The Stolen Sweets

Oregon Mandolin Orchestra

Astor Piazzolla’s “Five Tango Sensations” are considered by some to be “a musical farewell to life” and were written in 1989 after Piazzolla experienced a grave illness. The instrumentation includes string quartet and bandoneon. Red Sneaker + bandoneon = AWESOME! Don’t miss out on a chance to dance to some live Piazzolla.

The Sweets deliver a unique brand of vintage acoustic jazz, dishing up abundant doses of coy stage antics and sideways glances as they play. This group is comprised of vocalists Jen Bernard, Lara Michell and Erin Sutherland and string syncopators Keith Brush, Pete Krebs, and David Langenes. Their ability to transport audiences to the early days of jazz has already earned them a sizable and colorful fan base in Portland and beyond.

The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra, in its second season, will perform Baroque favorites, classical Italian and Russian music, while guest artists will delve into an exciting set of swing and bluegrass music.

The local artists featured in Natural Tones work in wood, photography and mixed media. Marilyn Joyce focuses on the natural world and her work incorporates drawing, painting, printmaking and installationbased work. For David Reager, “the experience of making art is in itself the motive.” His assemblages represent “a subtle intimacy with nature.” Martin Conley is a finish carpenter by trade whose work reflects his love of sculpture, painting and custom furniture design. The work of these artists, many created in the natural tones of brown, beige, and ocher inspired the title of this wide-ranging exhibit.

The Harold Eastman Rose Garden is a serene triangular park located at the junction of 5th Avenue, Jackson School Road and Grant Street featuring a peaceful garden of more than ninety beautiful rose bushes. The garden is named after former Hillsboro resident Harold Eastman, who was the visionary behind the creation of the garden and whose hard work brought together the Tualatin Valley Rose Society, the Hillsboro Kiwanis, the Tualatin Valley Garden Club, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department to make the garden a reality. Today, the park is maintained by Hillsboro Parks & Recreation and the roses are tended by the Tualatin Valley Rose Society (the official park adopters). From late spring through fall, the community can visit and enjoy the blooms of over 40 varieties of roses, identified by labels provided by a grant from the Aloha Garden Club in 2007. The garden continues to evolve. The Tribute Corner, added in 2006, honors emergency responders and the military. A beautiful rose mosaic by Hillsboro artist Lynn Adamo will be installed this summer.
