Director’s Message

Director’s Message This winter and spring, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation warmly welcomes you to experience our wide range of offerings for you to play, learn and grow. We offer nearly 30 parks and opportunities to explore exercise, wellness, art, cooking, gardening, volunteerism, nature and so much more. After school programs for Hillsboro’s youth and sports programs for every age are also available. Join us! We are also pleased to share a couple of new, exciting things with you: • Effective December 1, 2011, The City of Hillsboro and Metro purchased the former Orenco Woods Golf Course property in the central/Orenco area of Hillsboro for a future nature park for the community. This was one of the last large open spaces left in Hillsboro, and we are delighted that it will be preserved for the public for outdoor recreation and nature discovery. • As of January 1, 2012, our department will begin operation of the Hillsboro Senior Center. While we will continue to partner with the non-profit organization, the Supporters of the Community Senior Center of Hillsboro, the programming provided at the Center are now managed by the department. We look forward to maintaining & expanding the great programs to serve our senior community. Let us help you get out there and find nature, inspiration, culture and adventure!

Steve Greagor, Director

Landscape Now II

Anna Daedalus and Michael McDevitt

Allen Greene, Gretha Lindwood, Rob Rammage, Douglas Remington and Robert Weller

Mystery and mirth are focal points for the artists of our exhibit this February and March. Anna Daedalus’s photographs and Michael McDevitt’s paintings, on display in the main gallery, are evocative of stories familiar and yet strange. Anna’s photos read like movie stills and are performative allegories referring to medieval and renaissance painting, recalling folk tales. Her interest in creating images lies in the dichotomy of nature and culture. Michael McDevitt concerns himself with the moment of choice as the crux of tragedy and comedy in his theater of Americana – narrative painting. “At once humorous and sincere (my art) asks the viewer to reconsider their own decisions while laughing at the absurdity of choice itself,” says McDevitt.

December 6, 2011 – January 31, 2012 Main Gallery

Landscape Now II was created to feature the finest landscape art as submitted by area artists. This exhibit features impressionistic and realistic interpretations of local vistas in watercolor, pastel, oils and photographs.

Tualatin Valley Views Westside Quilters Guild

The Westside Quilters Guild presents a selection of quilts from its annual group show West Along the Tualatin. This group of quilts examines the landscape and content of the Tualatin River Valley, both natural and manmade. Traditional as well as non-traditional quilting techniques are employed to capture the essence of the valley’s diverse flora and manufactured features. While all of these pieces were created by guild members, many were designed for the 2011 Guild Challenge.

Nikki Dilbeck and Lorraine Richie Basement Gallery

In our basement space, the colorful abstract paintings by Nikki Dilbeck contrast with the black and white photographs by Lorraine Richey. Dilbeck has exhibited at WCAC in the past. We are excited to show her abstract expressionist paintings which radiate emotion through her use of color. Richey’s images of landscapes and flora and her portraits have a dark, rich quality that come from years of experience with film, although she now shoots digitally.

HYAC 7: Hillsboro Student Art Exhibit

Questioning Functionality 3

April 3 – 24, 2012 Both Galleries

A juried exhibition May 1 - June 26, 2012 Main Gallery

Revel in the young talent of Hillsboro as the Cultural Arts Center and the Mayor’s Hillsboro Youth Advisory Council present the eighth annual Youth Art Exhibition. The exhibition is the result of an art contest open to all Hillsboro area high school age youth working in 2D and 3D media as well as photography.

First Tuesday Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony

The exhibition series Questioning Functionality supports conceptual art coming from the intersection of craft and fine art. The works suggest purpose without the intent of use, can still function, have fine art values and yet allude to a use beyond decoration. Viewers can expect to be confounded and delighted with improbable furniture, absurd garments and strange instruments. This is the third Questioning Functionality exhibition at the Cultural Arts Center.

Related – Marinus Wolf and Linnie Brown Basement Gallery

Hillsboro’s father and daughter art duo Marinus Wolf and Linnie Brown shows a series of conceptual paintings called Related. The self imposed rules of the project were to respond to a selected crossword clue/answer using the puzzle itself in the painting composition. The duo chose to use crossword puzzles as a starting point because they felt it would be a good bridging element between their painting styles. The geometric nature of the puzzles links the strong abstract designs Marinus uses with the layering of manmade and natural imagery that Linnie employs. Although the artists started each painting with the same group of words, their paintings developed differently and took on diverse meanings. This process demonstrates the complexity and ambiguity of language.

Spoken Word

with Caroline Kim January 17 7:00 pm

Caroline Kim, Senior Development Associate at the Portland Art Museum (PAM), discusses the Mark Rothko, No. 14, 1951, exciting new exhibit by artist Mark Oil on canvas, Copyright Rothko, which is on display at the 1998 Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko PAM starting in February. Rothko lived in Portland during his adolescence, and graduated from Lincoln High School. The exhibit explores Rothko’s development as an artist, as well as his influences, tracing his movement from impressionist landscapes to surreal canvases to the abstract explorations of color and shape for which he’s best known. Ms. Kim’s talk represents a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of the most highly-regarded painters of the 20th Century. Sponsored by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council.

Oregon storyteller Leslie Slape has been widely lauded as a master of the narrative art. She draws her repertoire from many different directions, including her work as a journalist, her lifelong interest in folklore, her considerable imagination and her own family heritage as a descendent of immigrants. Tonight’s presentation, “The Feather of the Firebird,” honors her paternal grandfather, who was born in Russia. Come join us as Ms. Slape brings history and folklore alive through the power of story.

From Greek myth to the Mann Gulch fire, from Kipling to Julian of Norwich, Foster will bring history and literature alive with enthusiasm, conviction, and wit. Many of us have coped with the loss of a pet, but have feared that our loss is trivialized if we air our grief in public. Enid Traisman knows better. A social worker and certified grief counselor, Ms. Traisman has run the Pet Loss Support program at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital for the last 23 years. In Ms. Traisman’s popular support groups, those who have lost or are anticipating the loss of a pet are able to share, laugh, cry, and remember together. Ms. Traisman is also a fused glass artist who uses art therapy in the healing process. Tonight, in addition to giving a talk about her work with pet loss, Ms. Traisman leads a hands-on art activity for audience members to celebrate and remember their beloved pets. Central & Rosebay Parks 6200 NE Brighton Dr. & 1650 NE 65th Ave.

Central • 1.1 Acres • Gazebo • Pavillion Rosebay • 2.45 acres • Half-sized basketball court • Picnic tables with barbeques • Playground • Volleyball area • Fire pit

These two Hillsboro parks are tucked into the Orenco Station neighborhood just off of Cornell Road. Central Park was named for its central location just north of the Orenco Station retail area. Surrounded by homes, it is serene and lovely with its pair of classically-styled pavilions capping a large lawn. Walkers and picnickers are commonly seen enjoying the park, and it is also often the site of weddings and gatherings. It also features a large plaza, a pergola and benches. Rosebay Park is located on the eastern side of the neighborhood and welcomes visitors with basketball and volleyball courts, picnic areas with barbecues and a fire pit as well as a children’s playground. The parks were constructed in 1998 and 1999 by PacTrust Realty, Inc., as part of the development of the Orenco Station neighborhood. In 2000, the parks were donated to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation. Both are ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) award-winning parks designed by Walker Macy, one of Oregon’s most highly regarded landscape architectural firms.
