Marilyn Keller Brings Her Passionate, Roof-Raising Voice to the Walters What drew you to the music industry? I was encouraged by my first music teacher, Mrs. Linda McAllister, to sing, dance, and act. She had so much faith in me and my performance ability, even at five years of age. When the opportunity arose for me to step into a lead vocalist position in a band here in Portland, in 1981—there was no hesitation. What are your fondest musical memories?
“I am at my most joyful when I am singing.” — Marilyn Keller With over 35 years in the music industry, Marilyn Keller’s astonishing voice and power as a performer make her one of the most celebrated musical tours de force in the Northwest. An inductee into the Oregon Jazz Hall of Fame, her versatile repertoire and musical passions traverse R&B, pop, blues, and gospel music. She recently starred in the sold-out production of Regina Taylor’s Crowns at Portland Playhouse: a celebration of song, dance, and African American culture receiving stellar reviews from The Oregonian, Willamette Week, and Broadway World. An indemand vocalist, Keller frequently collaborates with fellow metro area jazz luminaries such as Ezra Weiss and Darrel Grant, and is the vocalist for Black Swan Classic Jazz Band and the Augustana Lutheran Church’s Jazz Quartet. This December, the Walters welcomes Keller for a special performance, highlighting the power of music to inspire and connect us to one another through unity and peace. Here she shares a bit of her musical journey with Cultural Arts staff.

Growing up in a home where love was the order of the day. A large family—five girls, two boys—could be a situation where you could get lost in the hectic shuffle, but not mine. I was given the opportunity to explore the world through books, movies, and my own experiences. Many nights, I fell into bed exhausted, but so happy to have lived the day as it was! Moving from a small town in New Mexico to Portland, Oregon was an eye-opening experience, but I don’t believe I would be as deeply ensconced in the industry had my father and mother not made the decision to move the family. I cannot envision how my path would have taken me to all of the places I have been, as a professional performance artist. You started your career as a Top-40 Band Vocalist. Can you tell me how your musical style transformed into what it is now? Actually, I have the joy of my heritage to thank for my evolution. I discovered at every level of performance ability, that my spiritual/ gospel roots, are the basis of all of the music I was learning to sing. Every facet of contemporary music today, can be traced back to the African-American Diaspora. The blues, jazz, rock & roll, R&B, soul, funk, rap, hip hop, disco, techno-pop―ALL of it has roots in the African Experience here in America. I was fortunate to be invited to share my natural gifts in many different styles, and being someone who only wants to stand and deliver her best, I studied, I listened, I absorbed each and every style I could, and I became a “musical chameleon,” if I may…I invested in vocal instruction technique to learn how to preserve the one and ONLY vocal instrument I will ever possess. I read you have worked with local youth music programs, high school students, and college students. What do you feel is the connection between music and education? Music is education—there is no disconnect. I know beyond a shadow of doubt that music made me capable of so much more academically, athletically, spiritually, and mentally as a student of life! Science has proven through study and application that music opens avenues of thought, fires synapses, builds logical thought processes, and enhances math, language, and science skills. What is one thing you can share about yourself that people may find surprising. I have a wicked sense of humor and JUSTICE is my goal!

