Welcome to Faces of the Lowcountry Faces of the Lowcountry is an annual sponsored publication that introduces the “faces” of local business owners, civic leaders and experts. These profiles span the Lowcountry, from our mayors to the owner of a computer company to hair stylists and expert home builders. With the profiles included in these pages, we bring you the stories of Bluffton’s and Hilton Head Island’s leading entrepreneurs. Every business owner is a local leader and the face of their respective industry. Many have chosen to include their entire staff in their portrait photos, and some even included pets. Running a successful business takes courage, hard work and a commitment to making a difference. These leaders go the extra mile to keep the Lowcountry thriving. My husband, Marc, and I first got to know the Lowcountry in 1987 when we vacationed here on our honeymoon, fell in love with the area and bought a second home. We made Hilton Head Island our permanent home in 1991 and raised our two sons, Marco and Fabio, on the island. I love being part of the Lowcountry community and watching it grow and prosper. At Frey Media, we’re proud to bring you faces of those who serve our community through their hard work. As our local business community grows and diversifies, Lowcountry residents are increasingly able to find everything they need right here at home. We are proud to be part of the effort to “Keep it local, y’all.” Special thanks to our sales team, writers, photographers and graphic designers for making this publication a success. If you missed being included this year, don’t worry — Faces of the Lowcountry will be back in 2020. Meanwhile, check out the digital version on our website at facesofthelowcountry.com

MAYOR JOHN McCANN McCann has worked to better the community. With a down-to-earth personality, McCann engages with residents from all Island neighborhoods, making sure he listens to their concerns. He takes pride in representing the Island and its citizens and feels he has hit some home runs in finding meaningful resolutions to road improvements, cultural preservation and other tough issues. He attributes his success thus far as a mayor to support from his family, Town staff, fellow council members and residents, who helped him ascend to a higher office.

John McCann has three likes – baseball (the New York Yankees to be exact), Hilton Head Island and being Mayor of Hilton Head Island – not specifically in that order. They all weigh equally to him. Perhaps, above all, Mayor McCann just wants his home base of 18 years to be the best community around. Accolades, such as being named the #1 Island in the continental United States by Travel & Leisure magazine readers, give credence to McCann’s belief that despite the challenges Hilton Head Island wrestles with, it is still a great community. Ever since he took office as a councilman in 2012,

THE TEAM OF THE ARTS CENTER The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is more than just an arts center. It’s a vibrant hub for Hilton Head Island’s artistic spirit, providing a home where creativity can thrive. It’s also the state’s largest professional theater. The Arts Center’s five shows a year — produced on site from casting to curtain — represent a cross-section of Broadway favorites, while its famed Presenter Series brings some of the
world’s finest musicians, performers and comedians to our small island. But perhaps even more vital is its mission to nurture the arts of the Lowcountry, from year-round educational programs to free communitywide festivals for all ages. Its indispensable role in our region truly makes the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina Hilton Head’s face of the arts.

The Face of Youth Development
Putting young people on the path to great futures: At the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island, we take youth development to the highest level. The club provides local youth with a safe environment when they are not in school — but that’s not all we do. Our team goes above and beyond to make sure kids and teens have the skills and competencies needed to excel in life. Our staff serves as mentors and educators, promoting positive communication and instilling confidence, trust and respect — all while letting kids be kids. Positive youth development is a responsibility shared by families, schools and communities, and we are proud of the role we play in this critically
important process. Our youth professionals are highly qualified and caring individuals who are masters at creating unique, meaningful and fun programs that emphasize education, career development, sports, recreation, health, the arts, technology and leadership. Nowhere else on Hilton Head Island will you find a club with nationally recognized programs, a tech center, professional recording studio, robotics, a makerspace, STEM lab, 3-D printers, a fishing pond, tennis court, soccer field, reading and math support, SAT prep, a teen-run snack shack, more than 100 volunteers and a pottery kiln under one roof. It’s the coolest club in town!

The school recently completed its re-accreditation review with SACS/AdvancEd, which rated Heritage Academy in the top third among 36,000 schools in 71 countries. The Face of Pest Control
The face of pest control has been Hilton Head Exterminators ever since the island community began to grow in 1968. The faces at Hilton Head Exterminators have grown along with the population. Those faces are represented above by Josie Gregory, Patrick Jamieson, and Carlos Abreau. Professionalism and commitment to customer satisfaction are a daily practice for Patrick and Carlos. This provides Josie with great stories to post as Social Media and Marketing Coordinator.
She collects the positive reviews as well. The faces you don’t see are those of the committed team of technicians and office staff that have resulted in Hilton Head Exterminators becoming the most trusted pest control provider in Hilton Head, Bluffton, and across the Lowcountry. When people are faced with pests, the face they most want to see is that of a pest control professional from Hilton Head Exterminators.

HILTON HEAD PREP STUDENTS At Hilton Head Prep, leading the way in education means more than just consistently being ranked among the best private schools in the state. While they have certainly achieved that time and again, the school looks at leadership as not just something to achieve, but something to teach. And it starts with the students. The school’s “Pooh Pals” program represents leadership in its purest form, pairing up one kindergartener or first grader with an upper
school senior who will serve as a mentor. More than just a tutor, these seniors help guide their Pooh Pal’s career at Hilton Head Prep, joining them at pep rallies, dressing alike at Halloween and forging the bonds of community that define the school. From the classroom to the field and after school, these students learn the value of character and leadership, while further uniting a tight-knit community that leads the way in education.

