Make time in your day to relax and take in the eastern sky as the sun sets and the full moon rises. Vivid colors paint the sky, the earth’s shadow rises, heralding the coming of night, and the moon makes its dramatic entrance into the night sky. Daytime wildlife seeks shelter as nighttime creatures emerge. A naturalist helps you tune in to the many wonderful events that attend the passing of day into night. Dress comfortably for the weather. Bring a chair and something warm to drink if you like.

Join us for an evening of bonechilling tales from Hawaii, told by award-winning storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung. He says, “Hawaii is a mystical place where the veil between the worlds is very thin. Ancient Hawaiian Gods and supernatural beings still have power and make themselves known. Each wave of immigrants have brought with them their own spiritual beliefs, guardians, and monsters. They too have found a home in the Islands.” We explore some of these stories, beginning with the odd and the unusual and working our way up to the truly terrifying, ratcheting up the terror with each progressive story. Takiyama-Chung invites you to take a walk into the dark side of paradise, where the shadows talk back. Recommended for adults, teens, and/or older children who enjoy scary stories.

A great place to play is coming soon! Turner Creek Park | Hillsboro, OR | August 25, 2018

Everyone Can Play More with These Improvements to Hillsboro Parks

Do you love to play outdoors? If so, you’ll really enjoy improvements to four popular Hillsboro parks this summer: 1) Orenco Woods Nature Park Picnic Shelter – a second picnic shelter will soon be available at this popular and centrallylocated nature park. It will hold two picnic tables and will be available for drop-in use. It’s located just south of the historic McDonald House in the park, and overlooks a beautiful oak savanna meadow. Construction is anticipated to be completed this fall. 2) Walnut Street Park Improvements– partygoers will love the new 30-person picnic shelter featuring a piñata area, a new restroom, and a new shade structure near the splash pad. These improvements were funded by a Community Development Block Grant. Other than a few finishing details, work has wrapped up, although the splash pad will remain closed until next year so grass can grow around it. Thank you for your patience during the summer construction. 3) Turner Creek Park KaBoom! Playground – all ages will love the new playground, shade structures, activity areas, refurbished picnic tables, and landscaping at Turner Creek Park. All of this has been made possible by a generous grant from KaBoom! (funded by M Financial and Pacific Life Foundation), along with the help of the Hillsboro Community Foundation and fantastic volunteers. The work will be completed on August 25 by 300 volunteers from the community and sponsor organizations, and the park will open for play on September 2. This is the second KaBoom! project in Hillsboro, following the 2016 installation of the playground at McKinney Park (funded by CarMax Cares). 4) Rood Bridge Water Craft Launch – Tualatin River enthusiasts can now access the river at Rood Bridge Park thanks to a new paved ramp and seasonal floating dock that accommodates canoes, kayaks and other hand launched water craft (Note: the ramp does not accommodate large boats launched from a trailer). The new launch officially opened in May, thanks in part to financial assistance from the State of Oregon and Metro. The floating dock will be available each year from Memorial Day through Labor Day, as long as river conditions are suitable.
