New Grant Opportunities for Local Arts Groups Tensions ran high for Glencoe High student Alexandria Morgan as she waited in the wings for her first performance in a professional acting company on the stage of Hillsboro’s Venetian Theatre last September. Alexandria played Tituba in Bag&Baggage’s dynamic production of The Crucible and received rave reviews from Artistic Director Scott Palmer. Bag&Baggage Productions is known for Palmer’s creative takes on the classics, but it also took a creative leap in its casting of The Crucible by working with Hillsboro’s high schools to include promising young talent in their professional cast and technical crew. Student actor Madeline Ogden said, “I cannot begin to describe what an incredible experience this was…..taking a bow at the end of every performance was the best feeling in the world! “ It was all part of their Professional Youth Development Project which provided 12 students the opportunity for paid work with B&B’s professional actors and production staff this past summer. The program was funded in part by a Community Arts and Culture Grant. The goals of this annual grants funding, administered by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC), are to raise awareness and expand arts and culture programming that serves Hillsboro

residents, foster collaboration between community members, and provide access to arts and culture experiences for those who are underserved. Since 2008, the HACC has provided these Community Arts and Culture Grants as a way to support organizations that provide arts and culture experiences to the greater Hillsboro community. In the past seven years, the HACC has awarded a total of 72 grants totaling $162,769. This year, the Arts Council voted to expand the Hillsboro Community Arts & Culture Grants program by offering core operating support as well as project grants. Grant applications are being accepted from January 2 – March 27, 2015. To download a copy of the HACC’s new grant guidelines and application form, visit www.hillsboroarts.org. MILLER EDUCATION STUDENTS CREATE GARDEN GATES Students in Bill Patten’s art class at Miller Education Center were intently focused on the tiny scissors in their hands, cutting out paper silhouettes of lush leaves, fruits, vegetables and tiny roots. Mary Venegas’ voice is equal parts defiance and pride as she looked up from her cutting. “People don’t think we can do anything because we are in an alternative school. We’ll show them!” When Hillsboro Parks & Recreation’s Community Garden Program and the Hillsboro School District decided to create a community garden on the grounds of Miller Education Center, the Hillsboro Public Art Program offered to involve Suzanne Lee as an artist-in-residence to work with Miller Education Center students in the design of entrance gates to the new garden. Principal Stan Esselstrom welcomed the opportunity to connect students to the garden in their own backyard and engage them in their community. Lee worked with these students over four months. At first, many had not thought much about plants, what they looked like, or how they grew. She encouraged them to look at plants more closely, draw them, and then simplify the drawings to black and

white silhouettes. Back in her studio, Lee arranged the shapes that the students had so carefully cut with an artful and practical eye. The art comes from Lee’s years of experience in textile design and public art. The practicality is needed to meet all the safety standards for fencing, where the openings cannot trap a head or pinch a finger. When Lee brought the designs back to the students, it was clear that their original skepticism about the project had given way to excitement as they envisioned their artwork laser cut into gleaming stainless steel. Their choice of a title for the artwork, Get Down With da Dirt, reflected their youthful , hip-hop spirit. Lee was the perfect choice to lead the project. Her gates to the community garden at New Columbia, a housing community in North Portland, feature proverbs and plants from around the world, reflecting the diverse cultures of the families who live there. For many years, Lee has been an artist-in-residence in schools in Oregon and Washington, often helping students to create silkscreened banners for their school. Her public art projects are growing in scale and prominence with two lighted towers featuring the history of St. Helens, Oregon, and a camas

“Just like the seeds planted in this garden flourish as full grown plants, these students were able to see their ideas grow from little seeds of thoughts and images to a full scale permanent public art installation.” – Artist Suzanne Lee basket sculpture recently installed on I-5 as it crosses the Willamette River in Eugene. Community Garden Manager Lori Prince sees the gates as “a great way to welcome people to the garden and create a gathering place for educational activities.” Neighbors of the garden viewed the new gates with approval as well. “Our neighborhood doesn’t get much attention. We really need something like this.” Public Art Program Supervisor Valerie Otani would like projects such as these to create landmarks, both large and small, to give a distinctive character to the city. The sparkling gates with their intricate and beautiful forms will celebrate the partnership of a talented artist, engaged students, schools, parks and public art to create a memorable community gateway for years to come.

A Focus on the Future: The Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment Walt Disney said “If you can dream it, you can do it.” It was this spirit that in 2004 made the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center a reality – the product of collective imagination and a community master planning effort known as Hillsboro 2020. Another mandate of the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan was the creation of the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council (HACC), a Mayor appointed volunteer board that informs the City’s work to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as part of building a vibrant community. The HACC assumed leadership of more than a dozen Hillsboro 2020 action items including building long-term stable funding for arts and The beauty of the Hillsboro culture in Hillsboro. The HACC dreamed of an Arts Arts and Culture and Culture Endowment, Endowment is that it has and we all achieved it!

