Welcome to Hilton Head
S
ummer is a beautiful time to explore and enjoy Hilton Head Island. As the temperature rises, our quintessential beach community blossoms with endless recreation and leisure activities. Whether you are here for a family beach vacation, a business trip, a weekend getaway or just a day of fun in the sun, you will soon understand what makes Hilton Head Island so special. Broad beaches, sub-tropical weather, first-rate restaurants, world-class golf and other amazing attractions make it a wonderful place to visit. It’s also a wonderful place to live (many of us were tourists that decided to stay). Like all good vacation destinations, there is much to find. Many also come for what you can’t find. Hilton Head isn’t overloaded with sweaty crowds, buzzing neon signs or chinsey tourist traps. People come to Hilton Head Island to relax. Along with 12 miles of unspoiled public beaches, the island is home to a vast array of wildlife, including alligators, deer, loggerhead sea turtles, dolphins and hundreds of species of birds. Explore Broad Creek on a kayak. Meander through Sea Pines Forest Preserve on horseback. Rent a bike and take advantage of more than 60 miles of multi-use trails. If outdoor activity isn’t your cup of tea, you’ll still find plenty of things to see and do. Our island offers an unusual number of cultural opportunities for a community its size, including Broadway-quality plays, a 120-member full chorus, a highly rated symphony orchestra, the largest annual outdoor wine tasting event on the East Coast and numerous other annual community festivals. The PGA Tour also stops by each April for the RBC Heritage on famed Harbour Town Golf Links. You will quickly learn life moves much slower here in the Lowcountry. You will also quickly find many of our locations and attractions are difficult to find. That’s where we come in. We have improved the guide to make it more user-friendly, making it the onestop publication for where to go, what to do and other insider tips. We are glad you are here and hope you enjoy your vacation. If you’re like us, you may decide to stick around. Anuska Frey, Publisher and CEO anuska@triopublications.com 843-681-3800

About Our Island
About Our Island There are many reasons why Hilton Head Island is a popular tourist destination. The unmatched beauty, the 12 miles of pristine beaches, the endless recreational opportunities and the mild winters all play a part.
•
There is also the golf. Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area offer a whopping 52 courses, 32 of which are open to public play. If you don’t play golf, we’ve still got plenty to do.
•
In fact, the only possible limit to your vacation fun is your imagination. Here are a few facts and figures about our island: •
The island gets its name from Captain William Hilton.
•
• • •
We are located 20 miles north of Savannah, Ga., and 95 miles south of Charleston, S.C. The year-round population of the island is 38,000 but during peak season, that number can swell to 275,000 The Town of Hilton Head Island was incorporated as a municipality in 1983 as is well known for its “eco-friendly” development. All 12 miles of beach is open to the public. Average highs and lows over the summer are: June (87, 69), July (90, 72), August (88,71) and September (85-68). The Hilton Head Island area is home to a vast array of wildlife, including alligators, deer, loggerhead sea turtles, manatee, hundreds of species of birds and dolphins.

Life’s a Beach
Things you may not know about our beaches Let’s start out with the basics: All of Hilton Head Island’s beach is public, but access to it is often private. The Town of Hilton Head Island designates nine beach access points (see map page 19) around the island, with some metered parking and some free parking. Dree-sen, Dry-sen, Drize-den ... there doesn’t seem to be a consensus on how to pronounce Driessen Beach Park. But locals say it’s DREE-sun, named after the athletic Driessen family. Islander Dan Driessen was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds right out of high school and enjoyed a 15-year MLB career, becoming the National League’s first-ever designated hitter in the World Series in 1976. Are you more of an explorer than a sunbather? Then Mitchelville Beach on the north end is the place for you. A more primitive setting, the receding tides leave more pluff mud than sand, but the beach is teeming with horseshoe crabs, fish and other wildlife. Wear your water shoes and bring your dog — they love it out there, too. There’s a standing “no alcohol on the beach” rule now, but this wasn’t always the case. Besides a few long-
www.forkandfun.com
gone outdoor bars that catered to the “no shirts, no shoes” crowd, beach regulars would routinely bury beer kegs in the sand packed with ice — the only way to keep the beer cold all day, they say. Gives a whole new meaning to “buried treasure,” doesn’t it? Along with doing the “stingray shuffle” on your way in and out of the ocean, be mindful of what’s going on around you. If someone is surf casting nearby, go down the beach a little ways before heading into the water. Whatever bait they’re casting with is probably attracting things you don’t want to bump into. The names of the streets leading to the beach are alphabetical on both sides of Coligny Circle. South of the circle are indigenous plant names (Alder, Bayberry, Cassina, etc.) and north of the circle are bird names (Avocet, Bittern, Curlew, Dove, etc.). There used to be a couple of unattended kiosks on the beach, one near the Beach House and the other at what is now Marriott’s Grande Ocean Resort, where you could insert a quarter and get a squirt of suntan lotion. We’re guessing it wasn’t the SPF 30 we slather on today, but still more convenient than lugging around an entire bottle. If you’re a local, chances are you think of Coligny Beach as the beach for tourists. But take another look: It’s one of the only beaches with free parking, and it’s got the best showering and changing facilities. Plus there are great tidal pools at low tide, making it a great place for little beachgoers to spot sand dollars and splash around. (Still, locals avoid this one on holidays.) There are tight restrictions on dogs at the beach now, but years ago another animal roamed free along the shoreline. Before the island became a tourist destination and rules were enacted to keep things orderly, island kids all had Marsh Tacky horses, which they’d freely ride up and down the beaches. They rode bareback in the summer and legend has it they’d have battles out in the waves, trying to knock one another off their trusty steeds.

