Having Fun On Hilton Head Having fun on Hilton Head Island, when you have time to visit, certainly is not difficult. We have listed some of the most popular ways to have fun. Some are pretty obvious, but we listed them anyway because they please so many people. We also have listed some appealing ways to have fun that might not have occurred to you. We hope that the following suggestions are helpful.

golf courses also are a wonderful place to walk just before dark, when golfers have finished their games for the day. Walking a golf course provides a different and very attractive perspective on Hilton Head that only can be imagined as you walk or drive along our streets. Most courses even have paved cart paths that make walking pleasant and easy. One word of caution: PLEASE do not walk our island’s golf courses when there may be golfers about. Doing so would interfere with the golfers’ enjoyment of their games and could be dangerous. Getting hit with a golf ball is no joke!

Take a Scenic Tour Obtain a copy of Hilton Head Island Vacation Guide, and follow its suggested driving tour, which will show you much of what makes Hilton Head one of America’s premier destination resorts. The tour includes beaches, golf courses, our famous Harbour Town, the New England-style South Beach Village, Shelter Cove Harbour, sea marshes, lagoons, selected hotels, some residential neighborhoods, and much more. Where the tour involves going behind the gates of several private plantations (entry may be gained if you are going to selected locations), please be sure to stay on the suggested route. Take a Guided Beach Walk Explore the fascinating Hilton Head Island seashore, dunes and tidal marshes. Learn about the plants and animals of the Atlantic Ocean. Buy a Work of Art Visit Hilton Head’s numerous art galleries, and find that perfect work of art to remind you of your time on the Island.

Qualify For “Free” Golf or “Free” Dinners

Go to the Beach More people come to Hilton Head for its 12 miles of broad beach than for any other reason. Our beaches offer sunning, swimming, walking, shelling, people-watching, and just plain relaxing. Best of all, they are free! Note, however: Beaches are public, but beach access often is not. Please refer to the “Going to the Beach” article in Hilton Head Island Vacation Guide to locate the beach that would be best for you.

Many of Hilton Head’s shared ownership properties are so confident in their appeal that they offer free golf, dinner for two or other incentives for visitors who will just look and listen. Even if you decide that timeshares, quarter shares, etc., are not for you, most of the sales people are very knowledgeable about Hilton Head, so looking and listening generally is very interesting.

Watch Free Tennis Exhibitions

Hilton Head offers excellent live theater entertainment at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Surroundings are intimate enough that you will be reasonably close to the performers regardless of where you sit, and the performances are very professional. Please call 842-ARTS for more information.

Enjoy a Theater Production

Tennis is an excellent spectator sport. Many of our local racquet clubs are designed with grandstands and/or clubhouse porches for watching others play. Several clubs have free evening professional exhibitions once a week for much of the year. Go for a Walk, Hilton Head Style Hilton Head genuinely is a walker’s paradise. Perhaps the single most popular place is the beach. However, there also are many lightly traveled roads and a large network of bike paths (see “Bicycling on Hilton Head” section of Hilton Head Island Vacation Guide) that allow one to get some pleasant exercise and see our island at the same time. Many diners enjoy having wine with their meals. We have described some of the more popular wines served in our area. Most popular wines are named for the type of grape used to make them, or for the geographic area in which they are made. WHITE WINES

SAUVIGNON BLANC

CHARDONNAY

This is an extremely aromatic grape with distinctive flavors of herbs, grass, bell peppers and occasionally, olives. At times it can also carry somewhat smoky undertones. Also labeled Fume Blanc in California, this is an important white grape in France, where it is blended with Sémillon to produce all of Bordeaux’s white wines—from dry Graves to sweet dessert wines of Sauternes. It is also the grape of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in the eastern Loire Valley.

Chardonnay produces a superb wine that is rich, complex and well-balanced. It takes nicely to judicious aging in oak barrels, a practice that gives a pleasurable “toastiness” to the wine. It has a distinctive aroma sometimes resembling hazelnuts, vanilla or acacia. The most noble grape in the world for dry white wine, the Chardonnay is responsible for all of the great white Burgundies—Meursault, Montrachet, Pouilly-Fuissé and Chablis among them. It is one of the grapes used in Brut Champagne and the only grape used to make blanc de blancs Champagne.

RED WINES CABERNET SAUVIGNON

CHENIN BLANC

A grape of great character, the Cabernet Sauvignon produces elegant wines with austere flavors often reminiscent of tea or olive leaves, currants or herbs. It tends to be tannic in its youth, to mature slowly and to live long. This superb and noble red grape is largely responsible for the great clarets of Bordeaux, particularly those of the Médoc and Graves areas.