The Face of Healing Through Oxygen
There’s a quote written in bold letters across the wall as you walk into Hyperbaric Therapy of the Lowcountry: “Oxygen is to the brain as rain is to the desert ― it creates an oasis of life.” But the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy are not solely limited to helping the brain. Oxygen under pressure provides healing power to the entire body. Established in 2008, Hyperbaric Therapy of the Lowcountry’s experienced and professionally trained
staff deliver hyperbaric therapy to meet the needs of Lowcountry residents and patients from surrounding states. Harnessing oxygen’s ability to stimulate stem cell formation and facilitate growth of new blood vessels enables hyperbaric therapy to be applied to a wide array of conditions. For those seeking recovery after a stroke to treatment of non-healing wounds and chronic inflammation, Hyperbaric Therapy of the Lowcountry’s caring staff is ready to help.

Kayak tours launched from Simmons Fishcamp were soon joined by a fleet of boats offering Dolphin Discoveries Boat Tours, catch-and-release family fun shark fishing tours and beachcombing excursions to Vanishing Island. Kayak tours for experienced kayakers and families
alike ply the tranquil waters of Broad Creek, encountering dolphins, manatees, otters and native birds, while dolphin boat tours take you and your family members out across the sparkling waters that surround our island home. ANDREW AMBLER The kitchen is the heart of any home — and if you’re looking to give your home a fresh new look, it’s the most important place to start. It can also be the costliest. A full demo and remodel of existing cabinetry can seem to take forever, and it often comes with an enormous bill. But you can get an entirely new look for your kitchen quickly and for about a fifth of the cost of a full remodel. N-Hance offers full site refinishing,
refacing and rejuvenating services that are as eyecatching as they are easy on the pocketbook. From a simple refinish that restores the pristine look of your cabinets to a refacing with modern full overlay or window cabinet doors, N-Hance offers a solution that will fit your budget and leave your kitchen looking fantastic. Change your color, change your finish and even refresh your granite countertops. The results will amaze you.

The Face of Expert Hearing Solutions
As a seasoned professional with 40 years of experience in hearing health care and helping people with their hearing, Randy Rose of Rose Hearing Healthcare Centers knows the importance of understanding and dealing with hearing issues. Randy also wears hearing aids. Leaving hearing unchecked may lead to balance issues, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia as the brain tissue that interprets sound loses plasticity. Randy knows that today’s hearing aids are nothing like your grandparents’ hearing aids. Not only are they smaller and more discreet, they are smarter. At
Rose Hearing Healthcare Centers, we offer models that connect with your smartphone, letting you tailor your hearing to adapt to any environment — a noisy restaurant, a quiet conversation or an evening at home. With a few taps on your phone, you will be hearing with clarity, confident that you will not miss a word. Beyond the high-tech options, the true mission of Rose Hearing Healthcare Centers is simple: Helping people live their best hearing lives. We have options to fit any pocketbook and offer all makes and models of hearing aids.

The Face of Bluffton
Since 2008, Lisa Sulka has been the mayor and head cheerleader of Bluffton. Fueled by her everpresent coffee cup, her limitless energy has helped guide Bluffton through its explosive growth. Bluffton is now the state’s fifth-largest municipality and one of the fastest-growing towns in the Southeast. Despite the demands on her schedule, one resident describes Mayor Sulka’s leadership style as “wrapping her arms around the entire community.” As a strong advocate for Bluffton’s youth, she
is often writing recommendations to colleges for students or cheering for them in their various sports, activities and career aspirations. Mayor Sulka is now leading the charge for a “hands-free” law to reduce distracting driving in South Carolina. Teaming up with the Lutzie 43 Foundation, which was founded after an Auburn football player lost his life from distracted driving, Sulka has adopted its mission as her own to reduce local vehicle accidents.

CHIEF JOHN THOMPSON, DEPUTY CHIEF PAUL BOULWARE, AND DEPUTY CHIEF RICK CRAMER The Bluffton Township Fire District has been protecting residents of and visitors to the Greater Bluffton area for 40+ years. As Bluffton and the surrounding areas have changed, so too has the District. Where once Bluffton Fire was a two station, all-volunteer operation that protected downtown Bluffton and Pritchardville, the organization now consists of 149 paid staff that protects 246 square miles in Southern Beaufort County. And today’s
responders do much more than just put out fires. Firefighters are called upon for natural or manmade disasters, water emergencies, auto accidents, building collapses/explosions, as well as medical calls with their EMS colleagues to name a few. In addition, firefighters spend a great deal of time doing all they can to prevent emergencies from happening in the first place.

like the “Vineyard Connect” smart technology which is designed to optimize and monitor safety within each private residence. The “Vineyard Gives” program is designed to provide residents’ opportunities to participate in causes they care about within the Lowcountry. In a vertically integrated structure, Vineyard serves as the legacy model of a community built to change as the residents’ needs do, because the only thing more important than adding “years to your life, is adding life to your years.” At Vineyard, the residents get to live life, their way.

The Face of Marketing
Marc Frey’s passion for marketing started as a young boy who found TV commercials featuring cartoons the most compelling thing on TV. Equipped with a degree in business, he moved to Paris to hone his craft and worked at world-renowned advertising agency Publicis. To Frey, marketing means convincing someone to take a specific action — whether it’s donating to the Boys & Girls Club, attending the Hilton Head Symphony, buying an electric bike or purchasing a home in “paradise.” He named the agency side of the company “Your
Local Marketing Team” because he loves helping brands find their voice in today’s world of changing consumer trends. Frey and his team partner with locally-owned businesses to analyze their current and future marketing plans and define a clear path toward success. His enthusiasm for spreading good ideas quickly through visual, digital and traditional channels leads to consumer engagement, and his work stands out in an enviroment where competition for audience attention is fierce.
