAT rate of 24%. Commercial vessels up to 12 metres will not be able to benefit from any discounts. However charter voyages up to 48 hours irrespective of the vessel’s size, cannot claim any discount. Moreover, a specific rule will apply to commercial vessels that wish to engage in chartering in Greek waters without a Greek establishment (and a Greek charter licence) : to benefit from the VAT reduction, they will have to appoint a fiscal representative in order to issue a local VAT number and pay 24% VAT. If they are able to prove/meet the discount requirements they will receive a VAT refund. Here are a few rules to consider: A charter licence is required in Greece to charter a yacht: Without a licence, yachts are not allowed to embark or disembark passengers in Greece or to advertise a charter activity from Greek ports. The Greek charter licence requires a minimum number of days of charter every year (in Greece or abroad). The amount of days depends on the yacht. Specific yacht requirements: To charter in Greece, several requirements must be met regarding the crew (number and social security), the owner, the yacht (technical requirements), the clauses of the charter contract, the recording of the guests and yacht’s movements (charter log), the formalities. It is important to check with a local Greek correspondent how to comply with Greek rules in order to avoid any claim on the yacht and on supplies of goods and services in Greece. The rules regarding VAT applicable on supplies of goods, services and fuel changed at the end of December 2018 in Greece. Specific conditions must be met to obtain an exemption of VAT. It appears that this is similar to the 70% rule in France for the FCE, but more details still to be confirmed.

Day 1. Arrive Nassau, cruise to Allan Cay Day 2. Highbourne Cay Marina Day 3. Norman’s Cay Day 4. Shroud Cay Day 5. Waderick Wells Day 6. Cambridge Cay / Little Bells Cay Day 7. Staniel Cay Yacht Club and Big Majors Day 8. Compass Cay Day 9. Departure from Nassau
The Cays are the most exotic of the Out Islands, a collection of tiny jewels set in the aquamarine and sapphire of the most beautiful water you’ve ever imagined. It’s no wonder this has been named one of the top 10 things you absolutely must do in the Caribbean. Snorkel on notorious plane wrecks, meet the world-famous swimming pigs, dive into shark filled waters for fun or enjoy a cocktail and the ever so quaint Staniel Cay Yacht Club. Its reefs and island environments are so pristine that Bahamian government set aside a 176-square-mile section as the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, the first of its kind in the world and is famous for its pristine beauty, outstanding anchorages and breathtaking marine environment. Under its transparent turquoise waters are beautiful natural gardens of coral teeming with fish and lobster. The rarest living creatures of the park are stromatolites, blue-green, reef-forming algae, which are the oldest living evidence of life on Earth; some of them on Exuma Island and Stocking Island are believed to be 2,000 years old. Fossil stromatolites date back 3.5 billion years. Allan’s Cay is one of the last homes of the rare Bahamas rock iguanas. Feed the iguanas and take lots of pictures since you can only see them on two islands on Earth! Looks can be deceiving. While they may look fierce, iguanas actually are a gentle lizard. Highbourne Cay. There are 9 beaches surrounding the island. On the eastern shore you will find a mile long, curving beach, one of the most beautiful in The Bahamas. The Cay has a lot to offer both snorkellers and divers. The entire eastern shoreline is strewn with numerous shallow reefs and offers good snorkelling just off the beach. Just off the NW shore of the island lies the remains of the `6th century Bahamian shipwreck first discovered in 1965.

Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a natural wonder waiting to be discovered. Exuma Cays in the Bahamas is renowned world-wide for its great beauty and friendly people. It is not only an attractive tourist destination because of its sheer beauty and slow-moving pace, but this incredible island also boasts of the world’s first land and sea park Established in 1959 by The Bahamas National Trust. It stretches for 176 square miles and is a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Shroud Cay, an uninhabited cay owned by Exuma Park, is an archipelago of cays and rocks surrounding a shallow tidal mangrove salina which serves as a unique nursery for conch, lobster, sea turtles, birds and many varieties of fish. Hawksbill, an uninhabited cay owned by Exuma Park, has numerous soft sand beaches on both the western and eastern shores of the cay. Particular highlights for visits here include the Layalist Ruins, the spectacular beaches, and the amazing harbours and bays. Aside from incredible beauty, Compass Cay is most notably recognized for the unique ‘friendly’ nurse sharks that reside below the docks of the marina. As you motor your boat into the marina, you will be greeted by a number of them, and perhaps a ray or two, who will escort you in, hoping to be fed a scrap or two. CHARTER DOUBLE D, IF YOU DON’T WANT TO TAKE IT QUITE SO SLOW
Very tough choice, but we’ve gone for The Exumas as a possible itinerary. The Exumas are a 120-mile-long island chain-within-the-chain of the Out Islands, with the Exuma Cays scattered in a long line extending north-east toward New Providence from Great Exuma.