Scenic Tour
Your Scenic Driving Tour Hilton Head Island, one of America’s premiere resort and residential communities, has so much to offer that it is almost impossible to experience it all during one visit. With countless scenic attractions, 12 miles of ocean beach, more than 200 restaurants, nearly 100 miles of fairway, hundreds of tennis courts, dozens of interesting neighborhoods, unspoiled nature preserves and sophisticated shops, a person could spend months getting to know even the best parts of Hilton Head. The purpose of this scenic driving tour is to help you to sample many of the good things. It includes harbors, salt marshes, fairways, neighborhoods, selected hotels and much more. One of the best parts of the tour is that it is free, except for fuel for your car and the $5 per vehicle daily entry fee at Sea Pines Plantation. We have provided you with a suggested tour itinerary (beginning below) and a full-page tour map on page 15. Where to Begin Your Tour Your suggested tour begins at Stop 1, Harbour Town. Harbour Town is located within Sea Pines Plantation at the South end of the island. You also may wish to visit only selected stops on the suggested tour. If time is limited, read through the descriptions of the various stops, and decide which would be of greatest interest to you. Stop 1: Harbour Town, and Stop 2: Harbour Town Pier Harbour Town may be the best known of Hilton Head’s scenic attractions. The marina is a popular stop for yachts traveling up and down the Intracoastal Waterway, which extends from New York to Key West. Harbour Town has numerous shops and several restaurants. Harbour Town, like Shelter Cove Harbour (farther along your tour), is considered by many to reflect much of the essence of Hilton Head. There is a pier at the base of the lighthouse that will take you well out into Calibogue Sound. It is almost like being in a boat without leaving shore..
16
If you want a truly outstanding scenic tour from the water, include a cruise from Harbour Town, South Beach Village or Shelter Cove Harbour (the latter two locations are farther along your route) as part of your itinerary! Before you leave, be sure to stroll all the way around the harbor until you are opposite the lighthouse. Notice the elegant yachts as you walk. When you reach the end of the path, you will be standing just past the 18th green of the famous Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the prestigious RBC Heritage golf tournament. Stop 3: Baynard Ruins Park Baynard Ruins Park is on your right just after you pass Baynard Cove Road and Marsh Drive. If you wish, park your car at the entrance, and explore the ruins of the pre-Civil War home of William E. Baynard. The ruins consist of foundations left when a Confederate raiding party razed the structure following the occupation of Hilton Head by Union forces during the Civil War. The Baynard home had been the longtime headquarters of a 2,450-acre cotton plantation. Stop 4: South Beach Village Located on South Sea Pines Drive, South Beach Village is a New England–style shopping center. When you reach South Beach Village, you may wish to stop for a stroll. You will find boats, charming shops, fun restaurants and an overall atmosphere that is both pleasant and rather quaint.
www.forkandfun.com
Stop 9: Port Royal Plantation Port Royal is the only private oceanside planned residential community on Hilton Head Island. It boasts two major Civil War sites (Fort Walker and Fort Sherman) and is home to the Spanish American War steam gun. All three sites are well-marked inside the plantation.
Stop 5: North/South Forest Beach Coligny Plaza Located at One North Forest Beach Drive at Coligny Circle, Coligny Plaza is one of the island’s most popular locations to dine, shop and unwind. It is considered Hilton Head’s “downtown.” Many popular restaurants and shops are located here, along with a one-screen movie theater that mostly shows films from independent producers, aimed at an upscale audience. Being across the street from the island’s most popular beach, many visitors stroll Coligny’s sidewalks in swimsuits. There are more than 60 shops and restaurants and entertainment is provided nightly. The nearby North and South Forest Beach areas are home to many rental condos and vacation houses. Stop 6: Palmetto Bay Marina A full-service marina offering dockage, laundry facilities, charters, water activities, shopping, restaurants and boat repair. Established in 1959, Palmetto Bay Marina is the oldest marina on the island. It is located at 86 Helmsman Way. Stop 7: Shelter Cove Harbour Shelter Cove Harbour, a Mediterranean-style harborside village, is another area where you should park your car and take a pleasant stroll. Shelter Cove boasts pleasant shops and restaurants, numerous boats and yachts, and lovely water vistas. Shelter Cove is Hilton Head’s largest harbor. If you like Shelter Cove (and you will!), consider returning in the evening for Harbourfest. Entertainment nightly with Firweworks on Tuesdays at dark during the summer season. Stop 8: Palmetto Dunes Located at the heart of Hilton Head Island, Palmetto Dunes Resort features three quality golf courses, an award-winning tennis center and an 11-mile lagoon that invites guests in kayaks and canoes to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. Many popular restaurants can also be found here.
www.forkandfun.com
Stop 10: Mitchelville and Fish Haul Creek Park he first self-govered freedmen’s town in America was Mitchelville, and its historical significance is remembered with an informational kiosk at Mitchelville Freedom Park. The kiosk is located inside of Fish Haul Creek Park, near the end of Beach City Road by the airport. There is an observation deck, a picnic pavilion restrooms and walking trails. Stop 11: Fort Mitchel and Hilton Head Plantation Fort Mitchel, deep in Hilton Head Plantation, is the last stop on the scenic tour. Please note that the security staff will not admit you to visit Fort Mitchel after dark or if you arrive at dusk. The area is very dark and not suitable for visiting late in the day. Fort Mitchel, built in 1863, served as a base for the Union Blockade of Confederate supplies to Savannah and Charleston. It is a classic example of a seacoast earthworks gun battery of the Civil War era. The remains of the earthworks plus two Civil War cannons are at the Fort Mitchel site. Pathways wind among the ruins, with signs along the way to explain the significance of each section. There are two special benefits to visiting Fort Mitchel. First, visitors see large parts of Hilton Head Plantation, one of our island’s non-resort-oriented plantations. Second, Fort Mitchel has a lovely view of Skull Creek and the marshlands beyond. Stop 12: Island Winery Stop by the charming tasting room, located at 12A Cardinal Road, near the airport. Wine flights and cheese are offered from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Happy hour starts at 4 p.m. during the week. Island Winery specializes in fine red and white wines and is famous for its Lowcountry specialty wines. Barrel tastings are also available. End of Your Tour We hope that you enjoy this scenic tour and that it helps you know Hilton Head much better than you did before you began. If you see some areas you especially like, why not return to them for a longer visit?