One woman celebrating her 90th birthday learned about the Arts and Culture Endowment and asked friends and family to make contributions in lieu of presents. “That very gracious gesture resulted in many small gifts totaling over $1,000. Every $1,000 in the Endowment generates about $50 in support of arts and culture every year forever!” explains Carol Loughner, Chair of the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council. “When we told our birthday girl, she beamed with pride about the staying power of her small expression of arts support.”

Another way Legacy Society members Marilynn and Ralph Helzerman people are supporting the Endowment is by making provisions in their wills, which prompted the creation of a Legacy Society to thank and recognize the generous forethought of these donors. Bequests are a simple way to support the causes you care about with a legacy gift.

In just two years the Arts and Culture Endowment has more than tripled in size to $85,000 and has had a catalytic impact. Endowments at HCF are all growing because of a unique partnership with the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) that enables funds to be invested with OCF’s pool of over $1.4 billion, providing for optimum management and return. About half of the returns are reinvested in the Endowments with the balance available for annual distribution.

People support the arts in many ways – as patrons, volunteers and as donors. The Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment is just another way for people to support the arts, one that is focused on the future. Tax deductible charitable contributions to the Arts and Culture Endowment are invited and appreciated.

Launched in October 2012 as the first endowment set up by Hillsboro Community Foundation (HCF), the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Endowment was started with $25,000 in large and small contributions from 38 people who wanted to support community arts and also wanted their contributions to have a lasting impact. The beauty of this Endowment is that it has and will continue to bring people together in support of something they value in the community.

New and repeat contributions are also helping to grow the Arts and Culture Endowment, and people of all means are getting creative about their support. All understand that the Endowment is taking a long view toward sustainability, something most arts and culture organizations are

Lynn Adamo and Rebecca Buchanan December 2 – January 26 Lynn Adamo and Rebecca Buchanan explore the meaning of home with a creative collaboration in their respective media: Adamo is a mosaic artist and Buchanan a visual artist working in acrylics, mixed media, and printmaking. Inspired by the artistic dialogue between contemporary mosaic artists and painters featured at the Municipal Art Museum of Ravenna, Italy, these dynamic local artists have joined creative forces in this colorful and contemporary collaboration of their own.

This collection of scrolls by Karen Swallow Karen Swallow explores the thematic symbol of the waterfall through the mediums of sumi ink, rice paper, beeswax encaustic, and calligraphy. This body of work reflects the significant influence of eastern aesthetics and philosophies that have come to bear on Swallow’s approach, while also representing the artist’s distinct personality and character. Swallow studied Chinese calligraphy for ten years in with Wang Gong Yi and has exhibited work in Korea, Vietnam, and China.

Through painstaking pointillism, Kelly Guthrie captures the tiny textures of insect life: from the fuzz of a bee to the vulnerable underside of a grasshopper. Guthrie’s drawings act as microscopic lenses, while her enlargements of the originals shine a light on the artistic process itself, and allow viewers to celebrate the medium as well as the tiny subjects to which Guthrie’s work pays homage.

Mediating between phytomorphology (botanical form), human control, and delimitative glitch, Willem’s images are manually composed through choreographed performances with a flatbed scanner. Willem stages hauntingly beautiful images of plant specimens as they are caught between physical and digital spaces, and asks us to contemplate the complex relationship between nature, technology, and ourselves.

Meet Jen Champlin

“I get so much energy from encouraging and engaging other people.” —Jen Champlin

Nearly eight years ago, ceramics instructor Jen Champlin and her family moved from Wyoming to Hillsboro. In their search for the perfect home, they followed leads on over thirty different houses— and ended up settling on one that’s only a few Photo by Rick Paulson Photography blocks from the Walters. Champlin remembers the real-estate agent mentioning the two-year-old arts center on Main Street—and she was sold. “Immediately after moving in,” says Champlin, “I walked right over to the Walters with my 6-month-old daughter on my hip, résumé in one hand, portfolio in the other, and I told my story.” Six months after stepping into the Walters for the first time, Champlin’s extensive teaching record, a Masters in Fine Arts, and artist’s portfolio landed her a lead role in its fledgling ceramics program. By then, Champlin was feeling the stars click into place. “Hillsboro had everything I wanted. There was this rich culture and diversity, a growing arts scene, and I had my family near me...it all just aligned.” Over the years Champlin has become fondly known for the colorful outfits, contagious enthusiasm and overall charismatic persona that fills her classrooms and spills over into the creative process. Students often ask for her by name when registering for her classes—and return again and again. “As an extrovert,” she says, “I get so much energy from encouraging and engaging other people. It doesn’t matter the age—84 or 8—I love to cheer on my students. I’m a natural-born cheerleader and always have been.” With this in mind, Champlin prefers a teaching style that empowers her students to tell their own stories and express their own passions, concerns, and causes. “I’m not going to stop at teaching them how to make a plain old vase,” she says. “I’m going to take it to the next level. Because I like to believe that everyone has a story to tell.” For example, the Narrative Vases project that was a hit with Champlin’s summer camp students “lets students give their own twist to their creations, their own meaning.” This approach is especially relevant to teen students for whom self-expression and creative exploration are particularly important. In her new, upcoming teen-focused classes at the Walters, Champlin hopes to create a unique environment that lends itself to the interests and independence of this age group. In addition to her work at the Walters, Champlin teaches 8th grade art classes for Oregon Connections Academy and is working on multimedia projects involving found objects. “I love to tell stories with old relics—I intertwine them in a way that is poetic, with the aim of drawing the viewer back again...and again, and again.”

