#sheeponthego Interactive Public Art Comes to Hillsboro Quirky foam core sheep will be showing up all around Hillsboro this fall with the arrival of a new public art project, A Champion Flock of Weed Eaters by artist Jed Berk. Housed in a barn on the lawn of the Walters Cultural Arts Center under the care of a mother sheep, the sheep in the flock can be checked out like a library book and taken to explore Hillsboro. The endearing sheep are expected to visit parks, schools and businesses as well as revel in the abundance of the Farmers’ Market. The sheep’s adventures will be captured in photos that are shared on Instagram at #sheeponthego. The album of images will become a community scrapbook, showcasing highlights of Hillsboro and giving a glimpse of the creative minds of local residents. This project takes advantage of the widespread and easy use of cell phone cameras and digital sharing to create a work that becomes more interesting with broad public participation. The creative spark of artist Jed Berk will ignite the imaginations of others to create adventures for the sheep.

A Champion Flock of Weed Eaters was selected as part of the first annual Hillsboro Arts Month, taking place this October. The sheep will make their debut on Saturday, September 19, allowing them the chance to preview preparations for the many performances, exhibitions, open studios and events that will be packed into a rich month of arts and culture. Jed Berk lives in Los Angeles and will come to Hillsboro to set up the flock of sheep and train volunteer “shepherds.” He received a BFA in painting from Rhode Island School of Design, and a MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. He has exhibited in the US and internationally, in venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taiwan; Orange County Museum of Art, CA; Museum of Modern Art, Austria; Kunsthallen Brandts, Denmark; Art Center Nabi, Korea; and Beall Center for Art +Technology, CA. A Champion Flock of Weed Eaters was recognized by Americans for the Arts as an outstanding public art project in their annual awards. Berk feels that A Champion Flock of Weed Eaters reflects on the stewardship of land in urban space. “The installation looks both to the past and future, to the high-tech and low-tech, to public policy and individual responsibility for the stewardship of our world…. By referencing the relationship between shepherd, sheep, and land, the artwork reclaims our collective human responsibility for the environments we create and inhabit.” Although envisioned in Los Angeles, the project is a good fit for Hillsboro where the urban growth boundary is a visible reality, and the discussion of urban and rural character is an active concern.

Naomi Wachira will take the Walters Stage, Friday, October 23 to share an evening of songs and stories with a passionate voice – and brilliant musical talent. Lauded as “Best Folk Singer” in Seattle by Seattle Weekly, and recently returning from a whirlwind tour of the US, Europe, and Africa, she talks with Walters staff member Gayle Ritt about what inspires her music and live performances.

Have you always wanted to be a singer? I did, actually. When I was 5 years old I knew that I wanted to sing. I grew up singing with my parents and

BEST FOLK SINGER: When Naomi Wachira moved to Seattle she released an EP and it was very well received (2011). “That started opening all of these doors – and I started taking my calling seriously,” she notes. “And then, the universe responded.” Fast forward to 2013 when Naomi met Damien Jurado—a well-known icon in Seattle who loved her work. He asked her to open a few of his shows, which exposed her beautiful voice and songwriting talents to more and more people around Seattle. “I didn’t find out about the Seattle Weekly (Best Folk Singer award) until the day it came out in the paper. “I just started doing this!” she thought as she was still figuring the ins and outs… “But it was affirming—you are on the right path. So it was incredible. I quit my job and committed to music full time.”

recall having this feeling – this is what I want to do with my life. After always working and going to school (Naomi has a BA in Communications and a Masters in Theology and Culture), I really started focusing on music when my daughter was born 5 years ago. It was then I thought ‘This [music] is what you were created to do. If you do this you will be happy, and your daughter will be happy.’ And I want to be happy as I’m responsible for another human being. Share with us a bit about your most recent album. The album was made in Seattle and produced by Damien Jurado. It took us two days to record vocals and guitar and was a very easy process. Damien is one of those people who believes that you shouldn’t do too much production, so what you are hearing live is what you are hearing on the record. Authenticity—as pure as possible—and as close to a live performance as possible. I was honored to work with him!

Theology and Culture and moving forward with my masters, so I moved to the Northwest to attend the Seattle School of Theology + Psychology. Do your life experiences and education play into your songs? Yes. Our stories. Where we come from and the people we are. How we affect and the people around us; how to look at things holistically vs. the piece of pie— and honor the parts. Being human, being a woman. I love telling stories when I sing. Sharing something that you want to tell people.