History
Hilton Head’s Fascinating Past Contrary to what many might think, there were people on Hilton Head long before tourists started arriving in substantial numbers, and even before the island was a cotton plantation community. Human habitation of the island probably dates back at least 4,500 years. Wandering American Indians — the first tourists — visited long before some decided to take up permanent residence. When Europeans learned of our island early in the 16th century, local American Indians already were engaged in agriculture, hunting, fishing and shellfishing. Signs of our American Indian predecessors are evident even today. Shell rings and mounds are the most prevalent remains. Although shell mounds are usually indiscriminate piles of mixed oyster shells and artifacts, shell rings are rather formidable structures requiring a great deal of time and labor to construct. These rings can range in diameter from 130 to 150 feet, with wall thicknesses of 25 to 70 feet. They are believed to have served a ceremonial function. Europeans Settle On Hilton Head The first European explorer on the island is considered by many to have been a Spaniard, Pedro de Quexos, who found the island sometime in the early 16th century. The English began establishing settlements on Hilton Head in the mid-17th century. Capt. William Hilton, for whom the island was named, was among England’s first explorers in the area and kept careful maps and descriptions of his adventures. By the 1790s, cotton was king on Hilton Head. Before the Civil War, there were about 24 plantations, on which cotton was the main crop. Indigo, sugar cane and rice also were grown. Effects of the Civil War The Civil War brought an end to Hilton Head’s plantation economy. Approximately seven months after the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter near Charleston, more than 12,000 Union soldiers landed on Hilton Head. The invasion of Hilton Head was one of the largest naval engagements ever fought in American waters. With the arrival of Union forces, plantation-owning families vacated their plantations.
18
Hilton Head served as headquarters for the Union’s Department of the South and for the blockade of ships seeking to transport supplies to the Confederate forces. The success of that blockade is credited with being one of the principal reasons for the military defeat of the Confederacy. The area surrounding Fort Walker, what is now Port Royal Plantation, became a thriving port. Its main street, “Robbers’ Row,” boasted three hotels with reputations for quality that reportedly rivaled that of similar establishments in Newport, R.I. The strategic role of the island required the establishment of many military installations, including four earthen forts, one battery, two camps and a steam cannon (never fired) in defense of Port Royal Harbor. The federal government retained ownership of its holding on Hilton Head, and reactivated them for both the Spanish American War and World War I. Many remnants of these installations exist today. Fort Mitchel on Hilton Head Plantation is a good example of a Civil War earthen fort. Many of its earthworks remain substantially intact, and are posted with appropriate signs to help visitors understand what they are seeing. Following the end of the Civil War, a substantial portion of the island’s land was distributed to freed blacks and to “loyal white Northerners” at bargain prices. However, the
www.forkandfun.com
post-war economy of Hilton Head never came close to equaling that of the early 19th century until very recently. The 20th Century Hilton Head remained rural through the first half of the 20th century, with many parcels of land owned and used by Northerners as hunting preserves. The last cultivation of cotton surrendered to the boll weevil, and the island’s economy became based primarily on hunting and fishing. By 1949, approximately 19,000 of Hilton Head’s 25,000 acres had been consolidated into a single large hunting plantation. In 1950, Fred C. Hack, J.B. Fraser and C.C. Stebbins founded the Hilton Head Co. and acquired the land for its timber potential and for possible future development of summer beach colonies. Throughout the subsequent logging process, care was taken to preserve the island’s natural beauty to facilitate eventual development of a residential community. In 1953, the island’s first regular ferry service from the mainland was established, and in 1956, the first bridge to the mainland was completed. The completion of Hilton Head’s first bridge was truly a milestone in our history. Easy access by automobile made its present role as a resort and retirement community feasible. Hilton Head reportedly was far more isolated in the early 1950s than it had been between 1836 and 1940. During that earlier period, it had been a regular stopping place for the coastal steamers that operated along the Southeastern coast. Steamer service declined following World War I, when rice and cotton production in the area was largely discontinued. Trucks using newly paved north-south highways became a more efficient means of other coastal commerce, leading the last of the coastal steamers to go out of business by 1946. A Premiere Resort and Retirement Community The year 1956 also was important in the history of Hilton Head because it was the year the Fraser family withdrew from the Hilton Head Co. and founded the Sea Pines Co., which subsequently acquired what is now Hilton Head Plantation. Under the direction of Charles Fraser, the Sea Pines Co.

