New Artwork for Shute Park The Community Shares Their Thoughts What artwork would make you feel welcome in Shute Park? This is the question that Public Art staff is asking Hillsboro residents to plan for new art that would enhance their experience in the park. What will be the new landmark that identifies Shute Park? Will that artwork be a statue or an experience―an interactive play feature that is a kid magnet or a cool picnic shelter for the family gatherings you will always remember? Latino community leaders were brought into the conversation, many of whom had grown up living and working near the park, celebrating family occasions there or recalling the skating rink that used to be in the park. “That was the place you went to hang out with friends, and especially to meet girls!” recalled Hector Hinojosa with a chuckle. Our community engagement team of Alicia De Jesús Hernández and LeAnn Alsop engaged people at community events, gathering input from over 600 people. The statue of Chief Kno-Tah casts both a shadow and a light on the identity of Shute Park. The statue, carved in 1987 by Peter “Wolf” Toth, was created to honor Native Americans. Last winter, it was hit by a falling tree and was removed. The carving was a landmark along 10th Avenue, prompting generations to call beloved Shute Park “El Parque del Indio” (The Park of the Indian). In the public outreach, many voiced the desire to honor Native American culture, expressing a preference for, “Otra escultura nueva para identificar y no olvidar el parque del “Indio.” (A new sculpture that would identify and not forget the park of the “Indian.”) When thinking about a sculpture that would be a new landmark, people have been creative in their suggestions ―“A landmark that people can drive by and notice,” or “Photo op

(something to make people want to take pics with it,)” or “Deer with Oregon grape flowers (state flower).” People were asked about an artist-designed play structure or a gathering space like a kiosk or pavilion. The option of a play structure elicited comments like, “Play structure for 0-3 yrs. More options for play,” and “I love big sculptures we can play on! Still Native themed.” A gathering space sparked enthusiasm as well. “Having a gathering place would help bring a community together,” “Un Quiosco para fiestas seria una Buena idea (a kiosk for parties would be a good idea) and “Something that plays with light and shadow.” Open ended suggestions were welcomed too, inspiring ideas such as, “Something that echoes,” “I really love the big trees! Don’t cut any down for the new installation,” and “Art along the trails – incentive to explore.”

Now that the responses of others have gotten you thinking, help shape the next art landmark for Shute Park! Add your voice to the conversation by taking the online survey at HillsboroOregon.gov/PublicArt.

When Hillsboro Painted Q&A with Artist-in-Our-Community Dawning McGinnis Experience the love, creativity, and diversity of Hillsboro! “Hillsboro Painted” is a communitygenerated art project shepherded by Dawning McGinnis, Hillsboro’s inaugural Artist-inOur-Community. McGinnis spent the summer engaging hundreds of community members of all Photo by Rick Paulson ages in painting postcards at pop-up painting booths around the city. Each postcard is a visual answer to the question “what do you love about Hillsboro?” and together they make a powerful representation of what this city is all about. This project was funded by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment to bring art to unexpected places and to engage the creativity of our community. As the summer came to a close, McGinnis sat down to talk about the project with our staff. Where did you get the inspiration for your Artist-in-OurCommunity project? When I saw the Artist-in-Our-Community artist call, I thought of creating a community mural. After looking at the project guidelines closely, I got inspired to create a mural out of smaller images so that more of the community could participate. Previously, I had read an article about artists in New York City who were reaching community members who wouldn’t normally have time for community art by bringing art to laundromats. I was completely inspired by this idea and wanted to work that into the project. Have you done anything like this project before? I have a diverse background in studio art, teaching art, and organizing art events. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing artists on their community art projects in both California and Oregon. For this project I was able to combine many of my experiences, which has been endlessly rewarding. What’s surprised you in the process of doing the pop-ups this summer? Did you have a favorite moment? I have been absolutely floored by the enormous amount of wonderful community support of this project. One of my favorite moments has been getting to know a local artist who