What prompted your move to the Northwest? Our family moved from Kenya to Chicago, where I spent 11 years and I always worked and went to school. I was interested in studying 7

Reflected Past: new artwork graces Orenco Station Plaza A delicate canopy of plum blossoms casts shadows underfoot at the new Orenco Station Plaza. Artist Beliz Brother found her concept for the artwork in the history of the site. In the early 1900s the current plaza location was the site of the Oregon Nursery Company, Orenco. Trees, flowers and fruits were cultivated and sold throughout the West. New varieties of apples and plums were propagated there, including the Orenco apple and the Maynard plum developed by Luther Burbank.

The intersecting cables recall tree branches as the first blooms appear. The blossoms cast shadows that move across the plaza in the day, and in the evening, light from LED fixtures will softly outline the blossoms, creating a poetic vision overhead. The glass on the custom bus shelter facing the plaza echoes the motif of blossoms and branches. Holland Partner Group, the developers of Orenco Station Plaza, made an early commitment to include public art as a signature element of the new urban plaza. At numerous open houses, the public was encouraged to comment on what they would like to see in public art. Many expressed the hope that the artwork would refer to Orenco’s history, or to the beauty of nature. Artist Brother’s solution of creating a canopy overhead created a unique experience while keeping the plaza open for events and movement.

The central plaza is defined by a procession of “fascines,” tall treelike structures that were designed by the landscape architects to recall the bundles of branches in a nursery. From these fascines, Brother has strung a network of stainless steel cables that support simple blossom shapes.

Beliz Brother can look up at a canopy of plum blossoms at her own urban farm in Seattle where she lives and works. She has artworks around the country, including close to twenty in Washington, with additional pieces in San Jose, Phoenix and at Oregon State University. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a residency in Indonesia and fellowship year in Japan. She has done collaborative ventures where she initiates active participation in the development of her art, whether working with community members or other professional artists. She works in many media, often glass and metal enhanced with lighting. Her work is elegant and spare, making strong use of the beauty of the material.

Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment Keeps Growing This October, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council will make its first-ever Award for Excellence from the Arts Endowment. With this decision came a renewed commitment to grow this source of perpetual funding for local organizations that foster and provide creative expression in our community. It also presented an opportunity to reconnect with the many people who treasure the arts as a vehicle for making Hillsboro a vibrant community, and who made contributions to establish the fund in the fall of 2012. Since established, the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment has more than tripled from its original $25,000 in pooled gifts. Updating the founding donors about this wonderful news became a top priority for the Endowment Committee. “There has been great enthusiasm about our progress, the Endowment’s growth and our future plans to continue the positive momentum.” said Endowment Committee Chair Lynn Scheller. “This has translated into new commitments of support for the Endowment and our work to raise awareness and funds.” In fact, the Endowment could soon well surpass the $100,000 milestone thanks to a generous anonymous challenge match of $10,000. That gift prompted