immediately began development of Sea Pines Plantation, which has become a prototype of how carefully planned development of major tracts of land can be accomplished without destroying much of the attractiveness of the land and of nature. The “Sea Pines approach” was excellent land-use planning, setting aside substantial tracts of land for amenities and open-space areas, and protecting plans, the environment and property owners by extensive deed restrictions on all property. Sea Pines Plantation’s final master plan, completed in 1974, included four golf courses, 75 tennis courts, and a covenant-enforced ceiling of 5,890 residential dwelling units and 200 hotel rooms on 4,500 acres. Hilton Head’s other plantations are similar in concept. All have master plans, include many amenities and substantial open space, and are protected by strongly written covenants. Hilton Head Today and Tomorrow Today, Hilton Head is one of the most attractive places anywhere to visit or live. It boasts miles of beaches, dozens of golf courses, hundreds of tennis courts, more than 200 restaurants, hundreds of shops, an excellent community orchestra and live theater, and much more. As a result, Hilton Head clearly is different from the place it used to be just three decades ago. It no longer is a sleepy backwater resort community familiar to only a privileged few. Instead, it is a vibrant resort and retirement community with a remarkable range of amenities for everyone to enjoy and a good mix of people from all over the United States and around the world.

Family Fun
Things to do with your kids and teens HIT THE MUSEUM Your first stop on the day of family fun has to be the Coastal Discovery Museum. You can go for one of the countless bird watching programs, educational meet and greets with Lowcountry critters, or outdoor excursions they offer, or you can just go. Somewhere between the butterfly enclosures, the boardwalks meandering through tranquil marshes, the apiary and the marsh tacky barn, something amazing will happen to your kids. Suddenly those Nintendo DS games and Facebook status updates that were so imperative this morning will be forgotten. DOLPHIN WATCHING Many dolphin tours are available. If you’re like us, though, you’re looking to maybe spot a few bottlenoses on the cheap. So here are you best spots. In Bluffton, sandbar enthusiasts aren’t the only ones taking advantage of the May River’s gentle flow. We can personally attest to dolphin sightings during family trips to Oyster Factory Park and Alljoy Beach. On the island, you’d think being right on an ocean would make for some prime dolphin watching, but spotting one on the beach is surprisingly rare compared to spotting one on the island’s interior. You can head down to the Pinckney Island boat landing and spot a few fins slipping above the surface at Skull Creek. There are also a few friendly dolphins hanging out at the marinas along Broad Creek. As a reminder, feeding or harassing dolphins is illegal. Imitating dolphin noises for your kids, however, is hilarious. GET IN SOME MINI GOLF Over at Legendary Golf, with two locations, you can play the most realistic form of miniature golf. Legendary Golf features three renowned championship 18 hole miniature golf courses in beautiful and natural settings with large contoured greens, sand traps and water hazards. Adventure Cove offers excitement for all ages with 36 challenging holes of adventure golf on two Caribbean style courses. Enjoy the sights and sounds of paradise as you play through caverns and around lush garden lagoons.

