Director’s Message

Director’s Message We are excited to share with you some additions coming to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation! Right now construction of a new splash pad and playground is underway at Walnut Street Park. The splash pad will be located next to the existing gazebo and will be a wonderful addition to this neighborhood park. The project will be completed in the fall. The Rock Creek Trail is getting a bit of attention with two construction projects. The trail is currently being extended from Orchard Park south to NW Wilkins Street, a distance of about two-thirds of a mile. We are also partnering with ODOT and Washington County to install a fully signalized crosswalk on Evergreen Parkway at the trail to provide a safer, more convenient bicycle and pedestrian crossing for trail users. The Orenco Woods Nature Park site is shaping up nicely. In partnership with Metro and the Trust for Public Land, a 42 acre parcel was purchased in December 2011 and added to an adjacent property already owned by the City. With the land acquired, we are about to undergo the master planning process for the new park, which will include opportunities for public input. We want to keep you informed and involved. Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, join our eNewsletter list, visit our website, or give us a call. All of these are great ways for you to learn more about our park projects and how we’re constantly working to make Hillsboro a better place to live, work and play.

Steve Greagor, Director

Let’s Play Ball – Baseball is Coming to Hillsboro! On June 26, Hillsboro City Council approved an agreement with Short Season, LLC, the owners of the Yakima Bears, to bring short-season Single A baseball to Hillsboro by June 2013. Since that momentous occasion a lot of work has been done to prepare for the team’s arrival. Hoffman Construction/SRG Partners were hired as the design build team for a new 4,500 capacity baseball stadium at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex on NW 229th Avenue. The stadium is expected to draw a total of between 100,000 and 180,000 fans each season, but the stadium is also being designed for year-round community use. The ball park will feature artificial turf that is marked for lacrosse, soccer and football, in addition to baseball. It is expected that the facility will be used by the school district, expanded adult soccer leagues, new league sports, athletic tournaments and special events. Construction will begin in the early fall and will be completed in time for the Hillsboro’s future hometown team to throw out the first pitch next June. Construction updates will be posted regularly at www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/parksrec and at www.facebook.com/Hillsboroparks. See you at the ball park! Jeff Jurrens

Kim Lakin

August 7 – September 25 Main Gallery

Jeff Jurrens and Kim Lakin explore abstraction in their work. Jurrens’ abstract expressionist paintings are large, colorful and rich, with a depth of texture formed by his liberal use of squeegee-applied paint. His new work incorporates geometric shapes—which are, coincidentally, similar to forms found in Kim Lakin’s fiber art. Though Lakin assembles her work using quilting techniques, the end results bear more in common with minimalist painting than with your grandmother’s quilts. Sculptor Bradley McLemore creates functional ceramic objects and sculptural forms abstracted from mechanical devices. These sculptures hint at, yet never fully explain, their possible utility.

Tom Jacquemin, Sandra Pearce In the lower exhibition space

Photographer Tom Jacquemin and watercolor painter Sandra Pearce both focus on landscapes as a vehicle to celebrate light and color.

First Tuesday Opening Reception

September 4 6:00 – 8:00 pm An opening reception in the lobby honoring all September artists featuring a house concert with Rio Con Brio will include refreshments from Claeys Catering. Bradley McLemore

Conot scans objects including dried leaves, roots and tubers, creating portrait images, in vivid detail, of often overlooked organic objects. Jacobson captures heroic images of landscapes that almost read as abstract or color field paintings.

Dell Nelson

Full Nelson: A Family Affair with Art December 4 – January 29

Dell Nelson, Larry Nelson, Debra Nelson, Loren Nelson and Christopher Nelson It’s a family affair this holiday season with three generations of Nelsons in the gallery. Larry Nelson exhibited in Questioning Functionality 2 and 3 with his fantastic trompe l’oeil ceramics that look like miniature metal boilers and piping. In reality his work is all functional ceramic tea pots and cups. Upon learning that many members of Larry’s family are accomplished artists, we simply had to have them all on display. Larry’s father, Dell, draws immaculate renderings of crumbling buildings in charcoal. Debra Nelson is a ceramicist who creates lamps inspired by organic forms. Brother Loren Nelson is a photographer who captures details of flora often overlooked. The youngest member of this family exhibition is Christopher Nelson whose whimsical works include a little social criticism. The Nelsons are featured throughout the building.

