ART AND NATURE TOGETHER AT ORENCO Have you experienced the wave of well-being that flows over you when you are outdoors in nature? Stress falls away as you breathe fragrant air and become more attuned the environment around you. Nature parks provide that valuable place to connect to nature close to home. The Orenco Woods Nature Park will provide this connection to Hillsboro residents. Each aspect of the park is being developed to strengthen that link to the natural world, including in the public art pieces that will be placed there. Originally the Orenco Woods Golf Course, this 42-acre wooded region was slated to be developed into over 250 homes. Neighbors appealed the change of zoning from open space to housing, creating an opening for the City of Hillsboro and Metro regional government to purchase the property in 2011 and save it for much needed parkland. As Orenco has rocketed from a rustic small town to a sophisticated, urban, transit-oriented development, the increased density makes the Orenco Woods Nature Park an even more precious resource. Just a short walk from the MAX train, the park will be an oasis of calm in the bucolic Old Orenco neighborhood next to Orenco Elementary School. The nature park will feature a network of trails through woodlands and meadows; environmental stations for outdoor education; wildlife viewing; picnic and nature play areas; and a section of the Rock Creek Trail for biking 2
and walking. Extensive habitat restoration will reforest the creek corridor, enhance wetlands, and create oak savannah habitat in the former fairways of the golf course. As the park master plan was being developed, artists from the group rhiza a+d were part of the landscape architects’ team. They envisioned incorporating artwork that would recall the illustrious history of the Orenco Nursery Company that shipped plants all around the country and to Europe in the beginning of the 20th century. One of the nursery’s signature fruits was the Orenco Apple, a variety that is still grown today. The artists designed a fanciful shelter in the form of the apple to provide a perfect place to take in the views and recall the expansive nursery that was an economic giant a hundred years ago. The focus on nature will be evident throughout the park. The children’s play area is designed with an emphasis on “nature play.” Nature play areas incorporate elements from the surrounding landscape to encourage imaginative play and interactive connections to nature – think of playing with pebbles in a creek, scampering over logs and boulders or building a shelter from branches. Nature play helps develop skills of observation and ingenuity, encouraging kids and parents to play together. A perfect match for the concept of nature play will be the artwork that renowned artist Patrick Dougherty will create

WOODS NATURE PARK specifically for the nature park. Dougherty creates distinctive structures woven from local saplings and has created hundreds of site specific artworks around the world. Flexible willow and maple branches are gathered by the truckload and Dougherty guides legions of volunteers to help shape the “stickwork” structure. Dougherty’s artworks often look like nests, vessels or off-kilter playhouses woven by a nimble fingered giant. Anyone who encounters one of these creations in the woods usually experiences a rapid succession of disbelief, curiosity, delight, and awe. It is a construction zone, closed while habitat restoration work is underway and will open this winter or spring. Artist Patrick Dougherty came to Hillsboro in July to tour the park under construction, look for plant materials for his upcoming project and meet local residents. Studying the rolling terrain and groupings of trees, he found excellent locations to build an artwork that will intertwine with the natural environment to create a magical experience in the woods. Many volunteers are needed in March and April of 2017 to harvest sticks and help build the artwork. The opportunity to work with this exemplary artist is the experience of a lifetime. An Unforgettable Evening of Music & Culture Correo Aereo’s performances around the globe have received glowing acclaim, calling attention to their authenticity, stunning musicianship, and capacity to create new musical expressions from Latin styles, infused with modern trends. The warmth of their approach and diversity of their repertoire draws fans to their unforgettable live performances which the Austin Chronicle calls, “positively bewitching.” In this interview with Walters staff member Gayle Ritt, Abel and Madeline reveal what drives their commitment to their music and passionate approach to live performance. Where does your musical inspiration come from?

