Fall 2017 Changes to Refund Policy Beginning Winter\Spring Session Hillsboro Parks & Recreation is committed to offering high quality services and delivering those services to the residents of Hillsboro in the most effective and cost efficient manner possible. Meeting our customers’ needs is key to delivering services to our residents, including efficient registration systems and a refund policy that allows residents on waiting lists to access services in a timely manner. To that end, HP&R staff will make every effort to help patrons with their specific registration needs, and to help all our patrons participate in the programming of their choice. All fees are collected during registration. Cash, check and Visa, MasterCard or Discover cards are accepted. Prices are subject to change without notice. Resident is defined as any individual living within the city limits of Hillsboro. All classes have a minimum enrollment and may be cancelled as early as 10 days before the class starts if the minimum enrollment is not

met. Full refunds or credits are given when a class cancels or is postponed. Registrants must withdraw by end of the business day at least four (4) days prior to the start of the program, unless otherwise specified, to receive a credit, or refund minus a $5 processing fee. For example, if a camp/class starts on a Monday, the patron would need to call the prior Thursday to receive a full credit/refund for the class. Requests made within four days will be subject to standard processing fees and an administrative fee of 25% of the total program fee. No credits or refunds will be issued after the start of programs. Cost of admission tickets and pre-paid program materials cannot be refunded. Please allow approximately two weeks to receive a refund if it is processed by check.

Hillsboro Honored as 2017 Playful City USA Community

National nonprofit KaBOOM! recently honored Hillsboro with a 2017 Playful City USA designation. Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow, and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents. The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities across the country that make it as easy as possible for kids to play. In total, these communities feature more than 14,000 safe and engaging playspaces that serve more than 4 million kids. Hillsboro and Central Point are the first two cities in Oregon to receive the Playful City USA designation. Hillsboro believes play is for everyone; from park playgrounds to extensive programs at the senior center, the City regularly engages the community to exercise both their bodies and minds. Some of the initiatives that have allowed Hillsboro to be designated a 2017 Playful City include art classes, baby gym, swimming lessons, team sports, and summer camps for youth; for teens and adults, programs include fine and performing arts, nature-based recreation, sports and fitness. In 2016, the City offered 124 summer camps that spanned topics from adventure and nature to tech and science. “We’re incredibly honored that Hillsboro is one of two cities in Oregon to be honored with this title,” said Parks & Recreation Director Dave Miletich. “We feel it really speaks to our desire to provide, not just quality parks, but safe spaces and activities for everyone.” As cities become hotbeds for innovation, communities across the country are creating inventive ways to attract and retain residents. Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to ensure kids have great places to play—all with the ultimate goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. In addition to the playground down the street, Playful City USA communities are turning grocery stores, vacant lots, crosswalks and sidewalks into opportunities for play.

“We are thrilled to recognize Hillsboro for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.” To see the full list of Playful City USA communities and to learn more about making play the easy choice for kids, visit kaboom.org/playfulcityusa. Outdoor Ice Skating and More! Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/WinterVillage

Winter Village, Outdoor Ice Skating Rink, Returns to Hillsboro for the Holidays

Events

For the past two years Hillsboro Parks & Recreation has offered Winter Village, outdoor ice skating, to the metro area with more “Winter Village is helping our than 12,000 ice skaters and spectators enjoying community make lasting memories the winter wonderland. and create some real holiday Winter Village at Jerry Willey Plaza in Orenco magic.”~ Iris Ringer Station debuted in 2015, proving to City of Hillsboro organizers that this special holiday tradition is strongly desired. Returning for its third season, Winter Village, the region’s only open-air ice skating rink reopens Friday, November 24 and runs through Monday, January 1. This gives skaters even more time to lace up and enjoy the ice. In addition, a newly-created Winter Village scene near Orenco Station Plaza’s oak trees feature metal-framed carolers and gingerbread characters, lit up similar to ZooLights at the Oregon Zoo.

