SCHOOL-AGE NATURE CAMPS

Our school-aged nature based camps meet at Rock Creek Wild Area, a new, centrally located natural area not even open to the general public yet. This property is located at 5419 SE Patterson St. near Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro. 7 – 9 years Diane Kearns

Follow the Flow

Water makes the wetlands special. Learn how the Earth’s limited water resources travel around and around. Follow the water’s course from stream to shore and through the wetlands and other places in between. Hike and explore places shaped by water. Wild Life

The Native Americans that lived in the Northwest and the pioneers who came later depended on the land for their food, shelter, and clothing. Learn some of the skills they needed to survive. Hike and explore a variety of habitats finding nourishment by sampling wild edible plants and berries. How did the early inhabitants of the area survive? Secrets of the Wild

Discover the secrets of our ancient forests. How can we know what goes on there when no one is around? Search for hidden animal homes and build some shelters of your own. Learn to track the animals of the forest, taste a wild plant, and find out if you could live off the land. Defenders of the Galaxy

Monday, August 21, Oregonians will experience a rare total eclipse of the sun. Get ready to appreciate it by learning about our solar system, its planets and how they impact life here on planet Earth. Friday evening campers and their families are invited to return for a chance to look through telescopes at the night sky and the wonders it holds. Treasure Hunt Art of the Wild

Experiencing the wonders of nature first hand is amazing. Learn about how to share your experiences through creating art, as creative people have done throughout history. Paint, sculpt, and create your own works of art inspired by what you see in the wild world around you. Camp includes a Thursday field trip to visit the Columbia Gorge. Hike and explore the wetlands, fields and woods in search of adventure. Build forts and search for the unexpected with binoculars. Learn about mapping and geography. Make a treasure map of your own. Wetlands Wizards

Wizarding instructors help us explore some of the magical powers of wild creatures. How does a spider spin its web? How can one living thing take up acres of forest yet can go unspotted most of the year? Mix up some potions and let the magic begin! Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve offers volunteer counselor opportunities through the WILD Program (Wetlands Individual Leadership Development). This is a great volunteer opportunity for students who love the outdoors and enjoy working with children. Camps run from June – August. WILD volunteers work in an outdoor nature day camp for youth ranging in ages 6 to 12. Applicants must be in high school and be at least 14 years old. Volunteers need be available for a minimum of one week during the summer and are required to attend an orientation program. Students must apply online at Hillsboro-Oregon. gov. Search “WILD”.

Seven weeks of FUN are jam-packed with great games, terrific trips, sizzling sports, and amazing arts and crafts. Every week features an adventurous field trip on Wednesday, with visits to parks, nature discovery excursions and athletic activities at local destinations throughout the rest of the week. For youth entering grades six through high school. CAMP AMP is a place where students are empowered and given the freedom to be creative, develop skills and confidence and can play as loud as they want! Learn from the best! CAMP AMP is taught by professionals and seasoned educators providing opportunities for students to develop valuable skills, techniques, discipline and self-confidence all while making new friends with kids who have the same interests. The atmosphere is fun, positive and educational.

CAMP AMP teaches bass, concert production, drum set, guitar, horns and vocals. Students are divided into Rock bands where they learn songs to prepare for an end-of-camp live performance on Friday evening, July 21. Music is fun, relevant and innovative while accessible to all skill levels. All students will rehearse in their bands, learn the craft of songwriting, create their own band logo and screen print it onto their own t-shirt. Concert Production will teach lighting, sound engineering and stage design. Camp Amp students must attend both weeks. CAMP AMP students sign up for one major. Electives are blended into camp (songwriting, logo creation, t-shirt screen printing). Students need to bring their own instruments. If a student plays electric guitar or bass, he/she must bring an instrument cable to plug into an amplifier (provided). If student plays a string instrument, please bring picks, a tuner and an extra set of strings. Drum students, please bring your own drumsticks. All course offerings are dependent upon enrollment. If a student registers for both Camp Amp and Hillsboro Arts Summer (HAS), he/she must bring a lunch. Faculty bios and class descriptions are located on website at Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/CampAmp. HILLSBORO ARTS SUMMER PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS CAMP July 10 - 21

