Director’s Message
Director’s Message Orenco Station is abuzz with all kinds of construction these days. In addition to various high-rise apartment buildings there are two new public spaces to provide some unique areas for you to enjoy. Nestled between three buildings in the Platform District and the Tri Met GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION Station is Orenco Station Plaza – an urban park providing a vibrant flexible gathering place. Among its amenities are a water feature, decorative lighting, site furniture, public art and an elevated boardwalk under two magnificent oak trees. I invite you to stop by for the grand opening celebration at 4 pm, August 22, and see what this new area has to offer. Mark your calendars for 4 pm, August 22, 2015 October 10 when OrenKofest Portland Taiko Drumming • Public Art Unveiling • Refreshments • Presentations debuts as our first harvest festival and special event at the Plaza. Later this year the plaza will be transformed into a winter village, complete with our very own ice skating rink opening in December. Look for a full calendar of special events at this urban park in 2016. Just down the road from the Plaza is Cornell Creek Park, a new four acre neighborhood park on the southwest corner of Cornell and NW 231st Avenue. This park, constructed largely by Parks and Recreation staff, will be completed by the end of October and will feature our first bocce ball courts, outdoor ping-pong table, an off-leash dog area, a nature play area and walking trails. Fall is a fabulous time to get outside and experience all that Hillsboro Parks and Recreation has to offer. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions as to how we can better serve you, please send them our way.

Once a month make time in your day to relax and take in the eastern sky as the sun sets and the moon rises. This evening vivid colors paint the sky, the earth’s shadow rises, heralding the coming of night, and a full moon makes its dramatic entrance into the night sky. Daytime wildlife seeks shelter as nighttime creatures emerge. Join us thirty minutes before sunset, once a month, at select City of Hillsboro park sites. A Parks & Recreation naturalist will be on hand to help you tune in to the many wonderful events that attend the passing of day into night. Dress comfortably for the weather. Bring a chair and something warm to drink if you like.
Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is pleased to invite you and your family to join us for an evening of nature, science and fun. Take a look at animal tracks, study skulls, investigate insects and go on a twilight hike with one of our trained naturalists. Meet live education birds from Portland Audubon Slociety. Learn about owls and what they cough up, visit the art table and make a cool craft, check out the Exhibit Hall, eat some FREE popcorn and have a great time! Then we’ll do some stargazing with Rose City Astronomers, weather permitting. Volunteers will provide telescopes and share views of celestial objects with the public. Now is the perfect time to think about and plan for the upcoming flu season to avoid potential health risks. The flu poses a very serious health risk to all ages of the population. Author, speaker and filmmaker Sig Unander highlights the life of Claire Phillips Snyder, the only woman to receive America’s highest civilian decoration. Hear about the risks she took to aid sick and starving prisoners of war. Learn about her betrayal and torture by enemy secret police, and her incredible survival. Located in the heart of Downtown Hillsboro, the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center is built on a site with a rich history of community involvement that began when Trinity Lutheran Church began construction of the building in 1947. Members of the parish pitched in and labored together to construct the frame of the building, donating both their goods and talents to create the church which would later become the Walters Cultural Arts Center in 2004.
Walters Cultural Arts Center
Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center
The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for youth and adult art education and training, community access to excellent regional and national artists and speakers, and increased opportunities for local arts organizations, and professional and emerging artists. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered education in the arts. The establishment of the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center and its programming has enabled the City of Hillsboro to expand and enrich the services available to its residents and the surrounding community.
Culture & Creativity Come Together:
The Walters is home to diverse range of cultural offerings through our Concert Series, Gallery Season, and Tuesday Happenings. Our arts education programming includes camps and classes for students of all ages in ceramics, painting, drawing, theatre, music, animation, and more. The Walters is a proud showplace for the arts and a vibrant representation of Hillsboro’s commitment to culture and the arts. Creativity, culture and community—your cultural arts center has it all!
Celebrate Your Special Event:
With its classic red-stone architecture, stained glass features, custom woodwork ceiling arches, concert-quality sound system, and fine art gallery, the Walters is one of the west side’s most treasured sites for weddings, parties and other special events. Whether you’d like an intimate family reception for 40 guests in our fine art gallery, an extravagant party for 200 in the theatre, or an outdoor reception on the lawn, the Walters provides a variety of amenable and affordable options for your special event. Rio Con Brio
Naomi Wachira
Rio Con Brio captivates audiences around the country with their virtuosic guitar and mandolin playing. Mike Burdette and Tim Connell’s finesse and passion in their playing shines through in their music and in the deep connection to their audience. The evening is a delightful tour of European and New World music as told by two soulful, intelligent, modern musicians. Hailing from the Northwest, the duo performs a beautiful intersection of Brazilian rhythm, classical technique and jazz improvisation. Influenced by equal parts Afro-Brazilian rhythms and the contemporary cafe music of Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, the music is both exotic and familiar, evoking the carnival of Rio and the cafes of Paris. rioconbrio.net
Lauded in 2013 as Best Folk Singer in Seattle, Naomi Wachira is an artist of formidable talent and heart. Seattle Music Insider notes how her performances “are marked by her strong stage presence, storytelling and enduring smile.” Inspiring devoted fans in the music community right from the start, Wachira’s debut album was produced by well-known indie musician Damien Jurado. Her music is a melding of rich sources from her childhood in Kenya, her Northwest home, and such American inspirations as Tracy Chapman and Miriam Makeba. Her music and songwriting brings together harmonies that speak across continents and cultures. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the region’s most celebrated folk artists, and a rising star on the international music scene. naomiwachira.com

