Artist-in-Our-Community to Offer Opportunities for Creativity in Unexpected Locales With the goal of supporting art in Hillsboro, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment committee has launched the Artistin-Our-Community Project. The project seeks to embed an artist in the city, where they will work to create an inclusive community-based project, activities, and events. Selected from a diverse pool of applicants, Dawning McGinnis, the inaugural Artist-in-Our-Community, hopes to inspire and encourage residents’ personal creative expression and bring attention to the arts in less traditional settings. The project will run July through September 2018, with a culminating event during Hillsboro Arts Month in October. McGinnis has family in Hillsboro and currently lives in Tualatin where she works as the resident artist at Arcane Cellars and teaches art classes, including classes pairing wine-tasting and painting for people who do not necessarily consider themselves artists. While serving as an Artist-in-OurCommunity, McGinnis plans to hold pop-up painting classes, during which she will interview participants about what Hillsboro means to them and guide them in creating a small painting based on their responses. According to McGinnis, she will ask participants “If you were going to send a friend a postcard of Hillsboro, what would it be?” At the end of the 2

project, she will use the individual paintings to create a large art installation, as well as a video of the process. McGinnis will take these pop-up events to at least 15 different venues throughout the City including laundromats, the Boys and Girls Club, Family Promise, and the Hillsboro Farmers’ Markets. She would like to identify additional host venues, as she hopes to host painting sessions in as many as three different locations each week, reaching a wide variety of people in Hillsboro. Hillsboro First Tuesday Art Walk What are you doing the first Tuesday of each month from 5-8 pm? In Downtown Hillsboro, people are bustling in and out of local restaurants, businesses, galleries, and theaters participating in Hillsboro’s monthly First Tuesday Art Walk. During First Tuesday Art Walk, you’ll get the chance to meet artists and see their art on display in galleries and restaurants, hear an acoustic set by a local musician, dance to a full band in a local business, see performers practice their craft on stage, leave with a one-of-a-kind handmade item by a local artisan, or make your own art project to take home. All of this is nestled between local restaurants, bars, retail shops, and businesses covering the twelve blocks between 1st and 5th Avenues, and Washington and Lincoln Streets with an easy walk from one place to another. Michele McCall-Wallace, Hillsboro’s Cultural Arts Manager, notes, “There is something for everyone and it is a great way to enjoy the arts, support our local businesses, and connect to the community…and it’s a free event too!”

In May, the Walters expanded its hours and activities to feature arts and culture on all three floors during First Tuesday Art Walk. Now you’ll find art on display in both the upstairs and downstairs galleries, a family-friendly art activity in one of the classrooms, live music, and artists selling hand-made items such as jewelry, functional ceramics, and handmade cards in the lobby. Each month features an artist talk, demonstration, or a special presentation by a local arts and cultural organization to round out your experience. As you head down the street, keep your eyes open for sandwich board signs displaying the First Tuesday Art Walk logo inviting you to enter places hosting artists and musicians. Venues are growing and include: Perks of Art, McNally’s Taproom, Bag&Baggage at The Vault Theatre, Pizzario, Insomnia Coffee, The Collective Kitchen, Sequoia Gallery + Studios, Clarks Bistro, Influence Music Hall, Primrose & Tumbleweeds, Weichart Realtors, Artfull Garden & Company, ColoursArt, Catherine Bede Gallery, and more. The Walters showcases a diverse selection of artwork by both established and emerging local artists year-round. Gallery receptions are held on the first Tuesday of each month, featuring light sweets by Decadent Creations, activities and live music by local musicians. Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve—a 635acre wetland along the Tualatin River—is a critical habitat for many species and an important migration stop for numerous types of birds. This exhibit presents the work of artists from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. With the help and guidance of staff from Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, these artists have spent the past year illustrating the flora and fauna of Jackson Bottom in an effort to foster greater understanding and appreciation for this thriving natural resource.

Stories and Dance from Afro-Brazilian/Cuban Sacred Traditions Tuesday, June 19 | 7 – 8 pm | Walters Theatre

For all ages—family friendly! Professional dancer and choreographer Jamie Minkus presents a program that explores the art of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban sacred traditions in an interactive evening of dance, stories, and gentle exploratory movement. These traditions are filled with stories and dances inspired by different deities (Orixas)/characters who embody various archetypes and natural elements. Take the opportunity to explore these characters in easy movement exercises that anybody can do—no experience necessary to participate!