Fresh for fall 2019, Portland Opera to Go presents their poignant adaptation of Puccini’s classic story of love and loss in the Latin Quarter, La Bohème. Engaging, accessible, and full of romantic intrigue, La Boheme is a persisting classic whose riveting tale of love and loss has continued to move audiences for over a century. Puccini’s masterpiece concerns the fortunes of four young men whose lives are changed forever when one of them—Rodolfo—falls in love with the girl upstairs. With themes of love, friendship, facing adversity, and coming-of-age, Portland Opera To Go’s La Boheme is an exciting opportunity to introduce younger audiences to opera. Nostalgia, Wit, and Powerhouse Vocals Take the Stage to Benefit the Arts
About the Endowment:
In 1963, the same year that a young Barbra Streisand released her first Grammy winning album, she appeared on The Judy Garland Show and performed a duet with the show host. The musical medley of Happy Days Are Here Again and Get Happy, by two of the 20th century’s most iconic voices, became an instant classic and the inspiration for this very special supper club more than 50 years later.
The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment is dedicated to creating a permanent funding source to support non-profit arts organizations and individual artists working in all genres of art.
Portland musical theater legends Merideth Kaye Clark and Susannah Mars are teaming up to celebrate the music of Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland at the Happy Days are Here Again! Supper Club on Saturday, November 9. Clark has played definitive leading theatrical roles nationwide, such as Elphaba in the First National Tour of Wicked, Eva Perón in Evita (Northern Stage), and Nancy in Oliver! (5th Avenue Theatre), and has originated roles in two offBroadway musicals. She is a sought-after concert artist described by critics as “plain astonishing” and “a masterful performer” with “powerhouse pipes.” Described as “the golden girl of Portland’s musical theater scene,” Mars is a resident artist at Artists Repertory Theatre and has also appeared with the Portland Opera in Sweeney Todd, as Golde in Fiddler on the Roof at Portland Center Stage, and performed with Portland Playhouse. Mars and Clark will be accompanied by pianist David Saffert, who has recently taken the stage as Liberace in Liberace & Liza: A Tribute. Don’t miss this night of artful ambiance, witty repartee, and nostalgia, all while benefitting the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment.

With works inspired by nature and the majesty of the Northwest, this exhibit highlights three artists that play with elements of atmosphere, luminosity, and reflection in their landscapes and subjects. Mediums range from plein air watercolor, pastel, and oil over copper foil. The resulting combination evokes a feeling of serene calm, giving the viewer an opportunity to stop and reflect on the majestic beauty of Oregon.

Creative Aging: The Significance of Art for the Aging Brain with Elizabeth Higgins
Tuesday, October 15 | 7 pm | Walters Theatre | Free When it comes to preserving our mental and physical abilities as we age, the adage “use it or lose it” has been confirmed by recent studies in the field of neuroscience. Findings from current creativity experts have further strengthened the case for using the arts to improve the quality of life for older adults through creative expression and meaningful social engagement. In this presentation, artist and instructor Elizabeth M. Higgins shares her knowledge about the significance of art for the aging brain, as well as provides an engaging creative activity for attendees.

View From the Top: Documentary Challenges Stereotypes
Why this film? Why now?
Who’s on Top? LGBTQs Summit Mt. Hood tells the emotional story of members of the LGBTQ community who challenge stereotypes about gender and sexuality and demonstrate their diverse journeys in overcoming physical and figurative mountains. Devin Tau, the director of this documentary, is a gay, Asian-American filmmaker whose storytelling reflects nearly four decades of cultural silence imposed on him by both his native and adopted cultures from his earliest years as an immigrant to the United States. One of the climbers featured in the film, Ryan Stee, is a fourth-generation Oregonian, raised on a farm in a conservative lumber town in Central Oregon. He’s currently a Project Manager with the City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department. Tau and Stee recently sat down with Tami Cockeram, the Community Services Manager for the City of Hillsboro and a member of the City’s Equity team, to discuss the film and the upcoming screening at the Walters Cultural Arts Center on November 23. 10
Tau: Same-sex marriage might be the law of the land, but the fight for LGBTQ rights is far from over. The rights we have worked so hard to gain are again being challenged and we are denied our basic humanity. What better way than summiting Mount Hood and show our collective power and say “We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re rising to the top?” Why did you decide to be in Who’s on Top? Stee: I saw the casting call and thought this could be fun, taking the course with people in my community and doing some interviews on film. I quickly realized that the project could be a lot more for me personally. At the time I had already been on a journey of “change,” moving forward and finding reconciliation with various life difficulties, traumas, and realities. As I went through the interview process and in discussion with close friends, I realized this could be a mechanism to “get through” my journey and potentially help “a gay kid in some small town like me.” It was not an easy decision to say yes. The thought of repercussions, exposure, and how my personal life story would be portrayed was terrifying, but if I could have one person have a moment of relief knowing they weren’t the “only one” and “there is someone like me,” that made it worth it to me.