Abel: Growing up in Mexico City in the 70s I was exposed to many incredible musicians from all over Latin America. Also music is in my family and my father and uncle always played and started me singing when I was five. Madeleine: My first love, classical violin, lead me to discover music from all over the world. My own mixed blood of French, Russian, Spanish Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jewish, and a little bit of Roma Gypsy, and my own people’s diaspora, influence the way I feel the music. How would you describe your passion for Latin American Music?
Instruments of Correo Aereo Abel sings and plays harp, guitar, and cuatro. Madeleine sings and plays violin, maracas, bombo and jarana. Here’s a bit about these unique instruments you will see in the performance: Cuatro: The Cuatro is any of several Latin American instruments in the guitar or lute families. The Venezuelan version resembles small guitar, but in Puerto Rico the shape is closer a violin. Cuatro means four in Spanish, although current instruments may have more than four strings. Bombo: The Bombo Criollo is a drum made of wood or steel. This Latin American group of drums has its origins in the European bass drum. In Argentina and Cuba it’s referred to as the Bombo Legüero, and the Bombo de Comparsa. Jarana: Also known as Jarana Huasteca, this stringed instrument resembling a guitar originated in southern Coastal Veracruz. In most cases it is made of 4 – 5 nylon strings, and has a deep body structure.

Abel: In this vast and old tradition there are many characters. More than the skill or talent, it’s my passion that has allowed me to embody these characters that are singing in the music from Venezuela, Argentina, and Mexico. Madeleine: [Making music] is a radical act that brings together, nurtures, and strengthens both community and individual. Since our music is a product of colonization, our music and stories help de-colonize heart and mind. You perform both traditional and original music. When composing your own songs, what is your process? Abel: It used to be more a process of looking at external sources, in nature and all art forms and particularly the folk music. Now it’s more a process of internal observation of my own feelings and reflections….Also now that I’ve lived so long in the folk forms, I am also playing with different chordal ideas and allowing myself liberties to flow in and out of the traditional forms in an organic way. How would you define success as a performing artist? Madeleine: To touch people deeply. To have what is needed to keep living, keep creating and playing. To love what you do and be immersed in it.

Tony Starlight Celebrates the Arts in Hillsboro There was a time when no self-respecting fashion-conscious midcentury man strode onstage without a wide lapel and wider collar. Audience members might be forgiven for feeling they’ve been transported to that era when Tony Starlight croons Sinatra and banters with the crowd. Audiences invariably sing along with their favorite tunes and Tony plays up his signature campy humor. If you haven’t seen a Tony Starlight show in Portland, you’re in for a treat. Tony is bringing his show to Hillsboro for one night only as a special concert benefiting the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment. Tony’s shows celebrate the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, the 1970s, and more. San Francisco 1906: Destruction of the Greatest City in the West by Earthquake and Fire with Sig Unander
Tuesday, October 18 | 7 pm Walters Theatre In 1906, San Francisco was the leading city in the Western United States. Prosperous from the Gold Rush days, it was famed for opulent theaters and hotels, majestic skyscrapers, picturesque parks, a vibrant Chinatown, and notorious brothel districts. All of that changed at 5:12 AM on April 18, 1906 when a magnitude 8 earthquake struck without warning. Author and speaker Sig Unander tells the true story of the only major American city ever destroyed by earthquake and fire and the fight to save it. The presentation is illustrated with dramatic archival images of the city and its people taken by photographers during and after the event.