Over $50,000 Funding Community-Base Since 2008, the City of Hillsboro has supported community-based arts & cultural programs through the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council’s (HACC) grant program. HACC grants provide much needed funds for arts programs, capacity-building, and core operating support. According to Melissa Moore, the Community Arts Program Supervisor, “with these funds, groups pay local actors or musicians, buy costumes or instruments, and provide art education to youth in the community. These dollars make a difference.” This year the HACC awarded 17 grants totaling $50,450 to 15 different organizations. This year’s recipients include:

Project Grants: HART Theatre to support production-related expenses for The Lion King, Jr. in November 2018. Hillsboro Downtown Partnership to assist with the marketing of the Hillsboro Downtown as an Arts and Entertainment District. Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market to provide free live music on the Sandy Farmer Stage, which highlights local musical talent at the Tuesday Night Market. Minter Bridge Elementary PTA to fund a free after school theatre program in spring 2019. Miracle Theatre Group (Teatro Milagro) to support a 3-day bilingual artsintegrated residency for Brown Middle School in Fall 2018 that will include a Milagro original production. Oregon Children’s Theatre to support “Theatre for All” programming for underserved youth in Hillsboro schools. Sequoia Gallery + Studios for the expansion of their annual Plein Air community event leading up to October’s Hillsboro Arts Month. Tualatin Valley Creates to support their mission of increasing audience awareness of arts opportunities and experiences in Hillsboro and throughout the county. Washington County Arts Alliance to fund catalog printing for the 9th Annual Washington County Artists Open Studio Tour in October 2018. Participating artists open their studios to the public, meeting audiences and answering questions about their creative processes. Write Around Portland to hold two creative writing workshops, in partnership with social service agencies in Hillsboro. The workshops will culminate in the publication of participants’ writing in a professionally designed book and a community reading where participants will share their stories with audience members. Young Audiences of Oregon and SW Washington for artist residencies in Hillsboro’s McKinney Elementary School next year as a part of the artsintegrated literacy program.

ed Art Core Support Grants: The following organizations received core operating support grants to further their organizational missions this year. Bag&Baggage Productions is the only theatre company in the Pacific Northwest with a focus on producing major adaptations of classic dramatic literature. They remove barriers that often prevent students from experiencing live theatre through their PASSPORT program, which offers free tickets to all high school students from the fourcounty region comprised of Washington, Tillamook, Yamhill, and Columbia Counties. HART Theatre is in the business of providing quality community theatre and entertainment to Hillsboro residents and the surrounding areas. HART is also dedicated to providing educational opportunities, chances for community involvement through volunteer activity, and support for cultural diversity. Hillsboro Community Youth Choir has enriched the lives of young people in a nurturing atmosphere by teaching the joys of singing. Several age- and ability-based choirs are available for all young people with a desire to sing, learn, and perform. Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra provides an affordable and familyfriendly cultural experience in Washington County with three concerts per year. Formed in 2001 by a group of fewer than 30 amateur musicians, the Orchestra has grown to include over 70 members from a wide range of musical backgrounds. An all-volunteer organization, HSO has developed a long-range strategic plan to maintain the existence of the Orchestra for many years to come. Oregon Chorale is an adult choir based in Hillsboro that promotes beautiful, provocative choral music at the highest level while keeping concerts affordable, accessible, and fun for its audiences. Founded in 1985, the chorale supports local youth through its Emerging Voices program, music scholarships, and collaboration with local youth choirs. Sequoia Gallery + Studios is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting fine art. They offer a variety of programs and events that teach and display art; provide an environment for interaction and creative ideas; and provide opportunities for artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; exhibitions, outreach, and programs. Rood Bridge Park: An Unfolding Treasure Box Rood Bridge Park is a jewel in Hillsboro’s park system. The City’s largest park, it offers a rich variety of experiences: expansive meadows, scenic woods along the Tualatin River, beautiful stone picnic shelters, a playground with accessible restroom, a Monet-worthy water lily pond, and the Lloyd Baron Rhododendron Garden. Families at play, cross country runners, nature lovers, birders, walkers, and boaters are all rewarded by what the park has to offer. This summer, the experience of Rood Bridge Park will become richer still, with an improved boat launch site and a new public artwork. Artist Dann Nardi will build Elemental Sequence on the gently rolling lawn across from the tennis courts. Taking inspiration from the landscape, Nardi is creating a monumental concrete sculpture with upright pillars to frame the everchanging clouds and sky, and low, curving seating areas that hug the ground, evoking the flow of water in the park’s creeks and river.