What does Mount Hood have to do with promoting a more inclusive society?
What did you learn making this film? What will audiences learn?
Tau: Plenty! It’s an icon of the Pacific Northwest, yet for centuries its access has been limited to an exclusive club of rugged, mostly male, white mountaineers. Our group’s diversity—with non-traditional, non-white, and transgender participants—turns that all-boys club on its head. We prove that being inclusive is an advantage, not a liability.
Tau: Hope is a much more powerful motivator than fear. That’s true for summiting a mountain, and it’s true for a society trying to decide how to move forward in the 21st century. There are tears in this film, but there is laughter, joy, and hope.
Just how hard is it to reach the summit? Tau: Rule #1 is “don’t underestimate Mount Hood!” Our team worked for months to gather equipment and do the kind of training it required. It’s not just the unpredictable weather, which can be mild one minute and wild the next. Climbing down the mountain is just as fraught with danger as the way up. Stee: Being asthmatic, I had the fear of the altitude and difficulty breathing. I trained fairly consistently about eight to ten times a week and focused on the suggested training regime and my own exercise program. I was surprised that physically, the climb was challenging, but not hard. The more difficult part for me was overcoming the mental challenges.
What’s next? Stee: I am still on my journey of reconciling with my past and understanding the internal changes this has caused. All good by the way! I want to use this experience and my story to somehow help people. What this looks like I am not quite sure yet, but I do know spreading a message about kindness, compassion, understanding, and empathy for others is important to me. I’m excited to see what develops as a result of this film and how I can be a part of the larger discussion about diversity. And on a side note: I have three peaks on my list to climb next season. Needless to say mountaineering is my new hobby. The Walters Cultural Arts Center is seeking artists and artisans to feature in their December Artisan Pop-up Shop. The Pop-up Shop provides a space for artists to sell small work, including ceramics, jewelry, found object art, toys, prints and reproductions, woodworking, glass items, handmade soaps and candles, culinary creations, and more. Call to Artists for the “Picture Hillsboro” Purchase The City of Hillsboro is seeking submissions of two-dimensional works of art to become part of Hillsboro’s Public Art Collection. Limited edition archival reproductions of the original will be presented as gifts to dignitaries visiting Hillsboro and during the official City trips throughout the world. Designating artwork as an official gift emphasizes Hillsboro’s pride in its creative community.
Autumn Hints, Harley Talkington 2019 Purchase
Existing two-dimensional, original artwork is eligible for submission. The artwork should represent the characteristic landscape, city views, people, and/or places of Hillsboro. The purchase price cannot exceed $750. Finalists will be selected for an exhibition in the Civic Center auditorium where the City Council meets. Arts Month Family Fun On October 5, start your Saturday with a walk through Orenco Woods Nature Park and take time for a game of hide and seek in the colossal stickwork sculpture, Head Over Heels (above right), the number one selfie spot in Hillsboro and a great backdrop for a creative family portrait. Enjoy the fall weather with a picnic in the park, or head downtown for wood-fired pizzas at Pizzario before catching La Boheme at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. A production of Portland Opera To Go, this fun, all-ages staging features a shortened version of the classic opera entertaining for younger audiences. Cap off your outing with a shared chocolate fondue or handmade treat from Study of Sweets on 2nd Street. On Sunday, bring the family to enjoy live music and a delicious brunch from market vendors at the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market at Orenco. Once you’ve fueled up, your crew will be ready to head down to the studio for a ceramics class—everyone can make their own ceramic cup, plate, and bowl (for ages 8+) with Jenny Champlin at Sequoia Gallery + Studios (above center, sign up in advance.
Arts Fun for 18 and up On October 19 and 20, over fifty local artists open the doors to their private studios during the Washington County Open Studios Tour, including fourteen artists and two galleries in
Hillsboro. The event is free, and a great way to be inspired, learn about the art-making process, and find unique pieces of art for your home or gifts. Make plans to visit studios on Saturday, then enjoy award-winning Japanese food at Syun or South Indian wine and curries at Virundhu. After dinner, head down Main Street to catch Bag&Baggage Production’s October play, A Clockwork Orange. On Sunday, visit a few more studios, then put what you learned in the studios to use by trying a wine and paint class at Clark’s Bistro and Pub or Oak Knoll Winery.
Weeknight Creative Experiences If you can’t wait until the weekend for a night of creative fun, join us for ArtFest on October 1 from 5 to 8 pm. Part of First Tuesday at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, the evening features live music, food trucks, and new art exhibits, along with special performances on the stage and handson activities. Then head downtown to visit other Hillsboro locations featuring work by local artists, live music, and more. For another Tuesday break, stop by for a drink and appetizers at Primrose and Tumbleweeds in downtown Hillsboro before heading next door to Lines Studio for a drop-in Salsa dance class. Elemental Sequence dedicated in AmberGlen Park
The New Vision Dance Company performs in front of “Elemental Sequence” at the dedication ceremony.
Sky blue scarves traced arcs in the air as the graceful dancers of New Vision Dance Company inaugurated the sculpture, Elemental Sequence, by Dann Nardi. With an original dance choreographed specifically for the artwork, the dancers flowed around and through the sculpture, using their movements to complement the varied spaces of the sculpture and bring the artwork to life. Integrating the element of dance created a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the sculpture and created a truly memorable experience for the crowd gathered for the dedication of the new artwork in AmberGlen Park (20025 NE Gibbs Drive, Hillsboro). Mayor Steve Callaway thanked the youth dancers for their artistry, and thanked the children present as the future of the city.