Go inside and test your skills at the island’s largest arcade. Collect tickets to win great prizes at our redemption center. FOUL-WEATHER FAVORITES Taking the family out to see wildlife and explore the Lowcountry is all well and good, assuming the weather holds out. But what of those days were the heavens just open up and unleash buckets and buckets and rain (we call those days August)? What do you do then? Bowl a few games. Main Street Lanes on the north end and Station 300 in Bluffton gives families a chance to get some bonding time over a few frames and games. On the island, younger kids will dig a day at the Sandbox (see what we did there?). For $7 you get to open the throttle on your kid’s imagination, with pirate ships, airplane cockpits, building sets, crafts, and a slew of more fun exhibits. If you have older kids, Adventure Cove gives you a great chance to finally prove who in the family has the most game. Another place that is great for all ages is The Art Cafe, 14 Greenwood Dr. Gallery of Shops.

Daufuskie
Visit Daufuskie Island Daufuskie Island is only about a mile from Hilton Head as the proverbial crow flies, but it is far, far away from Hilton Head in many important ways. Parts of it are like turning the clock back a hundred or more years in time. The remaining, more developed areas are very low-key. The reason Daufuskie is so different from the nearby mainland and other Sea Islands (like Hilton Head) is that it is reachable only by boat. Daufuskie is only about 30 minutes from Hilton Head by boat. Most sandy dirt roads reveal an island that is rich in history and nature, with one of the most beautiful beaches on the East Coast. Some History American Indians were present on Daufuskie 10,000 years ago. Many artifacts have been found that date back thousands of years. American Indians remained on Daufuskie until the 1800s. The Spanish arrived on the island in the 1500s, when Daufuskie was considered part of Florida. Plantations were started in the late 1600s and early 1700s, after the English gained ownership of South Carolina. For the most part, Daufuskie land grants were given out to wealthy English families. The early plantations planted indigo. Around 1800, cotton became king. When the Civil War broke out there were seven working plantations on Daufuskie Island. Many of the plantations on the island were so ornate that they were written about in European travel magazines. Union forces took over Daufuskie during the first year of the Civil War and remained until 1865. At the end of the war the Union forces left, and Daufuskie was inhabited primarily by the freed slaves. These freed slaves, because of the isolation of the island, kept a culture alive that would have disappeared long ago. That “Gullah” culture still exists on Daufuskie Island to this day. The early 1900s saw Daufuskie Island at the height of its prosperity. The local economy flourished with the sale of sea-island cotton, indigo, lumber, farm goods and oysters. However, by 1920 the boll weevil had decimated the island’s cotton crops. Many residents were forced to leave during the great depression of
26
the 1930s, and more left after Savannah River water polluted and ruined many of the area’s best oyster beds. By the early 1980s, there reportedly were fewer than 100 permanent residents. The 1972 Pat Conroy book, The Water is Wide, was set on Daufuskie, fictionalized as “Yamacraw Island.” The book recounts Conroy’s experiences teaching on the island in the 1960s. Daufuskie Island Today Today, Daufuskie Island is largely residential. It has a full-time population of around 300 and is home to two resorts. There are very few motor vehicles. Many residents and visitors use golf carts as their primary mode of transportation. Several boats provide public transportation to Daufuskie Island. An extensive schedule is maintained by the Capt. Eulice of Calibogue Cruises. Please refer to the advertisement on the next page. Additional Daufuskie Island and other Calibogue Cruises programs and activities also are described on the page. The Vagabond, appearing in an ad in the “Boating, Cruising & Fishing” section, also provides transportation to Daufuskie Island. When you arrive on Daufuskie, you may choose to take a fully narrated, guided tour of the island or to explore on your own on a rented, gas-powered golf cart. There’s an old winery, an ancient church, an old schoolhouse and other sites made famous by Conrack—the movie adaptation of The Water Is Wide—plus beautiful beaches and more.
www.forkandfun.com
If the ride over to Daufuskie weren’t enjoyable enough, passing beautiful homes, seeing smaller islands, watching the dolphins swimming along side the boat; then the experiences on Daufuskie Island will definitely make you glad you chose to make a trip to one of the most scenic and historical islands on the East Coast. There are buses to take you in comfort around the island, and golf carts to allow you to experience the island on your own. Maybe just enjoying the quiet breezes as you lounge outside at one of the picnic tables overlooking Calibogue Sound will be one of your lasting memories. Daufuskie Island is a beautiful location for a wedding, reunion, graduation party, family gathering or any fun occasion. Special discounted rates are available for groups. Consider spending the night in one of the comfortable air-conditioned Daufuskie Crab Cottages. “Rustic elegance” away from it all and an experience you’ll love sharing with your friends when you get back home.