A grape capable of making wines that range from bone dry to very sweet. Chenin blanc retains through all its versions a well-defined fruitiness, often suggestive of pear. Its high degree of acidity gives it a pleasant crispness. As a sweet wine in Vouvray, it can live a long life. In California, it tends to be at its best at an early age. The major white grape of the middle Loire Valley, Chenin blanc produces Vouvray and other white wines of Touraine and most of the white wines of Anjou. It is also known in France as Pineau de la Loire.

MERLOT Similar in flavor to Cabernet Sauvignon but softer and fleshier, the Merlot also tend to be less tannic. The Merlot will mature sooner than a Cabernet Sauvignon. A distinguished red grape of Bordeaux, Merlot is softer blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc and Graves regions, to give softness and grace to the more austere Cabernet. In the Pomerol and St. Emilion areas of Bordeaux, it is the main grape producing a rich, silky wine.

GEWÜRZTRAMINER This white grape yields a pungent, spicy wine with hints of strong floral aromas such as those of dried rose petals. It is made as a dry, off dry, sweet and very sweet wine. In all versions, Gewürztraminer leaves a nip of bitterness in its aftertaste. An important grape in France’s Alsace region, Gewürztraminer is also grown in small amounts in Germany.

PINOT NOIR The best Pinot noirs are wines of incomparable depth and harmony. Their aromas have been described as reminiscent of violets, cherries, leather, peppermint and truffles, while their textures have been likened to satin and velvet. One of the world’s greatest grapes, the Pinot noir produces the glorious red wine of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, as well as all other red Burgundies, which are made solely of Pinot noir. It is also the leading grape of the Champagne region.

PINOT GRIS Pinot gris makes a full-bodied, study white wine that is often a bit low in acidity. It has an assertive, rather spicy aroma. In the United States, Pinot gris is grown commercially only in Oregon. In France, it grows in Alsace where, until recently, it was labeled Tokay d’Alsace. Now under a new French law, it is called Pinot gris or Tokay Pinot Gris. The grape also grows in Germany where it is known as Ruländer and in northern Italy where it is named Pinot grigio.

SYRAH Syrah grows in France’s Côtes du Rhône region, where it is the exclusive grape of red Hermitage, the major grape of CôteRôtie, and one of the grapes used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Syrah makes a deep-colored wine that is rough and highly tannic and peppery in its youth, but which can mature to a big, generously velvety wine. It is generally long-lived.

PINOT BLANC Pinot blanc is closely related in taste and aroma to Chardonnay, although subtler, usually firmer and slightly more tart. This grape is grown mostly in Alsace and in southern Germany where is known as the Weissburgunder.

ZINFANDEL The most widely planted red grape in California, Zinfandel is extremely versatile. All styles of wine have been made from it, from fruity young wines to fine table wines, heavy port-like wines and the currently popular blush wines. In any disguise, its basic raspberry-like flavor usually shines through.

RIESLING Riesling is capable of producing wines with an extraordinary balance of sweetness and acidity. It has an aroma of fresh flowers in youth and a more subtle perfume in maturity. Riesling can be dry or it can produce some of the world’s greatest naturally sweet wines, strong in apricot and peach-like perfumes and as rich as nectar. The finest grape of Germany, Riesling also flourishes in Alsace and in Austria.

Numerous new restaurants have recently opened in the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton area. We have described several of them here. Additional relatively new restaurants are listed and described on our web site, hhidining.com. Our website also has information about additional matters of interest concerning dining on Hilton Head. Please note that, although we believe the material throughout Bluffton & Lowcountry Restaurants Magazine to be accurate, we rely on the owners of restaurants for much of it. ANNIE O’S SOUTHERN EATS Longtime island resident and chef Tom Egerton has opened his first restaurant, Annie-O’s Southern Eats. After 10 years with Crane’s Tavern and most recently Muse restaurant in Charleston, Tom has returned to the island and opened his southern-style eatery, featuring his take on southern classics and comfort foods like meatloaf and gravy, buttermilk fried chicken, and new takes on shrimp salad and eggrolls, along with family favorites like Susie’s Potatoes. Other favorites are the chicken biscuit, fried catfish, crab cake club, spinach salad, burger and wings. All desserts are homemade and include treats like coconut cream pie to round out the deliciousness. The down-home decor here includes galvanized buckets turned into light fixtures, a curved wooden bar that invites customers to get comfortable, and cloth-covered tables that extend a hospitable southern welcome to diners. The restaurant is named after Tom’s mother, Anne. He thought it fitting to recognize the person responsible for sparking his interest in cooking through her formidable talents in the kitchen. Annie-O’s features all homemade, from-scratch dishes in a casual setting that will leave you satisfied and won’t break the bank. It offers a kids menu, dine-in and take-out options, and also has a full bar. With that introduction, island diners discovered a cool new place with casual, elegant dining inside as well as outside on a patio with a bar. The culinary team presents a special tapas menu from 6-11 p.m. that includes such temptations as lamb lollipops, roast duck tacos, tempura local softshell crab, brown buttered seared gnocchi and several desserts. The restaurant offers full-service lunch and dinner and promises “great food, unique dishes, great prices.” While the star attraction is the food, The Big Chill — as its name suggests — also helps you cool off with fresh fruit daiquiris and a full-service bar. They even sell gallon daiquiris to go! Live music rounds out the fun. The Big Chill Bar & Grill is open 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Sunday, with a late-night menu after 10 p.m. Get a bargain on mouth watering food from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for half-price lunch, from 4-6 p.m. for Early Bird dinner specials, or 4-8 p.m. for sunset drink specials. FUSION Chef Anish Gopinath was born and raised in South India, where he attended culinary school. After working as a pastry chef, he furthered his culinary education in France, learning French, Italian, German, Australian, Jamaican and American cuisine. He is able to combine the best of all these worlds, using precise pastry-cooking techniques to meld together amazing flavors in new and exciting ways. While Anish specializes in fusion cuisine — which means the fusing together of different flavors and ingredients from different regions and cultures — his business partner, Franklin Jayakumar, specializes in tandoori cooking. Anish and Franklin knew each other in India before either embarked on a culinary career. The restaurant just acquired a new tandoor, a cylindrical clay oven used for tandoori cooking, and Franklin puts it to good use. Fusion’s menus are eclectic and include such items as

