Director’s Message

Director’s Message Happy New Year and welcome to our 2011 Winter/ Spring Activities Guide! You’ll find this issue full of great opportunities for all ages to stay active, have indoor and outdoor adventures, be creative, make new friends, and much more. If you haven’t yet discovered our RecXpress online registration system, give it a try by visiting www.ci.hillsboro. or.us/ParksRec. You can browse opportunities anytime and after initially calling 503-681-6120 to get your login and PIN, you can register for programs through this secure 24/7 website. A significant percentage of our registrations are made online through RecXpress, and we have received great feedback about how convenient it is. Of course, registration is still available over the phone, in person or by mail, but RecXpress makes it easier than ever for you to get involved. Everyone is still talking about the slow economic recovery. I can assure you that your Parks & Recreation Department has been working hard on creative ways to make new, affordable offerings and service improvements happen for the community. Some of these include: • Outdoors In Park @ the Plaza – expected to open by February 2011 in the lower level of the Civic Center in downtown Hillsboro, this is a new kind of park experience – indoors! It includes a full-sized playground system, an 8’ tall climbing wall, and a unique and active whole-body electronic gaming system, birthday party and event rentals, and recreation classes for all ages. See page 64 for more details. • Lights at Hondo Dog Park - thanks to the fundraising help of the Hillsboro Dog Association and donations from the community, Hondo Dog Park now has lighting in the winter area. The winter area of the park is now open until 9:00 pm daily, allowing dog owners and their four-legged buddies to visit the park for fresh air and exercise into the evening during the dark winter season. • Rock Creek Trail Extension & Crossings – this bike and pedestrian trail currently extends from Orchard Park to the north side of US 26. With help from a federal grant, work is underway to extend the trail about two-thirds of a mile south from Orchard Park to NW Willkins Street and to add a mid-block street crossing at Wilkins. A recent grant to Washington County and the City from ODOT will fund the development of a signalized midblock crossing at Evergreen Parkway. Visit our website for more details on this project. We are extremely proud of the quality programs and services we provide to residents at a great value, and of the positive impact they have on Hillsboro’s quality of life. Come on out this winter and spring and join us in celebrating what a great community this is to live, work and play in!

You’ll see him sitting in the back row of the cello section at all of these shows as if to appear an anonymous member of the horde. Douglas Jenkins, who often pens 15-20 new scores for each performance, has been at the heart of the band’s rise to immense popularity.

Body Language is an exhibition of figurative art that looks beyond traditional portraiture and into narrative postures. Viewers will discover artwork that is about identity, relationships and reflection. The artists chosen for this exhibit, all women, are varied in age and origin.

What Remains

Shakespeare the Thief

Japanese Americans in Internment Camps

Adaptation and Pilfering in the Bard’s Work

January 18 @ 7:00 pm, free

February 15th @ 7:00 pm, fee

Internationally known poet, Margaret Chula, and fascinating fiber artist, Cathy Erickson present their sevenyear collaborative project combining poetry and quilts, making the Japanese American World War II internment experience come alive for the Spoken Word audience. The quilts and poems in the beautiful book, What Remains: Japanese Americans in Internment Camps offer visual and poetic insight into this period in history. Each poem speaks in the voice of a Japanese American imprisoned during World War II.

William Shakespeare is, without question, the greatest playwright in the English language. But the Bard was also one of the most prolific pilferers of other writer’s work in all of Elizabethan drama. Writer or thief? Does it matter? Scott Palmer, the hilarious and critically acclaimed Artistic Director of Hillsboro’s own Bag & Baggage Productions, will examine the question of the validity of adaptation as a form of creative expression. This will not be your grandmother’s lecture on Shakespeare – Mr. Palmer is never anything short of wonderfully entertaining. Don’t miss this!

Liberty & Union: Presidential campaign songs of the 1860 & 1864 elections

Jeni Foster

March 15th @ 7:00 pm, free

“Illinois” Doug Tracy

Arts Center favorite Jeni Foster returns with her guitar in this Irish musical treat – perfect for the St. Patrick’s Day season! In this program Jeni combines a historical narrative of the Irish people with her extensive knowledge of traditional Irish music. What is created is a complex portrait of an enduring people – from those who fled to America from the starvation of the Great Potato Famine in the 1840s, to those who stayed behind and struggled with the loss of their sons and daughters. The Irish story is one of struggle, perseverance and triumph.

Hearing Voices Storytelling Festival Keep Me on the Edge of My Seat, Then Make Me Laugh ‘Till it Hurts!

May 17th @ 7:00 pm, free Music was a main component of the campaigns for Presidential candidates in the 1860s. “Illinois” Doug Tracy guides the audience through a musical tour of these songs and campaigns. Looking back at these songs gives us an insight to the candidates’ positions and how divided Americans were at the time of the Civil War and the election of Abraham Lincoln. Discover how music helped to shape what were, probably, the most crucial Presidential elections our nation has ever held.

The Oregonian’s fabulous garden writer, Kym Pokorny, shares some of her garden favorites including trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Whether it’s a multiple-season interest, ease of maintenance, amazing foliage or flowers that bloom for months, some plants work harder in the garden than others.

th

With wit, humor, and body moves galore Kelly Hoffman will have you laughing ‘till your sides hurt. And of course, everything is funnier after you’ve just been attacked by a cobra, hung on the side of a cliff or bested a 2-ton elephant! Whether with twists on fairy tales, or with her own version of the classic tall-tale, Kelly has what it takes to deliver a masterful performance that spans adventure and comedy, guaranteed to entertain adults and older children alike.

4.4 acre park Open grassy playing field Picnic shelter Expanded playground Restrooms Climbing boulder Tot play area Grassy play area .25 mile pedestrian walkways

In 1975, the Hillsboro Utilities Commission donated this 4.4 acre site to the City of Hillsboro for a park. Park development began in 1976 with the help of a grant from the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission and donations from local businesses. A Fire Department substation housing a rescue unit and volunteer training was permitted as a temporary use in 1976 and occupies .8 acre of the site until 2012. A playground and picnic shelter were added in 1978 with the help of grants from the Land & Water Conservation Fund and the State Grant-In-Aid program. The park was renovated and re-dedicated in 2010 with the help of a Community Development Block Grant. Bicentennial Park now features new ADA accessible restrooms, an expanded playground with a climbing boulder and a tot play area for little ones. The park also has new walkways amd park furnishings including benches, tables and waste receptacles. Register Online Anytime: www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/ParksRec