Making Waves
Making Waves Many locals and visitors agree that the single greatest attraction here is the water. Some are content just to look at it – they relish the simple pleasure of knowing that it’s there. Others, however, enjoy getting out on the rivers, sea, sounds and tidal creeks that make this place what it is. If you belong to this second category, there are plenty of boating adventures to be had. GET YOUR PADDLE ON: Kayaking is an excellent way to explore the many small creeks that snake through the marsh, skirting uninhabited islands and leading you to hard-to-reach places harbouring the shyest of wildlife. There are a number of good kayak outfitters and guide services, while experienced kayakers can simply take their boat to one of the many public landings and shove off into the blue. We recommend launching at Shelter Cove Marina, located roughly in the middle of Broad Creek. Go against the tide on your way out and use the tide on your way back. Your arms will thank you later. FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES: If you’re trying to find the best way to kick back and relax on the island, why not do it 500 feet in the air? One of the most popular ways to get elevated around here is parasailing, allowing you the thrill of being up high, and the relaxation of sitting back, feeling the breeze, and taking in the view. The parasailing experience is much more than just the time in the air. The boat ride itself can be an adventure. Spot egrets and dolphins as you drift past million-dollar homes and yachts. Once you reach the open water, strap in and prepare for the ride of a lifetime.

CRUISE IN COMFORT: An excellent way to get out on the water, for those who don’t have their own boat, is to take a cruise. There are types of cruises for every taste: dolphin cruises, dinner cruises, booze cruises, singles cruises, benefit cruises, boat tours and multi-day vacations along the Intracoastal Waterway. Drift past Buck Island’s Statue of Liberty, take the kids on a pirate adventure or book a trip to the historic Savannah riverfront. Most cruises are moderately priced. For a more inexpensive option, make friends with a local boater. BE YOUR OWN CAPTAIN: Choose your own adventure by renting a boat or other vessel by the hour or day. Find the May River sandbar (a.k.a. Redneck Riviera), watch Tuesday night fireworks by Shelter Cove or just putz around the island’s many tidal creeks and rivers. Rent wave runners, small sailboats or larger power boats. The rental company will provide you with a nautical chart and explain how it works. Be sure to keep an eye on the tides, which rise and fall almost eight feet. Being stuck in the mud on a warm, humid day isn’t much fun. SKIM THE SURFACE: Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a

manner similar to surfing. Another aspect of skimboarding is flatland, which involves performing tricks derived from skateboarding such as ollies and shove-its on the wash of waves without catching shore breaks. GO FOR A SAIL Enjoy the area’s unique natural beauty on a sailing adventure. Narrated, interactive sailing is offered on the Pau Hana, the island’s biggest catamaran sailboat. rider hits a certain speed, at which point they simply let go of the rope, carried forward by the wake of the boat and a total disregard for how momentum is supposed to work. Other popular wakesports are kneeboarding, wakeboarding, tubing and wakeskating.
FLY A KITE…AND YOURSELF: Speed is just one of the thrills that attract people to kiteboarding, an extreme water sport that is a hybrid of kiting, surfing and wakeboarding. Participants seem to just fly across the water while occasionally jolting out of the water for a jump or an impressive flip. The sport is not only fun to watch, but fun to do, and is becoming more and more popular on Hilton Head. With calm waves, favorable winds, no rocks and big sandy beaches, there is no better place to learn the sport. WAKE ME UP: Surfing is the ancient art of climbing aboard a longboard and using the natural rhythm of waves and tides to propel yourself forward. Wakeboarding is basically like that, only the pure horsepower of a powerboat stands in for Mother Nature. Wakesurfing combines the best of both worlds. The main difference comes when the

Fishing
Drop a Line Well known for its calm sea conditions, Hilton Head Island is a great place for the experienced or novice fisherman to try their luck at catching the big one. Many local seafood restaurants will even clean and cook it for you (southern hospitality in action). Don’t let an unforgettable fishing trip be the one thing that got away this vacation. LAGOON FISHING: Most of the lagoons on Hilton Head are brackish, meaning they are both fresh and salt water. Lagoons offer a unique fishing experience because of the variety of species you can hook. Don’t let the calm waters fool you; fish can grow to enormous sizes (red drum taken here can weigh more than 50 pounds). Other fish caught in the lagoons include tarpon, striped bass, black drum and the occasional blue fish. Live bait such as shrimp and finger mullet are your best bets, but they are usually hard to come by unless you catch your own or are fishing off of a private charter boat. Spinning and top water lures fished with a lightweight spin rod are another popular option. If you have a few hours to spend on the water, a charter boat will supply you with all the equipment, bait, and know-how needed to land a monster.
generally accommodate large numbers of passengers, but private charters are also available (at a higher cost). Half and full day trips are typical. These trips generally target fish that are specific to the season, and can include marlin, tuna and cobia. Most offer specialized shark fishing trips all year. Your vessel may travel many miles out to sea, so be sure to have your Dramamine on hand if you are prone to sea-sickness. LICENSES AND REGULATIONS: South Carolina law requires that all anglers over the
The Island’s Largest Tackle Shop
SURF FISHING: There are a lot of junk fish (skates, rays, small sharks) in the Carolina surf, which can be thrilling to catch for the casual fisherman, but frustrating for those in pursuit of game fish. Red drum, kingfish, and flounder are some of the more prized fish that can be caught. Squid strips, minnows and bunker chunks are the most common types of bait used in the surf. They can be purchased at any tackle shop along with 2- to 3-ounce sinkers to combat the rough water. Don’t feel like you have to cast halfway to the horizon to catch fish, some of the biggest can be taken right out of the breaking waves. The best times to surf fish are early mornings and evenings, when the beach crowds have subsided and the fish are most active. OFFSHORE FISHING: If you are feeling particularly adventurous, and willing to spend a majority of the day surrounded by water, offshore fishing can provide some real thrills. Party boats

