Director’s Message

Director’s Message Another year has passed and winter is upon us. Some of us bundle up and enjoy the beauty of our parks no matter the weather outside, and others enjoy the warmth of indoor activities during the cooler weather. Luckily, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation has something for everyone and in the future we want to provide even more. We are currently developing an Indoor Facilities Master Plan that will guide indoor recreation facility development over the next 20 years. The plan is expected to answer many questions, including what indoor facilities does the community need and what recreation programs can we add or expand if we had the space? Where should the facilities be located and how big should they be to meet the needs of our growing population? And of course, we need to identify the development and operating costs as well as how much revenue they could generate. We anticipate an opportunity for public input as we get farther in the planning process. While we know that we can’t possibly fulfill everyone’s wish list, we do know that the plan will be a road map for developing future indoor recreation facilities. The final plan is set to be completed in spring 2013. To help us develop the Indoor Facilities Master Plan, a contract was awarded to Opsis Architecture. Opsis is an experienced firm with a deep understanding of these types of projects and we are confident that the final plan will provide the information and guidance necessary to develop facilities that will be enjoyed by our entire community for years to come.

Wayne E. Gross, Interim Director

Rock Creek Trail Extension Since summer, crews have been working hard to extend the scenic Rock Creek Trail an additional two-thirds of a mile from Orchard Park to NW Wilkins Street. The 10’ wide trail is designed in accordance with federal standards for accessibility, as well as pedestrian and bicycle safety. The majority of the trail will be asphalt, with one bridge crossing over the creek and a connecting boardwalk. The extension is being funded with help from a $1.275 million federal grant. In a second project, Washington County has installed a fully signalized crosswalk where Rock Creek Trail intersects Evergreen Parkway, between Aloclek Drive and John Olsen Avenue. The crosswalk will provide a safer pedestrian and bicycle crossing for trail users. This fully accessible project is funded through the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Program. Hillsboro Parks & Recreation will host a celebration in the spring of 2013 when the Rock Creek Trail extension opens to the public. We look forward to seeing you there!

To enrich the lives of captive animals, many zoos encourage them to create art. Animal behaviorist Rosemary Lombard shares some examples of animals making art, discusses the role of their human teachers, and introduces the audience to the turtle artists from her own lab. How do/should we judge animal art? What can we learn from these activities about motivation, creativity and enrichment of animal lives? How does art help us understand the interests and mental abilities of animals? What do such accomplishments tell us about our relationships with other species?

For the fifth year in a row, the Walters Cultural Arts Center is pleased to be a part of the Art of the Story (formerly Hearing Voices) Festival through Washington County Cooperative Library Services. Patrick Ball is one of the premier Celtic harp players in the world and a captivating spoken word artist. In playing the ancient, legendary brass-strung harp of Ireland with its crystalline, bell-like voice, and in performing marvelous tales of wit and enchantment, he not only brings new life to two cherished traditions, but blends them in concert to create an unforgettable performance.

Spoken Word

The Olympic Games have become the world’s biggest sports extravaganza, where the best athletes come together to compete on the global stage. The Olympics have also become a massive media and marketing event, a global celebration of sport that’s swimming in corporate cash. In recent years, the Olympics have not only generated fans—the London 2012 Games were the most-watched event in US television history—but also created numerous critics. In this talk, Pacific University Associate Professor of Political Science Jules Boykoff explains why activists have questioned the Games. Focusing on the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2012 Summer Games in London, Boykoff explores what the Olympics tell us about sports, activism and global capitalism. Boykoff has published widely on the topic, and also represented the US Olympic Soccer Team in international competition.

The Jazz Scene as Ecology

From 1942 to 1947, the bracero program brought migrant laborers from Mexico to work on farms in the United States during the labor shortages of the Second World War. In this Spoken Word presentation from the Washington County Museum, Outreach Educator Ilene O’Malley discusses this important chapter in our nation’s—and our state’s—history. Understanding the bracero program helps us understand the Oregon of today as a place whose economy and culture owes much to Mexican Americans. Ms. O’Malley holds a Ph.D. in Mexican history, and also worked as an attorney specializing in migrant farm labor for 15 years.

For decades, Portland has been home to a vibrant musical community with more than its share of creative artists. But what makes a healthy jazz scene? What are the necessary ingredients? Can we come up with the answers by considering what makes a healthy ecology? While we necessarily focus on the basics of our survival— food, clean air and water, livable land—how do we value the culture that gives our lives meaning? In the ongoing dialogue about sustainable environment, sustainable development, sustainable economic growth, where might something like music fit in? Plato said about music that it is “a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything.” Is music as we know it sustainable? What, among its many traditions, institutions, practices and works do we want to save?

Winter/Spring Gallery Season

Full Nelson: A Family Affair with Art

Our winter/spring gallery season begins Tuesday, February 5th with our First Tuesday reception, house concert and catering by Claeys Catering. Check our gallery web page at www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/wcac for updates to our exhibition schedule. We are looking forward to an exciting and varied 2013 exhibition season!

December 4 - January 29 Dell Nelson, Larry Nelson, Debra Nelson, Loren Nelson and Christopher Nelson

It’s a family affair this holiday season at the Arts Center! Larry Nelson introduced himself to the Arts Center as an exhibitor in our “Questioning Functionality” exhibits, with his fantastic trompe l’oeil ceramics that take on the form of metal piping and other industrial objects—but are actually functional tea pots and cups. Upon learning that many members of Larry’s family are accomplished artists as well, the Arts Center curator simply had to book a Nelson-centric show. Larry’s father, Dell, draws immaculate renderings of crumbling buildings in charcoal. Larry’s wife, Debra, is a ceramicist, creating lamps inspired by organic forms. Loren Nelson, Larry’s brother, is a photographer observing details of flora often overlooked. The youngest member of this family exhibition is Christopher Nelson, whose whimsical works include a little social criticism. Three generations of Nelsons are featured throughout the whole building, main gallery and basement space.

Acquired by the City in 1964, this 1.79 acre park was named after longtime Hillsboro resident and noted newspaperwoman Emma McKinney. Mrs. McKinney began her newspaper career in the early 1900s and eventually became the owner/editor of the Hillsboro Argus. During her tenure there, the Argus won multiple awards for everything from production to general excellence to editorials and best weekly newspaper in the US for its size. In 1954 Mrs. McKinney was named Dean of Oregon Newspaper Men and Women. Both Emma and her son Verne were inducted into the Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1981, followed in 2002 by her grandson Walter. The Emma C. McKinney Memorial Award has been awarded annually by the National Newspaper Association since 1966.
