Director’s Message

Director’s Message After a long winter, most everyone in Hillsboro is ready for sunshine and outdoor activities! We are here to help you make the most of your summer with more than 400 fun, active and inspirational opportunities for individuals, families, and people of all ages. Details of these activities are conveniently available online as well as in this guide, and you can register online 24/7. If you prefer, we are also available to take your registration over the phone or in person. Even with the long winter on top of a challenging economy, we have made some of our existing parks even better and have created new parks and opportunities for the community. More information about what we’re working on is always available on our website, but I want to share some highlights: • 53rd Avenue Park – the first 13 acres of this 43-acre community park site are now open and include two artificial turf multi-sport fields, a plaza area with water play fountains, a creative playground, lighted tennis and basketball courts, pathways, concessions, restrooms, and parking. Please join us on May 22 from 2-3:30 pm for a special and fun community dedication event at the park! • Bicentennial Park - this 4.4-acre park, originally opened in 1976, has undergone a major renovation including a new restroom, walkways, playground equipment and landscaping. Funding for these renovations was provided in part by federal grant funds and I am looking forward to having this park continue to serve the surrounding neighborhood for many years to come. • Shute Park – with help from grant funds, donations from the Tualatin Valley Garden Club and Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee, Hillsboro’s oldest park has undergone many improvements. The park now offers larger gathering spaces, a fire pit, more benches and new play equipment. Flower planters and pathways have also been added, and the shelter as well as drainage has been improved. • ASA Western National Championship – we are honored to be hosting this prestigious girls’ championship softball tournament on August 2-8, 2010 in partnership with the Washington County Visitors Association. This tournament takes place at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex/Hillsboro Stadium and highlights our first class facility and dedication to customer service. We hope you’ll come check out this exciting tournament in August! As always, we are grateful for the support from our City Council, Parks & Recreation Commission, Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council, and members of our community that allows us to help you explore nature, get inspired, discover your artistic side, and have fun adventures right in your own backyard. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

All Ages – Bird Classes

Jackson Bottom Bird Classes

Join bird expert Greg Gillson as he shares his enthusiasm and knowledge about birds at Jackson Bottom. Greg has extensive experience teaching about birds such as leading ocean birding boat trips, creating a web site: http://thebirdguide.com, volunteering for bird surveys and contributing to the 2003 book Birds of Oregon: A General Reference. Over 150 species of birds can be seen annually on the over four miles of hiking trails at the Preserve and nearly 200 different species of birds have been recorded overall. From these trails observers may see varied habitat areas and offer good views of birds and other wildlife. For more information on these classes or other bird watching opportunities, contact Greg at 503-681-6417 or visit us on the Web at www.jacksonbottom.org.

53rd Avenue Park 333 NE 53rd Avenue

• 13 acres developed (of 43 total) • Artificial turf multi-sport fields • Fountain/amphitheater • Children’s playground • Lighted tennis and basketball courts • Concession and restrooms • Off street parking

Hillsboro’s 53rd Avenue Park is a unique community park site located in the geographic center of the city. The entire 43-acre park was master planned with extensive community input, and when fully complete will include diverse active and passive outdoor areas, as well as an indoor recreation center. Currently the park features two artificial turf multi-sport fields, concessions, restroooms, four tennis and two basketball courts, a play water feature/fountain bordered by beautiful stone amphitheater-like seating, paths, a playground that offers a variety of creative play features, and picnic areas and parking. The park’s central location, convenient access and parking, and proximity to light rail make it easy for the community to come enjoy this special site. Construction of the initial 13 acres was aided by an Oregon State Parks Local Government Grant (Oregon Lottery funds) and funds from the Hillsboro Soccer Club and a USTA Pacific Northwest Grant.
