Director’s Message
Director’s Message A year ago we completed an Indoor Recreation Facilities Master Plan to guide recreation facility development in Hillsboro over the next 20 years. The Master Plan clearly shows that Hillsboro currently has a shortage of indoor recreation facilities and sets a path to meet the community’s needs. The plan recommends two new large multipurpose facilities, a smaller specialized one, and various degrees of modifications to existing facilities in order to support our growing community.
Last spring, the Parks & Recreation Commission adopted the Indoor Facilities Master Plan, and City Council made the development of a new community recreation center a priority for fiscal year 2013 – 2014. Parks & Recreation staff has begun implementing this concept by initiating the pre-design phase for a community recreation center to be located on the west side of 53rd Avenue Park. There will be four outcomes of this pre-design phase: a recommended concept design, a project cost estimate, an operational business plan and, if necessary, a construction strategy, all of which will be presented to the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Commission and City Council in Spring 2014. Ultimately, our goal is to create a premier community recreation center that sets the standard both locally and regionally for efficiency, functionality and sustainability, while also offering recreational services accessible to everyone in Hillsboro. To help us with the pre-design phase, a citizen advisory committee has been formed to provide feedback on potential design and program elements of the park and the community recreation center. The committee’s input is critical to understanding the needs of our community and will weigh heavily on the final plans for the facility.
We want your input as well. Three community Open Houses will be held during the pre-design phase, where the public is invited to learn about the project and share thoughts and ideas. The first Open House is scheduled for December 5 in the Main Library Event Room located at 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway. The other Open Houses are tentatively scheduled for January 16 and February 13. Visit our website at www. hillsboro-oregon.gov/ParksRec for more information about this project and to sign up for our newsletter.
I hope you find something of interest to you in this Activities Guide that will bring you enjoyment during this winter season.

New Four-Acre Park Coming in 2014
Hillsboro Parks & Recreation recently acquired four acres on the southwest corner of Cornell and NW 231st Avenue to develop a new park. This site will provide an open green space for those living nearby. The master plan, developed with public input, provides amenities for a variety of park users from tots to seniors. Key features include a looped walking trail, a 1/2 acre fenced off-leash dog area, a small nature play area, a bocce ball court, and an outdoor ping-pong table. These active areas are balanced by an open lawn, ornamental and native plantings, a riparian zone, and planted buffering from the adjacent streets and neighbors. There will be additional local public outreach this year as the design moves forward. Construction is anticipated in summer/fall 2014. 2 Miles of paved trail Pedestrian and bicycle trail Boardwalks and benches Bird watching Scenic natural views Parking & restroom at Orchard Park
A Trail for All Seasons - The Rock Creek Regional Trail offers year-round opportunities for exploring the scenic Rock Creek greenway along its nearly two miles. The paved bike and pedestrian trail connects Rock Creek Blvd north of Hwy 26 south to NW Wilkins Street, linking residential neighborhoods with parks and employment areas. Each segment of the trail has its own character, with views of woodlands, meadows, creek and wetlands. Bridges and boardwalks cross the creek and its floodplain, offering glimpses of resident wildlife, including ducks, great blue herons, songbirds, hawks and the occasional river otter or deer. Benches offer quiet places to pause along the trail. Parking, play and restroom facilities are available at Orchard Park. Scheduled for completion in 2014, trailhead facilities at NW Cherry Lane will provide additional parking, picnic tables, nature-themed play equipment and a portable restroom. Designed for recreation and non-motorized transportation, the trail provides users with a convenient, beautiful avenue of transit through the area. Further segments of the trail are envisioned for development, eventually crossing the entire city and ending at Rood Bridge Park.