HACC Professional Development Workshop Series Fundraising Strategies: Attracting Corporate Turning Your Strategic Plan into an Support to Advance Your Mission Action Plan

Adult

Adult

Tired of investing time and money in strategic planning processes that lead nowhere? Be the champion in your organization for turning your strategic plan into an action plan, and making strategic planning an enjoyable, instead of a dreaded, process.

You only get one chance to make a great impression, particularly with corporations, and time is money. Support from corporations has been shrinking over the last several years and is extremely competitive, whether it comes from their philanthropic or marketing budgets. During this workshop we arm you to make a difference in your organization’s fundraising efforts, particularly in corporate giving. Come prepared to learn about: the main avenues for fundraising, fundraising trends and strategies, and the finer details of securing corporate and business sponsorships for your organization. All levels of experience are welcome.

Strategic planning has the ability to reinvigorate—or in some cases, reinvent—an organization. This fast-paced workshop covers the basics of strategic planning, including best practices and ways to create opportunities for board, staff, and other stakeholders to participate in the process to help ensure your goals are implemented. Discuss tried and true tips to prevent your plan from collecting dust on a shelf and send you away with the tools you need to get started (or generate new momentum for a waning process). Kathy Kniep #35565: Day: Time: Fee:

10/11 Thursday 4:00 – 6:00 pm $25.00

Participants should bring: an understanding of your organization’s history with corporate giving over the last two years, a list of benefits your organization provides for corporate gifts, your organization’s overall development goals & budget and your organization’s operating budget. Charles Frasier #35566: Day: Time: Fee:

What role do prisons serve in our country? Is it possible to envision a world where people are safe and secure, and where there is accountability, without prisons? Does our prison system, in some cases, actually cause rather than reduce crime? Independent scholar and writer Walidah Imarisha addresses these questions and more. This program is part of Oregon Humanities’ statewide Conversation Project, which engages community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state’s future.

Mexico’s Aztec Eagles: Hispanic Heroes of World War II with Sig Unander November 20, 7:00 pm, Free

Local historian and journalist Sig Unander presents the film The Forgotten Eagles, which tells the story of the legendary Aztec Eagle fighter pilots, the only Mexican military unit to serve in WWII combat outside of Mexico. This elite unit of volunteer aviators and support personnel helped American forces drive the Japanese from the Philippines during World War II. The Eagles’ exploits were largely forgotten after the war and are just now being recognized again. Mr. Unander will follow the film showing with a Q&A session.

Weird Oregon with Jeff Davis October 16, 7:00 pm, Free

Did you know that weird and weirder places exist all over Oregon? Take the whimsical places for children, like the Enchanted Forest near Salem, or the Dinosaur Park along the coast. How about the places with a darker past, where religious cults held sway—not to mention roadside attractions, natural wonders and haunted hotels and caves. Come share in Oregon weirdness with Jeff Davis, co-author of “Weird Oregon,” as he walks you through the wonders of our weird state.

The Orpheus Curse: Looking Back at a Mythical Taboo with Curtis Yehnert

December 18, 7:00 pm, Free One of the most fascinating taboos in mythology involves the prohibition against looking back: at the risk of turning into a pillar of salt, like Lot, or at the risk of losing one’s beloved, as happened to Orpheus in the underworld. Native Americans have their share of “don’t look back” mythology, as well. What does it mean that so many cultures have stories of this taboo, and that this taboo is so often broken? Mythology scholar Curtis Yehnert will reflect on the similarities and differences among these myths, and explore what the forbidden desire to look back may reveal about human nature.
