New Watercraft Launch Opens On a hot summer day do you ever wish you were floating down a gentle river, listening to the birds sing, and hearing the occasional splash of a fish jumping? On Memorial Weekend it will be easier to make that wish come true – the new watercraft launch at Rood Bridge Park is reopening for all to enjoy. The original small boat ramp was too short to reach normal water levels leaving a steep, muddy strip of land to cross to get to the water, but that is no longer the case. Late last summer the boat ramp closed for a complete launch site renovation. The new concrete ramp was reconfigured and extends to the water level for easy access. A modular, floating dock will also be installed seasonally, making it easy for users of all abilities to enter Rood Bridge Park and exit watercraft.

Watercraft Launch

The Tualatin River’s calm • Non-Motorized Watercraft flow makes it one of • New Floating Dock Oregon’s most family• Easy Access friendly rivers, and a • Family Friendly perfect place for families and beginning paddlers. Opens Memorial Day Weekend The access point at Rood Bridge Park (river 4000 SE Rood Bridge Road mile 38.4) is the end of Hillsboro, OR 97123 the newly designated Tualatin River Trail. Conveniently located five miles downstream is Metro’s new Farmington Road access site. This nice little stretch of river is perfect for a short one-way adventure or a longer round-trip float. So, this summer, put a visit to Rood Bridge Park and its new watercraft launch on your calendar and spend the day enjoying the Tualatin River Trail. Special thanks to Metro and Oregon State Parks for their financial support of this project. We couldn’t have done it without them.

The Fuse & Vanishing Point

The Flora and Fauna of Jackson Bottom

Two solo shows capturing vanishing moments in time

June 5 – July 27

The Fuse: Portland Dance Portrait Project | Jinzgi Zhao April 3 – May 25 | Upstairs Gallery

These photographs take dancers off the stage and put them on the playground of everyday life. The dancers in the photographs are like actors in movies. They are the storytellers. By integrating movement with surroundings, the photographs invite the audience to experience a moment, place, or scene with a sense of drama and humor.

Joanna Carrabbio – Common Buckeye with Chicory Flower Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve—a 635-acre wetland along the Tualatin River—is a critical habitat for many species and an important migration stop for numerous types of birds. This exhibit presents the work of artists from the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. With the help and guidance of staff from Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, these artists have spent the past year illustrating the flora and fauna of Jackson Bottom in an effort to foster greater understanding and appreciation for this thriving natural resource.

Vanishing Point | Kate Ampersand

Walters

April 3 – May 25 | Downstairs Gallery

When the Boardman Tree Farm was sold to an agricultural company in 2016, the sale signaled the end of an iconic Eastern Oregon landmark: a man-made poplar forest running along a six-mile stretch of I-84. The architecturally unique tree farm is being replaced by a mega-dairy and crops—a dramatic and permanent change. This collection of photographs presents images created by the artist during visits to the tree farm over several years. These images have captured the trees in different seasons, using three different types of cameras. Rather than tracking the trees’ demise, the artist chose to record its beauty and memory before it disappears forever, memorializing its shapes, colors and moods for future generations.

People of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation:

Meet Valerie Otani

of the planning phase.

In an age of instant gratification, many people don’t realize how much planning is involved for thoughtful projects. Take Hillsboro’s ample public art scene; installation doesn’t merely come down to the creation of art by the artist, but it requires looking at the community as a gallery and carefully curating each piece. Considerations of relevance, longevity vs. interactivity, and location are crucial elements

Valerie Otani is no stranger to the entire process, being both an artist and the City of Hillsboro’s Public Arts Program Supervisor. Valerie’s contributions were even recently celebrated by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. She is a 2018 Juice Honoree, which awards “outstanding achievement in expression, support, and service in the arts and culture in the tri-county area.” “I’m an artist who has been doing public art for a long time— 30 years, or something like that. I came out to Hillsboro in 2008...to write the Public Art Master Plan,” says Valerie. “The Parks & Recreation Department and Arts and Culture Council decided that public art was important and they needed a solid plan to guide them.” The knowledge of Hillsboro that stemmed from creating the Master Plan informed Valerie’s inevitable role as Public Arts Program Supervisor (a role she has held since 2011), but she specifies that true success comes from collaboration with various neighborhoods to develop art that can speak to a variety of people, ages, and methods of interacting. The way individuals interact with art has evolved, and that needs to be reflected in the public art projects Hillsboro pursues. “I think overall the public art field has changed to strongly value interactivity. It used to be that, when commissioning an artwork, you would think, ‘This has to be a bronze sculpture that is going to last for 200 years.’ Many public art programs, which are over 25-years-old, are finding pieces they once commissioned require a lot of maintenance and people aren’t as attached to them as they initially were,” she says. While speaking of interactive works in Hillsboro, Valerie references the Patrick Dougherty Head Over Heels sculpture

in Orenco Woods Nature Park. Even though these stick works will only last 2 – 4 years, residents feel a connection to them; people touch them, play in them, and take pictures with them. The creation of memories that stem from commissioned public art is ultimately as valuable as the piece’s longevity. Though Valerie’s time is predominately spent advocating the work of other artists, she considers herself first and foremost an artist. Her personal passion focuses on creating works that can live and tell a story. One of Valerie’s artistic points of pride is Voices of Remembrance—a sculpture that uses 3,500 identification tags representing the Japanese-Americans who were interned at the Portland Expo Center during World War II. A Japanese-American herself, Valerie is deeply interested in the history of immigrant communities of the Portland metro area, and she feels Voices of Remembrance is a way to honor this rich culture while educating new generations. In addition to her work as an artist, Valerie is a founding member and board member of Portland Taiko, which is an Asian-American drum ensemble. She rehearses twice a week and performs regularly with the group. When she’s not advocating for public art, creating her own renowned works, performing taiko, or interacting with the Japanese-American community, Valerie spends time with family. “I’m really lucky that my close family all lives right here in the Portland area. My dad is 105 and still amazingly sharp and healthy...and [mine and my husband’s] first grandchild was born just two weeks ago,” Valerie says with a grin. She believes that the secret to a long life is social interactivity, curiosity, a desire to learn, and an interest in your community. With all of the contributions Valerie has made—and continues to make—in Hillsboro’s public art realm and the overall community, she is the embodiment of these values. It will be exciting to see what she is producing at 105! Clockwise from top left: Valerie on a speaker’s panel, consulting with the artist at Jerry Willey Plaza, discussing options at an art selection meeting, consulting with an artist on a project at the Walters, organizing supplies for the Stickworks sculpture.