For youth entering grades six through high school. HILLSBORO ARTS SUMMER (HAS) offers classes in performing and visual arts for youth entering grades six through high school. This two-week camp is held at Century High School beginning Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 21. HAS provides students an opportunity to study with renowned musicians and educators, providing opportunities for students to develop valuable skills, techniques, discipline and self-confidence all while making new friends with kids who have the same interests. HAS provides a fun and supportive environment. HAS includes art, film/TV production, guitar, instrumental music, Jazz studies and musical theater as majors. There is also a variety of electives from which to choose (see list). Students perform a final theater, musical and art production on Thursday evening, July 20 (open to the public). Students sign up for one major and two electives. Students need to bring their own instruments. All course offerings are dependent upon enrollment. Learn American Red Cross techniques in basic water safety, surveillance, first aid and CPR. Once completed, participants 14 years and older are eligible to volunteer as a Junior Guard at SHARC. Pre-requisites: Ability to swim front crawl for 25 meters; breaststroke for 25 meters; and back crawl or elementary backstroke for 25 meters. Sync Into Summer

Combine the worlds of swimming, gymnastics, dance, and music and what do you get? The sport of synchronized swimming! This introductory course teaches the foundations of the sport and prepares participants for a performance on the last day of camp. Recommended equipment: nose clip and swim cap for those with long hair. Back with an all-new format, Swim Team Prep is for swimmers who have spent some time in swim lessons and are ready to venture into the world of competitive swimming. Hour-long training sessions give swimmers a taste of how fun and rewarding it is to be part of a swim team. Recommended equipment: goggles, one piece swim suit for girls/swim jammer for boys, and a swim cap for those with long hair. Requirements for each camp: Bring a snack, sunscreen, and a water bottle each day and a sack lunch if you are staying for the Recreation Swim. Be prepared to spend time outside in the sun in the water and on grass. All camps take place at SHARC and are taught by SHARC Staff. Please note, most camps end at 12:30 and supervision from SHARC staff ends at that time. After eating lunch, campers may cool off during the Recreation Swim for no additional charge.

Movie Makers

This hands-on, interactive course will instruct students on the world of digital video design and production. Students will film, direct and edit their own digital video creations. Students enrolled in this course amaze their peers with green screen and special effects work.

The Gaming Academy

The gaming academy is an all day course for students who love games. During this course students will be immersed into the world of 2D and 3D game design. The gaming academy is a combination of our Video Game Design, Advanced Game Design and 3D Game Design courses. All fees are collected during registration. Cash, check and Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Prices are subject to change without notice. Resident is defined as any individual living within the city limits of Hillsboro. All classes have a minimum enrollment and may be cancelled as early as 10 days before the class starts if the minimum enrollment is not met. Full refunds or credits are given when a class cancels or is postponed. When a recreation class refund is requested by the participant, the refund is prorated from the date of the request; a service charge of $5 applies. No refunds or credits are given after a swim lesson has begun. Please allow up to 4 weeks to receive a refund.

Wait Lists

Registration in classes is first-come, first served. If a class is filled before we receive your registration, your name may be added to a wait list. If openings become available, those on the wait list are notified by phone in order of position on the list. Those who respond within the specified time are added to the class roster. If we do not receive your registration within the specified time, your place in the class is forfeited and the next person on the wait list is notified.

The City of Hillsboro provides parks and recreation services to registered participants. As part of the payment for these services, the participant assumes all risks of personal injury, death and property damage resulting from the provision of these by the City of Hillsboro and its agents. Participant releases Hillsboro and its agents from any liability to the participant for personal injury, death or property damage arising out of the provision of these services to the participant by the City and its agents. The City does not provide insurance coverage to the participant for this activity.
