Director’s Message

Director’s Message The importance of parks and recreation has long been recognized across the country and around the world for its positive impact on neighborhoods, both physically and visually. Recently the broader community-wide contributions made by parks and recreation have gained attention, including: • improving economic health and vitality of communities, • improving physical and mental health of residents of all ages, • reducing crime (keeping youth involved in positive activities and after school programs), • connecting people and creating a strong sense of community, • supporting overall quality of life. We keep all of these at heart when we think about our role in the community and plan our parks, facilities and programs. We recognize that we, with the help of valuable partners, serve the recreational needs of this community and we are proud to do so in the most impactful and efficient ways possible. We want to keep you informed and involved! Please like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, join our e-Newsletter list, visit our website, or give us a call. All of these are great ways for you to learn more about opportunities we offer and how we’re constantly working to make Hillsboro a better place to live, work and play. As always, we also look forward to hearing from you with your feedback and ideas. Have a fantastic fall! Steve Greagor, Director Facebook.com/HillsboroParks

She sings in half-scat and half glissando uttering phrases in alto and then trilling in soprano with her heavy vibrato voice fluttering like nervous birds. I recall Zap Mama more than I do Cesaria Evora, the Queen of Cape Verdean song.” - Patricia Herlevi www.myspace.com/carmensouza www.carmensouza-uk.blogspot.com/

“The Midnight Serenaders re-creation of Jazz Age swing is so convincing that it’s often difficult to differentiate between old standards and the band’s original tunes. Ukulele-strumming songbird Dee Settlemier and covocalist Doug Sammons perfectly communicate the coy innocence of a bygone era, while their bandmates offer a sprightly musical backdrop.” Barbara Mitchell, Portland Tribune www.midnightserenaders.com

14 acre park Natural area Off street parking Play equipment Paved and unpaved trails Plaza with benches Basketball court 1+ mile pedestrian walkways

Located east of the Streets of Tanasbourne between Cornell and Evergreen Roads, the 14 acre Evergreen Park features three distinct areas for recreational enjoyment. These areas are a landscaped plaza with majestic oak trees, an active area that includes a basketball court, playground area and open lawn, and a woodland with paved and wood chip trails amidst the tall fir trees. Paved walks connect the three areas. The site was acquired in 1996, with a land donation from Standard Insurance Company. To complement the wooded portion of the site and help integrate the park with the surrounding neighborhood, the city purchased additional acreage. The park opened in the fall of 2001. Evergreen Park is adopted by Resources for Health - Roots and Shoots.

Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Best Kept Secrets 1. Rood Bridge Park - has a canoe/kayak launch providing access to the Tualatin River. It is one of many access points along the river, and can be found below the River House.

2. Parks are for fun and games – There is an opportunity for a pickup game of basketball, soccer, tennis or even chess at Hillsboro parks. While you’re there, have a picnic in one of the shelters. Between September 30 and May 1 they are all available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. Refer to the Parks Map on pages 52 & 53 to determine the activities available at each park.

3. Tour the Walters Cultural Arts Center – The center is open to the public Monday

through Saturday. New exhibits open the first Tuesday of each month with a reception for the public at 6 pm. Explore the galleries and check out upcoming classes, concerts and events. Thursday nights are Family Art Night, where families create works of art together with the help of on-site artisans. Drop in and check it out!

4. Hondo Dog Park – With the Winter Area now lit until 9 pm every night, your best friend has a fun and safe place to play and socialize this fall.

5. Get active at Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center (SHARC) – In addition to indoor and outdoor pools, SHARC offers a group exercise area, cardio/weight rooms, personal training, massage therapy, birthday/event rooms, classes, and a place for children to play while their parents work out.

6. Wildlife abounds – in Hillsboro’s natural spaces. Our more than 1,500 acres of parks, wetlands and open spaces house a great deal of wildlife. Eagles, great blue herons, falcons, otters, muskrats and beavers are just a few of our wild residents.

7. Orchard Park – is a 21-acre outdoor enthusiast’s playground, offering Hillsboro’s public 9 hole disc golf course, climbing boulders, children’s playground, a mile of trails and wetland boardwalks and access to the 1.5 mile Rock Creek Trail for walkers and cyclists.

8. Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve – is home to beautiful native plants and animals.

Look for hawks, goldfinches, and chickadees, and in the water you may see ducks, geese and a great blue heron or great egret. Trees along the Tualatin River burst into a riot of color in the fall.

9. Noble Woods Park - features 38 acres of forest in the center of Hillsboro with nature

trails meandering throughout. Individuals, civic and school organizations and businesses all helped make this tranquil park possible. CITY OF HILLSBORO Parks & Recreation
