Kids Spend the Summer Getting “Muddy” in Clay Mini-Camps Do you have a creative kid who loves to build, play and get their hands muddy? Then a Clay Mini-Camp at the Walters Cultural Arts Center (527 East Main Street, Hillsboro, OR) might be the perfect choice to keep your child active and their imagination engaged this summer. Working with clay provides kids with the opportunity to sculpt, shape, twist, coil and create to their hearts’ content. Imagination has no limits and there are no mistakes in these Clay Mini-Camps. Just plenty of opportunities to make new discoveries and develop new creative skills—and if they don’t like the results, they can just smash it down and start again! According to Walters’ Clay Instructor, Alice Hill, kids have the innate ability to “just enjoy their art and approach everything from such a pure place of imagination.” The medium of clay is the perfect way to set their imaginations free as it gives them the flexibility to shape the clay into anything—from an amazing mask to a magical creature of their own creation. Children ages 5 – 8 years start by hand building sculptures and usable art, all while learning the building blocks of ceramics. From pinch pots to ceramic tiles to amazing animals, kids have the opportunity to create a variety of projects while

also learning the skills to add texture, shape and color to their creations. Older kids, from 9 – 13 years, can not only gain the skills to create their own sculptures and hand built creations, but they also have the opportunity to discover the excitement of the potter’s wheel. Great for building hand-eye coordination, creativity and concentration, the potter’s wheel allows kids to learn new techniques for creating their own cups, plates, vases and other clay pieces on the wheel. These new techniques help them to take their clay creations to the next level and discover amazing new ways to shape clay. According to Walters’ Clay Instructor Shannon Johnson, her favorite days are those when she gets to share in the personal revelations of her students: “It’s inspiring when they see themselves in a way they never did before, when they discover an idea in a piece of art that they are just discovering for the first time.” Be sure to sign your child up early for one of the Clay Mini-Camps at the Walters…these minicamps fill up quickly! To learn more about Clay Mini-Camps and other art opportunities for your child this summer, visit Hillsboro-Oregon. gov/WaltersClasses. Registration for Clay Mini Camps opens on April 24.