Celebrate Rood Bridge Park this Summer

Join us to celebrate the new park additions at the following upcoming events:

Meet the Artist, Dann Nardi Sunday, July 15 | 1 – 3 pm

Rood Bridge Park Celebration of Art and Nature Saturday, August 25 | 11 am – 3 pm

During the months of June and July, Nardi and his small construction team will be working on site at Rood Bridge Park, assembling forms and casting concrete. In a unique, labor intensive process, Nardi will mix and pour delicately tinted concrete in small batches. This lends the surfaces of the resulting sculptures the subtle tones of dappled light. Frequent visitors to the park will have the pleasure of witnessing Nardi’s forms slowly rise from the earth. Rood Bridge Park is significant for its natural features, with the park’s southern boundary marked by the meandering Tualatin River while also housing the river’s confluence with Rock Creek. Rood Bridge is the terminus of the Tualatin River Water Trail, a 40 mile boat way along the peaceful, slow-moving river, starting at Willamette Park in West Linn and traveling through the Tualatin Valley’s farmlands and natural spaces. Despite the prominence of these waterways, putting a boat into the river at Rood Bridge has been a challenge. To make this great resource more accessible, the steep shores of the launch site have been improved, and a newly completed seasonal floating dock will further ease entry to the river. To celebrate these additions to the park, the public is invited to meet the artist, Dann Nardi, on Sunday, July 15, from 1 pm to 3 pm. In addition to the opportunity to talk with Nardi and view the scale model of Elemental Sequence, visitors can see the work in progress and participate in a family friendly, hands-on sculpture activity. Later in the summer, join us at the Rood Bridge Park Celebration of Art and Nature on Saturday, August 25, from 11 am to 3 pm. Celebrate the dedication of Elemental Sequence, enjoy art and nature activities for all ages throughout the park, and enjoy a free canoe ride sponsored in partnership with Tualatin Riverkeepers. Who was the “Rood” in Rood Bridge Park?

Rood Bridge Nears Its 20th Anniversary

The rolling green hills of Rood Bridge Park sit on the grounds of a former sewage treatment plant and a longtime family home. This signature park is the result of many partners working together. In 1992, the City bought 35 acres from the Dreiling family, adding land from the adjacent decomissioned wastewater plant and funds from a Metro bond. The Rotary Club sponsored the construction of River House for meetings and events, while the Hillsboro Community Foundation raised funds for the beautiful stone picnic shelters, and the park was opened in 1999.

Oregon Pioneer Louis A. Rood emigrated from Norway at the age of 13. After a few years in Wisconsin, he went to work in the gold mines of California, then on to Oregon, where he used his savings to buy land in southeast Hillsboro in 1869. He was elected County Judge in 1898, and, “was a self-educated man, and was widely read, although his opportunities for school in his boyhood days were not of the best. He was a prominent pioneer, a man universally beloved…of sterling characteristics.” Summarized from his obituary in the Hillsboro Argus, November 3, 1910. With thanks to local historian Judy Goldmann.

Mary Ordal, retired Project Manager with the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department, recounts the varied elements that make the park unique. The Lloyd Baron Rhododendron Garden features over 176 varieties of rhododendrons, Hillsboro’s official city flower, as well as native spring flowers and Pacific Dogwood. Distinctive species were gathered from as far away as the Canadian border to create this woodland display garden in 2001. In 2007, a graceful pavilion with waterfall was designed by Sadafumi Uchiyama, now Garden Curator at the Portland Japanese Garden. The many additions to the park over the years show us that as the park nears its 20th year, it continues to evolve and improve.

Creative Summer Family Outings When the leaden skies of late winter and spring finally clear to reveal a sky so blue a new crayon should be named in its honor, and the sun warms the air enough to coax neighbors into long evening conversations, it’s time to get out and explore summer community events. Hillsboro offers a wide range of outdoor concerts, festivals, plays, and films, as well as great classes to learn a new skill. Make a date for your family or friends to meet at one of the following events!