Ohio youth wins sport crabbing’s biggest prize.
They laughed when I said I was going with the kids to catch some crabs. They are not laughing anymore. What we did was make reservations on the sport crabbing boat Crabber J II which departs out of Shelter Cove Harbour. Once everyone was on board, the Crabby crew untied the lines and we motored out to the calm waters of Broad Creek. Along the way we saw two dolphins playing. We anchored in the shallow water right next to the salt marsh and everyone fished for blue crabs. It was a lot of fun. The crabby crew kept score and a girl from Cincinnati won the world famous Crabber J II T-shirt cause she caught the most crabs. Please call for current prices. Biking
Ride a Bike Hilton Head Island is one of the best places anywhere to go biking. Where else can bikers choose between lightly travelled local roads, many miles of bike paths (reportedly over 40 miles in total!) and 12 miles of hard-packed sand on our broad beaches? Hilton Head is very flat, so bicyclers may either pedal along in a leisurely way, or — if so inclined — get more vigorous exercise by traveling at a higher rate of speed. Because most vacationers choose a relatively leisurely pace, most rental bikes are single-speed “cruiser bikes” with wide seats and tires, and brakes operated using pedals. However, many rental companies offer mountain and other geared bikes, generally at a slightly higher rate than for cruisers. The best places for riding bikes are on our bike paths and on the beach. Sea Pines, Shipyard and Palmetto Dunes all have extensive networks of bike paths, as illustrated by the red lines on the bike routes map in this section. There also are paths along Pope Avenue, North and South Forest Beach Drive and William Hilton Parkway (Highway 278) between Sea Pines Circle, Palmetto Dunes and Hilton Head Plantation. In addition, for three or four hours before and after low tide (low tide occurs approximately every 12 hours) the beach effectively is a 12-mile-long bike route that runs up and down the island and connects the plantations. At high tide, however, the sand not covered by water is often too soft to support bikes. Whether you are staying on a plantation or elsewhere, you will find that there are numerous access points from your part of the island to the beach and vice versa. You also will find, however, that access through plantation security gates normally is restricted to plantation residents and guests. Renting Bicycles Hilton Head boasts numerous bicycle rental firms that rent many different kinds of bikes. Many offer delivery of bikes, often at no additional charge, to wherever you are if you ask. Bikes may be rented by the hour (a few firms), day (many rental firms) or week (all rental firms).
38
Words of Caution Please do not ride your bicycles in the water on the beach. Salt water is very hard on bicycles and will quickly ruin them. If you should get salt water on them, be sure to hose them off as soon as possible. Please pay attention to the small stop signs on our bike paths, and just in general when crossing intersecting roads and driveways. Too many bicycle riders are hit by automobiles when both fail to stop at stop signs or when both are just in too much of a hurry to be aware of their surroundings. Finally, please lock your bikes. Thefts, though rare, occasionally do happen.