Any description here cannot do these extensive menus justice; you just need to check Fusion out for yourself. If you want to try many items for one price, try Fusion’s buffet, Friday-Saturday, 5-10 p.m. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., and dinner is 5-10 p.m. There’s also a Happy Hour daily from 5-7 p.m. Fusion offers an extensive wine list and a variety of beers, including three Indian labels: Taj Mahal, Kingfi sher and Flying Horse. They also import Thums Up soda from India. The decor at Fusion is simple and attractive, with new wood fl oors, handmade wall hangings, an appealing color scheme and a sleek bar. The restaurant hosts events, such as a recent art show and silent auction, and can accommodate private dining for up to 25 guests (with reservations), meetings, parties and more. Thanks to Anish’s pastry background, Fusion can also provide wedding cakes. This restaurant is a hidden gem, well worth the treasure hunt. GILLAN’S FRESH SEAFOOD & OYSTER BAR Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar For a one-of-a-kind “Family Friendly, Price Friendly!” seafood extravaganza that is about as local as you can get, head to Gillan’s Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar in South Island Square, in the old LongHorn Steakhouse location. HUGO’S Hugo’s has moved! Hugo Arrieta, who is something of an island institution, spent a remarkable 28 years orchestrating activities in the dining room of highly regarded Fitzgerald’s Restaurant on South Forest Beach Drive. Now Hugo, joined by his son Brandon, has moved his popular restaurant to a beautiful new location. The new premises are almost twice as large as before, with a two-level dining room, intimate booths, a private room for special functions, a separate bar and a wine room. NEW YORK CITY PIZZA Here’s more good news for folks who enjoy pizzas, subs, calzones, and entrees such as pasta, chicken and veal parmigiana! Popular New York City Pizza has opened a second island location not far from the bridge to the mainland. New York City Pizza serves an excellent selection of authentic New York–style pies, plus thin crust, thick crust, Sicilian and just about any style of pizza patrons might desire. The extensive menu also includes salads large enough for two, panini (classic Italian sandwiches, much like subs), calzones, veal, chicken, pasta and more. Pizza aficionados take note! In summary, even though its name is New York City Pizza, both the new and existing New York City Pizza restaurants offer both excellent pizza and many traditional offerings of a classic Italian restaurant. OKKO The owners of Asian Bistro in Orleans Plaza have created a modern, contemporary haven for Japanese and Thai food aficionados at the new OKKO restaurant on Mathews Drive. OKKO’s upscale atmosphere echoes the beauty of Japanese simplicity and balance, with sleek glass, beautiful woods, and a mix of subtle warm and cool hues throughout. Speaking of warm: Fire is a masterful, if fleeting, centerpiece at the six hibachi tables. World Game Bar & Grill Opens Chef Hugo Lee of Trattoria Divina has opened a new restaurant next door in Park Plaza. World Game Bar & Grill is meant to be a more laid-back atmosphere, with video games, pool, big-screen TVs, and free pizza slices during Happy Hour, 5-7 p.m. The menu includes appetizers like sliders and lobster corn dogs; brunch items; a variety of salads; always-popular burgers and sandwiches; several types of pizza; and entrees like wasabi peanut crusted salmon filet, blackened chicken breast, fish tacos, and steaks.