Hillsboro Farmers’ Markets

One of the longest running farmers’ markets in the Northwest, the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market was established in 1981 and has become a traditional community gathering place as well as a favorite venue for obtaining fresh, local products, culinary arts and crafts, live music, and educational information. Tuesday Night Market

Join the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market for their 20th season featuring the best local bands and musical entertainment; family activities; fresh locally grown produce, flowers, and plants; art and crafts from local artists and artisans; dining options from foods carts and local restauranteurs; and a classic car display. Showtime at Shute

Showtime at Shute is an outdoor summer concert series that has provided the Hillsboro community free, familyfriendly entertainment for more than 30 years. A culturally diverse event, Showtime at Shute brings neighbors together and contributes to the quality of life and pride in Hillsboro. Hillsboro Arts Summer Camp Showcase

Hillsboro Arts Summer Camp gives kids entering 6th grade through High School the chance to spend the summer developing their creative skills while studying with renowned musicians and arts educators. Meet Randi Hering-Soot “Thankfully, I had teachers who supported my interests and encouraged me. I will forever be indebted. — Randi Herring-Soot That simple act of affirmation set me on a path to explore the world artistically and to impact others in the same way. I truly feel that the encouragement I received in my youth set me free to think of myself in a positive and creative way.”

Beyond her training at PCC, Randi went on to take numerous workshops with noted ceramic artists, as well as workshops in glass fusing, lampworking, fiber arts, and other arts classes through the Oregon College of Art and Craft, Bullseye Glass, Mount Hood Community College, and Portland Art Museum, and she is currently pursuing a fine arts degree. “I have considered myself an artist since I was very young,” says Randi. “Thankfully, I had teachers who supported my interests and encouraged me. I will forever be indebted.

Randi’s family recently moved to a beautiful small acreage in Hillsboro. They had been searching for a new home that would offer a quiet retreat surrounded by nature and animals. “I draw inspiration and energy from spending time outdoors,” says Randi. “Aside from exploring new arts and crafts, I love to hike, garden, kayak, swim, fish, and cook.”

Walters Arts Education

Randi Hering-Soot’s first career was saving lives. She spent twenty five years serving as a paramedic before eventually retiring in order to devote herself to the care of her two young children and to her own self-care as an artist. “I had taken a beginning wheel throwing class at the Walters Cultural Arts Center from Jen Champlin and was hooked,” she says. Her shift away from the medical field allowed her to delve into this new passion; she spent two years in the ceramics program at Rock Creek PCC before acquiring a wheel and kiln of her own so that she could fully commit to her craft.

Though no longer a paramedic, Randi’s impact as a caregiver continues through her work as a volunteer and teaching artist. “Although I believe we are all born with artistic ability,” she says, “I meet people every day who are sure they are not artistic. People who don’t ‘get’ art. People who didn’t get the encouragement I received. I hope to change some minds and open those doors for as many people as I can.” Aside from teaching at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, she volunteers as an art instructor for the Hillsboro School District’s Online Academy and offers art activities at summer camps on request. Her specialty is sourcing unique materials and developing unexpected projects to delight, inspire, and empower her students. Her approach is gentle and experimental, coaxing students away from fear and into new experiences of joyful creativity. “It’s just art—” she jokes. “Nobody’s gonna die! (Honesty, I should know).”

Walters Arts Education

A time to work independently on personal projects in the clay studio and wheel room—with a plethora of tools and glazes at your disposal! Meet new people, explore new skills, and pursue your individual interests with this self-guided time in the studio. The Walters Cultural Arts Center provides this opportunity for current and previous students to allow them time, space, and resources to practice techniques, deepen their craft, and to encourage personal enrichment. Note: Youth under 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult at all times. Open Studio is open to students who have previously taken, or are currently enrolled in a Walters ceramics class, or who have received advance approval from an Open Studio Facilitator. Clay and Open Studio Guidelines brochure available at the Walters front desk. By signing up for Open Studio you are agreeing to the guidelines outlined in the brochure for studio use. Passes expire at the end of each term and are available for purchase at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. What Does Art Mean to Hillsboro? The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center

The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council

The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. In 2012, the HACC established the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation to create long-term stable funding for our creative community.

Hillsboro Public Art Program

Public art is a part of our mental map of Hillsboro, creating the memorable public places that strengthen our community. Art can attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, remind us of our history, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity. Public art can take many forms - landscape treatments, building facades, freestanding sculptures, murals, lighting and more. It can be permanent or temporary. Often, art is an unexpected discovery that lifts us out of the ordinary and brings a moment of intrigue and delight to our day.