an additional $2,500 donation, also anonymous, to increase the challenge match. The result is an invitation to the community to make contributions to the Endowment by year-end 2015. Donors’ contributions will effectively be doubled by the challenge match. Every $1,000 in the Endowment generates about $50 in support of arts and culture every year, FOREVER!” Details about the challenge match will be announced on October 1, 2015 in conjunction with a festive celebration to honor the recipient of the first Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment Award for Excellence in community arts. The 2015 Endowment Award will be $3,500. The goal is to see the number and amount of awards grow each year by building the Endowment, something the Arts and Culture Council is committed to doing with your support. Hillsboro Arts Month Aims to Let Everyone Know About the City’s Arts and Humanities Shhh. Don’t tell anyone, but October is frequently the best time of the year in Oregon. Of course, there is the grape harvest with its siren call to local vineyards, but it’s the wide array of creative activities available in town that make October one of the best times to get out and explore our community. With live theater and music, dance festivals and art fairs, museum exhibits and book discussions, there is something for everyone. And if you prefer to take an active role, rather than a seat in the audience, there are art classes, open mic nights, acting lessons and open poetry sessions where you can come and share your creative side. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) is orchestrating a new Arts Month initiative this October, to let everyone know about the amazing creative events and programs happening in our community. Hillsboro Arts Month will coincide with National Arts & Humanities Month, which was established in 1993 and is celebrated every October throughout the United States. The national program was initiated to encourage Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of participation in the arts and humanities. It has become the nation’s largest collective annual celebration of the arts. October 2015 marks the first time the City of Hillsboro has hosted its own Arts Month. Many HACC funded programs will take place during Arts Month, including Affordable Art for Everyone (Oct 3), Plein Air at Washington County (Oct 1-4), the Westside Quilters Guild’s biennial Quilt show, Color POWer (Oct 3-4), The Time Travelers’ Ball (Oct 10), and the Washington County Artists’ Open Studios Tour (Oct 17-18). One of the many ways you can celebrate Hillsboro Arts Month is by checking out the free Pop-Up Performances taking place every Saturday throughout the community. • Plein Air Quick Draw (Oct. 3): A timed live painting competition hosted by Sequoia Gallery + Studios from 10 am to noon, on the downtown Courthouse lawn during the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market. • Mandolins at OrenKofest (Oct. 10): Musicians from the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra will join the festivities at the new OrenKofest at the Orenco Plaza at 5 pm. • Theatre at the Library (Oct. 17): Actors from Bag&Baggage Productions will roam the Hillsboro Main Library (2850 NE Brookwood Parkway) from 2–4 pm, performing a variety of scenes and reading throughout the building. • Youth Performances at M&M Marketplace (Oct 24): The Hillsboro Community Youth Choir will join forces with Una Voz Mariachi Band to perform from 2 – 3 pm at the M&M Marketplace (346 SW Walnut St.) in honor of their 15th anniversary. “Arts Month is an opportunity for us to focus attention on the creative community at work in Hillsboro and to encourage area residents and visitors to engage the arts by having at least one new cultural experience during the month of October,” said Melissa Moore, Community Arts Program Supervisor.

HERE BE ART! Celebrating the Art of Hillsboro October 6 — November 16

Medieval cartographers used the images of monsters, sea serpents, or other mythological creatures to mark uncharted territories on maps for would-be explorers. The phrase hic sunt dracones, or “here be dragons”, has come to mean an unexplored place with possible danger. Here Be Art! turns a positive light on the unknown, inviting would-be explorers to discover a world of local creativity and fine arts in the Walters gallery. This exhibit unveils an exciting geography of Hillsboro artists and projects, emphasizing the idea that art is happening all around us—often in unexpected forms. The artwork for this exhibit is highlighted by Artosaur, Artosaur & map of Hillsboro a mythical symbol which draws attention and visibility to the many artists at work in our community. This larger-than-life robotic dinosaur which serves as an advocate for the arts, an interactive art project aimed at bringing celebration and visibility to the local creativity of Hillsboro. The Far North: Portrait of the Arctic Larry Cwik December 1 — January 25 | Upstairs Gallery

The work of Larry Cwik traverses the five coastal nations of the Arctic, capturing the ingenuity and challenge of life and the changing conditions of the region. Though remote and little-visited by outsiders, the ecology of the Arctic is critically intertwined with the ecology of the Northern Hemisphere—and the planet as a whole. This exhibit provides a necessary and timely window into this remote, foreboding and beautiful place, as photographed during Cwik’s travels throughout the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. Cwik’s large-scale limited-edition photographs stir reflection about our global relationship to the people and ecology of the Far North, and remind us of the delicate interconnectedness of our planet’s people and places. FROM WEYA WITH LOVE Zimbabwe Artist Project December 1 — January 25 | Downstairs Gallery

The vibrant artwork from this exhibit highlights the artistic accomplishments of women artists from the village of Weya, Zimbabwe. These women are subsistence farmers, mothers, and householders as well as artists. The embroideries and paintings from this exhibit give a rich glimpse of the artists’ lives in their own words. In addition, biographies for each of the artists offers a deeper connection to a woman a world away. The Zimbabwe Artists Project is a nonprofit organization partnering with women in Zimbabwe, buying artwork and supporting self-enterprise.

