Questioning Functionality 3 May 1 – June 26 Main Gallery

Walters Cultural Arts Center gallery supervisor Carl Annala created the exhibition series Questioning Functionality to support conceptual art coming from the intersection of craft and fine art. The works juried into the exhibit must suggest purpose without the intent of use, could still function, have fine art values and yet allude to a use beyond decoration. Viewers can expect to be confounded and delighted with improbable furniture, absurd garments and strange instruments. This will be the third Questioning Functionality exhibition at the Cultural Arts Center.

Related – Marinus Wolf and Linnie Brown Basement Gallery

Hillsboro’s father and daughter art duo Marinus Wolf and Linnie Brown show a series of conceptual paintings called Related. The self imposed rules of the project were to respond to a selected crossword clue/answer using the puzzle itself in the painting composition. The duo chose to use crossword puzzles as a starting point because they felt it would be a good bridging element between their painting styles. The geometric nature of the puzzles links the strong abstract designs Marinus uses with Linnie’s layering of manmade and natural imagery. Although the artists started each painting with the same group of words, their artwork developed differently and took on diverse meanings, demonstrating the complexity and ambiguity of language.

Instructors and Students of the Walters Cultural Arts Center July 3 – 24 Main Gallery

In July, the Cultural Arts Center will present an exhibition of fine arts and crafts by instructors and students throughout the whole building. This exhibit will feature paintings, drawings, sculpture, pottery, fiber arts and more. Featured artists include instructors Constance Adams, Bonnie Burbidge, Jennifer Champlin, Alice Hill, Jessica Gardner, Sue Anne Seckora, Gerald Sticka, Victoria Shaw, Rodolfo Serna and Guerry Dean. Some of the wonderful work created by Arts Center students – youth, teens and adults will also be on display.

Jeff Jurrens, Kim Lakin, Bradley McLemore August 7 – September 25 Main Gallery

Jeff Jurrens and Kim Lakin return to the Cultural Arts Center to exhibit abstract art, painting and fiber respectively. Jurrens’ abstract expressionist paintings are large, colorful and rich with textural interest due to his liberal use of paint applied with a squeegee. His new work incorporates geometric shapes, which are ironically similar to Kim Lakin’s fiber art. Lakin’s fiber art, although assembled using quilting techniques, looks much like abstract painting and minimalist painting. Ceramic sculptor Bradley McLemore’s artwork is similarly geometric with references to objects and structures that only imply usefulness.

Tom Jacquemin, Sandra Pearce Basement Gallery

Photographer Tom Jacquemin and watercolor painter Sandra Pearce both focus on landscapes as a vehicle to celebrate light and color.

Hondo Dog Park

4499 NW 229th Avenue Mixed-size area Small/timid dog area Lighted winter area Paved walkways Doggie drinking fountains Pet waste bag stations Off Street Parking

Hillsboro’s first ever off-leash dog park is open from dawn to dusk every day, except for Mondays and Thursdays when it will open from noon to dusk due to mowing and maintenance. The park is named in honor of Hillsboro Police K9 Dog Officer “Hondo,” who is the only Hillsboro Police K9 to lose his life in the line of duty. The park features a large mixed-size dog play area, a small/timid dog area and a special winter use area that can be enjoyed year-round. The winter area was recently lighted for winter evening use through generous donations by the Hillsboro Dog Association, community members and dog lovers. The design of the park is especially dog friendly with open grassy areas, trees for shade, dog drinking water stations, and two defunct fire hydrants painted and installed by volunteers. The park entrance also features a basalt column monument with a brass plaque commemorating Hondo. To play at Hondo Dog Park, dogs must display identification tags showing proof of current license and rabies vaccination and demonstrate appropriate social interaction. Owners must stay with their pets at all times and dispose of their pets’ waste appropriately. Register Online Anytime: www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/ParksRec