was too timid to show her artwork publicly. She has been using this project as a way to allow her art to be seen in a public setting and I am so proud to give her that opportunity. You’ve done pop-up painting booths at a wide range of places—from Sequoia Gallery to the 4th of July Pancake Breakfast to the Boys and Girls Club, and of course, laundromats. Have you found any common themes to the paintings? There are a few Hillsboro and Oregon landmarks that have come up in several paintings, like the Max Bridge, Mount Hood, and the Tualatin River. But mainly I have noticed that participants paint their favorite things in their lives―rock climbing, trees, their pets, and flowers. As you’ve moved from focusing on the pop-up booths inviting public participation to working on your own in your studio, how do you decide what larger images to create from the individual paintings? I have primarily been taking inspiration from the community for the final projects. Trees have been a large theme among the community members’ paintings, so I chose to create a piece that reflects that. I also wanted to continue the theme of interactive art, so I came up with the idea of creating large butterfly wings so that people can take selfies in front of the wings. Hillsboro has been such a wonderful place to visit during my tour, so I took inspiration from the city logo. Additionally, since participants love to use the color blue and the Tualatin River has been a theme in many paintings, I am creating waves to reflect the theme of water. After spending the summer working with hundreds of people across the city, what would you paint to tell a friend about Hillsboro? To show my experience, I would portray the diversity of Hillsboro and the huge number of participants in this project by painting the many hands that I have seen in action this summer. I actually plan to create this painting as a follow up piece!

Saeeda Wright: A Journey to Love Raised in a family of musicians and worship leaders, music was ingrained in this soulful performer at an early age. Saeeda Wright’s passionate performances and magnetic voice draws in those who hear the stories she tells through song. Wright has toured with the legendary pop star Prince and gone on to play with many other acclaimed musicians—including Liz Warfield and the Oregon Symphony—and command stages like Portland’s Annual Blues Festival. Cultural Arts staff spoke with Wright about where she finds the motivation to perform songs that promote messages of love, inspiration and encouragement. How did you get started in music?

“This is feel good music with a message of selflove and acceptance.” —Saeeda Wright

My mother had a beautiful voice in her youth and she loved playing music around the house, so I was surrounded by it. Throughout my schooling I was usually in a choir and eventually decided to take music seriously as a career in high school. I started doing competitions and studio work with my friends and the rest is history. What do you love most about singing and performing? I love the ability to convey a message and tell stories with songs. Touching the heart of my listener is my favorite thing to do...It really is the best job in the world. Where do you find your inspiration as an artist? I find inspiration in prayer and observation of my own life. I am always praying that God grant me wisdom and show me the lesson in the things I go through. That usually leads me to think a lot about my life experiences. I tend to analyze, extract the lessons, and then I sing about them. How did you begin touring with Prince as a member of the New Power Generation? How did that experience influence you as a performer?

New Album in the Works:

Saeeda is currently working on a new album called “A Journey to Love.” She says about the project that “people should expect to be encouraged, inspired and enlightened...I want people to walk away from my project feeling like they can conquer the world.”

I was singing background for Prince’s artist Liv Warfield and he loved our collective sound so when he was launching his Hit and Run 2015 Tour, he asked if I wanted to sing with him, alongside Liv, and I said yes. I learned a lot about how to move about in the industry and also how to maintain solid relationships. We do our best to stick together as family and support one another as Prince commissioned us to do. As a performer, I watched him love on his fans and continuously offer his gift in many ways and I hope to do the same. Saeeda Wright will take the Walters stage, Friday, December 14 for an evening of NeoSoul, R&B, Jazz and Gospel. For more information and tickets visit Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/WaltersConcerts. 7

Thomas Lauderdale, a Northwest Favorite Thomas M. Lauderdale―pianist, songwriter, founder and bandleader of Portland-based “little orchestra” Pink Martini―comes to Hillsboro on Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17. The Walters Cultural Arts Center, a 200-seat theater framed by classic stone architecture and custom woodwork ceiling arches with a grand piano on stage, provides an intimate and dynamic setting for Lauderdale’s solo performances. The first night, November 16, is a benefit concert for Hillsboro Arts & Cultural Endowment, which provides support to arts and culture organizations and artists in Hillsboro and invites us all to look forward, and give back to the arts. Lauderdale began playing piano at the age of six in rural Indiana. In 1982, at the age of twelve, his family moved to Portland and at fourteen, Lauderdale made his first of many appearances with the Oregon Symphony and has since appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Seattle Symphony, Portland Youth Philharmonic, Chamber Music Northwest, and Oregon Ballet Theatre. In 2008, he played Gershwin’s “Piano Concerto in F” with the Oregon Symphony under the direction of Christoph Campestrini and then returned as a soloist in multiple concerts in 2011 and 2015, under the direction of Carlos Kalmar. In 2017, he and his partner Hunter Noack created and performed a dazzling, rhapsodic two-piano arrangement of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with choreographer Nicolo Fonte for Oregon Ballet Theatre.