“People want more fun things to do in the winter to spend time with friends and family, and create new traditions,” said Winter Village organizer Iris Ringer. “Winter Village is helping our community make lasting memories and create some real holiday magic.” Ringer says children and families were well represented during daytime skate sessions last year, while teens and couples skated mmore often at night. “Many people have moved here from outside of Oregon and are excited to have a fun winter experience in the city,” Ringer said. “Having shopping and dining options around Jerry Willey Plaza makes Winter Village an even better place to grab a bite to eat, lace up the skates, and enjoy a hot beverage.” Even more restaurants are open in the Orenco Station area, making Winter Village ice skating a full day experience with skating, shopping, dining and activities for family and friends. With visitors able to ride MAX Light Rail to Orenco Station, Ringer expects between 7,000 and 10,000 people to enjoy Winter Village in 2017. Find a full list of Winter Village activities, hours, and prices at Hillsboro-Oregon.gov/WinterVillage. 28

Walters Gallery Exhibits Gallery exhibit hours: Monday – Thursday: 9 am – 9 pm | Friday: 9 am – 5 pm

The Walters showcases a diverse selection of artwork by both established and emerging artists year round. Gallery receptions are held on the first Tuesday of each month, featuring light sweets by Decadent Creations and live music in the lobby; for more information about our free Tuesday Happenings see page 60.

The Frida Project | Group Mural Exhibition August 1– September 26 | Upstairs & Downstairs Galleries

In the spirit of cross-cultural understanding and collaboration between Latin American and Caucasian communities in Hillsboro, The Frida Project brought together a group of Hillsboro artists whose multiple perspectives explore themes of intersecting identities and cultures. Together, these artists have created a collection of mural panels that reflect the powerful legacy of the great Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and explore possibilities for how her work and ideas might relate to our home here in the Willamette Valley.

First Tuesday Reception: September 5 | 5 – 6:30 pm

Live music in the lobby by Jackie Hicks, Hammered Dulcimer

Reckless Forms | Dianne Jean Erickson October 3 – November 24 | Upstairs & Downstairs Galleries

This fascinating collection consists of encaustic monotypes created on a hot plate. For these one-of-a-kind prints, pigmented wax bars move freely over the plate as they melt—creating the paint—then paper is laid over the hot wax to create the image. Each piece comes from mind to hand to paper without preconceived ideas about what they should be, leaving evidence of the artist’s hand in the making of each mark. The figures in “Reckless Forms” are intuitive and gestural, evocative of bodily and ethereal forms that are open to the imagination.

First Tuesday Receptions:

October 3 | 5 - 6:30 pm Live music in the lobby by Dan Abrahamson (Guitar)

NEW! Art Walk & Talk: Please join us in the upstairs gallery this evening for an exhibit tour with the artist from 6 – 6:15 pm. Diane Jean Erickson discusses process and inspiration and answers visitor questions. November 7 | 5 - 6:30 pm Live music in the lobby by Jason Okamoto (Classical Guitar)

Featured Artists at the Civic Center

Check out these featured artists at the Hillsboro Civic Center! These exhibits, selected by Walters gallery staff, are open for viewing by the public Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm. The gallery wall at the Civic Center is located just outside the Shirley Huffman auditorium on the first floor, to the left of the front doors.

The Abstracts & Abstract Expressions December 5 – January 26 Two solo shows exploring abstract expression in paint

The Abstracts | Plata Garza Upstairs Gallery

“The Abstracts” is a collection of experimental acrylic paintings wherein each piece is a vibrant exercise in color, process and perspective. The artist has hidden a symbol in each painting: three dots—a personal hieroglyphic that is both a part of the painting and something that stands apart as a marker of the artist’s presence, like a flag on the moon saying “I was here.” While the pieces in this collection move through a variety of different modes, points of view and subject matters, the symbol of the artist unites them all—a mysterious presence that hovers in the abstraction of each piece.

Barbara Mason

Civic Center | August – October Solarplate Intaglio abstract etchings exploring the tenacity of the human spirit and the strength that moves us forward.

Sam Marroquin

Civic Center | November 2017 – January 2018

Walters

Abstract Expressions | Steve Kleier

Abstract encaustic and mixed-media paintings exploring environment and humanity through layering and found objects.

Downstairs Gallery

To achieve the abstract visions of this new watercolor collection, artist Steve Kleier looks to an inner world and dreamlike space, allowing fleeting impressions to come to the surface to be interpreted on the canvas. “Just as music does not imitate sounds we hear,” says Kleier, “so these paintings do not imitate things we see…they are visual music.”