Seven Ways to Enjoy Hillsboro Arts Month The predicted La Niña may mean a cooler rainy fall season, but Hillsboro Arts Month will still bring many reasons to get out this October. For the second year the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council is inviting people to explore Hillsboro’s creative side by taking in a play, concert, book discussion group, art class, or artist’s studio tour. “I think people are surprised when I tell them how many cultural events are happening in the City each month,” said HACC Chair Christine Martell. October in particular, as National Arts & Humanities Month, offers some unique events that only happen once a year. Here’s a list of seven things to do during Hillsboro Arts Month. 1. Go to a show: We’re fortunate to have options for live theater in Hillsboro. From Bag and Baggage’s professional crew to HART’s amazing community theater to STAGES Performing Arts Youth Theater’s productions for kids, there is something for all audiences. These three groups alone are offering 6 different live productions in the month of October. (See the Calendar Listings on Page 13-15 for details.) 2. Watch an artist work: Experience the creative process at work during two visual arts events this October. At the beginning of the month, artists from throughout the region will come to Hillsboro for a timed, outdoor painting competition, Plein Air @ Washington County. And on October 15 and 16, you can visit artists in their studios during the Washington County Open Studios Tour. The tour includes six Hillsboro artists and is a great way to see art demonstrations, talk with local artists about their work, and, of course, buy local artwork. 3. Enjoy live music: October concertgoers can choose from Rock Violinist Aaron Meyer; the Grammy awardwinning musicians of Acoustic Guitar Summit; singersongwriter Carrie Newcomer; and Portland sensation Tony Starlight—or see them all! (See calendar on page 13-15 for details.) Music lovers might also enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants in town that feature live music, including: Clark’s Bistro & Pub, Pizzario, and Primrose & Tumbleweeds in downtown Hillsboro as well as the Orenco Station Grill and Coyote’s Bar & Grill. 4. Get in touch with the past: The Hillsboro Historical Society offers one of the most unique events of the year in the Time Travelers’ Ball and Lyceum 12
on October 8. The lyceum is an afternoon full of historically themed demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on learning experiences for the whole family; and the Time Travelers’ Ball invites guests to don costumes from any era in history, or even from the future, to dance to music from a variety of periods. The historically-minded might also enjoy one of the lectures or after-hours events hosted by the Washington County Museum. 5. Celebrate culture: Stop by M&M Marketplace to celebrate Dia de los muertos this year with festive food, face painting, and a celebration for the fall season. Dia de los muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican Holiday celebrating the memory of dead family and friends with food and festival. 6. Take a class: Attending one of the Arts Month events may inspire you to unleash your own creativity. Explore a new medium or perfect your skills with one of the many classes for children and adults. Instructor Spotlight
Meet Edyta Salak Edyta Salak started her professional art career over 38 years ago, developing original textile designs for a major womenswear company in California—an opportunity which launched what would turn out to be a long and busy freelance career. Salak sold her designs to architectural firms, clothing manufacturers, interior design companies, and even ran a small floral arranging business at one time. “I don’t know where all that energy came from!” she says. “Eventually art takes hold of you and before you know it you’re in for the ride of your life.” Salak shifted gears when she was invited to teach her craft at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. “I learned that not only did I love creating art but teaching it was equally invigorating,” Salak says. “The two things I enjoy most about teaching are the giving and the receiving. I can only pass along what has been so graciously gifted to me over the years. Sharing my experience has been a joy. There is nothing as delightful as seeing someone grasp a new technique or overcome the fear of creating. I’ve seen students fall in love with their own work and that’s amazing! I too get back so much. I have had students challenge me in the most invigorating ways.” When Salak moved to Oregon she planned to lay teaching aside for a while in order to delve more fully into her own artistic projects, including her “Modern Moods” collection which was selected for an exhibit in the Walters 2014-2015 gallery season. Salak’s robust experience and natural teaching abilities were a perfect fit for the Walters adult arts education program—and as the saying goes once a teacher, always a teacher. “The Walters gave me back the gift of teaching,” she says. “I am now doing both [teaching and painting] and loving it more than ever.”

