Director’s Message

Director’s Message By definition, a partnership is an arrangement in which parties agree to cooperate to advance their mutual interests, but here at Hillsboro Parks & Recreation it is much more. It is a relationship built on mutual respect and admiration. We have more than 100 community and corporate partners whose extraordinary generosity makes it possible to provide the excellent services, programs and events we strive to create. Frontier Communications, Intel and Sonrise Church exemplify the meaning of partnership. Frontier Communications provides free Wi-Fi service at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex and sponsors a week of the Outpost at Shute Park. Through the Intel Involved employee volunteer program, Intel provides a steady stream of helping hands in our parks, at the Hillsboro Community Senior Center and at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, in addition to making a financial contribution to our youth programs. Dedicated members of Sonrise Church oversee the lunch service at The Outpost at Shute Park, and the Church provides property for one of our community gardens. Each partnership is unique and provides valuable support to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation. Another group of partners is our 26 Park Adopters who take responsibility for a specific park and help to keep it safe and clean. Many organize volunteer projects to plant trees and plants, remove invasive species, groom trails and much more. One of the wonderful things about this program is that anyone can be a Park Adopter – a family, service organization or a major corporation. The Blanton, Ewart and Sparks families are all valued Park Adopters, as are Kaiser Permanente and Intel. The common factor between them is their love of parks. Thank you to all of our partners.

Two Solo Shows

The Instructor Exhibit

These two solo exhibits share one thing in common: an exploration into how form and color can capture the essence of a place or person. Whether it’s the sweeping fields or swathes of sky in Stuart Allen Levy’s landscape photography, or the abstracted ribbons of color in Edyta Salak’s bold acrylic compositions, these two exhibits each highlight the exceptional talent and unique perspectives of local artists who render the world through the lens of their craft.

A teaching artist is a powerful hybrid, described famously as a “practicing professional artist with the complementary skills, curiosities and sensibilities of an educator.” By creating art themselves and passing on the practice to future generations, teaching artists contribute to the transformation and elevation of arts and culture as a whole. The annual Instructor Exhibit celebrates the artwork of the brilliant teaching artists who enrich the lives of this community through the many classes offered at the Walters year-round. From the breathtaking totems of ceramics instructor Victoria Shaw to the virtuosic wildlife scenes of acrylic painter Gerald Sticka, there is plenty to astound and inspire in this talent-packed exhibit!

May 6 – June 24

Stuart Allen Levy Photography—Upstairs Gallery

Stuart Allen Levy’s “Across the Boundary” series explores what lies beyond the urban growth boundary. His panoramic photographs of farmland, country roads, and broad blue skies make a visual ode to the pastoral landscapes of our region.

Edyta Salak Acrylic Paintings—Downstairs Gallery

In this series of paintings, called “Modern Moods,” Edyta Salak explores modern concepts of portrait and identity as she deconstructs her subjects using shape, color, and minimalist form to bring out the essential elements of their mood and personality.

Underneath it All: Collage by Amy Mintonye August 5 – September 30

Through collage and acrylics, artist Amy Mintonye weaves found images into scenes of totemic power, exploring the inner and outer forces that bear upon daily existence. From floods, gravity, and other natural forces, to systemic forces such as class inequality and alienation, Mintonye’s layered compositions unearth the patterns of struggle and resilience that define the human character. Uplifting in their beauty and symbolic nuance, these are works that remind us of art’s power to articulate the human drama and spirit.

Third Tuesday Spoken Word Lecture Series

Beyond Human? Science, Technology, and the Future of Human Nature

One on One with Oregon’s Sixth Trickster Tales from Far and Poet Laureate Near

Tuesday, June 17, 7 pm, Free

Join us in the Walters theatre for an intimate talk about all things Poetry with Paulann Petersen, Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate. Prepare to be inspired as Petersen discusses poignant experiences from her recent tenure as the Poet Laureate, and reads selected poems from her own works. Petersen has six full-length books of poetry, most recently Understory from Lost Horse Press. She was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, and received the 2006 Holbrook Award from Oregon Literary Arts. Bring your notebook in case inspiration strikes, and come early for a seat!

with Professor Prakash Chenjeri

Throughout history, religious scholars and philosophers have debated what makes humans unique in the animal kingdom. More recently, evolutionary biologists and cognitive scientists have contributed new thinking to our ideas about human nature. Has the essence of what it is to be human shifted over time? How might science and technology—such as recent rapid advances in bioengineering and other fields— challenge and reshape our understanding of what it means to be human? Prakash Chenjeri, an associate professor of philosophy at Southern Oregon University, leads participants in a thoughtful conversation about these questions and more. This program is made possible by the generous support of Oregon Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

willPower & grace™

Yoga – Gentle Flow

willpower & grace™ is a sweaty, dynamic fusion of the fitness industry’s most popular group exercise programs. This easy-to-follow, linear, strong and focused program is for students of all levels. Through cardiovascular barefoot training we develop ankle, knee and hip stabilization to facilitate good movement and prevent injury.

Open to all levels of practice and abilities, a soothing gentle class focuses on an exploration of basic yoga poses and how to connect them through attention to breathing, alignment and mindfulness. Therapeutic in nature, you learn techniques to help you gain flexibility, while immersing yourself in a relaxing class that moves at a perfectly slower pace – allowing ample time to enjoy each pose.

* Cardio Jam participants must wear wristbands, which are available at the front desk 15 minutes before class. 40 participants are allowed in each class. Monday

Yoga-Power

Using strong, flowing movement to create a heat-building mind body workout, Power Yoga is a sequence of postures that flow into one another, building strength, unwinding tight joints, and loosening muscles.