Who owns?
BACA x2
Baca is a latin word, meaning berry, derived from Bacchus, who was the Roman god of wine and having a good time. In the world of Kathryn and Craig Hall however, it has two more, although the association with Bacchus is strong. Baca is the name of their 43m Denship yacht, on which they enjoy their family time, the other Baca, a wonderful Californian wine produced by their daughter, Jennifer.
At times the two have been combined, what better venue for unveiling the new Zinfandel from their Californian winery on-board the family’s new yacht in Fort Lauderdale last February. Kathryn, with Jennifer who is the director of wine brand Baca, put the top deck to good use in hosting a successful launch party for this new brand, utilising her diplomatic skills and enjoying the moment and feeling very much in her element. No surprise for Kathryn grew up amongst boats and wine. “As a kid, I used to like sailing in the San Francisco Bay. And as a California girl, I think water and the ocean is just part of who I am,” she says. And the wine, her parents bought a winery in Mendocino County in the 1970s, which she helped run after they died. However, when she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, she had a different ambition. “I wanted to be a lawyer and I wanted to save the world,” she says. “Winemaking wasn’t my goal when I first started; I thought it was political change”.
BACA WINES, A MODERN ZINFANDEL WINE BRAND BY THE MAKERS OF HALL & WALT WINES IS BASED IN NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA.

She became a lawyer, a business woman and a community activist. Upon moving to Dallas, she entered the mayoral race and it was during a meeting requesting his support for her campaign that she met Craig Hall. The rest, as they say, is history and they were married little more than a year later. Next came the family, who moved to Europe en masse when the Clinton administration asked Kathryn to be the US ambassador to Austria. After 4 years of service, the family returned to the US and also returned to winemaking starting with Hall Wines in Napa Valley. In little over two decades the vineyards have grown to include Hall Wines, Walt Wines and Baca, also becoming one of the most respected wine producers in the US and beyond. From sailing boats in San Francisco Bay, the Halls ventured into the field of large yacht ownership, with a 40 metre Amels named Monte Carlo, which they had for around ten years, but which like investments, wine and quite a few other yachts had to go at the time of the 2008 recession. Recently the Halls bought a 43 metre Royal Denship yacht, which they named Baca. On the idea of a small refit, as she told Cecile Gauert from Boat International, “I actually thought the boat was beautiful on the interior even when I first saw it. I think we were able to sort of brighten it up and make it a little more personal to us”. They added their own stamp, including pieces of art, which they both love and collect. “The yacht feels airy and comfortable and the bar on the top deck is perfect for wine tasting. The decor is very, very light and it’s full of punches of colour, which makes me feel happy, but I don’t think you want so much colour that it’s really intense. I think the real beauty of being out on the ocean, is the ocean itself,” says Kathryn, who loves swimming in the open sea. Charter is also built into the yacht schedule, not only to help with expenses but also to keep the crew happy and engaged. “I think it’s healthy for a crew to have charters that they are working on or looking forward to. Whether you are a crew on a boat or you are working in an office, being busy, I think, hones your skills and makes you better at what you do”. So hopefully Baca in all its forms, will be there to bring happiness and joy to others.

It is time for the Superyacht Industry to take action on its CO2 emissions. The world is waking up to the impact of climate change. The drop in activity resulting from the global Covid 19 lockdowns has demonstrated forcefully the impact of pollution in our cities and around the world. Whilst the visual impact of reduced smog is more to do with other exhaust gases, it points to the broader impact of manmade emissions from fossil fuels. People worldwide are increasingly aware of the urgency to limit emissions of greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide, CO2. The call for action comes stridently from activists of all ages, vociferously from most politicians, and seriously from business leaders and prominent families that are concerned about sustainability and reputation. These calls are coupled with commitments to reduce greenhouse gas impact – in context of the choices that the ‘caller’ can influence or decide. It is time for the superyacht community to respond fully and effectively.

International action
Carbon Offsetting - a key element
The 1997 Kyoto Protocol introduced ambitious goals for international action on greenhouse gases. Following this, the Paris Agreement in 2015 established a target to hold global warming “well below” 2 degrees above pre-industrial temperatures and to “make efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees”. Many industries, corporations, banks, local governments and cities have announced their own plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with action taking the form of binding net-zero emission targets, renewable energy deployments, divestment of unsuitable investments and clean energy financing. Encouragingly, the younger generations are also getting their voices heard, with Greta Thunberg seizing the initiative and the headlines.
Whilst the Superyacht Industry transitions to more efficient technologies and develops new green energy solutions, carbon offsetting can today make a difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the fuel used on-board. Of course, the fuel used is only one element of the emissions produced during the lifecycle and operation of a superyacht but, at least it is one that is easily measured and understood.
Superyacht community responding The Superyacht Industry is no exception to the rule and is taking many positive steps. Solutions towards lowering a yacht’s carbon footprint focus on such things as state-of-the-art hull design and engine technologies, and innovative anti-fouling products, all of which reduce fuel consumption. Innovative new designs include solar panels to supplement the yacht’s fossil-fuel power base, advanced battery and power management systems, and even emerging fuel cell technologies. Some designers are even considering the (not so) revolutionary idea of including sails on Superyachts – now who would have thought of that!