If you haven’t had a chance to catch him in one of his live performances, you may recognize his music from a television or film soundtrack. In 2016, Lauderdale created the score and three featured songs for the Belgian film Souvenir, starring the legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert. His work has also been featured on many film and television soundtracks that span the genres of dramas, thrillers, comedies, and documentaries. Lauderdale graduated from Portland’s Ulysses Grant High School, where he was student body president and editorial editor of The Grantonian. He attended Harvard, graduating with honors in history and literature in 1992 and went on to serve under Portland Mayor Bud Clark, Oregon Governor Neil Goldschmidt and worked under Commissioner Gretchen Kafoury on the City’s civil rights ordinance.

and a Local Benefit He spent most of his collegiate years, however, in cocktail dresses, taking on the role of “cruise director,” throwing waltzes with live orchestras and ice sculptures, disco masquerades with gigantic pineapples on wheels, midnight swimming parties, and operating a Tuesday night coffeehouse called Café Mardi. Turning away from political office yet remaining politically involved, in 1994 he founded Portland’s Pink Martini to “provide more beautiful inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers, for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education, and parks.” Long-motivated by making music accessible and being politically and socially minded, Lauderdale’s musical performances move freely between genres throughout the centuries and from all over the world. Classical, jazz, and pop fuse and mix freely on the stage, expanding their appeal to an array of audiences. As a listener, Lauderdale invites you in through a known connection and nimbly moves you along to discover something new. It’s a ride worth taking. A Northwest favorite, Thomas Lauderdale was the top choice for the Hillsboro’s Arts & Culture Endowment’s 2018 benefit concert. The Endowment committee was inspired by his dedication to the arts, his ongoing commitment to helping communities, and his infectious enthusiasm for music and performing. Lauderdale’s own background in the arts provides a splendid example of the importance of arts education, how the arts can help us connect to the diverse world we live in, and how supporting arts and culture can make a difference in in the lives of those around us and in our own as well. During the benefit concert, Lauderdale will be joined on the stage by a few special guests. As part of the event, the Arts & Culture Endowment will celebrate five years of growth, awards to artists, arts organizations and this year’s Artist-in-Our-Community grant. 100% of ticket sales on Friday, November 16 will benefit the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment. Premium tickets include a catered preshow reception with an appearance by Thomas Lauderdale and reserved seating in the first five rows. Funded by the community, for the community and in partnership with the City of Hillsboro, the & Culture Endowment is dedicated to creating on-going funding support for arts and culture in Hillsboro. A Story Told One Block at a Time

Washington County Quilt Barn Trail Celebrates Heritage, History, and Community You’ve probably seen them, even if you weren’t looking— maybe glimpsed out of the corner of your eye while cruising down Highway 47, blinks of color rising above summeryellowed fields. Maybe you’ve wondered what they are, where they came from, who made them.

“Hovering Hawks” was quickly followed by a “Grandmother’s Fan” block at the Gates Century Farm in Hillsboro and a variation of a “Log Cabin” block at the Jessie Mays Community Center in North Plains, and the Washington County Quilt Barn Trail was born.

Peppered throughout the farmlands and fields of Washington County you’ll find them: brightly colored square panels painted with geometric patterns, mounted high on the faces and sides of barns and outbuildings. This is the Washington County Quilt Barn Trail: a public art project organized by the Westside Quilters Guild aimed at celebrating the heritage, history, and agriculture of the region, while promoting tourism among visitors and residents alike.