Returning HACC workshop instructor Ash Shepherd is no stranger to the Hillsboro community. As the Education Director for NTEN and a frequent presenter for Online Marketing-based workshops, Ash has enjoyed working with the nonprofit sector for over two decades. He has an affinity for systems thinking, strategy, and playing the role of “interpreter” while helping organizations connect with new ideas. As a social media expert, Ash aims to teach nonprofits about how internet marketing and a strategic social media plan can provide amazing opportunities to engage your community. In particular, arts and culture organizations can take advantage of the multimedia aspect of these communication channels with new concepts such as timelapse videos, GIF images, photo collages, and more. The key is to create opportunities for real engagement and shared ownership with your community with an effective strategy, not just broadcast via these new channels. This fall, the HACC and Ash Shepherd offer a two-part workshop that will focus on developing a multi-channel strategy for digital communications in your arts organization. Come for one, come for both – each session will provide new content and opportunities to put strategy into practice and receive feedback. Whether your organization is already using social media tools or just getting started, pick up pointers that will improve your effectiveness and yield results. Making a Difference in Hillsboro’s Art Scene A Conversation with Dawn Sellers
As the applications for joining the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) open, Community Arts Program Supervisor Melissa Moore sat down to talk with Dawn Sellers, the current Vice Chair and incoming chair of the HACC. Dawn and her husband Doug have lived and worked in Hillsboro for the past 13 years, including owning Sellers Antiques and the wine bar Primrose & Tumbleweeds. Why did you join the HACC? Doug and I are both committed to encouraging the growth of arts and culture in Hillsboro because we understand how it affects the economic viability of the City—and we just love the arts. What other organizations or groups have you been involved with? Well, I’ve been involved with a number of groups in different ways. I was on the board of the Downtown Business Association and I administer the Downtown Hillsboro community Facebook page. I volunteered with HART Theater, Sequoia Gallery + Studios, and worked with both Creative Hillsboro and the Northwest Independent Writers Association to provide them space when they started up. What has been the most rewarding element of working with the HACC? Just getting to know everyone who loves and is involved with the arts. It’s also very rewarding to see projects come to fruition—like the Public Art opening at Shute Library. And, I love watching the organizations in our community grow, and knowing we were a part of it. As the community has grown, the arts have grown along with it, and the arts have been a big part of that growth. People now refer to downtown as an arts district—with Sequoia Gallery, with HART Theater, the Washington County Museum, and now Bag&Baggage getting their own space. Seeing the community embrace the arts— by attending events, donating money—the community seems to be making art a priority—just like the city has. What would you tell someone moving to Hillsboro about our Arts Community? There’s a lot of talent here and many ways to get involved. No matter what your interest is, there’s something for you—as an artist, patron, or volunteer behind the scenes. Who do we need on the HACC? A good mix of artists, business minded people, and community volunteers. We need a balance—both artists and people who just want to see the arts grow. It’s helpful to have people with a variety of backgrounds and experience to bring to the table. Any advice for someone thinking of applying to join the HACC? Absolutely. I’d tell them to come to a meeting, or event, like the benefit concert, talk to current HACC members—everyone is very open to talking, and just know that it is a fun and meaningful experience.
Meet Our 2016 Summer Intern:
Alicia de Jesus Hernandez Alicia de Jesus Hernandez is a Political Science & Public Health Major at Pacific University and the recipient of the prestigious Alexander Hamilton Citizenship Award for community service achievement. This summer Alicia joined the Walters team through the City of Hillsboro Internship Program, assisting teachers with their summer art camps, and taking photos of our classes and events. We are thrilled to share a few insights from this bright and inspiring member of our community in this brief interview: What have you enjoyed most about your time at the Walters? I truly enjoyed every part of my internship—from assisting the teachers during the clay camps to spending my days photographing and editing. The kids really inspired me to turn imagination into reality using art. I also loved utilizing my artistic knowledge, such as composition, when taking photos and fixing the lighting using Photoshop. It was a balance of all three aspects of my internship that I found truly satisfying. What are your plans for the future? This fall, I plan to return to my studies at Pacific University and reintegrate myself with the arts on an academic level….This internship really made me reflect on the great potential I have to expand my artistic abilities and ways I can contribute my skills to my community in the future. I am excited to take on Choir, Music Nation, digital imaging and, in the Spring, a course on photography and stained glass. As a current Public Health major, I am excited to see the ways in which public health and the arts come together to make a positive impact in Hillsboro. Do you have any advice to local students looking to get more involved in the community? Do not be afraid of pursuing the things that truly interest you. Find volunteering opportunities that relate to things that you really enjoy doing….Once you find something that really suits you, narrow your focus to one particular club, but be open-minded to other opportunities. If you give it your all—your time, energy and talent—you will become the greatest in that particular field of interest…and you will eventually find people that truly see potential in the work that you do are more like likely to offer you greater opportunities or get you connected to others. It is in the small things that you do in the community that will make an impact in the community.

What Does Art Mean to Hillsboro? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.
Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council
The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. In 2012, the HACC established the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation to create long-term stable funding for our creative community.
Hillsboro Public Art Program
Public art is a part of our mental map of Hillsboro, creating the memorable public places that strengthen our community. Art can attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, remind us of our history, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity. Public art can take many forms - landscape treatments, building facades, freestanding sculptures, murals, lighting and more. It can be permanent or temporary. Often, art is an unexpected discovery that lifts us out of the ordinary and brings a moment of intrigue and delight to our day.