How carbon offsetting works In brief, Carbon Offsetting works by balancing the greenhouse gas emissions, tonne for tonne, with emission savings from ‘green energy’ power projects, such as wind, solar, hydro or geothermal power generation. Power projects of this nature displace fossil-fuel based power generation plants from the power grid, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ‘savings’ are equivalent to the quantity of CO2 that would have been generated if the same amount of electricity had been generated by the fossil-fuel plant. Offset projects can also include tree planting, or other social energy use projects, but the CO2 benefit is not immediate, being achieved longer-term over a number of years.
Carbon Offsetting is an immediate and effective action A key advantage of carbon offsetting is that it can be carried out today by individuals or entities to offset the impact of historic emissions, as well as in advance of future anticipated emissions. Carbon offsetting should, wherever possible, be adopted in conjunction with other emission reduction policies and be used as a tool to mitigate unavoidable carbon emissions. Think of it as an important piece of an environmental jigsaw. It does not provide an individual or entity an excuse to carry on polluting. The superyacht industry should be encouraged to continue to develop other solutions to help reduce its carbon footprint. We invite each yacht owner to make an impact by adopting as many of those jigsaw pieces that they find most meaningful, or that suit their lifestyle and budget. After all, if everyone takes responsibility for their own emissions, large or small, the collective impact will be significant.

UPCYCLING MARINE PLASTICS Spinning technologies allow development by air texturing, texturing by false twist, mechanical twisting and elasticisation. These threads can also be dyed en masse or on spool and woven as well as worked on circular or seamless knitting machines. This fibre offers the same properties and qualities as a fibre made from virgin polyester fibre, its ecological footprint is without comparison. It actively participates in cleaning the seabed and saves up 20% in water consumption, 40% in energy and reduce CO2 emissions by 50%.
In order to make a positive impact on this global problem, recycled materials have 98% less impact on the planet. Most of her products contain Upcycled Marine Plastic and the concept is to clean the marine environment by driving humanity towards this circular economy. She believes that Inspiring people to be a part of the solution is necessary, if we want to improve the environment.
This fibre is a starting point for a sustainable ocean. For every kilo of this fibre used, a kilo of garbage is removed from the sea bed. For example, to make towels, linens for a 100 bedroom hotel, using this eco-friendly products could help take 1.6 metric tonnes of waste from the ocean. This is an exceptional opportunity for the industry to make a big difference.
With a vertical production process, with controlled traceability, the recycled plastic collected, is turned into granules, yarns and fabric, based on responsible manufacturing. This came from a collaborative model, which involved NGO’s, fisherman, local communities, researchers, scientist and national/local authorities and private stakeholders to clean the ocean floor, surface, rivers and estuaries, beaches and coastline.
Its fabrics are labelled recycled and are based on the composition of the percentage of material from recycled plastic.

It all started with 400 partner fishing boats which the plastic waste comes from, a network of a Mediterranean fishermen retrieve garbage from the sea bed and bring it back to the port. Here, it’s collected and delivered to specialist centres. Then, separated, cleaned, recycled and turned into usable fibre by our partner. So, that they can spin and mix with cotton to make towels, bed linens, bathrobes etc..

CLAUDIA CHERKI
Claudia Cherki’s passion for the sea and her involvement in Monaco have driven her to conceive fashion designs in innovative, sustainable fabrics, opting to give a second life to certain materials. By using plastic materials recycled from the sea, her brand is also part of the ecological fight. Every year, 8 million tons of garbage end up in the oceans, 75% of which lay deep on the sea bed with plastic waste predicted to outweigh the fish in the sea by 2050, this has now become a global crisis.
Claudia Cherki is a fashion entrepreneur and a graduate of the International University of Monaco. Both her passion for the sea and her conviction that people and businesses can be committed to sustaining the environment have driven her to contribute to the reevaluation of consumer waste that is lost to the environment. With her eco-friendly creations, Claudia is specialised in supplying personalised and embroidered garments and uniforms for all professionals in Yachting, hotels and restaurants.
OUR ENVIRONMENT
Coral reefs are the foundation of the Maldives. They protect their low-lying islands from the eroding forces of the sea, provide the setting for the country’s most lucrative industry, tourism, and support every fishery in the country.
BLUE MARINE FOUNDATION
Yet less than 1% of the Maldives is fully protected and due to overfishing, pollution, habitat destruction and climate change, the reefs are losing their effect. Historically, Maldivian people rarely ate coral reef fish, preferring tuna. However, since the arrival of tourism in the 1970’s pressure on coral reef fish stocks has increased drastically. Now more than 140 resorts, 400 guest houses and over 150 liveaboards operate in the Maldives, most of which purchase reef fish to serve to their guests to eat and offer recreational fishing trips for tourists. Unfortunately, this fishing is not regulated or managed at all.