Dave Miletich, Director of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, praised Nardi as a “man for all seasons,” determinedly building his sculpture through unseasonable heat waves and thunderstorms, and even a flood caused by a broken irrigation line. Miletich highlighted the importance of bringing the vitality of arts and culture to all parts of the city, including this new and growing neighborhood on the city’s eastern edge. Artist Dann Nardi has over fifteen public art pieces spread throughout the country. He said that Elemental Sequence was a once in a lifetime opportunity for an artist to have a true collaboration with the places and the people he encounters. He hoped that the artwork would feel a part of Hillsboro and be enjoyed for years to come. Elemental Sequence is a new landmark in the city’s landscape, one that creates a moment of contemplation and inspires an appreciation for the ever changing light and shadows of our landscape.

Flex your Clay-tivity with independent studio time! A time to work independently on projects in the clay studio and wheel room with the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance. Meet new people, explore new skills, and pursue your individual interests with this self-guided time in the studio. The Walters Cultural Arts Center provides this opportunity for ceramic students to independently practice techniques learned in previous classes. Updated Guidelines Note: Youth under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult enrolled in the same Open Studio session. Open Studio is open to students who have completed two Walters Ceramic classes, are proficient in the subject they are signing up for (handbuilidng or wheel), and have the skills and experience to work independently, including safe use and handling of equipment and tools. What Does Art Mean to Hillsboro? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.
Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council
The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. In 2012, the HACC established the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation to create long-term stable funding for our creative community.
Hillsboro Public Art Program
Public art is a part of our mental map of Hillsboro, creating the memorable public places that strengthen our community. Art can attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, remind us of our history, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity. Public art can take many forms - landscape treatments, building facades, freestanding sculptures, murals, lighting and more. It can be permanent or temporary. Often, art is an unexpected discovery that lifts us out of the ordinary and brings a moment of intrigue and delight to our day.