Architecture of Internment: The Build Up to Wartime Incarceration

Walters

Pop-up exhibit and talk by Graham Street Productions

Tuesday, October 17 | 7 – 8:30 pm | Walters Theater In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, this deeply moving and celebrated exhibition is touring locations throughout the state to share the heartbreaking history of internment of Oregonians of Japanese ancestry during WWII. It tells the story of how individuals, organizations, businesses and elected officials advocated for the incarceration of Oregonians of Japanese ancestry or stood by while it happened—as well of the story of those who spoke against it. The exhibit covers the time period leading up to incarceration (1941-1942) through actual documents of the time: letters, resolutions, blueprints, photographs and other archival documents from across the state of Oregon. Anne Galisky of Graham Street Productions and special guest speakers introduce and provide context for the exhibit. For one night only, visitors have the chance to explore the exhibit at their own pace in the Walters’ theatre. Special thanks to Meyer Memorial Trust, Regional Arts & Culture Council, and Western States Center for sponsoring this exhibit. The People of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation:

Meet Trina Evans Trina Evans is truly a Renaissance Woman. In addition to envisioning, planting, and maintaining the myriad flora and fauna of Hillsboro’s parks, Trina mends and alters uniforms, teaches classes within Parks & Recreation, cooks for staff retreats, helps manage volunteer groups, assists in overseeing some of the children’s recreation outings, and sends mosquitoes in to the West Nile test program. She has sewn costumes for the Portland Opera and seen every National Monument in the United States; in her spare time she runs marathons, whitewater rafts, rides horses, takes welding classes, and plays a handful of instruments—all while raising a 17-year-old granddaughter, battling stage three cancer, and dealing with the loss of her husband. Trina first started with Parks & Recreation in the winter of 1989 as a seasonal water aerobics instructor. As her position came to a close, she was asked by the Parks Director if she wanted to join the maintenance team. A small group of five people at that point, Trina spent much of her time cleaning bathrooms and managing trash—which she was happy to do since she was continuing to grow her passion of building custom cabinetry and saw maintenance as a temporary means to an end. “I got bored cleaning bathrooms pretty quickly though, so I would gradually just keep adding things to my duties. We were so small that no one ever said no, and I did whatever they needed…Luckily there was a lot of trust and they just let me go for it,” she says.

Master Gardener Trina Evans works tirelessly to keep Hillsboro’s parks and facilities blooming and looking their best.

At the time, Parks & Recreation didn’t have any dedicated person doing plantings. A home gardener with an eye and appreciation for natural beauty, Trina slowly turned her day-to-day attention on more landscape-oriented duties. Once she found out the City would also help pay for specialized training, she leapt at the chance to study horticulture and agriculture. From there cabinetry was put on hold, while landscaping became her passion. Trina has since become the green thumb behind many of

Hillsboro’s most well-recognized and beloved parks and greenways. She has gradually turned a small patch of grass into the striking Harold Eastman Memorial Rose Garden, and she has transformed a weed patch at the West End triangle into a spectacular “Welcome to Hillsboro” entrance. If you love a landscape in Hillsboro and feel that someone put their blood, sweat, and tears into creating it, you are likely looking at one of Trina’s masterpieces. “Every park has its own character. The first thing I do with a bare space is go there at different times of day to see what the light is like throughout the course of the day. From there, I’ll look at the park’s personality: if it’s a more natural or manicured area, if it’s a drive-by or walk-by place, whether it will have kids and dogs running through it. Everything has an impact on the area, so I spend a lot of time beforehand looking at these angles to see what that park is meant to be,” Trina says. What’s more impressive is, though seasonally Trina may hire on an assistant, the watering, planting, pruning, and trimming that goes into making and keeping these areas dazzling is done solo. After the initial set-up with irrigation and project teams to make sure the area is ready, Trina gets to work by herself. Though this solitary working style has produced the incredible results you see at Hillsboro’s parks, sometimes it can lead to a daunting realization that vision must become reality, regardless of obstacles. “I get up every day and tell myself on the way to work that everything I do is going to be great, and everything I do is going to be successful, and I hope it’s true,” she says. “Some things just kind of morph into how they’re going to be. You can have the best laid plans for an area, and it just turns out another way. You have to roll with it because it can turn out to be great.” It would seem, based on the roads her life has traveled, Trina doesn’t just mean that in regard to landscape architecture.

Twenty-seven years after telling herself Parks Maintenance was temporary, she is still going strong with no immediate plans to retire. “Someday I’ll retire so I can live life a bit and relax more than I do now,” she says. “I’m interested in a lot of different things; I think it’s great to not be single-minded, but to know a lot and do a lot. It helps you stay as young as you can for as long as you can, even though you’re getting older.” One thing is certain—Trina Evans will have no lack of hobbies to further pursue when the day for retirement comes. Currently on her list of adventures? Obtaining her scuba certification and going diving in Fiji.

“I get up every day and tell myself on the way to work that everything I do is going to be great, and everything I do is going to be successful, and I hope it’s true.” ~ Trina Evans