Community Leader Advocates for Youth and the Arts As long time community volunteer Lynn Scheller prepared to step down from the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC), Community Arts Program Supervisor Melissa Moore sat down to talk with her about why she joined the HACC and what she looks forward to next. MM: Why did you join the HACC? LS:

I was getting ready to retire and still had a lot I wanted to do. My whole life I’ve gone back and forth between academics and performing arts (dance and theatre). So when I retired from a 38 year teaching career, I decided I wanted to work on three projects— one with youth, one with the arts, and one global project.

MM: So, what projects did you undertake? LS:

I joined the board of HomePlate to serve homeless youth, worked with the Women’s Economic Development Center in Tanzania, and the HACC to work with the arts. I am no longer on the board of HomePlate but am still a strong supporter of the excellent work they do for youth in our community.

MM: You’ve been an advocate for youth on the HACC as well—acting as a jury member of the annual Youth Art Exhibit at the Walters and an advocate for HACC support of the Right Brain Initiative in Hillsboro Schools. LS:

of funding for the arts, and the Hillsboro Community Foundation was charged with increasing local philanthropy. Together we created a framework for an endowment that serves the entire community. The Hillsboro Community Foundation now has five endowments supporting our community and our Arts and Culture Endowment has been funded and tripled in that time.

I’m proud of the work I’ve done with the Arts Council. The HACC has been the best board I’ve ever worked with--because it is so professional, but also creative. You let me work with both the left and right sides of my brain.

MM: What are the biggest changes you’ve seen in your six years on the HACC? LS:

The City support for the arts has always been there, but it has really grown over the past 6 years. That support can be seen in the development of the Public Art Program, the establishment of the Arts & Culture Endowment, and the increase in money for the HACC’s grant program. The Public Art Program is really a gift the City has given the community.

MM: What is the most important thing you’ve been involved with in your work on the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council? LS:

The Endowment. The HACC is charged in the 2020 Vision and Action Plan with finding a stable source

MM: What will you do when your term on the HACC ends? LS:

I will stay on the Endowment committee, which has always included non-HACC community members, to work for long term arts funding. And I’ll continue my work with the school and library foundations, as well as continuing to raise funds for the Women’s Economic Development Center in Africa, and of course, spend a lot of time being a grandma. Ultimately my heart is with youth and the arts because I see the power of the arts in our lives. In good times we celebrate with the arts, and with bad times the arts bring us together and give us hope.

Celebrate the Coming of Spring at the Holi Festival of Colors Clouds of color and the smell of spices float through the air as a mix of modern and traditional Indian music streams from the stage. The sea of faces in the crowd is covered with a rainbow of colors added by those celebrating the coming of spring at the annual Rang Barse – Holi Festival of Colors in Hillsboro. The festival, in its fourth year this spring, is organized by local Indian dance company, Bollywood Movez, and Amrapali Boutique. Approximately 1,000 people come from across the tri-county area to participate in the Hindu festival. Rang Barse can be translated as ‘the pouring of colors’ and that’s exactly what happens at the Holi Festival. Participants celebrate the beginning of spring and the end of winter with delicious food, singing, dancing, and of course joyful color play! Each festival goer receives two bags of organic colors that won’t irritate eyes or skin, and will wash off easily in the water fight at the end of the event. There is a separate section for water play and a section for dry colors. Additionally, for those that just want to watch the fun from a distance, there is a seating area. Nothing is mandatory and everyone finds new friends among the strangers!

Rang Barse organizer, Sushmita Poddar got the idea to bring Holi Festival to Hillsboro because she wanted to share a part of the Indian culture with the greater Portland community. Poddar said “This is one festival where it doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, where you come from. At the end of the day we are all just a riot of colors. All of us basically look alike at the end of it.” While the event is a traditional Hindu celebration, everyone is welcome. Holi Festival is a great representation of community – there are no barriers, whether you are family or a stranger, everyone is fair game. Even the volunteers have an exciting time! The History of Holi

According to Hindu legend there was a demon king named Hiranyakashyap who viewed himself as the king of the universe, however, his son was devoted to his rival Vishnu. Because of his disloyalty the demon king tried to kill his son several times, but every time Vishnu saved the boy. So, Hiranyakashyap turned to his evil sister, Holika, who was immune to fire. She tricked the boy to sit on her lap and engulfed him in flames, but Vishnu once again saved the boy. Holika then burned to ashes because she used her powers for evil. The legend sends the message that good always defeats evil. This tale is just one of the legends that creates the basis for one of the most colorful festivals in the world: Holi Festival. Traditionally, Holi Festival begins with a fire that burns all night, which is meant to represent the fire which destroyed Holika. The next day people gather to celebrate with water play and colored powders. The Holi Festival of Colors not only celebrates the victory of good over evil, but also the return of spring.

The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education. Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager. Hillsboro Public Art Program Public art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.
