Director’s Message

Director’s Message Days are getting shorter, school supplies are lining

the aisles of stores and that can only mean one thing -- school is back in session and Hillsboro Parks &

Recreation has just the activity you are looking for! The

Fall 2013 Activities Guide has something for everyone. Whether you are still in school or graduated 30 years

ago, you are never too old to sign-up for a class, activity or program.

For the littlest members of the family we have the Busy Bees Activity Program for children 3 – 5 years at Tyson Recreation Center. Busy Bees follows a structured schedule teaching children important

skills through play-based activities. This instills good behavior habits and knowledge of art, science and sensory understanding.

For the elementary aged members of your household BLAST (Bringing Leadership, Arts & Sports

Together) is the program for them. This program provides a safe, fun place for kids in grades 1-6 to go five days a week after school until 5 pm.

We haven’t forgotten about the middle schoolers either. The Zone is an after school program offered

exclusively for middle school students. Sessions are four days a week for eight weeks all school-year and alternate between enrichment and sports themes each session, but always include homework help.

For the “older” student, you may want to check out a dance or fitness class, or maybe art is more to your liking. The Fall 2013 Activities Guide has dozens of programs from which to choose, including brand new this fall, an adult kickball league!

Or maybe you love gardening? Another new addition is the David Hill Community Garden located on the SE corner of Miller Education Center West. This site is the first community garden partnership

between Hillsboro Parks & Recreation and the Hillsboro School District, and is the fourth site in the

department’s Community Garden Program. Construction began in late June and the site is expected to open in early fall with 49 plots available.

Whatever your age, whatever your interest – Hillsboro Parks & Recreation has something for everyone.

Hello Neighbor and Pamela Brown Wilkinson – Photography August 6 – September 24

Photography continues in its second month. Explore your world and community through a new set of eyes this summer at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Photographer–and Portland’s first Creative Laureate–Julie Keefe designed her project, “Hello Neighbor,” to introduce South Meadows Middle School students to their community by interviewing and photographing people they admire. In turn, Keefe creates portraits of the students. The portraits challenge us to appreciate the rich stories behind the faces of our neighbors. Hillsboro-based photographer Pamela Brown Wilkinson has devoted a major portion of her life to capturing images from nature that are both beautiful and fascinating. As an artist she’s drawn to landscapes and compositions that inspire reflection, wonder and even laughter.

Shute Park

799 SE 10th Avenue

• 13 Acres • Picnic shelters/picnic areas • Playground featuring Mud Puddle Rock water/sand play • Grassy area for recreation • Performance Platform/Stage • Restrooms • .73 Miles walking pathways • Expanded off-street parking

In addition to being Hillsboro’s oldest park, Shute Park is also its most well-known and heavily used. Opened in 1906 and named for J. W. Shute, it has been the home of numerous community events such as the Washington County Fair and Hillsboro’s Independence Day celebrations. Today, the park hosts events such as the Outpost and the Showtime at Shute Summer Concert Series. The park complex includes the Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC), which occupies the same space where the original outdoor pool was installed in 1951, the Hillsboro Community Senior Center, the Shute Park Branch Library (currently under renovation–due to reopen in March 2014), the A& W Burger Family (designated a cultural resource remembering the 1960s drive-in food culture), and Hillsboro’s only pickleball court. The park currently features group picnic areas, two shelters, play equipment featuring the new “Mud Puddle Rock” water/sand play area, horseshoe pitches, a fire pit, walkways, and a performance platform/stage. Shute Park has two picnic shelters and three picnic areas that are available for rental as is the performance platform/stage.