Edmo is a playwright, poet, performer, and consultant to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, and also plays the coyote spirit on the popular television series Portlandia. JOIN THE HACC Last year, Primrose & Tumbleweeds co-owner Dawn Sellers joined the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) because she was inspired by the growing role of the arts in Downtown Hillsboro. Appointed by Mayor Willey and approved by City Council in January of 2014, Dawn says, “the most rewarding thing about serving on the HACC is being able to shape the future of arts in Hillsboro. I feel like I am truly making a difference for our community and helping Hillsboro become a leader in Washington County.” Since her appointment, she has volunteered at numerous events such as the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Summit, Leadership Forum, and on the Arts and Culture Endowment Committee, working with Hillsboro Community Foundation to grow a long-term funding source for the arts and culture in Hillsboro. Meet Gerald Sticka

the country and has amassed a devout following of students who swear by his skill as a teacher and his integrity as a person. “Gerald is an artist by calling; a mensch by his living,” says longtime student Steve Swoboda. Another student, who took her very first painting class last summer at the Walters, says “Gerald is such a patient teacher. I framed my painting when the class was over and I’ll treasure it forever.” Sticka’s natural talent and love of people mean his classes fill up quickly with those eager for a coveted spot in his classroom.

“It’s my mother’s fault that I’m an artist,” explains Gerald Sticka, well-known local painter and teaching instructor at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. “I talked too much as a kid. My mother didn’t like that so she sent me outside with a pad and pencil and told me to draw every animal I could find. I came back and showed her my work. She shook her head and squinted her eyes and said ‘what kind of tree is that supposed to be?’ That made me mad; it was supposed to be a squirrel. So I marched back outside and kept drawing. I was a stubborn little fellow, and my mother was hard to please. I took it as a challenge. I would go out back and draw everything I could lay my eyes on and try to get it down right so that my mother would approve. And that’s how I got to learning how to draw.” Though he was a self-taught artist from an early age, Gerald Sticka worked for most of his life in a lucrative publishing job before deciding to go rogue and commit to being a painter full time. His friends and family advised him that he was making a mistake when he left his post at the Oregonian to move into a trailer in rural Wyoming. “I did it because I love the outdoors and because I wanted to paint the buffalo,” he says. “I grew up around nature. That’s where I wanted to be.” Immersed in the natural beauty of the landscape, Sticka embraced his new life as an artist and never looked back. That decision, made over 25 years ago, has affected the lives of countless students who have been deeply touched by Sticka’s influence as an artist and teacher. Throughout the years, he has sold hundreds of pieces of art in galleries across 18

Beyond his inimitable legacy of teaching at the Walters—which he has done for nearly a decade—Sticka’s connection to the arts center is deeply rooted in family history. He was born— and raised his family—within five blocks of the Walters. And in the days even before it was the Walters, when the building was first being constructed as a Lutheran church in 1949, Sticka’s uncle helped lay the concrete foundation, and his uncle’s father was one of those who chiseled the beautiful red stonework that defines the building to this day. Completing the circle, Gerald says “my students at the Walters are like family to me, and it’s a family that keeps growing.”

Some of my photos are in this magazine! I also helped with events, like First Tuesday in July and August. What have you most enjoyed in your internship? I’ve really enjoyed taking photos for the Walters and I’ve discovered a new skill I never knew I had. I got to work with Rick Paulson, a wonderful professional photographer. He trained me how to use a digital SLR camera and taught me tips and tricks

to get the best picture for different situations. It’s something I never have had the opportunity to do, and I never imagined myself doing. But I love it. Photography is something I was always curious about. Honestly, I never thought that I would get to do this. What are your plans after the internship? I plan to earn my Oregon Transfer Degree and apply to Pacific University for a bachelor’s degree in social work. I want to work with kids and families in need. On the side, I’d like to continue learning and practicing photography. Who knows what can happen! What advice do you have for other young people interested in an internship? Be open minded and go for every opportunity that opens to you. Give it your all. I’m so glad I took the chance.

The City of Hillsboro’s Summer Internship Program is designed to provide meaningful career exploration and experience in a professional work environment. The goal is for student interns to gain firsthand knowledge and understanding of local government through pre-professional work experiences in various occupational fields. To participate in this summer program, candidates must be a student from the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council or PCC Future Connect and participate in an application and interview process. In addition to the valuable work experience gained, there are professional development, mentorship, and community service components added to ensure each intern has a diverse experience and increased knowledge about the City of Hillsboro functions and how different departments work together to make our City awesome. 28

Cristina Caravaca | Cultural Arts Program Manager City of Hillsboro | Parks and Recreation Department | Cultural Arts Division What does ART mean to HILLSBORO? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education. Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. Hillsboro Public Art Program Public art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.