The Blue Marine Foundation offer some guidance when visiting the Maldives: 1. Do not catch or eat parrotfish. They are important herbivores on coral reefs. 2. Do not catch or eat protected species (napoleon wrasse, sharks and rays). 3. Fish using selective gears such as handline and trolling to minimise bycatch. 4. Do not catch or eat the four threatened species of grouper: Brown marbled grouper, Camouflage grouper, Giant grouper, Square tailed grouper. 5. Do not fish or eat any groupers when spawning ie. a new moon or full moon. 6. Anchor on sandy bottoms to avoid causing destruction to coral reefs. 7. Do not fish at anchored fishing aggregating devices, prohibited by law.

MEDITERRANEAN SEAGRASS
PROTECTION OF
www.hillrobinson.com | www.hrcrew.com
New French anchorage laws, due to be in place for the 2020 yachting season, affect yachts over 24m in order to protect endangered marine plant species, most notably Posidonia. The underwater plant, or ‘seagrass’, grows between the shoreline and 25m depth and is believed to be one of the most important sources of oxygen provided to coastal waters. “Yachts over 24m will not be allowed to drop their anchors into the seagrass. Seagrass, typically, takes around 60 years to grow and reach maturity and is, therefore, sensitive to disruption,” says Thierry Voisin, president of the ECPY.
“The ECPY fully supports the need to protect this vital marine resource. However, we consider current proposals on enforcing the new laws to be unacceptable. We are working closely with the Prefecture Maritime Mediterranee to create a solution that works for all”. The challenge, according to Voisin, is to change attitudes from ‘everything is allowed, except that which is forbidden’ to ‘everything is forbidden, except that which is allowed’. The hope is that the law changes will not a constitute a total ban on yachts being in the protected areas, provided they are moored in such a way that does not disturb or damage the seagrass.

CLEAR OCEAN PACT, A YEAR ON. CLEAR OCEAN PACT is the yachting industry’s only non-profit, non-biased initiative with one mission: To unite the superyacht industry in removing its dependency on single-use plastic, and eliminating the microplastic pollution that enters our oceans as a direct result of a superyacht's daily operations. This is achieved through the PACT - 5 pledges to support the industry in achieving these goals, and to promote awareness and the sharing of information on viable alternative products and practices. The PACT is voluntary, non-accredited and designed to engage those who wish to start making a change to the consumption of single-use plastic in yachting. In the last year we have signed up 120 yachts to the PACT and it is now supported by the PYA, MYBA and the YPIY.
The PACT consists of 5 realistic and effective pledges: 1. To avoid any use of plastic bottled drinking water on-board. 2. To filter and safely dispose of all washing machine microplastic waste. 3. To eliminate the use of all single-use plastic items with readily available alternatives, starting with the items due to be banned by the EU in 2021. (Plastic cotton buds, cutlery, plates, straws, drink-stirrers and balloon sticks). 4. To reduce the use of single-use plastic toiletries on-board. 5. To actively source provisions with low single-use plastic footprint packaging.
We have signed up – what are you waiting for? “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. http://clearoceanpact.org/#lead-the-change
We have also been working on a collaborative project with Just One Ocean to launch the world’s first citizen science Big Ocean Plastic Survey. This is an app that will be promoted amongst crew to record and log plastic waste and locations for the scientific community to access as open source data. This will help to identify the 8m tonnes of plastic waste entering our oceans each year. An office edition of the PACT has been launched for shorebased companies

Upholding the tradition of putting on such a joyous and good humoured regatta, once again the Voiles d’Antibes saw one of the biggest gatherings of classic yachts in the Mediterranean. Had it not been for Hill Robinson stepping in as major sponsor, the 2019 event may not have happened at all. But in challenging and variable conditions, with a huge swell putting a stop to one day’s racing, the fleet of around 75 yachts competed for the trophies, with Hallowe’en coming out on top of the big boats fleet, while Moonbeam of Fife picked up the Hill Robinson Teamwork Award. In the Voiles d'Antibes village in Port Vauban, there was plenty going on to entertain with musical events from salsa and soul, to rock and reggae happening throughout the period. Having taken part on many occasions, the partners of Hill Robinson were very pleased to be able to support such an illustrious regatta and will look forward to the next.