“Quilts are an expression of art, and often an expression of the quilter’s life, their family and farm, and their experiences,” said Fouste. “Each block tells a story.” That story comes sometimes through the history of its pattern, sometimes through its relationship to its hosts or site. A block featuring a complex pattern of rings and sunbursts hangs on the front face of the old horse barn at Blooming Hill Vineyard, greeting visitors as they arrive at Holly and Jim Witte’s homey tasting room.

Julie Mason, a member of Washington County’s Westside Quilters Guild, was traveling through the Midwest when she discovered the region’s quilt blocks—painted square panels inspired by traditional quilting patterns, mounted on the exterior of rural barns. Upon returning home, she felt that Washington County could support a Quilt Barn Trail of its own, showcasing the rich farming heritage of the region and supplementing farm and vineyard tourism in the area through public art. Mason presented the idea to the Quilters Guild in 2012, to strong support.

“We want to promote quilting as art, and the quilt barn trail, really, is public art in unexpected places.” — Jane Fouste, Westside Quilters Guild

“Washington County is a beautiful place, and we knew we had some beautiful barns out there,” said Jane Fouste, a founding member of the Westside Quilters Guild. “We want to promote quilting as art, and the quilt barn trail, really, is public art in unexpected places.” When the Guild presented the idea to the Washington County Board of Commissioners, though, they were greeted with an unexpected response: based on a County sign ordinance, the barn blocks would fall under the established legal definition of signage, and each would be subject to fees and a potentially complicated permitting process. “While the layman might question the definition, and wonder how a patch of colors could be defined as a sign, the law does not allow local governments to distinguish based on content of the message whether in words or pictures,” explains Washington County Chairman Andy Duyck. “After consulting with my colleagues and our legal counsel, an ordinance was submitted and adopted which would specifically exempt the quilt barn trail displays from permit requirements with no reference to the message that they may carry.” The Guild installed their first block on December 5, 2014: a “Hovering Hawks” patterned block installed on the Simpson Century Farm on SW Simpson Rd in Cornelius. The Simpson Family has been on this farm since 1878, and selected the “Hovering Hawks” pattern because it was originally designed by women crossing the country on the Oregon Trail.

“The team came out to visit us and actually recommended the design,” said Holly. “Jim and I got married here in 2006 but we met in New York many years ago…The design is called ‘New York Beauty’ and the color palette matches the colors in the label we use for our wine. To us, it looks like looking down at the top of the Statue of Liberty’s head with the crown!” County Chairman Duyck eventually came to host a quilt block of his own. As you head west down Verboort Road, the block appears, slung low over freshly cut hay fields: a deep red windmill against a bright blue sky. “I felt strongly that I wanted to be a part of the quilt barn trail by displaying a block which would be a landmark as well as a sense of pride for the Verboort area.” said Duyck. “As I went on this journey with the members of the guild,” Duyck added, “I began to understand the significance of what they were trying to accomplish. These quilt blocks would not only be an artistic addition to the countryside, but would challenge the visiting tourist to travel areas that might not receive notice otherwise.” The Quilt Barn Trail expects to hang their 60th and final block later this year, and will move into the next phase of the project focused on outreach and promotion. To honor the completion of the Trail, they will hold a celebration this spring at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Follow QuiltBarnsWS.blogspot.com for updates.

What Does Art Mean to Hillsboro? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center

The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council

The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. In 2012, the HACC established the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation to create long-term stable funding for our creative community.

Hillsboro Public Art Program

Public art is a part of our mental map of Hillsboro, creating the memorable public places that strengthen our community. Art can attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, remind us of our history, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity. Public art can take many forms - landscape treatments, building facades, freestanding sculptures, murals, lighting and more. It can be permanent or temporary. Often, art is an unexpected discovery that lifts us out of the ordinary and brings a moment of intrigue and delight to our day.

HillsboroARTS MAGAZINE

HillsboroARTS Mission HillsboroARTS is produced three times a year to inform our patrons and complement the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Activities Guide. This publication will help you plan your schedule with our activities, events, and classes in mind. Let Us Know What You Think We value your thoughts and input and are interested in hearing your comments about what you see here or ideas for future topics.