Shopping in Style
Classic, eclectic, sophisticated and beachy One of the many amazing things about the Hilton Head area is the wide range of shopping experiences. There are unique locally owned stores, along with chain options. No matter what you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in our local shopping centers. The classics: North end The north end of Hilton Head is no slouch when it comes to shopping. Many of the stores in Main Street Village have customers that keep coming back for their unique offerings. Main Street Village, which is at the entrance to Hilton Head Plantation, has an old-fashioned quaint feel, with many shopping treasures. Across U.S. 278, the Festival Centre attracts shoppers looking for deals. One of the coolest places to get Hilton Head-centric gifts is at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. The Museum Gift Shop has Lowcountry foods and cookbooks, sweet grass baskets, artwork by local artisans, photography and educational games and toys. Proceeds benefit the museum. The eclectic: Mid-island Looking for vacation wear? Beer brewing equipment? Golf accessories? All of those and much more can be found in the mid-island area of Hilton Head. Start at Pineland Station, which has many lovely specialty shops and tropical décor throughout. There’s always something happening at Pineland Station. Your next stop is Shelter Cove Harbour. This center has a beautiful Mediterranean waterfront setting. There are art galleries, outdoor seating to watch the boats come into the harbour and some great little restaurants. At The Plaza at Shelter Cove, which is just down the way from Shelter Cove Harbour, there are several restaurants. There’s also a craft beer store. Finally, head down the road to the Fresh Market Shoppes for more shopping choices.
40
sophisticated and beachy: South end The shopping on the south end of Hilton Head Island is laden with choices. The first stop is The Village at Wexford. From kitchenware to designer duds to unusual gifts, the 33 stores here offer a variety of sophisticated services. Next stop is Sea Pines, where The Shops at Sea Pines and Harbour Town make for a memorable shopping experience. The Shops at Sea Pines Center host many retail stores including Le Spa (see the Splendid Spas section for more information). Then it’s on to Harbour Town, where shoppers enjoy the beautiful setting on Calibogue Sound. If you’re looking for a fun yet sophisticated experience, this is the place to be. There are many clothing boutiques, gifts shops, and just plain rare finds at a variety of stores. The last stop is at Coligny Plaza on Pope Avenue. There are 60 stores that feature everything from clothing to gifts to accessories. Coligny has a very beachy feel and people will shop here wearing flip-flops and beach cover-ups. It’s very casual and relaxed and filled with beachy stores, like Planet Hilton Head, which carries an eclectic range of gifts, and so many more. There are also upper-end stores, like Island Girl and Fresh Produce, which carry all the latest trends.

Splendid Spas
Renew your mind, body and spirit Hilton Head Island has evolved into a premier spa destination. The region features a diverse mix of treatments and wellness services virtually unheard of outside major metropolitan areas. Many perceive a spa as “a place to get fluffed and buffed,” implying that spas are purely meant for superficial grooming benefits. Sure, there are definite beautification benefits, but the reality is that there are a lot of mental and physical benefits that you can reap from a trip to the spa. Here are some of the top reasons you should check out one of the splendid spas of Hilton Head: 1. STRESS MANAGEMENT AND RELAXATION: Every type of treatment or service, including massage and body work, can help you relax and decompress. Further, you don’t need to actually buy a treatment to see the benefits. Just sitting in a jacuzzi, steam shower or sauna , amenities a lot of spas, wellness and fitness centers offer, can help you to relieve stress 2. DETOX: Many types of services promote detoxification, which eliminates toxins and excess fluids that can contribute to loss of energy, constipation, bloating and water retention. 3. IMPROVED CIRCULATION AND BLOOD PRESSURE: Many services, such as heat therapy, hydrotherapy, massage and body treatments, help to improve circulation and reduce blood pressure. 4. ANTI-AGING AND HEALTHY SKIN: Taking care of your body, mind and skin helps to ward off the aging process. Treatments, such as facials and other skin care services, as well as body treatments, target skin problems to keep you looking your best. 5. PAIN MANAGEMENT: Many types of services can help alleviate pain. Further, some treatments are known to help relieve symptoms of arthritis, fibromyalgia and nerve problems.

Stay in Style
Stay in Style on Hilton Head
From intimate boutique hotels to sprawling resorts offering every amenity under the sun, accommodations on Hilton Head Island have enough variety to please a host of travel styles and budgets. And it doesn’t matter if you want a window overlooking the ocean, the golf course or the breathtaking wetlands. Local operators are keeping a view on service to ensure your every comfort. So stay happy. Stay on Hilton Head. Many families choose Hilton Head Island as their vacation destination, year after year. It’s not unusual to meet people that vacationed here as children, and now bring their children to our beaches.
46
For those looking to “Own a piece of Hilton Head“ , shared ownership offers a way to do just that. One of the most attractive benefits of shared ownership is that the “real” cost of your vacation accommodations should never increase, or at least, it will increase relatively little. The expense of your share of taxes and fees, of course, will go up over time. However, the value of included amenities for which you otherwise would pay cash, such as golf, tennis, beach access, etc., very likely will increase at about the same rate. Whether you choose to stay in a hotel, rent a beachfront house or purchase a shared ownership villa; Hilton Head offers the perfect spot for you and your family.

May River
*This map is not to scale.
Bluffton offers much more than just good places to eat. In fact, some of the area’s best attractions can be found on the mainland. Here is a list of our favorite things to do in Bluffton: Explore the May River
Whether it’s kayaking, sailing, shark fishing or just relaxing on the bank, the May River is overflowing with fun things to do. Go on a dolphin excursion or book a shrimp trolling adventure. Access the river via the Alljoy Boat Landing, located at the end of County Road 13.
Tour Rose Hill Mansion

Originally built in the late 1850s, the Rose Hill Mansion is full of period furniture and memorabilia from original owner James Brown Kirk. The cost is $25 and reservations are required.