The Barn Owls
Friday, 11/13 | 7:30 pm | $15 advance | $20 day of show | Vintage Country One late summer evening, musicians Brittany Newell, Hanna Traynham and Kate Lichtenstein spent hours trading tunes around a woodstove. By the end of the night, The Barn Owls was born. Newell grew up playing classical violin and piano and learned to appreciate the intricacy of old melodies. Traynham’s distinct Appalachian claw-hammer banjo style transports you to a fiddler’s convention campsite. Lichtenstein’s guitar playing follows in the tradition of solid rhythm and bass, but she isn’t afraid to take improvisational turns. The Barn Owls bring their formidable musicianship and inventive spark to the early country music tradition. With intuitive finesse, they mix high-energy dance tunes and beautiful three-part harmonies to bring exciting performances to audiences across the region. barnowlsmusic.com Concert concessions provided by Longbottom Coffee & Tea | With thanks to our sponsors: Embassy Suites and Claeys Catering 56

An Evening with Kate Davis
Patrick Ball: Legends of the Celtic Harp
A rapidly-rising star, New York based vocalist and instrumentalist Kate Davis has been thrilling Northwest audiences and turning heads for years—from her early days in West Linn to recent lauded performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. A testament to her talent, she has shared the stage with such artists as Eryka Badu and Renee Flemming. This fall Davis makes a long awaited return to the Walters stage with a riveting collection of new and original music to share. Vivid and nostalgic melodies materialize out of Kate’s musical arrangements, while her songbird voice is complimented by a rich bass-line. Heralded by MTV as one of 2014’s “15 Fresh Females Who Will Rule Pop,” her lifelong training makes for smart, warm music that’s as nuanced as it is memorable. katedavismusic.com
Three of the premier Celtic harpers in the world—Patrick Ball, Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter—come together to present A Winter Gift, a beautiful collection of Irish and English literature woven together with beloved and rare pieces of holiday music. This special performance of enchanting stories and rare instrumentation celebrates the central message of the season. A Northwest favorite who is internationally renowned, Patrick Ball brings storytelling together with the crystalline, bell-like voice of the legendary brass-strung harp of Ireland. In performing these marvelous tales of wit and enchantment, he not only brings new life to two cherished traditions, but blends them in concert to create a richly theatrical and hauntingly beautiful performance that is sure to be one of the highlights of the season. patrickball.com

Jim Matthew
The work of Jim Matthew resonates with the subliminal drama and layered complexities of inner life: here, recognizable figures and images emerge from a cacophony of abstract elements, making a liquid dance between the chaos of experience and the ordering power of the conscious mind. Matthew’s work reveals a sometimes disorienting world shaped by composites of past and present, memory, sound, color, and ceaseless sensation. Each painting mirrors the method by which Matthew creates his art, taking intuitive paths to narrate singular moments of being. Through his work, viewers enter into the fluid currents and territories of experience that surge always just beneath the surface.

Celebrating the Art of Hillsboro Medieval cartographers used the images of monsters, sea serpents, or other mythological creatures to mark uncharted territories on maps for would-be explorers. The phrase hic sunt dracones, or “here be dragons”, has come to mean an unexplored place with possible danger. Here Be Art! turns a positive light on the unknown, inviting would-be explorers to discover a world of local creativity and fine arts in the Walters gallery. This exhibit unveils an exciting geography of Hillsboro artists and projects, emphasizing the idea that art is happening all around us—often in unexpected forms. The artwork for this exhibit is highlighted by Artosaur, a mythical symbol which draws attention and visibility to the many artists at work in our community. This larger-than-life robotic dinosaur which serves as an advocate for the arts, an interactive art project aimed at bringing celebration and visibility to the local creativity of Hillsboro. Patrons can to meet Artosaur at the First Tuesday exhibit openings, along with the fascinating local artists who live and work among us. Discover the unexpected!

Larry Cwik
Upstairs Gallery December 1 — January 25 The work of Larry Cwik traverses the five coastal nations of the Arctic, capturing the ingenuity and challenge of life and the changing conditions of the region. Though remote and little-visited by outsiders, the ecology of the Arctic is critically intertwined with the ecology of the Northern Hemisphere— and the planet as a whole. This exhibit provides a necessary and timely window into this remote, foreboding and beautiful place, as photographed during Cwik’s travels throughout the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. Cwik’s large-scale limited-edition photographs stir reflection about our global relationship to the people and ecology of the Far North, and remind us of the delicate interconnectedness of our planet’s people and places.

Poets and lovers of poetry alike gather for a casual evening of shared inspiration and poetic camaraderie. All are invited to sign up for the open mic, though respectful listeners are equally welcome and appreciated.
Third Tuesday: Spoken Word Series
The Spoken Word Series highlights the power and art of the oral tradition in its myriad of forms: live storytelling, artist talks, lectures, readings, discussions and more. Selected guests deliver performances and talks on a wide variety of topics pertaining to art and culture. Spoken Word events take place every other month in the Walters Theatre (unless otherwise mentioned) to allow for larger audiences. As always, Spoken Word performances and discussions are free and open to the public.
